Previously we published a dynamical model (E. Brown and G. Ahlers, Phys. Fluids, 20, 075101 (2008)) for the large-scale-circulation (LSC) dynamics of Rayleigh-Benard convection in cylindrical containers. The model consists of a pair of stochastic ordinary differential equations, motivated by the Navier-Stokes equations, one each for the strength delta and the orientation theta_0 of the LSC. Here we extend it to cases where the rotational invariance of the system is broken by one of several physically relevant perturbations. As an example we present experimental measurements of the LSC dynamics for a container tilted relative to gravity. In that case the model predicts that the buoyancy of the thermal boundary layers encourages fluid to travel along the steepest slope, that it locks the LSC in this direction, and that it strengthens the flow, as seen in experiments. The increase in LSC strength is shown to be responsible for the observed suppression of cessations and azimuthal fluctuations. We predict and observe that for large enough tilt angles, the restoring force that aligns the flow with the slope is strong enough to cause oscillations of the LSC around this orientation. This planar oscillation mode is different from coherent torsional oscillations that have been observed previously. The model was applied also to containers with elliptical cross-sections and predicts that the pressure due to the side walls forces the flow into a preferred orientation in the direction of the longest diameter. When the ellipticity is large enough, then oscillations around this orientation are predicted.
Turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection in slender cylindrical cells exhibits rich dynamics of the large-scale circulation (LSC), with several rolls stacked on top of each other. We propose that the elliptical instability is the mechanism which causes the twisting and breaking of the LSC into multiple rolls and that the volume-averaged heat and momentum transport, represented by the Nusselt number and Reynolds number, is generally weaker for larger number $n$ of the LSC rolls. This is supported by direct numerical simulations for $Ra=5\times10^5$, $Pr=0.1$, $H=5D$ and $1\leq~n\leq4$.
A model for the large-scale circulation (LSC) dynamics of turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection is presented. It consists of two stochastic ordinary differential equations motivated by the Navier-Stokes equation, one each for the strength and the azimuthal orientation of the LSC. Stochastic forces represent phenomenologically the action of the turbulent fluctuations on the LSC. Without adjustable parameters, the model yields a meandering LSC with occasional rotations, and with more rare cessations that occur a few times per day -- differing only by about a factor of two from experiment. Also as…
We present measurements of the orientation theta_0(t) of the large-scale circulation (LSC) of turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection in cylindrical cells of aspect ratio 1. theta_0(t) undergoes irregular reorientations. It contains reorientation events by rotation through angles Delta theta with a monotonically decreasing probability distribution p(Delta theta), and by cessations (where the LSC stops temporarily) with a uniform p(Delta theta). Reorientations have Poissonian statistics in time. The amplitude of the LSC and the magnitude of the azimuthal rotation rate have a negative correlation.
A possible explanation for the apparent phase stability of the 11.07-year Schwabe cycle of the solar dynamo was the subject of a series of recent papers. The synchronization of the helicity of an instability with azimuthal wavenumber m=1 by a tidal m=2 perturbation played a key role here. To analyze this type of interaction in a paradigmatic set-up, we study a thermally driven Rayleigh-Bénard Convection (RBC) of a liquid metal under the influence of a tide-like electromagnetic forcing. As shown previously, the time-modulation of this forcing emerges as a peak frequency in the m=2 mode of the r…
We present a broad range of measurements of the angular orientation theta_0(t) of the large-scale circulation (LSC) of turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection as a function of time. We used two cylindrical samples of different overall sizes, but each with its diameter nearly equal to its height. The fluid was water with a Prandtl number of 4.38. The time series theta_0(t) consisted of meanderings similar to a diffusive process, but in addition contained large and irregular spontaneous reorientation events through angles Delta theta. We found that reorientations can occur by two distinct mechanism…
We present a direct numerical simulation on the dynamics of large-scale circulation (LSC) of turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection of air (Pr = 0.7) contained in a cubic cell for Rayleigh number range 2X10^6 < Ra < 10^9 . The strength and orientation of LSC are quantified by the amplitude and phase of the first Fourier mode of the vertical velocity. The plane containing LSC is generally aligned along one of the diagonals of the box accompanied by a four-roll structure in the other. However, an abnormal single-roll state with substructures is noted at the face planes for low Ra. In addition to t…
We present measurements of the large-scale circulation (LSC) of turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection in water-filled cylindrical samples of heights equal to their diameters. The orientation of the LSC had an irregular time dependence, but revealed a net azimuthal rotation with an average period of about 3 days for Rayleigh numbers R > 10^10. On average there was also a tendency for the LSC to be aligned with upflow to the west and downflow to the east, even after physically rotating the apparatus in the laboratory through various angles. Both of these phenomena could be explained as a result o…
Rayleigh-Benard convection is not only a classical problem in fluid dynamics but plays also an important role in many metallurgical and crystal growth applications. The measurement of the flow field and of the dynamics of the emerging large-scale circulation in liquid metals is a challenging task due to the opaqueness and the high temperature of the melts. Contactless inductive flow tomography is a technique to visualize the mean three-dimensional flow structure in liquid metals by measuring the flow induced magnetic field perturbations under the influence of one or several applied magnetic fi…
In this paper, we present results from an experimental study into turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection forced externally by periodically modulated unidirectional rotation rates. We find that the azimuthal rotation velocity $\dotθ$(t) and thermal amplitude $δ$(t) of the large-scale circulation (LSC) are modulated by the forcing, exhibiting a variety of dynamics including increasing phase delays and a resonant peak in the amplitude of $\dotθ$(t). We also focus on the influence of modulated rotation rates on the frequency of occurrence $η$ of stochastic cessation/reorientation events, and on the …
We present a direct numerical simulation to investigate the dynamics and statistics of reorientations of large-scale circulation (LSC) in turbulent rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection (RRBC) for air ($Pr=0.7$) contained in a cylindrical cell with unit aspect ratio. A wide range of rotation rates ($0\leq Ro^{-1}\leq 30$) is considered for two different Rayleigh numbers $Ra=2\times10^6$ and $2\times10^7$. Using the Fourier mode analysis of time series data obtained from the different probes placed in the azimuthal direction of the container at the mid-plane, the orientation and associated dynami…
Experimental measurements of properties of the large-scale circulation (LSC) in turbulent convection of a fluid heated from below in a cylindrical container of aspect ratio one are presented and used to test a model of diffusion in a potential well for the LSC. The model consists of a pair of stochastic ordinary differential equations motivated by the Navier-Stokes equations. The two coupled equations are for the azimuthal orientation theta_0, and for the azimuthal temperature amplitude delta at the horizontal midplane. The dynamics is due to the driving by Gaussian distributed white noise tha…

We report an experimental study of the large-scale circulation (LSC) in a turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection cell with aspect ratio unity. The temperature-extremum-extraction (TEE) method for obtaining the dynamic information of the LSC is presented. With this method, the azimuthal angular positions of the hot ascending and cold descending flows along the sidewall are identified from the measured instantaneous azimuthal temperature profile. The motion of the LSC is then decomposed into two different modes: the azimuthal mode and the translational or off-center mode. Comparing to the previous…
We studied the properties of the large-scale circulation (LSC) in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard (RB) convection by using results from direct numerical simulations in which we placed a large number of numerical probes close to the sidewall. The LSC orientation is determined by either a cosine or a polynomial fit to the azimuthal temperature or azimuthal vertical velocity profile measured with the probes. We study the LSC in Γ=D/L=1/2 and Γ=1 samples, where D is the diameter and L the height. For Pr=6.4 in an aspect ratio Γ=1 sample at $Ra=1\times10^8$ and $5\times10^8$ the obtained LSC orientation …
We present results of the study of a turbulent air flow with a large scale circulation in Rayleigh-Benard rectangular convective cell with a heated bottom wall and a cooled top wall. The mean horizontal velocity of the main roll and the mean vorticity of eddy rings are almost aligned in a large part of the flow. The helicity of the mean flow is quite high, and is the source of turbulent helicity. Since helicity of the mean flow and turbulence is quite large, the flow in Rayleigh-Benard convective cell is well suited to study properties of helical turbulence.
The boundary layer flow in a Rayleigh-Bénard convection cell of rectangular shape has been visualized in this fluid dynamics video. The experiment has been undertaken in air at a Rayleigh number $Ra=1.3\times 10^{10}$ and a Prandtl number $Pr=0.7$. Various sequences captured at selected positions of the heating plate show that the boundary layer is a very transient flow region characterized by coherent structures that permanently evolve. It becomes fully turbulent in the areas where the large-scale circulation impinge or leave the bottom plate.
In Rayleigh-Bénard convection, it has been found that the amount of heat passing through the fluid has a power law dependence on the imposed temperature difference. Modifying this dependence, either enhancing or reducing the heat transfer capability of fluids, is important in many scientific and practical applications. Here, we present a simple means to control the vertical heat transfer in Rayleigh-Bénard convection by injecting heat through one lateral side of the fluid domain and extracting the same amount of heat from the opposite side. This horizontal heat flux regulates the large-scale c…
The Boussinesq equations for Rayleigh-Benard convection are simulated for a cylindrical container with an aspect ratio near 1.5. The transition from an axisymmetric stationary flow to time-dependent flows is studied using nonlinear simulations, linear stability analysis and bifurcation theory. At a Rayleigh number near 25,000, the axisymmetric flow becomes unstable to standing or travelling azimuthal waves. The standing waves are slightly unstable to travelling waves. This scenario is identified as a Hopf bifurcation in a system with O(2) symmetry.
In turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection, a large-scale circulation (LSC) develops in a nearly vertical plane, and is maintained by rising and falling plumes detaching from the unstable thermal boundary layers. Rare but large fluctuations in the LSC amplitude can lead to extinction of the LSC (a cessation event), followed by the re-emergence of another LSC with a different (random) azimuthal orientation. We extend previous models of the LSC dynamics to include momentum and thermal diffusion in the azimuthal plane, and calculate the tails of the probability distributions of both the amplitude an…
For rapidly rotating turbulent Rayleigh--Bénard convection in a slender cylindrical cell, experiments and direct numerical simulations reveal a boundary zonal flow (BZF) that replaces the classical large-scale circulation. The BZF is located near the vertical side wall and enables enhanced heat transport there. Although the azimuthal velocity of the BZF is cyclonic (in the rotating frame), the temperature is an anticyclonic traveling wave of mode one whose signature is a bimodal temperature distribution near the radial boundary. The BZF width is found to scale like $Ra^{1/4}Ek^{2/3}$ where the…
Rotating spiral patterns in Rayleigh-Bénard convection are known to induce azimuthal flows, which raises the question of how different neighboring spirals interact with each other in spiral chaos, and the role of hydrodynamics in this regime. Far from the core, we show that spiral rotations lead to an azimuthal body force that is irrotational and of magnitude proportional to the topological index of the spiral and its angular frequency. The force, although irrotational, cannot be included in the pressure field as it would lead to a nonphysical, multivalued pressure. We calculate the asymptotic…
Temperature and velocity oscillations have been found in a rectangular Rayleigh-Bénard convection cell, in which one large scale convection roll exists. At $Ra=8.9 \times 10^{11}$ and $Pr=4$, temperature oscillation can be observed in most part of the system and the oscillation period remains almost constant, $t_T = 74 \pm 2$ seconds. Velocity oscillation can only be found in its horizontal component, $v_y$ (perpendicular to large scale circulation plane), near the cell sidewall, its oscillation period is also constant, $t_T = 65 \pm 2$ seconds, at these positions. Temperature and velocity osc…
The effects of a vertical static magnetic field on the flow structure and global transport properties of momentum and heat in liquid metal Rayleigh-Bénard convection are investigated. Experiments are conducted in a cylindrical convection cell of unity aspect ratio, filled with the alloy GaInSn at a low Prandtl number of $\mathit{Pr}=0.029$. Changes of the large-scale velocity structure with increasing magnetic field strength are probed systematically using multiple ultrasound Doppler velocimetry sensors and thermocouples for a parameter range that is spanned by Rayleigh numbers of $10^6 \le \m…
A large number of flows with distinctive patterns have been observed in experiments and simulations of Rayleigh-Benard convection in a water-filled cylinder whose radius is twice the height. We have adapted a time-dependent pseudospectral code, first, to carry out Newton's method and branch continuation and, second, to carry out the exponential power method and Arnoldi iteration to calculate leading eigenpairs and determine the stability of the steady states. The resulting bifurcation diagram represents a compromise between the tendency in the bulk towards parallel rolls, and the requirement i…
We investigate the effect of weak rotation on the large-scale circulation (LSC) of turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection, using the theory for cessations in a low-dimensional stochastic model of the flow previously studied. We determine the cessation frequency of the LSC as a function of rotation, and calculate the statistics of the amplitude and azimuthal velocity fluctuations of the LSC as a function of the rotation rate for different Rayleigh numbers. Furthermore, we show that the tails of the reorientation probability distribution function remain unchanged for rotating systems, while the di…
We present high-resolution numerical investigations of heat transport by two-dimensional (2D) turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard (RB) convection over the Rayleigh number range $10^8 \leqslant Ra\leqslant 10^{10}$ and the Prandtl number range $0.7\leqslant Pr \leqslant10$. We find that there exist strong counter-gradient local heat flux with magnitude much larger than the global Nusselt number $Nu$ of the system. Two mechanisms for generating counter-gradient heat transport are identified: one is due to the bulk dynamics and the other is due to the competitions between the corner-flow rolls and the larg…
We present spatial-resolved measurements of the columnar vortex structures in rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection. The scaled radial profiles of the azimuthal velocity $u_ϕ(r)$ and vertical vorticity $ω(r)$ of the vortices are analyzed and compared with the predictions of the asymptotic theory. The results reveal that the asymptotic theory predicts accurately $u_ϕ(r)$ and $ω(r)$ in the geostrophic convection regime, but extension of the theory in the weak rotation regime is needed to interpret the rotation-dependence of the experimental data. Our measurements of the mean velocity, vorticity of…
When the classical Rayleigh-Bénard (RB) system is rotated about its vertical axis roughly three regimes can be identified. In regime I (weak rotation) the large scale circulation (LSC) is the dominant feature of the flow. In regime II (moderate rotation) the LSC is replaced by vertically aligned vortices. Regime III (strong rotation) is characterized by suppression of the vertical velocity fluctuations. Using results from experiments and direct numerical simulations of RB convection for a cell with a diameter-to-height aspect ratio equal to one at $Ra \sim 10^8-10^9$ ($Pr=4-6$) and $0 \lesssim…
We report experimental results for the influence of a tilt angle beta relative to gravity on turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection of cylindrical samples. The measurements were made at Rayleigh numbers R up to 10^11 with two samples of height L equal to the diameter D (aspect ratio Gamma = D/L = 1). The fluid was water with a Prandtl number sigma = 4.38. In contrast to the experiences reported by Chilla et. al. (2004) for a similar sample but with Gamma = 0.5 (D = 0.5 and L = 1.0 m), we found no long relaxation times. For R = 9.4 times 10^10 we measured the Nusselt number N as a function of til…
It is shown that helicity dynamics dominates spectral distribution of the velocity fluctuations in turbulent thermal convection at moderate and large values of the Rayleigh number (distributed chaos and scaling respectively). The large-scale circulation (wind) in the turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection is especially sensitive to the helicity dynamics and its chaotic reversals can be associated with the reversals of the mean helicity sign (the ergodic restoration of the reflectional symmetry in a long run). Results of the laboratory experiments and measurements in the free atmospheric convecti…
The structure of the boundary layers in turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection is studied by means of three-dimensional direct numerical simulations. We consider convection in a cylindrical cell at an aspect ratio one for Rayleigh numbers of Ra=3e+9 and 3e+10 at fixed Prandtl number Pr=0.7. Similar to the experimental results in the same setup and for the same Prandtl number, the structure of the laminar boundary layers of the velocity and temperature fields is found to deviate from the prediction of the Prandtl-Blasius-Pohlhausen theory. Deviations decrease when a dynamical rescaling of the dat…
We present measurements of the orientation $θ_0$ and temperature amplitude $δ$ of the large-scale circulation in a cylindrical sample of turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection (RBC) with aspect ratio $Γ\equiv D/L = 1.00$ ($D$ and $L$ are the diameter and height respectively) and for the Prandtl number $Pr \simeq 0.8$. Results for $θ_0$ revealed a preferred orientation with upflow in the West, consistent with a broken azimuthal invariance due to Earth's Coriolis force [see \cite{BA06b}]. They yielded the azimuthal diffusivity $D_θ$ and a corresponding Reynolds number $Re_θ$ for Rayleigh numbers o…
We investigate the large-scale circulation (LSC) in a turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection flow in a cubic closed convection cell by means of direct numerical simulations at a Rayleigh number $Ra=10^6$. The numerical studies are conducted for single flow trajectories up to $10^5$ convective free-fall times to obtain a sufficient sampling of the four discrete LSC states, which can be summarized to one macrostate, and the two crossover configurations which are taken by the flow in between for short periods. We find that large-scale dynamics depends strongly on the Prandtl number $Pr$ of the flui…
We report on a three-dimensional direct numerical simulation study of flow structure and heat transport in the annular centrifugal Rayleigh-Bénard convection (ACRBC) system, with cold inner and hot outer cylinders corotating axially, for the Rayleigh number range Ra $ \in [{10^6},{10^8}]$ and radius ratio range $η= {R_i}/{R_o} \in [0.3,0.9]$. This study focuses on the dependence of flow properties on the radius ratio $η$. The temperature and velocity fields reveal that different curvatures of the inner and outer cylinders of the ACRBC system lead to asymmetric movements of hot and cold plumes …
Inspired by the hemispherical asymmetry observed in the Earth's inner core, we perform direct numerical simulations to study the effect of the gravity center offset in spherical Rayleigh-Bénard convection. We find that even a minimal shift of the gravity center has a pronounced influence on the flow structures. When the gravity center is shifted towards the South, the co-latitudinal buoyancy component creates an energetic jet on the Northern side of the inner sphere that is directed towards the outer sphere. As a result, a large-scale meridional circulation is formed. However, surprisingly, th…
Turbulent convection systems are known to give rise to prominent large scale circulation. At the same time, the `background' (or `small-scale') turbulence is also highly relevant and e.g. carries the majority of the heat transport in the bulk of the flow. Here, we investigate how the small-scale turbulence is interlinked with the large-scale flow organization of Rayleigh-Bénard convection. Our results are based on a numerical simulation at Rayleigh number $Ra = 10^8$ in a large aspect ratio ($Γ=32$) cell to ensure a distinct scale separation. We extract local magnitudes and wavenumbers of smal…
We investigate the large-scale circulation (LSC) of turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection in a large box of aspect ratio $Γ=32$ for Rayleigh numbers up to $Ra=10^9$ and at a fixed Prandtl number $Pr=1$. A conditional averaging technique allows us to extract statistics of the LSC even though the number and the orientation of the structures vary throughout the domain. We find that various properties of the LSC obtained here, such as the wall-shear stress distribution, the boundary layer thicknesses and the wind Reynolds number, do not differ significantly from results in confined domains ($Γ\appr…
The research is devoted to the stability of convective flow in a nonuniformly rotating layer of an electrically conducting fluid in a spiral magnetic field. The stationary and oscillatory modes of magnetic convection are considered depending on the profile of the angular rotation velocity (Rossby number $\textrm{Ro}$) and on the profile of the external azimuthal magnetic field (magnetic Rossby number $\textrm{Rb}$). The nonlinear dynamic system of Lorentz type equations is obtained by using the Galerkin method. Numerical analysis of these equations has shown the presence of chaotic behavior of…
By utilizing diffusion maps embedding and transition matrix analysis we investigate sparse temperature measurement time-series data from Rayleigh--Bénard convection experiments in a cylindrical container of aspect ratio $Γ=D/L=0.5$ between its diameter ($D$) and height ($L$). We consider the two cases of a cylinder at rest and rotating around its cylinder axis. We find that the relative amplitude of the large-scale circulation (LSC) and its orientation inside the container at different points in time are associated to prominent geometric features in the embedding space spanned by the two domin…
Boiling is an extremely effective way to promote heat transfer from a hot surface to a liquid due to several mechanisms many of which are not understood in quantitative detail. An important component of the overall process is that the buoyancy of the bubbles compounds with that of the liquid to give rise to a much enhanced natural convection. In this paper we focus specifically on this enhancement and present a numerical study of the resulting two-phase Rayleigh-Bénard convection process. We make no attempt to model other aspects of the boiling process such as bubble nucleation and detachment.…
In agreement with a recent experimental discovery by Xia et. al. (2009), we also find a sloshing mode in experiments on the large-scale circulation (LSC) of turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection in a cylindrical sample of aspect ratio one. The sloshing mode has the same frequency as the torsional oscillation discovered by Funfschilling and Ahlers (2004). We show that both modes can be described by an extension of a model developed previously [Brown and Ahlers (2008)] which consists of permitting a lateral displacement of the LSC circulation plane away from the vertical center line of the sample…
Recent studies of rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection at high rotation rates and strong thermal forcing have shown a significant discrepancy in total heat transport between experiments on a confined cylindrical domain on the one hand and simulations on a laterally unconfined periodic domain on the other. This paper addresses this discrepancy using direct numerical simulations on a cylindrical domain. An analysis of the flow field reveals a region of enhanced convection near the wall, the sidewall circulation. The sidewall circulation rotates slowly within the cylinder in anticyclonic direction…
Using direct numerical simulations, we study the statistical properties of reversals in two-dimensional Rayleigh-Bénard convection for infinite Prandtl number. We find that the large-scale circulation reverses irregularly, with the waiting time between two consecutive genuine reversals exhibiting a Poisson distribution on long time scales, while the interval between successive crossings on short time scales shows a power law distribution. We observe that the vertical velocities near the sidewall and at the center show different statistical properties. The velocity near the sidewall shows a lon…
The logarithmic law of mean temperature profile has been observed in different regions in Rayleigh-Bénard turbulence. However, how thermal plumes correlate to the log law of temperature and how the velocity profile changes with pressure gradient are not fully understood. Here, we performed three-dimensional simulations of Rayleigh-Bénard turbulence in a slim-box without the front and back walls with aspect ratio, $L:D:H=1:1/6:1$, in the Rayleigh number $Ra=[1\times10^8, 1\times10^{10}]$ for Prandtl number $Pr=0.7$. The velocity profile is successfully quantified by a two-layer function of a st…
The heat transfer and flow structure in rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection are strongly influenced by the Rayleigh ($Ra$), Prandtl ($Pr$), and Rossby ($Ro$) number. For $Pr\gtrsim 1$ and intermediate rotation rates, the heat transfer is increased compared to the non-rotating case. We find that the regime of increased heat transfer is subdivided into a low and a high $Ra$ number regime. For $Ra\lesssim 5\times10^8$ the heat transfer at a given $Ra$ and $Pr$ is highest at an optimal rotation rate, at which the thickness of the viscous and thermal boundary layer is about equal. From the scaling …
Numerical and experimental data for the heat transfer as function of the Rossby number Ro in turbulent rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection are presented for Prandtl number Pr=4.38 and Rayleigh number $Ra=2.91\times10^8$ up to $Ra=4.52\times10^9$. The aspect ratio Γ= D/L, where L is the height and D the diameter of the cylindrical sample, is varied between Γ=0.5 and Γ=2.0. Without rotation, where the aspect ratio influences the global large scale circulation, we see a small aspect-ratio dependence in the Nusselt number for $Ra=2.91\times10^8$. However, for stronger rotation, i.e. $1/Ro \gg 1/Ro…
We compute fully local boundary layer scales in three-dimensional turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection. These scales are directly connected to the highly intermittent fluctuations of the fluxes of momentum and heat at the isothermal top and bottom walls and are statistically distributed around the corresponding mean thickness scales. The local boundary layer scales also reflect the strong spatial inhomogeneities of both boundary layers due to the large-scale, but complex and intermittent, circulation that builds up in closed convection cells. Similar to turbulent boundary layers, we define inn…
Experiments and simulations of rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection in cylindrical samples have revealed an increase in heat transport with increasing rotation rate. This heat transport enhancement is intimately related to a transition in the turbulent flow structure from a regime dominated by a large-scale circulation (LSC), consisting of a single convection roll, at no or weak rotation to a regime dominated by vertically-aligned vortices at strong rotation. For a sample with an aspect ratio Γ= D/L = 1 (D is the sample diameter and L its height) the transition between the two regimes is indica…
Coherent circulation rolls and their relevance for the turbulent heat transfer in a two-dimensional Rayleigh--Bénard convection model are analyzed. The flow is in a closed cell of aspect ratio four at a Rayleigh number ${\rm Ra}=10^6$ and at a Prandtl number ${\rm Pr}=10$. Three different Lagrangian analysis techniques based on graph Laplacians -- distance spectral trajectory clustering, time-averaged diffusion maps and finite-element based dynamic Laplacian discretization -- are used to monitor the turbulent fields along trajectories of massless Lagrangian particles in the evolving turbulent …
The evolution of a large-scale azimuthal velocity field in a rotating cylindrical layer of fluid with meridional convective circulation was studied experimentally. Two cases were considered: direct circulation provided by a rim heater at the periphery and indirect circulation provided by a central heater. The detailed 3D structure of the mean large-scale velocity field is reconstructed using the PIV technique. Due to the action of the Coriolis force the meridional flow results in differential rotation. Differential rotation is characterized by the mean values of radial and vertical gradients o…
Rayleigh-Bénard convection (RBC) and Taylor-Couette Flow (TCF) are two paradigmatic fluid dynamical systems frequently discussed together because of their many similarities despite their different geometries and forcing. Often these analogies require approximations, but in the limit of large radii where TCF becomes rotating plane Couette flow (RPC) exact relations can be established. When the flows are restricted to two spatial degrees of freedom there is an exact specification that maps the three velocity components in RPC to the two velocity components and one temperature field in RBC. Using…
We study, using direct numerical simulations, the effect of geometrical confinement on heat transport and flow structure in Rayleigh-Bénard convection in fluids with different Prandtl numbers. Our simulations span over two decades of Prandtl number $Pr$, $0.1 \leq Pr \leq 40$, with the Rayleigh number $Ra$ fixed at $10^8$. The width-to-height aspect ratio $Γ$ spans between $0.025$ and $0.25$ while the length-to-height aspect ratio is fixed at one. We first find that for $Pr \geq 0.5$, geometrical confinement can lead to a significant enhancement in heat transport as characterized by the Nussel…
