We present a complete symmetry classification of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model with $\mathcal{N}=0$, $1$ and $2$ supersymmetry (SUSY) on the basis of the Altland-Zirnbauer scheme in random matrix theory (RMT). For $\mathcal{N}=0$ and $1$ we consider generic $q$-body interactions in the Hamiltonian and find RMT classes that were not present in earlier classifications of the same model with $q=4$. We numerically establish quantitative agreement between the distributions of the smallest energy levels in the $\mathcal{N}=1$ SYK model and RMT. Furthermore, we delineate the distinctive structure of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ SYK model and provide its complete symmetry classification based on RMT for all eigenspaces of the fermion number operator. We corroborate our classification by detailed numerical comparisons with RMT and thus establish the presence of quantum chaotic dynamics in the $\mathcal{N}=2$ SYK model. We also introduce a new SYK-like model without SUSY that exhibits hybrid properties of the $\mathcal{N}=1$ and $\mathcal{N}=2$ SYK models and uncover its rich structure both analytically and numerically.
The nonlinear supermatrix $σ$-model is widely used to understand the physics of Anderson localization and the level statistics in noninteracting disordered electron systems. In contrast to the general belief that the supersymmetry method applies only to systems of noninteracting particles, we adopt this approach to the disorder averaging in the interacting models. In particular, we apply supersymmetry to study the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model, where the disorder averaging has so far been performed only within the replica approach. We use a slightly modified, time-reversal invariant version of…
We study correlation functions in the one-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric SYK model. The leading order 4-point correlation functions are computed by summing over ladder diagrams expanded in a suitable basis of conformal eigenfunctions. A novelty of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ model is that both symmetric and antisymmetric eigenfunctions are required. Although we use a component formalism, we verify that the operator spectrum and 4-point functions are consistent with $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry. We also confirm the maximally chaotic behavior of this model and comment briefly on its 6-point…
In this paper, we investigate the effect of supersymmetry on the symmetry classification of random matrix theory ensembles. We mainly consider the random matrix behaviors in the $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric generalization of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model, a toy model for the two-dimensional quantum black hole with supersymmetric constraint. Some analytical arguments and numerical results are given to show that the statistics of the supersymmetric SYK model could be interpreted as random matrix theory ensembles, with a different eight-fold classification from the original SYK model and so…
We discuss a supersymmetric generalization of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model. These are quantum mechanical models involving $N$ Majorana fermions. The supercharge is given by a polynomial expression in terms of the Majorana fermions with random coefficients. The Hamiltonian is the square of the supercharge. The ${\cal N}=1$ model with a single supercharge has unbroken supersymmetry at large $N$, but non-perturbatively spontaneously broken supersymmetry in the exact theory. We analyze the model by looking at the large $N$ equation, and also by performing numerical computations for small values of …
We use superspace methods to study an SYK-like model with $\mathcal N=2$ supersymmetry in one dimension, and an analog of this model in two dimensions. We find the four-point function as an expansion in the basis of eigenfunctions of the Casimir of $su(1,1|1)$. We also find retarded kernels and Lyapunov exponents for both cases.
We discuss the bi-local collective theory for the $\mathcal{N}=1,2$ supersymmetric Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SUSY SYK) models. We construct a bi-local superspace, and formulate the bi-local collective superfield theory of the one-dimensional SUSY vector model. The bi-local collective theory provides systematic analysis of the SUSY SYK models. We find that this bi-local collective theory naturally leads to supermatrix formulation in the bi-local superspace. This supermatrix formulation drastically simplifies the analysis of the SUSY SYK models. We also study $\mathcal{N}=1$ bi-local superconformal gen…
We study a 2-dimensional SYK model with $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ supersymmetry. The model describes $N$ chiral supermultiplets and $M$ Fermi supermultiplets with a $(q+1)$-field interaction. We solve the model analytically and numerically in the $N\gg 1$, $M\gg 1$ limit with $μ\equiv \frac{M}{N}$ being a free parameter. Two distinct higher-spin symmetries emerge when the $μ$ parameter approaches the two ends of its range. This is verified by the appearance of conserved higher-spin operators and the vanishing of chaotic behaviors in the two limits. Therefore this model provides a manifest realizatio…
We compute the thermodynamic properties of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) models of fermions with a conserved fermion number, $\mathcal{Q}$. We extend a previously proposed Schwarzian effective action to include a phase field, and this describes the low temperature energy and $\mathcal{Q}$ fluctuations. We obtain higher-dimensional generalizations of the SYK models which display disordered metallic states without quasiparticle excitations, and we deduce their thermoelectric transport coefficients. We also examine the corresponding properties of Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theories on black brane geom…
We study $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) models with complex fermions at non-zero background charge. Motivated by multi-charge supersymmetric black holes, we propose a new $\mathcal{N}=2$ SYK model with multiple $U(1)$ symmetries, integer charges, and a non-vanishing supersymmetric index, realizing features not present in known SYK models. In both models, a conformal solution with a super-Schwarzian mode emerges at low temperatures, signalling the appearance of nearly AdS$_2$/BPS physics. However, in contrast to complex SYK, the fermion scaling dimension depends on the b…
We introduce a family of partially entangled thermal states in the SYK model that interpolates between the thermo-field double state and a pure (product) state. The states are prepared by a euclidean path integral describing the evolution over two euclidean time segments separated by a local scaling operator $\mathcal{O}$. We argue that the holographic dual of this class of states consists of two black holes with their interior regions connected via a domain wall, described by the worldline of a massive particle. We compute the size of the interior region and the entanglement entropy as a func…

We study the double-scaling limit of SYK (DS-SYK) model and elucidate the underlying quantum group symmetry. The DS-SYK model is characterized by a parameter $q$, and in the $q\rightarrow 1$ and low-energy limit it goes over to the familiar Schwarzian theory. We relate the chord and transfer-matrix picture to the motion of a ``boundary particle" on the Euclidean Poincar{é} disk, which underlies the single-sided Schwarzian model. $AdS_2$ carries an action of $\mathfrak{s}\mathfrak{l}(2,{\mathbb R}) \simeq \mathfrak{s}\mathfrak{u}(1,1)$, and we argue that the symmetry of the full DS-SYK model is…
We compute the exact density of states and 2-point function of the $\mathcal{N} =2$ super-symmetric SYK model in the large $N$ double-scaled limit, by using combinatorial tools that relate the moments of the distribution to sums over oriented chord diagrams. In particular we show how SUSY is realized on the (highly degenerate) Hilbert space of chords. We further calculate analytically the number of ground states of the model in each charge sector at finite $N$, and compare it to the results from the double-scaled limit. Our results reduce to the super-Schwarzian action in the low energy short …

Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) or embedded random ensembles are models of $N$ fermions with random k-body interactions. They play an important role in understanding black hole dynamics, quantum chaos, and thermalization. We study out of equilibrium scenarios in these systems and show they display perfect decoherence at all times. This peculiar feature makes them very attractive in the context of the quantum-to-classical transition and the emergence of classical general relativity. Based on this feature and unitarity, we propose a rate/continuity equation for the dynamics of the $\mathcal{O}(e^N)$ mic…
In this paper, we introduce an $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric SYK model with $SO(q)$ global symmetry. We study the large $N$ expansion of the bi-local collective action of our model. At strong coupling limit, this model exhibits a super-reparametrization symmetry, and the $SO(q)$ global symmetry is enhanced to a $\widehat{SO}(q)$ local symmetry. The corresponding symmetry algebra is the semi-direct product of the super-Virasoro and the super-Kac-Moody algebras. These emergent symmetries are spontaneously and explicitly broken, which leads to a low energy effective action: super-Schwarzian acti…
We investigate a new realization of extended quantum-mechanical supersymmetry. We first show that an $\mathcal{N}=2$ quantum-mechanical supersymmetry is hidden in the four-dimensional (4D) spectrum of the Kaluza-Klein decomposition for the higher dimensional Dirac field, that is, Kaluza-Klein mode functions of 4D right-handed spinors and 4D left-handed ones form $\mathcal{N}=2$ supermultiplets. In addition to $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry, we discover that an $\mathcal{N}$-extended supersymmetry ($\mathcal{N} = d+2\ (d+1)$ for $d=$ even (odd) extra dimensions) is further hidden in the 4D spect…
We show how 1+1-dimensional fermionic symmetry-protected topological states (SPTs, i.e. nontrivial short-range entangled gapped phases of quantum matter whose boundary exhibits 't Hooft anomaly and whose bulk cannot be deformed into a trivial tensor product state under finite-depth local unitary transformations only in the presence of global symmetries), indeed can be unwound to a trivial state by enlarging the Hilbert space via adding extra degrees of freedom and suitably extending the global symmetries. The extended projective global symmetry on the boundary can become supersymmetric in a sp…
We solve the Wess-Zumino consistency conditions of $\mathcal{N}=1$ off-shell conformal supergravity in four dimensions and determine the general form of the superconformal anomalies for arbitrary $a$ and $c$ anomaly coefficients to leading non trivial order in the gravitino. Besides the well known Weyl and $R$-symmetry anomalies, we compute explicitly the fermionic $\mathcal{Q}$- and $\mathcal{S}$-supersymmetry anomalies. In particular, we show that $\mathcal{Q}$-supersymmetry is anomalous if and only if $R$-symmetry is anomalous. The $\mathcal{Q}$- and $\mathcal{S}$-supersymmetry anomalies gi…
We analyse various two dimensional theories arising from compactification of type II and heterotic string theory on asymmetric orbifolds. We find extra supersymmetry generators arising from twisted sectors, giving rise to exotic supersymmetry algebras. Among others we discover new cases with a large number of supercharges, such as $\mathcal{N}=(20,8)$, $\mathcal{N}=(24,8)$, $\mathcal{N}=(32,0)$, $\mathcal{N}=(24,24)$ and $\mathcal{N}=(48,0)$.
We investigate the behaviour of two-dimensional quantum field theories with $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ supersymmetry under a deformation induced by the `$T\bar{T}$' composite operator. We show that the deforming operator can be defined by a point-splitting regularisation in such a way as to preserve $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ supersymmetry. As an example of this construction, we work out the deformation of a free $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ theory and compare to that induced by the Noether stress-energy tensor. Finally, we show that the $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ supersymmetric deformed action actually possesses $\mathcal…
We consider the $U(1) ^{n}$ extension of the effective $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric $U(1) \times U(1) $ model of $arXiv:1204.2141$; and study the explicit relationship between partial breaking of $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry constraint and D3 brane tadpole anomaly of type IIB string on Calabi-Yau threefolds in presence of H$^{RR}$ and H$^{NS}$ fluxes. We also comment on supersymmetry breaking in the particular $\mathcal{N}=2$ $U(1) $ Maxwell theory; and study its interpretation in connection with the tadpole anomaly with extra localized flux sources.
We find a class of scale-anomaly-free $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric quantum systems with non-vanishing potential terms where space and time scale with distinct exponents. Our results generalise the known case of the supersymmetric inverse square potential to a larger class of scaling symmetries.
We study the general deformation of $\mathcal N=2$ supersymmetry transformations of a vector multiplet that forms a (constant) triplet under the $SU(2)$ R-symmetry corresponding to the magnetic dual of the triplet of the Fayet-Iliopoulos (FI) parameters. We show that in the presence of both triplets, the induced scalar potential of a vector multiplet with generic prepotential has always a minimum that realises partial breaking of $\mathcal N=2\to \mathcal N=1$ supersymmetry. We then consider the impact of the deformation in the Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) action where one supersymmetry is non-line…
We formulate $\mathcal{N}=2$ global supersymmetric Lagrangians of self-interacting vector multiplets in terms of variant multiplets, whose non-propagating fields are replaced with gauge three-forms. Setting the three-forms on-shell results in a dynamical generation of the parameters entering the scalar potential. As an application, we study how gauge three-forms may determine the partial breaking of $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry and how they affect the low energy effective description.
A classification of soft SUSY breaking deformation of general four dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFT is provided. Given the large class of newly discovered $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs and their known properties such as the central charges and full information of BPS operators, it is possible to get a huge number of new $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFTs and non-supersymmetric CFTs. Many properties of these new $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFTs such as central charges, chiral spectrum and Seiberg duality can be derived from known information of parent $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFT.
It was recently shown that string theory on $\mathrm{AdS}_3 \times \mathrm{S}^3 \times \mathbb{T}^4$ with minimal NS-NS flux ($k = 1$) is exactly dual to the symmetric orbifold of T4. Here we show that a similar statement also holds for the $D_n$ orbifolds of these backgrounds that have $\mathcal{N} = (2, 2)$ supersymmetry. In this case the CFT dual is the symmetric orbifold of $\mathbb{T}^4/D_n$.
We discuss a new realization of $\mathcal{N}$-extended quantum-mechanical supersymmetry (QM SUSY) with central charges hidden in the four-dimensional (4D) mass spectrum of higher dimensional Dirac action with curved extra dimensions. We show that this $\mathcal{N}$-extended QM SUSY results from symmetries in extra dimensions, and the supermultiplets in this supersymmetry algebra correspond to the Bogomol'nyi--Prasad--Sommerfield states. Furthermore, we examine the model of the $S^2$ extra dimension with a magnetic monopole background and confirm that the $\mathcal{N}$-extended QM SUSY explains…
We determine the asymptotic symmetry algebra (for fields of low spin) of the $M\times M$ matrix extended Vasiliev theories on AdS$_3$ and find that it agrees with the $\mathcal{W}$-algebra of their proposed coset duals. Previously it was noticed that for $M=2$ the supersymmetry increases from $\mathcal{N}=2$ to $\mathcal{N}=4$. We study more systematically this type of supersymmetry enhancements and find that, although the higher spin algebra has extended supersymmetry for all $M\geq 2$, the corresponding asymptotic symmetry algebra fails to be superconformal except for $M=2$, when it has larg…
In this paper, we will analyse three dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory coupled to matter fields in $SIM(1)$ superspace formalism. The original theory which is invariant under the full Lorentz group has $\mathcal{N} =1$ supersymmetry. However, when we break the Lorentz symmetry down to $SIM(1)$ group, the $SIM(1)$ superspace will break half the supersymmetry of the original theory. Thus, the resultant theory in $SIM(1)$ superspace will have $\mathcal{N} =1/2$ supersymmetry. This is the first time that $\mathcal{N} =1 $ supersymmetry will be broken down to $\mathcal{N} =1/2$ supersymm…
For lattice formulations of the two-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ Wess--Zumino (2D $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ WZ) model on the basis of the Nicolai map, we show that supersymmetry (SUSY) and other symmetries are restored in the continuum limit without fine tuning, to all orders in perturbation theory. This provides a theoretical basis for use of these lattice formulations for computation of correlation functions.
We conjecture infrared emergent $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetry for a class of three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ $U(1)$ gauge theories coupled with a single chiral multiplet. One example is the case where $U(1)$ gauge group has the Chern-Simons level $-\frac{3}2$ and the chiral multiplet has gauge charge $+1$. Other examples are related to this example either by known dualities or rescaling the Abelian gauge field. We give three independent evidences for the conjecture: 1) exact match between the central charges of the $U(1)$ R-symmetry current and the $U(1)$ topological symmetry current, 2) sem…
Any 4d theory possessing $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetry admits a so called $\mathcal{S}$-multiplet, containing the conserved energy-momentum tensor and supercurrent. When a defect is introduced into such a theory, the $\mathcal{S}$-multiplet receives contributions localised on the defect, which indicate the breaking of some translation symmetry and consequently also some supersymmetries. We call this the defect multiplet. We classify such terms corresponding to half-BPS defects which can be either three-dimensional, preserving 3d $\mathcal{N}=1$, or two-dimensional, preserving $\mathcal{N}=(0,2…
The $T\bar{T}$ deformation of a supersymmetric two-dimensional theory preserves the original supersymmetry. Moreover, in several interesting cases the deformed theory possesses additional non-linearly realized supersymmetries. We show this for certain $\mathcal N =(2,2)$ models in two dimensions, where we observe an intriguing similarity with known $\mathcal N=1 $ models in four dimensions. This suggests that higher-dimensional models with non-linearly realized supersymmetries might also be obtained from $T\bar{T}$-like flow equations. We show that in four dimensions this is indeed the case fo…
We describe the construction of $2+1$-dimensional toplogically massive adS gravity with ${\mathcal{N}}$-extended supersymmetry in superspace by means of introducing a compensating hypermultiplet for the super-Weyl invariance. For $\mathcal{N}\geq 3$ the scalar multiplet must be on shell and the potential for the scalar compensator is completely determined by the geometry. As a consequence the resulting massive theory has no free parameter for $\mathcal{N}\geq 4$. For $\mathcal{N}= 4$ we show that this leads to topologically massive gravity at the chiral point and construct the corresponding of…
We study partial supersymmetry breaking in effective $\mathcal{N}=2$ U$ \left( 1\right) ^{n}$ gauge theory coupled to complex hypermultiplets by using the method of \textrm{"{\small arXiv:1501.07842}" to which we refer to as ADFT method}. We derive the generalisation of the symplectic invariant ADFT formula $ζ_{a}=\frac{1}{2}\varepsilon _{abc}\left(\mathcal{P}^{bM}\mathcal{C}_{MN}\mathcal{P}^{cN}\right) $ capturing information on partial breaking. Our extension of this anomaly is expressed like $d_{a}=\frac{1}{2}\varepsilon _{abc}\mathbb{P}^{bM}\mathcal{C}_{MN}\mathbb{P}^{cN}+\mathcal{J}_{a}$;…
We clarify the structure of the four-dimensional low-energy effective action that encodes the conformal and $U(1)$ R-symmetry anomalies in an $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric field theory. The action depends on the dilaton, $τ$, associated with broken conformal symmetry, and the Goldstone mode, $β$, of the broken $U(1)$ R-symmetry. We present the action for general curved spacetime and background gauge field up to and including all possible four-derivative terms. The result, constructed from basic principles, extends and clarifies the structure found by Schwimmer and Theisen in arXiv:1011.0696 u…
In this paper we consider non-anticommutative field theories in $\mathcal{N} =2$ superspace formalism on three-dimensional manifolds with a boundary. We modify the original Lagrangian in such a way that it preserves half the supersymmetry even in the presence of a boundary. We also analyse the partial breaking of supersymmetry caused by non-anticommutativity between fermionic coordinates. Unlike in four dimensions, in three dimensions a theory with $\mathcal{N} =1/2$ supersymmetry cannot be obtained by a non-anticommutative deformation of an $\mathcal{N} =1$ theory. However, in this paper we c…
In this paper we will discuss non-anticommutative deformations of the harmonic superspace. We will analyse the non-anticommutative deformation of the superspace that break the supersymmetry from $\mathcal{N} =3$ supersymmetry to $\mathcal{N} =2$ supersymmetry. We will then study the ABJ theory in this non-anticommutative superspace. This deformed ABJ theory will be shown to posses $\mathcal{N} =5$ supersymmetry.
