By numerically investigating the conservation law of the supercurrent, we confirm the restoration of supersymmetry in Sugino's lattice formulation of the two-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ supersymmetric SU(2) Yang-Mills theory with a scalar mass term. Subtlety in the case without the scalar mass term, that appears to ruin perturbative power counting, is also pointed out.
For lattice formulations of the two-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ Wess--Zumino (2D $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ WZ) model on the basis of the Nicolai map, we show that supersymmetry (SUSY) and other symmetries are restored in the continuum limit without fine tuning, to all orders in perturbation theory. This provides a theoretical basis for use of these lattice formulations for computation of correlation functions.
We study a discretization of ${\cal N}=2$ super Yang-Mills theory which possesses a single exact supersymmetry at non-zero lattice spacing. This supersymmetry arises after a reformulation of the theory in terms of {\it twisted} fields. In this paper we derive the action of the other twisted supersymmetries on the component fields and study, using Monte Carlo simulation, a series of corresponding Ward identities. Our results for SU(2) and SU(3) support a restoration of these additional supersymmetries without fine tuning in the infinite volume continuum limit. Additionally we present evidence s…
We perform lattice simulations of two-dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with sixteen supercharges with a lattice action which has two exact supercharges (Sugino lattice action). According to the gauge/gravity duality, the theory at finite temperature is expected to be well described by the corresponding black 1-branes, at low temperature in the large N limit. We aim to confirm the duality conjecture by comparing the lattice results with the theoretical predictions obtained in the gravity side. In this article, at the beginning of this study, we examine the supersymmetric Ward-Takaha…

We derive lattice actions for Yang-Mills quantum mechanics for models with $\cQ=4, 8$ and 16 supercharges which possess an exact supersymmetry at non-zero lattice spacing. These are obtained by dimensional reduction of twisted versions of the corresponding super Yang-Mills theories in $D=2, 3$ and 4 dimensions.
We propose a lattice formulation of three dimensional super Yang-Mills model with a twisted N=4 supersymmetry. The extended supersymmetry algebra of all the eight supercharges is fully and exactly realized on the lattice with a modified "Leibniz rule". The formulation we employ here is a three dimensional extension of manifestly gauge covariant method which was developed in our previous proposal of Dirac-Kaehler twisted N=2 super Yang-Mills on two dimensional lattice. The twisted N=4 supersymmetry algebra is geometrically realized on a three dimensional lattice with link supercharges and the u…
We report our numerical simulation of two-dimensional N=(2,2) super Yang-Mills. The lattice model we use is one proposed by F.Sugino which keeps one exact supersymmetry at finite lattice spacing. We use Rational Hybrid Monte Carlo (RHMC) method to implement the dynamical fermion. We apply the simulation to measure the ground state energy which is useful to observe dynamical SUSY breaking.
We propose a lattice action for two dimensional super Yang-Mills theory with a twisted N=2 supersymmetry. The extended supersymmetry is fully and exactly realized on the lattice. The method employed is quite general and its extension to the N=4 supersymmetry in four dimensions is briefly presented. The lattice has a new type of ``fermionic'' links, where odd Grassmann variables, supercharges and fermionic connections sit. The Leibniz rule is preserved on the lattice, although in a modified ``shifted'' form that takes into account the link nature of both derivatives and supercharges. Superfield…
Recently it has been shown how a topologically twisted version of ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills may be discretized in such a way as to preserve one scalar supersymmetry at nonzero lattice spacing. The remaining fifteen supersymmetries are broken by terms of ${\cal O}(a)$ where $a$ is the lattice spacing. One would like to know whether these remaining supersymmetries are regained in the continuum limit $a \to 0$ and, if not, how much tuning of the couplings in the lattice action is required. In this paper we derive the form of these additional twisted supersymmetries by combining a set of discr…
We construct SU($N$) super Yang-Mills theories with extended supersymmetry on hypercubic lattices of various dimensions keeping one or two supercharges exactly. It is based on topological field theory formulation for the super Yang-Mills theories. Gauge fields are represented by compact unitary link variables, and the exact supercharges on the lattice are nilpotent up to gauge transformations. In particular, the lattice models are free from the vacuum degeneracy problem, which was encountered in earlier approaches. Thus, we do not need to introduce any supersymmetry breaking terms, and the exa…
We construct two-dimensional N=(2,2) lattice super Yang-Mills theory, where the gauge and Higgs fields are all represented by U(N) compact variables, with keeping one exact supercharge along the line of the papers [1,2,3]. Interestingly, requirements of the exact supersymmetry as well as of the compact gauge and Higgs fields lead to the gauge group U(N) rather than SU(N). As a result of the perturbative renormalization argument, the model is shown to flow to the target continuum theory without any fine-tuning. Different from the case of noncompact Higgs fields, the path integral along the flat…
We continue to construct lattice super Yang-Mills theories along the line discussed in the previous papers \cite{sugino, sugino2}. In our construction of ${\cal N}=2, 4$ theories in four dimensions, the problem of degenerate vacua seen in \cite{sugino} is resolved by extending some fields and soaking up would-be zero-modes in the continuum limit, while in the weak coupling expansion some surplus modes appear both in bosonic and fermionic sectors reflecting the exact supersymmetry. A slight modification to the models is made such that all the surplus modes are eliminated in two- and three-dimen…
We show how to derive the supersymmetric orbifold lattices of Cohen et al. \cite{Cohen:2003xe,Cohen:2003qw} and Kaplan et al. \cite{Kaplan:2005ta} by direct discretization of an appropriate twisted supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. We examine in detail the four supercharge two dimensional theory and the theory with sixteen supercharges in four dimensions. The continuum limit of the latter theory is the well known Marcus twist of ${\cal N}=4$ Yang-Mills. The lattice models are gauge invariant and possess one exact supersymmetry at non-zero lattice spacing.
Supersymmetry provides a well-established theoretical framework for extensions of the standard model of particle physics and the general understanding of quantum field theories. We summarise here our investigations of N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with SU(2) gauge symmetry using the non-perturbative first-principles method of numerical lattice simulations. The strong interactions of gluons and their superpartners, the gluinos, lead to confinement, and a spectrum of bound states including glueballs, mesons, and gluino-glueballs emerges at low energies. For unbroken supersymmetry these pa…
Supersymmetry (SUSY) and supersymmetric field theories are an interesting topic for numerical lattice simulations. Similar to the chiral symmetry there is also no local realization of (interacting) supersymmetry on the lattice. I briefly review the basic reasons for the breaking of supersymmetry. One attempt to solve the problem uses a Ginsparg-Wilson relation for supersymmetry. However, apart from the free theory, a solution of this relation has so far not been found. For supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory a fine-tuning of the bare gluino mass is enough to arrive at a supersymmetric conti…
We propose a discretization of two dimensional Euclidean Yang-Mills theories with N=2 supersymmetry which preserves exactly both gauge invariance and an element of supersymmetry. The approach starts from the twisted form of the continuum super Yang Mills action which we show may be written in terms of two real Kahler-Dirac fields whose components transform into each other under the twisted supersymmetry. Once the theory is written in this geometrical language it is straightforward to discretize by mapping the component tensor fields to appropriate geometrical structures in the lattice and by r…
We construct super Yang-Mills theories with extended supersymmetry on hypercubic lattices of various dimensions keeping one or two supercharges exactly. Gauge fields are represented by ordinary unitary link variables, and the exact supercharges are nilpotent up to gauge transformations. Among the models, we show that the desired continuum theories are obtained without any fine tuning of parameters for the cases ${\cal N}=2, 4, 8$ in two-dimensions.
A lattice formulation of a three dimensional super Yang-Mills model with a twisted N=4 supersymmetry is proposed. The extended supersymmetry algebra of all eight supercharges is fully and exactly realized on the lattice with a modified "Leibniz rule". The formulation we employ here is a three dimensional extension of the manifestly gauge covariant method which was developed in our previous proposal of Dirac-Kähler twisted N=2 super Yang-Mills on a two dimensional lattice. The twisted N=4 supersymmetry algebra is geometrically realized on a three dimensional lattice with link supercharges and t…
We formulate ${\cal N}$=1 super Yang-Mills theory in 3+1 dimensions on a two dimensional transverse lattice using supersymmetric discrete light cone quantization in the large-$N_c$ limit. This formulation is free of fermion species doubling. We are able to preserve one supersymmetry. We find a rich, non-trivial behavior of the mass spectrum as a function of the coupling $g\sqrt{N_c}$, and see some sort of "transition" in the structure of a bound state as we go from the weak coupling to the strong coupling. Using a toy model we give an interpretation of the rich behavior of the mass spectrum. W…
We present a formulation of N=(1,1), Super Yang-Mills theory in 2+1 dimensions using a transverse lattice methods that exactly preserves one supersymmetry. First, using a Lagrangian approach we obtain a standard transverse lattice formulation of the Hamiltonian. We then show that the Hamiltonian also can be written discretely as the square of a supercharge and that this produces a different result. Problems associated with the discrete realization of the full supercharge algebra are discussed. Numerically we solve for the bound states of the theory in the large N_c approximation and we find go…
We construct a variety of supersymmetric gauge theories on a spatial lattice, including N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in 3+1 dimensions. Exact lattice supersymmetry greatly reduces or eliminates the need for fine tuning to arrive at the desired continuum limit in these examples.
Inspired by the ideas from topological field theory it is possible to rewrite the supersymmetric charges of certain classes of extended supersymmetric Yang--Mills (SYM) theories in such a way that they are compatible with the discretization on a Euclidean spacetime lattice. Such theories are known as maximally twisted SYM theories. In this review we discuss the construction and some applications of such classes of theories. The one-loop perturbative renormalization of the four-dimensional lattice ${\cal N}=4$ SYM is discussed in particular. The lattice theories constructed using twisted approa…
We exploit a conjectured continuity between super Yang-Mills on $\mathbb R^3\times \mathbb S^1$ and pure Yang-Mills to study $k$-strings in the latter theory. As expected, we find that Wilson-loop correlation functions depend on the N-ality of a representation ${\cal R}$ to the leading order. However, the next-to-leading order correction is not universal and is given by the group characters, in the representation ${\cal R}$, of the permutation group. We also study W-bosons in super Yang-Mills and show that they are deconfined on the string worldsheet, and therefore, can change neither the stri…
We construct super Yang-Mills theories with ${\cal N}=2, 4$ supersymmetries on the two-dimensional square lattice keeping one or two supercharges exactly. Along the same line as the previous paper \cite{sugino}, the construction is based on topological field theory formulation. In order to resolve the problem of degenerate classical vacua encountered in the previous paper, we consider two kinds of modifications of the action. For one of them, any supersymmetry breaking terms do not need to be introduced, and the formulations exactly realize some of supersymmetries at the lattice level. Our lat…
The introduction of a space-time lattice as a regulator of field theories breaks symmetries associated with continuous space-time, i.e.\ Poincar{é} invariance and supersymmetry. A non-zero gluino mass in the supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory causes an additional soft breaking of supersymmetry. We employ the lattice form of SUSY Ward identities, imposing that their continuum form would be recovered when removing the lattice regulator, to obtain the critical hopping parameter where broken symmetries can be recovered.
We examine the possibility of dynamical supersymmetry breaking in two-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = (2, 2)$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. The theory is discretized on a Euclidean spacetime lattice using a supersymmetric lattice action. We compute the vacuum energy of the theory at finite temperature and take the zero temperature limit. Supersymmetry will be spontaneously broken in this theory if the measured ground state energy is non-zero. By performing simulations on a range of lattices up to $96 \times 96$ we are able to perform a careful extrapolation to the continuum limit for a wide ran…
Non-perturbative investigations of $\mathcal N = 4$ supersymmetric Yang--Mills theory formulated on a space-time lattice have advanced rapidly in recent years. Large-scale numerical calculations are currently being carried out based on a construction that exactly preserves a single supersymmetry at non-zero lattice spacing. A recent development is the creation of an improved lattice action through a new procedure to regulate flat directions in a manner compatible with this supersymmetry, by modifying the moduli equations. In this proceedings I briefly summarize this new procedure and discuss t…
We propose an all orders beta function for ordinary Yang-Mills theories with or without fermions inspired by the Novikov-Shifman-Vainshtein-Zakharov beta function of N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories. The beta function allows us to bound the conformal window. When restricting to one adjoint Weyl fermion we show how the proposed beta function matches the one of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. The running of the pure Yang-Mills coupling is computed and the deviation from the two loop result is presented. We then compare the deviation with the one obtained from lattice data also with respect to…
The lattice Wess-Zumino model written in terms of the Ginsparg-Wilson relation is invariant under a generalized supersymmetry transformation which is determined by an iterative procedure in the coupling constant. By studying the associated Ward-Takahashi identity up to order $g^2$ we show that this lattice supersymmetry automatically leads to restoration of continuum supersymmetry without fine tuning. In particular, the scalar and fermion renormalization wave functions coincide.
We formulate a Euclidean spacetime lattice whose continuum limit is (2,2) supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in two dimensions, a theory which possesses four supercharges and an anomalous global chiral symmetry. The lattice action respects one exact supersymmetry, which allows the target theory to emerge in the continuum limit without fine-tuning. Our method exploits an orbifold construction described previously for spatial lattices in Minkowski space, and can be generalized to more complicated theories with additional supersymmetry and more spacetime dimensions.
We summarize recent progress in lattice studies of four-dimensional N=4 supersymmetric Yang--Mills theory and present preliminary results from ongoing investigations. Our work is based on a construction that exactly preserves a single supersymmetry at non-zero lattice spacing, and we review a new procedure to regulate flat directions by modifying the moduli equations in a manner compatible with this supersymmetry. This procedure defines an improved lattice action that we have begun to use in numerical calculations. We discuss some highlights of these investigations, including the static potent…
We discuss a new approach to putting supersymmetric theories on the lattice. The basic idea is to start from a {\it twisted} formulation of the underlying supersymmetric theory in which the fermions are represented as grassmann valued antisymmetric tensor fields. The original supersymmetry algebra is replaced by a twisted algebra which contains a scalar nilpotent supercharge $Q$. Furthermore the action of the theory can then be written as the $Q$-variation of some function. The case of ${\cal N}=2$ super Yang-Mills theory in two dimensions is discussed in some detail. We then present our propo…
We discuss the motivations, difficulties and progress in the study of supersymmetric lattice gauge theories focusing in particular on ${\cal N}=1$ and ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills in four dimensions. Brief reviews of the corresponding lattice formalisms are given and current results are presented and discussed. We conclude with a summary of the main aspects of current work and prospects for the future.
We present a procedure to improve the lattice definition of $\mathcal N = 4$ supersymmetric Yang--Mills theory. The lattice construction necessarily involves U(1) flat directions, and we show how these can be lifted without violating the exact lattice supersymmetry. The basic idea is to modify the equations of motion of an auxiliary field, which determine the moduli space of the system. Applied to numerical calculations, the resulting improved lattice action leads to dramatically reduced violations of supersymmetric Ward identities and much more rapid approach to the continuum limit.
We construct a lattice action for ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions which is local, gauge invariant, free of spectrum doubling and possesses a single exact supersymmetry. Our construction starts from the observation that the fermions of the continuum theory can be mapped into the component fields of a single real anticommuting Kahler-Dirac field. The original supersymmetry algebra then implies the existence of a nilpotent scalar supercharge $Q$ and a corresponding set of bosonic superpartners. Using this field content we write down a $Q$-exact action and show that, with a…
We formulate Euclidean spacetime lattices whose continuum limits are supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories with eight supercharges in two and three dimensions. The lattice actions are themselves supersymmetric.
Supersymmetry is one of the possible scenarios for physics beyond the standard model. The building blocks of this scenario are supersymmetric gauge theories. In our work we study the $\mathcal{N}=1$ Super-Yang-Mills (SYM) theory with gauge group SU(2) dimensionally reduced to two-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ SYM theory. In our lattice formulation we break supersymmetry and chiral symmetry explicitly while preserving R symmetry. By fine tuning the bar-mass of the fermions in the Lagrangian we construct a supersymmetric continuum theory. To this aim we carefully investigate mass spectra and Ward …
We present results from a lattice study of SU(2) color, N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory using domain wall fermions. Supersymmetry in this particular lattice formulation is expected to emerge in the continuum and chiral limits without any fine-tuning of operators. Preliminary results for the static quark potential, residual mass, chiral condensate and spectrum--a potential indicator of supersymmetry restoration--are presented and discussed.
We investigate the generation of a gluon screening mass in Yang-Mills theory in the Landau gauge. We propose a gauge-fixing procedure where the Gribov ambiguity is overcome by summing over all Gribov copies with some weight function. This can be formulated in terms of a local field theory involving constrained, nonlinear sigma model fields. We show that a phenomenon of radiative symmetry restoration occurs in this theory, similar to what happens in the standard nonlinear sigma model in two dimensions. This results in a nonzero gluon screening mass, as seen in lattice simulations.
We study the effects of quenching in Super-Yang-Mills theory. While supersymmetry is broken, the lagrangian acquires a new flavour U(1 | 1) symmetry. The anomaly structure thus differs from the unquenched case. We derive the corresponding low-energy effective lagrangian. As a consequence, we predict the mass splitting expected in numerical simulations for particles belonging to the lowest-lying supermultiplet. An estimate of the systematic error due to quenching follows.
In $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, regularised on a space-time lattice, in addition to the breaking by the gluino mass term, supersymmetry is broken explicitly by the lattice regulator. In addition to the parameter tuning in the theory, the supersymmetric Ward identities can be used as a tool to investigate lattice artefacts as well as to check whether supersymmetry can be recovered in the chiral and continuum limits. In this paper we present the numerical results of an analysis of the supersymmetric Ward identities for our available gauge ensembles at different values of the…
We are entering an era where a number of large-scale lattice simulations of four-dimensional supersymmetric theories are under way. Moreover, proposals for how to approach such studies continue to progress. One particular line of research in this direction is described here. General actions for super-QCD, including counterterms required on the lattice, are given. We obtain the number of fine-tunings that is required, once gauge and flavor symmetries are accounted for, provided Ginsparg-Wilson fermions are used for the gauginos. We also review and extend our recent work on lattice formulations …
A method is proposed for latticizing a class of supersymmetric gauge theories, including N=4 super Yang-Mills. The technique is inspired by recent work on ``deconstruction''. Part of the target theory's supersymmetry is realized exactly on the lattice, reducing or eliminating the need for fine tuning. (Talk based on the paper "Supersymmetry on a Spatial Lattice", hep-lat/0206019, by D.B.K., Emmanuel Katz and Mithat Unsal).
We study the effects of quenching in Super-Yang-Mills theory. While supersymmetry is broken, the lagrangian acquires a new flavour $U(1 \mid 1)$ symmetry. The anomaly structure thus differs from the unquenched case. We derive the corresponding low-energy effective lagrangian. As a consequence, we predict the mass splitting expected in numerical simulations for particles belonging to the lowest-lying supermultiplet.
We present the first results obtained with a Hybrid Molecular Dynamics algorithm applied to an $N=1$ SU(2) Super-Yang--Mills on the lattice. We derive the Hamilton equations of motion for the system with Wilson gluinos and present preliminary results on small lattices.
We describe a new approach to the problem of putting supersymmetric theories on the lattice. The basic idea is to discretize a {\it twisted} formulation of the supersymmetric theory. For certain theories with extended supersymmetry these twisted formulations contain only integer spin fields. The twisting exposes a scalar nilpotent supercharge which generates an exact lattice symmetry. We gives examples from quantum mechanics, sigma models and Yang-Mills theories.
Supersymmetry, like Poincare symmetry, is softly broken at finite lattice spacing provided the gaugino mass term is strongly suppressed. Domain wall fermions provide the mechanism for suppressing this term by approximately imposing chiral symmetry on the lattice. We present the first numerical simulations of N=1 supersymmetric SU(2) Yang-Mills on the lattice in d=4 dimensions using domain wall fermions.
We consider a lattice formulation of the four dimensional N=1 Wess-Zumino model that uses the Ginsparg-Wilson relation. This formulation has an exact supersymmetry on the lattice. We show that the corresponding Ward-Takahashi identity is satisfied, both at fixed lattice spacing and in the continuum limit. The calculation is performed in lattice perturbation theory up to order $g^2$ in the coupling constant. We also show that this Ward-Takahashi identity determines the finite part of the scalar and fermion renormalization wave functions which automatically leads to restoration of supersymmetry …

We examine the link approach to constructing a lattice theory of N=2 super Yang Mills theory in two dimensions. The goal of this construction is to provide a discretization of the continuum theory which preserves all supersymmetries at non-zero lattice spacing. We show that this approach suffers from an inconsistency and argue that a maximum of just one of the supersymmetries can be implemented on the lattice.
We present a study of D=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills matrix models with SO(3) mass terms based on the Monte Carlo method. In the bosonic models we show the existence of an exotic first/second order transition from a phase with a well defined background geometry (the fuzzy sphere) to a phase with commuting matrices with no geometry in the sense of Connes. At the transition point the sphere expands abruptly to infinite size then it evaporates as we increase the temperature (the gauge coupling constant). The transition looks first order due to the discontinuity in the action whereas it looks secon…

In the previous paper we studied Dirac fermions in a non-Abelian random vector potential by using lattice supersymmetry. By the lattice regularization, the system of disordered Dirac fermions is defined without any ambiguities. We showed there that at strong-disorder limit correlation function of the fermion local density of states decays algebraically at the band center. In this paper, we shall reexamine the multi-flavor or multi-species case rather in detail and argue that the correlator at the band center decays {\em exponentially} for the case of a {\em large} number of flavors. This means…
