We investigate the relationship between the symmetric, exterior and classical cohomologies of groups. The first two theories were introduced respectively by Staic and Zarelua. We show in particular, that there is a map from exterior cohomology to symmetric cohomology which is a split monomorphism in general and an isomorphism in many cases, but not always. We introduce two spectral sequences which help to explain the realtionship between these cohomology groups. As a sample application we obtain that symmetric and classical cohomologies are isomorphic for torsion free groups.
Symmetric cohomology of groups, defined by M. Staic in [2], is similar to the way one defines the cyclic cohomology for algebras. We show that there is a well-defined restriction, conjugation and transfer map in symmetric cohomology, which form a Mackey functor under a restriction. Some new properties for the symmetric cohomology group using normalized cochains are also given.
We compute the dimensions of the Hochschild cohomology of symmetric groups over prime fields in low degrees. This involves us in studying some partition identities and generating functions of the dimensions in any fixed degree of the Hochschild cohomology of symmetric groups.
We give an explicit characterization for group extensions that correspond to elements of the symmetric cohomology $HS^2(G,A)$. We also give conditions for the map $HS^n(G,A)\to H^n(G,A)$ to be injective.
In this paper, we introduce a symmetric continuous cohomology of topological groups. This is obtained by topologizing a recent construction due to Staic (J. Algebra 322 (2009), 1360-1378), where a symmetric cohomology of abstract groups is constructed. We give a characterization of topological group extensions that correspond to elements of the second symmetric continuous cohomology. We also show that the symmetric continuous cohomology of a profinite group with coefficients in a discrete module is equal to the direct limit of the symmetric cohomology of finite groups. In the end, we also defi…
In this paper we study the structure of the rational cohomology groups of the IA-automorphism group $\mathrm{IA}_3$ of a free group of rank three by using combinatorial group theory and representation theory. In particular, we detect non-trivial irreducible component in the second cohomology group of $\mathrm{IA}_3$, which does not contained in the image of the cup product map of the first cohomology groups. We also show that the image of the triple cup product map of the first cohomology groups in the third cohomology group is trivial. As a corollary, we obtain that the fourth term of the low…
We relate the generating functions of the dimensions of the Hochschild cohomology in any fixed degree of the symmetric groups with those of blocks of the symmetric groups. We show that the first Hochschild cohomology of a positive defect block of a symmetric group is non-zero, answering in the affirmative a question of the third author. To do this, we prove a formula expressing the dimension of degree one Hochschild cohomology as a sum of dimensions of centres of blocks of smaller symmetric groups. This in turn is a consequence of a general formula that makes more precise a theorem of our prev…
Let $G$ be a finite group of order $n$ and let $M$ be a $G$-module. We construct groups $H_*^\varkappa(G,M)$ for which $H_k^\varkappa (G,M^{tw}) \cong H^{n-k-1}_λ(G,M),$ where $M^{tw}$ is a twisting of a $G$-module $M$ defined in Section $5$ and $H^{*}_λ(G,M)$ is a variation of the group cohomology introduced by Zarelua, which in many cases is isomorphic to the symmetric cohomology of groups defined by Staic. The groups $H_*^\varkappa(G,M)$ come together with transformations from Tate cohomology. We find conditions under which these transformations are isomorphisms.
We extend the notion of a partial cohomology group $H^n(G,A)$ to the case of non-unital $A$ and find interpretations of $H^1(G,A)$ and $H^2(G,A)$ in the theory of extensions of semilattices of abelian groups by groups.
We prove explicit and elementary formulas for the group homology and cohomology of a finite group with coefficients in any module. We describe in elementary terms the cohomology algebra $H^*(G,k)$ as a graded algebra for a finite group $G$ and a commutative ring $k.$
We show that for some finite group block algebras, with nontrivial defect groups, the first Hochschild cohomology is nontrivial. Along the way we obtain methods to investigate the nontriviality of the first Hochschild cohomology of some twisted group algebras.
An FI-module $V$ over a commutative ring $\bf{k}$ encodes a sequence $(V_n)_{n \geq 0}$ of representations of the symmetric groups $(\mathfrak{S}_n)_{n \geq 0}$ over $\bf{k}$. In this paper, we show that for a "finitely generated" FI-module $V$ over a field of characteristic $p$, the cohomology groups $H^t(\mathfrak{S}_n, V_n)$ are eventually periodic in $n$. We describe a recursive way to calculate the period and the periodicity range and show that the period is always a power of $p$. As an application, we show that if $\mathcal{M}$ is a compact, connected, oriented manifold of dimension $\ge…
We give a characterization of groups with twisted p-periodic cohomology in terms of group actions on mod p homology spheres. An equivalent algebraic characterization of such groups is also presented.
We generalize the result of Brandenbursky and Marcinkowski for the bounded cohomology of transformation groups to infinite volume case. To state the result, we introduce the notion of norm controlled cohomology as a generalization of bounded cohomology. This cohomology theory also provides a framework for relative quasimorphisms.
We prove that Hochschild cohomology of a certain class of fully group-graded algebras is a Mackey functor. We use the machinery of transfer maps between the Hochschild cohomology of symmetric algebras.
In this paper we introduce a new definition of the first non-abelian cohomology of topological groups. We relate the cohomology of a normal subgroup $N$ of a topological group $G$ and the quotient $G/N$ to the cohomology of $G$. We get the inflation-restriction exact sequence. Also, we obtain a seven-term exact cohomology sequence up to dimension 2. We give an interpretation of the first non-abelian cohomology of a topological group by the notion of a principle homogeneous space.
Bounded cohomology of groups was first studied by Gromov in 1982. Since then it has sparked much research in Geometric Group Theory. However, it is notoriously hard to explicitly compute bounded cohomology, even for most basic `non-positively curved' groups. On the other hand, there is a well-known interpretation of ordinary group cohomology in dimension 2 and 3 in terms of group extensions. The aim of this paper is to make this interpretation available for bounded group cohomology. This will involve quasihomomorphisms as defined and studied by Fujiwara and Kapovich.
Group cohomology of polynomial growth is defined for any finitely generated discrete group, using cochains that have polynomial growth with respect to the word length function. We give a geometric condition that guarantees that it agrees with the usual group cohomology and verify this condition for a class of combable groups. Our condition involves a chain complex that is closely related to exotic cohomology theories studied by Allcock and Gersten and by Mineyev.
Given a group satisfying sufficient finiteness properties, we discuss a group algebra criterion for vanishing of all its cohomology groups with unitary coefficients in a certain degree.
We disprove a conjecture stating that the integral cohomology of any crystallographic group Z^n \rtimes Z_m is given by the cohomology of Z_m with coefficients in the cohomology of the group Z^n, by providing a complete list of counterexamples up to dimension 5. We also find a counterexample with odd order holonomy, m=9, in dimension 8 and finish the computations of the cohomology of 6-dimensional crystallographic groups arising as orbifold fundamental groups of certain Calabi-Yau toroidal orbifolds.
We develop a cohomology theory of groups based on partial actions and explore its relation with the partial Schur multiplier as well as with cohomology of inverse semigroups.
We show that for topological groups and loop contractible coefficients the cohomology groups of continuous group cochains and of group cochains that are continuous on some identity neighbourhood are isomorphic. Moreover, we show a similar statement for compactly generated groups and Lie groups holds and apply our results to different concepts of group cohomology for finite-dimensional Lie groups.
We construct some new cohomology theories for topological groups and Lie groups and study some of its basic properties. For example, we introduce a cohomology theory based on measurable cochains which are continuous in a neighbourhood of identity. We show that if G and A are locally compact and second countable, then the second cohomology group based on locally continuous measurable cochains as above parametrizes the collection of locally split extensions of G by A.
The main result of this work is a new proof and generalization of Lazard's comparison theorem of locally analytic group cohomology with Lie algebra cohomology for K-Lie groups, where K is a finite extension of the p-adic numbers. We show the following theorem: Let K be a finite extension of the p-adic numbers and let G be a K-Lie group. Then there exists an open subgroup U of G such that the Lazard morphism, which is induced by differentiating cochains, is an isomorphism. The proof of this theorem is independent of the proof of Lazard's comparison result. Our strategy to prove the comparison i…
The aim of the paper is to give a full classification of factorizations of groups in terms of descent cohomology (pointed) sets introduced in [5]. We show that descent cohomology includes Serre's non-abelian group cohomology as a special case. This enables us to generalize Serre's theory further to include monoids.
