When nonconforming discontinuous Galerkin methods are implemented for hyperbolic equations using quadrature, exponential energy growth can result even when the underlying scheme with exact integration does not support such growth. Using linear elasticity as a model problem, we propose a skew-symmetric formulation that has the same energy stability properties for both exact and inexact quadrature-based integration. These stability properties are maintained even when the material properties are variable and discontinuous, and the elements are non-affine (e.g., curved). Additionally, we show how the nonconforming scheme can be made conservative and constant preserving with variable material properties and curved elements. The analytic stability, conservation, and constant preserving results are confirmed through numerical experiments demonstrating the stability as well as the accuracy of the method.
In this work we address the analysis of the stationary generalized Burgers-Huxley equation (a nonlinear elliptic problem with anomalous advection) and propose conforming, nonconforming and discontinuous Galerkin finite element methods for its numerical approximation. The existence, uniqueness and regularity of weak solutions is discussed in detail using a Faedo-Galerkin approach and fixed-point theory, and a priori error estimates for all three types of numerical schemes are rigorously derived. A set of computational results are presented to show the efficacy of the proposed methods.
An hp-version interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin (IPDG) method under nonconforming meshes is proposed to solve the quad-curl eigenvalue problem. We prove well-posedness of the numerical scheme for the quad-curl equation and then derive an error estimate in a mesh-dependent norm, which is optimal with respect to h but has different p-version error bounds under conforming and nonconforming tetrahedron meshes. The hp-version discrete compactness of the DG space is established for the convergence proof. The performance of the method is demonstrated by numerical experiments using conforming/no…
We present a survey of the nonconforming Trefftz virtual element method for the Laplace and Helmholtz equations. For the latter, we present a new abstract analysis, based on weaker assumptions on the stabilization, and numerical results on the dispersion analysis, including comparison with the plane wave discontinuous Galerkin method.
These lecture notes for a graduate course present an introduction to the mathematical theory of finite element methods for the numerical solution of partial differential equations. Covered are conforming and nonconforming (in particular, discontinuous Galerkin and mixed methods) for elliptic partial differential equations and Galerkin methods for parabolic equations.
This paper presents a new and unified approach to the derivation and analysis of many existing, as well as new discontinuous Galerkin methods for linear elasticity problems. The analysis is based on a unified discrete formulation for the linear elasticity problem consisting of four discretization variables: strong symmetric stress tensor $\dsig$ and displacement $\du$ inside each element, and the modifications of these two variables $\hsig$ and $\hu$ on elementary boundaries of elements. Motivated by many relevant methods in the literature, this formulation can be used to derive most existing …

When solving the Poisson equation by the finite element method, we use one degree of freedom for interpolation by the given Laplacian - the right hand side function in the partial differential equation. The finite element solution is the Galerkin projection in a smaller vector space. The idea is similar to that of interpolating the boundary condition in the standard finite element method. Due to the pointwise interpolation, our method yields a smaller system of equations and a better condition number. The number of unknowns on each element is reduced significantly from $(k^2+3k+2)/2$ to $3k$ f…
In this paper, we develop subspace correction preconditioners for discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretizations of elliptic problems with $hp$-refinement. These preconditioners are based on the decomposition of the DG finite element space into a conforming subspace, and a set of small nonconforming edge spaces. The conforming subspace is preconditioned using a matrix-free low-order refined technique, which in this work we extend to the $hp$-refinement context using a variational restriction approach. The condition number of the resulting linear system is independent of the granularity of the mes…
The popular (piecewise) quadratic schemes for the biharmonic equation based on triangles are the nonconforming Morley finite element, the discontinuous Galerkin, the $C^0$ interior penalty, and the WOPSIP schemes. Those methods are modified in their right-hand side $F\in H^{-2}(Ω)$ replaced by $F\circ (JI_{\rm M}) $ and then are quasi-optimal in their respective discrete norms. The smoother $JI_{\rm M}$ is defined for a piecewise smooth input function by a (generalized) Morley interpolation $I_{\rm M}$ followed by a companion operator $J$. An abstract framework for the error analysis in the en…
The Galerkin difference (GD) basis is a set of continuous, piecewise polynomials defined using a finite difference like grid of degrees of freedom. The one dimensional GD basis functions are naturally extended to multiple dimensions using the tensor product constructions to quadrilateral elements for discretizing partial differential equations. Here we propose two approaches to handling complex geometries using the GD basis within a discontinuous Galerkin finite element setting: (1) using non-conforming, curvilinear GD elements and (2) coupling affine GD elements with curvilinear simplicial el…

We introduce a hybrid method to couple continuous Galerkin finite element methods and high-order finite difference methods in a nonconforming multiblock fashion. The aim is to optimize computational efficiency when complex geometries are present. The proposed coupling technique requires minimal changes in the existing schemes while maintaining strict stability, accuracy, and energy conservation. Results are demonstrated on linear and nonlinear scalar conservation laws in two spatial dimensions.
We extend the applicability of the popular interior-penalty discontinuous Galerkin (dG) method discretizing advection-diffusion-reaction problems to meshes comprising extremely general, essentially arbitrarily-shaped element shapes. In particular, our analysis allows for \emph{curved} element shapes, without the use of non-linear elemental maps. The feasibility of the method relies on the definition of a suitable choice of the discontinuity penalization, which turns out to be explicitly dependent on the particular element shape, but essentially independent on small shape variations. This is ac…
We present a discontinuous Galerkin internal-penalty scheme that is applicable to a large class of linear and nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations. The unified scheme can accommodate all second-order elliptic equations that can be formulated in first-order flux form, encompassing problems in linear elasticity, general relativity, and hydrodynamics, including problems formulated on a curved manifold. It allows for a wide range of linear and nonlinear boundary conditions, and accommodates curved and nonconforming meshes. Our generalized internal-penalty numerical flux and our Schur-…

We present new stabilization terms for solving the linear transport equation on a cut cell mesh using the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method in two dimensions with piecewise linear polynomials. The goal is to allow for explicit time stepping schemes, despite the presence of cut cells. Using a method of lines approach, we start with a standard upwind DG discretization for the background mesh and add penalty terms that stabilize the solution on small cut cells in a conservative way. Then, one can use explicit time stepping, even on cut cells, with a time step length that is appropriate for the b…

In this paper we formulate and test numerically a fully-coupled discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method for incompressible two-phase flow with discontinuous capillary pressure. The spatial discretization uses the symmetric interior penalty DG formulation with weighted averages and is based on a wetting-phase potential / capillary potential formulation of the two-phase flow system. After discretizing in time with diagonally implicit Runge-Kutta schemes the resulting systems of nonlinear algebraic equations are solved with Newton's method and the arising systems of linear equations are solved efficie…

Positivity-Preserving and Entropy-Stable Oscillation-Eliminating DGSEM for the Compressible Euler Equations on Curvilinear Meshes with Adaptive Mesh Refinement
In this paper, we present an energy-preserving exponentially integrable numerical method for stochastic wave equation with cubic nonlinearity and additive noise. We first apply the spectral Galerkin method to discretizing the original equation and show that this spatial discretization possesses an energy evolution law and certain exponential integrability property. Then the exponential integrability property of the exact solution is deduced by proving the strong convergence of the semi-discretization. To propose a full discrete numerical method which could inherit both the energy evolution law…
In this manuscript we focus on the question: what is the correct notion of Stokes-Biot stability? Stokes-Biot stable discretizations have been introduced, independently by several authors, as a means of discretizing Biot's equations of poroelasticity; such schemes retain their stability and convergence properties, with respect to appropriately defined norms, in the context of a vanishing storage coefficient and a vanishing hydraulic conductivity. The basic premise of a Stokes-Biot stable discretization is: one part Stokes stability and one part mixed Darcy stability. In this manuscript we rema…
