We prove several new results concerning action minimizing periodic orbits of Tonelli Lagrangian systems on an oriented closed surface $M$. More specifically, we show that for every energy larger than the maximal energy of a constant orbit and smaller than or equal to the Mañé critical value of the universal abelian cover, the Lagrangian system admits a minimal boundary, i.e. a global minimizer of the Lagrangian action on the space of smooth boundaries of open sets of $M$. We also extend the celebrated graph theorem of Mather in this context: in the tangent bundle $TM$, the union of the supports of all lifted minimal boundaries with a given energy projects injectively to the base $M$. Finally, we prove the existence of action minimizing simple periodic orbits on energies just above the Mañé critical value of the universal abelian cover. This provides in particular a class of non-reversible Finsler metrics on the 2-sphere possessing infinitely many closed geodesics.
In this paper, we study a class of time-periodic stochastic Tonelli Lagrangians on compact manifolds. Precisely, we discuss the stochastic Mane Critical Value, prove the existence of stochastic Weak KAM solutions of the related Hamilton-Jacobi equation. Furthermore, we survey the global minimizer.
These notes were prepared in occasion of a mini-course given by the author at the "CIMPA Research School - Hamiltonian and Lagrangian Dynamics" (10-19 March 2015 - Salto, Uruguay). The talks were meant as an introduction to the problem of finding periodic orbits of prescribed energy for autonomous Tonelli Lagrangian systems on the twisted cotangent bundle of a closed manifold. In the first part of the lecture notes, we put together in a general theorem old and new results on the subject. In the second part, we focus on an important class of examples: magnetic flows on surfaces. For such system…
We prove that, on a closed surface, a Lagrangian system defined by a Tonelli Lagrangian $L$ possesses a periodic orbit that is a local minimizer of the free-period action functional on every energy level belonging to the low range of energies $(e_0(L),c_{\mathrm{u}}(L))$. We also prove that almost every energy level in $(e_0(L),c_{\mathrm{u}}(L))$ possesses infinitely many periodic orbits. These statements extend two results, respectively due to Taimanov and Abbondandolo-Macarini-Mazzucchelli-Paternain, valid for the special case of electromagnetic Lagrangians.
Multiplicity results for solutions of various boundary value problems are known for dynamical systems on compact configuration manifolds, given by Lagrangians or Hamiltonians which have quadratic growth in the velocities or in the momenta. Such results are based on the richness of the topology of the space of curves satisfying the given boundary conditions. In this note we show how these results can be extended to the classical setting of Tonelli Lagrangians (Lagrangians which are $C^2$-convex and superlinear in the velocities), or to Hamiltonians which are superlinear in the momenta and have …
We prove that for a generic Tonelli Lagrangian on a configuration space of dimension two, there exists an open dense subset of cohomology classes, whose Aubry set consists of exactly one hyperbolic periodic orbit.
We study Tonelli Lagrangian systems on the 2-torus in energy levels above Mañé's strict critical value and analyize the structure of global minimizers in the spirit of Morse, Hedlund and Bangert. In the case where the topological entropy of the Euler-Lagrange flow on the fixed energy level vanishes, we show that there are invariant tori for all rotation vectors indicating integrable-like behavior on a large scale. On the other hand, using a construction of Katok, we give examples of reversible Finsler geodesic flows with vanishing topological entropy, but having ergodic components of positive …
We study the periodic orbits problem on energy levels of Tonelli Lagrangian systems over configuration spaces of arbitrary dimension. We show that, when the fundamental group is finite and the Lagrangian has no stationary orbit at the Mañé critical energy level, there is a waist on every energy level just above the Mañé critical value. With a suitable perturbation with a potential, we show that there are infinitely many periodic orbits on every energy level just above the Mañé critical value, and on almost every energy level just below. Finally, we prove the Tonelli analogue of a closed geodes…
In this work we study the dynamical behavior Tonelli Lagrangian systems defined on the tangent bundle of the torus $\mathbb{T}^2=\mathbb{R}^2 / \mathbb{Z}^2$. We prove that the Lagrangian flow restricted to a high energy level $ E_L^{-1}(c)$ (i.e $ c> c_0(L)$) has positive topological entropy if the flow satisfies the Kupka-Smale propriety in $ E_L^{-1}(c)$ (i.e, all closed orbit with energy $c$ are hyperbolic or elliptic and all heteroclinic intersections are transverse on $E_L^{-1}(c)$). The proof requires the use of well-known results in Aubry-Mather's Theory.

We prove that all the Tonelli Hamiltonians defined on the cotangent bundle $T^*\T^n$ of the $n$-dimensional torus that have no conjugate points are $C^0$ integrable, i.e. $T^*\T^n$ is $C^0$ foliated by a family $\Fc$ of invariant $C^0$ Lagrangian graphs. Assuming that the Hamiltonian is $C^\infty$, we prove that there exists a $G_δ$ subset $\Gc$ of $\Fc$ such that the dynamics restricted to every element of $\Gc$ is strictly ergodic. Moreover, we prove that the Lyapunov exponents of every $C^0$ integrable Tonelli Hamiltonian are zero and deduce that the metric and topological entropies vanish.
Let $M$ be a closed and connected manifold, $H:T^*M\times \mathbb{R} / \mathbb{Z} \to \mathbb{R}$ a Tonelli $1$-periodic Hamiltonian and $\mathcal{L} \subset T^*M$ a Lagrangian submanifold Hamiltonianly isotopic to the zero section. We prove that if $\mathcal{L}$ is invariant by the time-one map of $H$, then $\mathcal{L}$ is a graph over $M$. An interesting consequence in the autonomous case is that in this case, $\mathcal{L}$ is invariant by all the time $t$ maps of the Hamiltonian flow of $H$.
If L is a Tonelli Lagrangian defined on the tangent bundle of a compact and connected manifold whose dimension is at least 2, we associate to L the tiered Aubry set and the tiered Mane set (defined in the article). We prove that the tiered Mane set is closed, connected, chain transitive and that if L is generic in the Mane sense, the tiered Mane set has no interior. Then, we give an example of such an explicit generic Tonelli Lagrangian function and an example proving that when M is the torus, the closure of the tiered Aubry set and the closure of the union of the K.A.M. tori may be different.
Let L be a D-dimensional submanifold of a 2D-dimensional exact symplectic manifold (M, w) and let f be a symplectic diffeomorphism onf M. In this article, we deal with the link between the dynamics of f restricted to L and the geometry of L (is L Lagrangian, is it smooth, is it a graph...?). We prove different kinds of results. - for D=3, we prove that if a torus that carries some characteristic loop, then either L is Lagrangian or the restricted dynamics g of f to L can not be minimal (i.e. all the orbits are dense) with (g^k) equilipschitz; - for a Tonelli Hamiltonian of the cotangent bundle…
We prove a Lagrangian analogue of the Conley conjecture: given a 1-periodic Tonelli Lagrangian with global flow on a closed configuration space, the associated Euler-Lagrange system has infinitely many periodic solutions. More precisely, we show that there exist infinitely many contractible integer periodic solutions with a priori bounded mean action and either infinitely many of them are 1-periodic or they have unbounded period.
For an integrable Tonelli Hamiltonian with $d\ (d\geq 2)$ degrees of freedom, we show that all of the Lagrangian tori can be destroyed by analytic perturbations which are arbitrarily small in the $C^{d-δ}$ topology.
These are introductory lecture notes on Mather's theory for Tonelli Lagrangian and Hamiltonian systems. They are based on a series of lectures given by the author at Università degli Studi di Napoli "Federico II" (April 2009), at University of Cambridge (academic year 2009-2010) and at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (June 2010).
We consider magnetic Tonelli Hamiltonian systems on the cotangent bundle of the 2-sphere, where the magnetic form is not necessarily exact. It is known that, on very low and on high energy levels, these systems may have only finitely many periodic orbits. Our main result asserts that almost all energy levels in a precisely characterized intermediate range $(e_0,e_1)$ possess infinitely many periodic orbits. Such a range of energies is non-empty, for instance, in the physically relevant case where the Tonelli Lagrangian is a kinetic energy and the magnetic form is oscillating (in which case, $e…
We prove that if a time-periodic Tonelli Lagrangian on a closed manifold $M$ satisfies a strong version of the Differentiability Problem for Mather's $β$-function, then the Legendre transforms of rational homology classes are dense in the first cohomology of $M$, which is a first step towards Mañé's conjecture.
We prove the differentiability of $β$ of Mather function on all homology classes corresponding to rotation vectors of measures whose supports are contained in a Lipschitz Lagrangian absorbing graph, invariant by Tonelli Hamiltonians. We also show the relationship between local differentiability of $β$ and local integrability of the Hamiltonian flow.
In this paper, we proved that for generic Tonelli Lagrangian, there always exists a residual set $\mathcal{G}\subset H^1(M,\mathbb{R})$ such that \[ \widetilde{\mathcal{M}}(c)=\widetilde{\mathcal{A}}(c)=\widetilde{\mathcal{N}}(c),\quad \forall c\in\mathcal{G} \] with $\widetilde{\mathcal{M}}(c)$ supports on a uniquely ergodic measure.
In this paper we compute all the smooth solutions to the Hamilton-Jacobi equation associated with the horocycle flow. This can be seen as the Euler-Lagrange flow (restricted to the energy level set $E^{-1}(\frac 12)$) defined by the Tonelli Lagrangian $L:T\mathbb H\rightarrow \mathbb R$ given by (hyperbolic) kinetic energy plus the standard magnetic potential. The method we use is to look at Lagrangian graphs that are contained in the level set $\{H=\frac 12\}$, where $H:T^*\mathbb H\rightarrow \mathbb R$ denotes the Hamiltonian dual to $L$.
We introduce a new critical value $c_\infty(L)$ for Tonelli Lagrangians $L$ on the tangent bundle of the 2-sphere without minimizing measures supported on a point. We show that $c_\infty(L)$ is strictly larger than the Mañé critical value $c(L)$, and on every energy level $e\in(c(L),c_\infty(L))$ there exist infinitely many periodic orbits of the Lagrangian system of $L$, one of which is a local minimizer of the free-period action functional. This has applications to Finsler metrics of Randers type on the 2-sphere. We show that, under a suitable criticality assumption on a given Randers metric…
Let H be a Tonelli Hamiltonian defined on the cotangent bundle of a compact and connected manifold and let u be a semi-concave function defined on M. If E (u) is the set of all the super-differentials of u and (ϕt) the Hamiltonian flow of H, we prove that for t > 0 small enough, ϕ-t (E (u)) is an exact Lagrangian Lipschitz graph. This provides a geometric interpretation/explanation of a regularization tool that was introduced by P.~Bernard to prove the existence of C 1,1 subsolutions.
We prove a perturbation theorem for the $k$-jets, $k\geq 2$, of the Poincaré map of a closed orbit of the Hamiltonian flow of a Tonelli Hamiltonian $H: T^*M\to \R$, on a closed manifold $M$. As a consequence we obtain Mañé generic properties of Hamiltonian and Lagrangian flows.
We study autonomous Tonelli Lagrangians on closed surfaces. We aim to clarify the relationship between the Aubry set and the Mather set, when the latter consists of periodic orbits which are not fixed points. Our main result says that in that case the Aubry set and the Mather set almost always coincide.
We study properties of action-minimizing invariant sets for Tonelli Lagrangian and Hamiltonian systems and weak KAM solutions to the Hamilton-Jacobi equation in terms of Mather's averaging functions. Our principal discovery is that exposed points and extreme points of Mather's alpha function are closely related to disjoint properties and graph properties of the action-minimizing invariant sets, which is also related to $C^0$ integrability of the systems and the existence of smooth weak KAM solutions to the Hamilton-Jacobi equation.
Let $(M,g)$ be a closed Riemannian manifold, $L: TM\rightarrow \mathbb R$ be a Tonelli Lagrangian. Given two closed submanifolds $Q_0$ and $Q_1$ of $M$ and a real number $k$, we study the existence of Euler-Lagrange orbits with energy $k$ connecting $Q_0$ to $Q_1$ and satisfying the conormal boundary conditions. We introduce the Mañé critical value which is relevant for this problem and discuss existence results for supercritical and subcritical energies. We also provide counterexamples showing that all the results are sharp.
Let $(M,g)$ be a closed Riemannian manifold and $L:TM\rightarrow \mathbb R$ be a Tonelli Lagrangian. In this thesis we study the existence of orbits of the Euler-Lagrange flow associated with $L$ satisfying suitable boundary conditions. We first look for orbits connecting two given closed submanifolds of $M$ satisfying the conormal boundary conditions: We introduce the Mañé critical value that is relevant for the problem and prove existence results for supercritical and subcritical energies; we also complement these with counterexamples, thus showing the sharpness of our results. We then move …
In Haller and Beron-Vera (2013) we developed a variational principle for the detection of coherent Lagrangian vortex boundaries. The solutions of this variational principle turn out to be closed null-geodesics of the Lorentzian metric associated with a generalized Green-Lagrange strain tensor family. This metric interpretation implies a mathematical analogy between coherent Lagrangian vortex boundaries and photon spheres in general relativity. Here we give an improved discussion on this analogy.
We introduce a simple variational principle for coherent material vortices in two-dimensional turbulence. Vortex boundaries are sought as closed stationary curves of the averaged Lagrangian strain. Solutions to this problem turn out to be mathematically equivalent to photon spheres around black holes in cosmology. The fluidic photon spheres satisfy explicit differential equations whose outermost limit cycles are optimal Lagrangian vortex boundaries. As an application, we uncover super-coherent material eddies in the South Atlantic, which yield specific Lagrangian transport estimates for Agulha…
Coherent boundaries of Lagrangian vortices in fluid flows have recently been identified as closed orbits of line fields associated with the Cauchy-Green strain tensor. Here we develop a fully automated procedure for the detection of such closed orbits in large-scale velocity data sets. We illustrate the power of our method on ocean surface velocities derived from satellite altimetry.
We derive an action-flux formula to compute the volumes of lobes quantifying transport between past- and future-invariant Lagrangian coherent structures of n-dimensional, transitory, globally Liouville flows. A transitory system is one that is nonautonomous only on a compact time interval. This method requires relatively little Lagrangian information about the codimension-one surfaces bounding the lobes, relying only on the generalized actions of loops on the lobe boundaries. These are easily computed since the vector fields are autonomous before and after the time-dependent transition. Two ex…
