The conventional theory of hydrodynamics describes the evolution in time of chaotic many-particle systems from local to global equilibrium. In a quantum integrable system, local equilibrium is characterized by a local generalized Gibbs ensemble or equivalently a local distribution of pseudo-momenta. We study time evolution from local equilibria in such models by solving a certain kinetic equation, the "Bethe-Boltzmann" equation satisfied by the local pseudo-momentum density. Explicit comparison with density matrix renormalization group time evolution of a thermal expansion in the XXZ model shows that hydrodynamical predictions from smooth initial conditions can be remarkably accurate, even for small system sizes. Solutions are also obtained in the Lieb-Liniger model for free expansion into vacuum and collisions between clouds of particles, which model experiments on ultracold one-dimensional Bose gases.
We address spin transport in the easy-axis Heisenberg spin chain subject to integrability-breaking perturbations. We find that spin transport is subdiffusive with dynamical exponent $z=4$ up to a timescale that is parametrically long in the anisotropy. In the limit of infinite anisotropy, transport is subdiffusive at all times; for large finite anisotropy, one eventually recovers diffusion at late times, but with a diffusion constant independent of the strength of the integrability breaking perturbation. We provide numerical evidence for these findings, and explain them by adapting the general…
We develop a formalism for computing the non-linear response of interacting integrable systems. Our results are asymptotically exact in the hydrodynamic limit where perturbing fields vary sufficiently slowly in space and time. We show that spatially resolved nonlinear response distinguishes interacting integrable systems from noninteracting ones, exemplifying this for the Lieb-Liniger gas. We give a prescription for computing finite-temperature Drude weights of arbitrary order, which is in excellent agreement with numerical evaluation of the third-order response of the XXZ spin chain. We ident…
We introduce and solvev a special family of integrable interacting vertex models that generalizes the well known six-vertex model. In addition to the usual nearest-neighbor interactions among the vertices, there exist extra hard-core interactions among pair of vertices at larger distances. The associated row-to-row transfer matrices are diagonalized by using the recently introduced matrix product {\it ansatz}. Similarly as the relation of the six-vertex model with the XXZ quantum chain, the row-to-row transfer matrices of these new models are also the generating functions of an infinite set of …
We study energy transport in the integrable $\mathbb Z_3$ parafermionic chain using the partitioning protocol. By exploiting the Bethe-ansatz solution for the thermodynamics of the system, we develop a generalized hydrodynamic description of the non-equilibrium steady states, which we benchmark using numerical simulations based on matrix product states. The model features a low-energy conformal limit with central charge $c=4/5$, which affects the low-temperature energy current, as we explicitly show. Moreover, we exploit that, for energies close to the maximally excited state, the system is al…
We study the nonequilibrium dynamics of random spin chains that remain integrable (i.e., solvable via Bethe ansatz): because of correlations in the disorder, these systems escape localization and feature ballistically spreading quasiparticles. We derive a generalized hydrodynamic theory for dynamics in such random integrable systems, including diffusive corrections due to disorder, and use it to study non-equilibrium energy and spin transport. We show that diffusive corrections to the ballistic propagation of quasiparticles can arise even in noninteracting settings, in sharp contrast with clea…
Understanding the general principles underlying strongly interacting quantum states out of equilibrium is one of the most important tasks of current theoretical physics. With experiments accessing the intricate dynamics of many-body quantum systems, it is paramount to develop powerful methods that encode the emergent physics. Up to now, the strong dichotomy observed between integrable and non-integrable evolutions made an overarching theory difficult to build, especially for transport phenomena where space-time profiles are drastically different. We present a novel framework for studying trans…
We address the hydrodynamics of operator spreading in interacting integrable lattice models. In these models, operators spread through the ballistic propagation of quasiparticles, with an operator front whose velocity is locally set by the fastest quasiparticle velocity. In interacting integrable systems, this velocity depends on the density of the other quasiparticles, so equilibrium density fluctuations cause the front to follow a biased random walk, and therefore to broaden diffusively. Ballistic front propagation and diffusive front broadening are also generically present in non-integrable…
In this paper we investigate an integrable loop model and its connection with a supersymmetric spin chain. The Bethe Ansatz solution allows us to study some properties of the ground state. When the loop fugacity $q$ lies in the physical regime, we conjecture that the central charge is $c=q-1$ for $q$ integer $< 2$. Low-lying excitations are examined, supporting a superdiffusive behavior for $q=1$. We argue that these systems are interesting examples of integrable lattice models realizing $c \leq 0$ conformal field theories.
We solve the non-stationary Schrodinger equation for several time-dependent Hamiltonians, such as the BCS Hamiltonian with an interaction strength inversely proportional to time, periodically driven BCS and linearly driven inhomogeneous Dicke models as well as various multi-level Landau-Zener tunneling models. The latter are Demkov-Osherov, bow-tie, and generalized bow-tie models. We show that these Landau-Zener problems and their certain interacting many-body generalizations map to Gaudin magnets in a magnetic field. Moreover, we demonstrate that the time-dependent Schrodinger equation for th…
We investigate the dynamics of bipartite entanglement after the sudden junction of two leads in interacting integrable models. By combining the quasiparticle picture for the entanglement spreading with Generalised Hydrodynamics we derive an analytical prediction for the dynamics of the entanglement entropy between a finite subsystem and the rest. We find that the entanglement rate between the two leads depends only on the physics at the interface and differs from the rate of exchange of thermodynamic entropy. This contrasts with the behaviour in free or homogeneous interacting integrable syste…
We present an open-source Matlab framework, titled iFluid, for simulating the dynamics of integrable models using the theory of generalized hydrodynamics (GHD). The framework provides an intuitive interface, enabling users to define and solve problems in a few lines of code. Moreover, iFluid can be extended to encompass any integrable model, and the algorithms for solving the GHD equations can be fully customized. We demonstrate how to use iFluid by solving the dynamics of three distinct systems: (i) The quantum Newton's cradle of the Lieb-Liniger model, (ii) a gradual field release in the XXZ…
Quantum quenches in continuum field theory across critical points are known to display different scaling behaviours in different regimes of the quench rate. We extend these results to integrable lattice models such as the transverse field Ising model on a one-dimensional chain and the Kitaev model on a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice using a nonlinear quench protocol which allows for exact analytical solutions of the dynamics. Our quench protocol starts with a finite mass gap at early times and crosses a critical point or a critical region, and we study the behaviour of one point functions o…
We present an analytical method to solve Dyson's hierarchical model, involving the scaling variables near the high-temperature fixed point. The procedure seems plagued by the presence of small denominators as in perturbative expansions near integrable systems in Hamiltonian mechanics. However, in all cases considered, a zero denominator always comes with a zero numerator. We conjecture that these cancellations occur in general, suggesting that the model has remarkable features reminiscent of the integrable systems.
A new algebraic Bethe ansatz scheme is proposed to diagonalise classes of integrable models relevant to the description of Bose-Einstein condensates in dilute alkali gases. This is achieved by introducing the notion of Z-graded representations of the Yang-Baxter algebra.
We show that hydrodynamic diffusion is generically present in many-body interacting integrable models. We extend the recently developed generalised hydrodynamic (GHD) to include terms of Navier-Stokes type which lead to positive entropy production and diffusive relaxation mechanisms. These terms provide the subleading diffusive corrections to Euler-scale GHD for the large-scale non-equilibrium dynamics of integrable systems, and arise due to two-body scatterings among quasiparticles. We give exact expressions for the diffusion coefficients. Our results apply to a large class of integrable mode…
Our review covers microscopic foundations of generalized hydrodynamics (GHD). As one generic approach we develop form factor expansions, for ground states and generalized Gibbs ensembles (GGE). In the latter case the so obtained results are compared with predictions from GHD. One cornerstone of GHD are the GGE averaged microscopic currents, which can also be obtained through employing form factors. Discussed is a second, completely orthogonal approach based on the availability of a self-conserved current.
Recently, a hydrodynamic description of local equilibrium dynamics in quantum integrable systems was discovered. In the diffusionless limit, this is equivalent to a certain "Bethe-Boltzmann" kinetic equation, which has the form of an integro-differential conservation law in $(1+1)$D. The purpose of the present work is to investigate the sense in which the Bethe-Boltzmann equation defines an "integrable kinetic equation". To this end, we study a class of $N$ dimensional systems of evolution equations that arise naturally as finite-dimensional approximations to the Bethe-Boltzmann equation. We o…
We review the recent advances on exact results for dynamical correlation functions at large scales and related transport coefficients in interacting integrable models. We discuss Drude weights, conductivity and diffusion constants, as well as linear and nonlinear response on top of equilibrium and non-equilibrium states. We consider the problems from the complementary perspectives of the general hydrodynamic theory of many-body systems, including hydrodynamic projections, and form-factor expansions in integrable models, and show how they provide a comprehensive and consistent set of exact meth…
For reaction-diffusion processes without exclusion, in which the particles can exist in the same site of a one-dimensional lattice, we study all the integrable models which can be obtained by imposing a boundary condition on the master equation of the asymmetric diffusion process. The annihilation process is also added. The Bethe ansatz solution and the exact N-particle conditional probabilities are obtained.
We derive an exact formula for the scaled cumulant generating function of the time-integrated current associated to an arbitrary ballistically transported conserved charge. Our results rely on the Euler-scale description of interacting, many-body, integrable models out of equilibrium given by the generalized hydrodynamics, and on the large deviation theory. Crucially, our findings extend previous studies by accounting for inhomogeneous and dynamical initial states in interacting systems. We present exact expressions for the first three cumulants of the time-integrated current. Considering the …
The entangling power and operator entanglement entropy are state independent measures of entanglement. Their growth and saturation is examined in the time-evolution operator of quantum many-body systems that can range from the integrable to the fully chaotic. An analytically solvable integrable model of the kicked transverse field Ising chain is shown to have ballistic growth of operator von Neumann entanglement entropy and exponentially fast saturation of the linear entropy with time. Surprisingly a fully chaotic model with longitudinal fields turned on shares the same growth phase, and is co…
We describe the crossover from generalized hydrodynamics to conventional hydrodynamics in nearly integrable systems. Integrable systems have infinitely many conserved quantities, which spread ballistically in general. When integrability is broken, only a few of these conserved quantities survive. The remaining conserved quantities are generically transported diffusively; we derive a compact and general diffusion equation for these. The diffusion constant depends on the matrix elements of the integrability-breaking perturbation; for a certain class of integrability-breaking perturbations, inclu…
We find families of integrable n-leg spin-1/2 ladders and tubes with general isotropic exchange interactions between spins. These models are equivalent to su(N) spin chains with N=2^n. Arbitrary rung interactions in the spin tubes and ladders induce chemical potentials in the equivalent spin chains. The potentials are n-dependent and differ for the tube and ladder models. The models are solvable by means of nested Bethe Ansatz.
We investigate the steady-state Rényi entanglement entropies after a quench from a piecewise homogeneous initial state in integrable models. In the quench protocol two macroscopically different chains (leads) are joined together at the initial time, and the subsequent dynamics is studied. We study the entropies of a finite subsystem at the interface between the two leads. The density of Rényi entropies coincides with that of the entropies of the Generalized Gibbs Ensemble (GGE) that describes the interface between the chains. By combining the Generalized Hydrodynamics (GHD) treatment of the qu…
Using generalized hydrodynamics (GHD), we develop the Euler hydrodynamics of classical integrable field theory. Classical field GHD is based on a known formalism for Gibbs ensembles of classical fields, that resembles the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz of quantum models, which we extend to generalized Gibbs ensembles (GGEs). In general, GHD must take into account both solitonic and radiative modes of classical fields. We observe that the quasi-particle formulation of GHD remains valid for radiative modes, even though these do not display particle-like properties in their precise dynamics. We point…
Dynamical equations in generalized hydrodynamics (GHD), a hydrodynamic theory for integrable quantum systems at the Euler scale, take a rather simple form, even though an infinite number of conserved charges are taken into account. We show a remarkable quantum-classical equivalence: we demonstrate the equivalence between the equations of GHD, and the Euler-scale hydrodynamic equations of a new family of classical gases which generalize the gas of hard rods. In this family, the "quasi-particles", upon colliding, jump forward or backward by a distance that depends on their velocities, generalizi…
We revisit the so-called folded XXZ model, which was treated earlier by two independent research groups. We argue that this spin-1/2 chain is one of the simplest quantum integrable models, yet it has quite remarkable physical properties. The particles have constant scattering lengths, which leads to a simple treatment of the exact spectrum and the dynamics of the system. The Hilbert space of the model is fragmented, leading to exponentially large degeneracies in the spectrum, such that the exponent depends on the particle content of a given state. We provide an alternative derivation of the Ha…

We study the asymptotic diffusion processes with (generally nonlocal) open boundaries in one dimension which are exactly solvable by means of the recently developed recursion formula. We investigate the stationary states, which cannot be determined in an elementary way. We give the equation which includes an auxiliary parameter and determines possible boundary conditions for the model to be solved exactly. With the help of that equation, we analyze the density current and concentration. We classify the phases according to them.
In this paper we construct a three-dimensional (3D) solvable lattice model with non-negative Boltzmann weights. The spin variables in the model are assigned to edges of the 3D cubic lattice and run over an infinite number of discrete states. The Boltzmann weights satisfy the tetrahedron equation, which is a 3D generalisation of the Yang-Baxter equation. The weights depend on a free parameter 0<q<1 and three continuous field variables. The layer-to-layer transfer matrices of the model form a two-parameter commutative family. This is the first example of a solvable 3D lattice model with non-nega…
Quantum liquids in two dimensions represent interesting dynamical quantum systems for several reasons, among them the possibility of the existence of infinite hidden symmetries, such as conformal symmetry or the symmetry associated with area preserving diffeo-morphisms. It is known that when the symmetry algebra is large enough, symmetry may fully prescribe the dynamics. However, the way this is borne out in two dimensional hydrodynamics, both classical and quantum, is not fully understood. Here we take a step in clarifying this issue, by focusing on a particular example, namely that of a two …
We study Euler scale hydrodynamics of massless integrable quantum field theories interpolating between two non-trivial renormalisation group fixed points after inhomogeneous quantum quenches. Using a partitioning protocol with left and right initial thermal states and the recently developed framework of generalised hydrodynamics, we focus on current and density profiles for the energy and momentum as a function of ξ= x=t, where both x and t are sent to infinity. Studying the first few members of the An and Dn massless flows we carry out a systematic treatment of these series and generalise our…

We consider quantum integrable models solvable by the nested algebraic Bethe ansatz and possessing $\mathfrak{gl}_3$-invariant $R$-matrix. We study a new recently proposed approach to construct on-shell Bethe vectors of these models. We prove that the vectors constructed by this method are semi-on-shell Bethe vectors for arbitrary values of Bethe parameters. They thus do become on-shell vectors provided the system of Bethe equations is fulfilled.
We develop a new method for the construction of one-dimensional integrable Lindblad systems, which describe quantum many body models in contact with a Markovian environment. We find several new models with interesting features, such as annihilation-diffusion processes, a mixture of coherent and classical particle propagation, and a rectified steady state current. We also find new ways to represent known classical integrable stochastic equations by integrable Lindblad operators. Our method can be extended to various other situations and it establishes a structured approach to the study of solva…
These are lecture notes for a series of lectures given at the Les Houches Summer School on Integrability in Atomic and Condensed Matter Physics, 30 July to 24 August 2018. The same series of lectures has also been given at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, October 2019. I overview in a pedagogical fashion the main aspects of the theory of generalised hydrodynamics, a hydrodynamic theory for quantum and classical many-body integrable systems. Only very basic knowledge of hydrodynamics and integrable systems is assumed.
Applying braided Yang-Baxter equation quantum integrable and Bethe ansatz solvable 1D anyonic lattice and field models are constructed. Along with known models we discover novel lattice anyonic and $q$-anyonic models as well as nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) and the derivative NLS quantum field models involving anyonic operators, $N$-particle sectors of which yield the well known anyon gases, interacting through $δ$ and derivative $δ$-function potentials.
