We derive an exact formula for the scaled cumulant generating function of the time-integrated current associated to an arbitrary ballistically transported conserved charge. Our results rely on the Euler-scale description of interacting, many-body, integrable models out of equilibrium given by the generalized hydrodynamics, and on the large deviation theory. Crucially, our findings extend previous studies by accounting for inhomogeneous and dynamical initial states in interacting systems. We present exact expressions for the first three cumulants of the time-integrated current. Considering the non-interacting limit of our general expression for the scaled cumulant generating function, we further show that for the partitioning protocol initial state our result coincides with previous results of the literature. Given the universality of the generalized hydrodynamics, the expression obtained for the scaled cumulant generating function is applicable to any interacting integrable model obeying the hydrodynamic equations, both classical and quantum.
We show that any interacting integrable model possesses a class of initial states for which the leading corrections to ballistic transport are subdiffusive rather than diffusive. These initial states are natural to realize experimentally and include the domain wall initial condition that has been the object of much recent scrutiny. Upon performing numerical matrix product state simulations in the spin-$1/2$ XXZ chain, we find that such states can exhibit subdiffusive $t^{1/3}$ scaling of fronts of spin, energy and entanglement entropy across the entire range of anisotropies. This demonstrates …
We devise an iterative scheme for numerically calculating dynamical two-point correlation functions in integrable many-body systems, in the Eulerian scaling limit. Expressions for these were originally derived in Ref. [1] by combining the fluctuation-dissipation principle with generalized hydrodynamics. Crucially, the scheme is able to address non-stationary, inhomogeneous situations, when motion occurs at the Euler-scale of hydrodynamics. In such situations, in interacting systems, the simple correlations due to fluid modes propagating with the flow receive subtle corrections, which we test. …
The distinction between interacting and noninteracting integrable systems is proposed to be characterized by the Onsager matrix. It being zero is the defining property of a noninteracting integrable system. To support our view we discuss various classical and quantum integrable chains.
Numerically, we study the time fluctuations of few-body observables after relaxation in isolated dynamical quantum systems of interacting particles. Our results suggest that they decay exponentially with system size in both regimes, integrable and chaotic. The integrable systems considered are solvable with the Bethe ansatz and have a highly nondegenerate spectrum. This is in contrast with integrable Hamiltonians mappable to noninteracting ones. We show that the coefficient of the exponential decay depends on the level of delocalization of the initial state with respect to the energy shell.
We develop a formalism for computing the non-linear response of interacting integrable systems. Our results are asymptotically exact in the hydrodynamic limit where perturbing fields vary sufficiently slowly in space and time. We show that spatially resolved nonlinear response distinguishes interacting integrable systems from noninteracting ones, exemplifying this for the Lieb-Liniger gas. We give a prescription for computing finite-temperature Drude weights of arbitrary order, which is in excellent agreement with numerical evaluation of the third-order response of the XXZ spin chain. We ident…
We address the hydrodynamics of operator spreading in interacting integrable lattice models. In these models, operators spread through the ballistic propagation of quasiparticles, with an operator front whose velocity is locally set by the fastest quasiparticle velocity. In interacting integrable systems, this velocity depends on the density of the other quasiparticles, so equilibrium density fluctuations cause the front to follow a biased random walk, and therefore to broaden diffusively. Ballistic front propagation and diffusive front broadening are also generically present in non-integrable…
We consider the exact solution of a model of correlated particles, which is presented as a system of interacting XX and Fateev-Zamolodchikov chains. This model can also be considered as a generalization of the multiband anisotropic $t-J$ model in the case we restrict the site occupations to at most two electrons. The exact solution is obtained for the eigenvalues and eigenvectors using the Bethe-ansatz method.

We argue that a particle language provides a conceptually simple framework for the description of anomalous equilibration in isolated quantum systems. We address this paradigm in the context of integrable models, which are those with particles that are stable against decay. In particular, we demonstrate that a complete description of equilibrium ensembles for interacting integrable models requires a formulation built from the mode occupation numbers of the underlying particle content, mirroring the case of non-interacting particles. This yields an intuitive physical interpretation of generaliz…
We investigate the dynamics of bipartite entanglement after the sudden junction of two leads in interacting integrable models. By combining the quasiparticle picture for the entanglement spreading with Generalised Hydrodynamics we derive an analytical prediction for the dynamics of the entanglement entropy between a finite subsystem and the rest. We find that the entanglement rate between the two leads depends only on the physics at the interface and differs from the rate of exchange of thermodynamic entropy. This contrasts with the behaviour in free or homogeneous interacting integrable syste…
We construct an interacting integrable Floquet model featuring quasiparticle excitations with topologically nontrivial chiral dispersion. This model is a fully quantum generalization of an integrable classical cellular automaton. We write down and solve the Bethe equations for the generalized quantum model, and show that these take on a particularly simple form that allows for an exact solution: essentially, the quasiparticles behave like interacting hard rods. The generalized thermodynamics and hydrodynamics of this model follow directly. Although the model is interacting, its unusually simpl…
The Bethe roots describing the ground state energy of the integrable 1D model of interacting bosons with weakly repulsive two-body delta interactions are seen to satisfy the set of Richardson equations appearing in the strong coupling limit of an integrable BCS pairing model. The BCS model describes boson-boson interactions with zero centre of mass momentum of pairs. It follows that the Bethe roots of the weakly interacting boson model are given by the zeros of Laguerre polynomials. The ground state energy and the lowest excitation are obtained explicitly via the Bethe roots. A direct link has…
In a many-body quantum system, local operators in Heisenberg picture $O(t) = e^{i H t} O e^{-i H t}$ spread as time increases. Recent studies have attempted to find features of that spreading which could distinguish between chaotic and integrable dynamics. The operator entanglement - the entanglement entropy in operator space - is a natural candidate to provide such a distinction. Indeed, while it is believed that the operator entanglement grows linearly with time $t$ in chaotic systems, numerics suggests that it grows only logarithmically in integrable systems. That logarithmic growth has alr…
We analyze a simple model of quantum dynamics, which is a discrete-time deterministic version of the Frederickson-Andersen model. We argue that this model is integrable, with a quasiparticle description related to the classical hard-rod gas. Despite the integrability of the model, commutators of physical operators grow as in generic chaotic models, with a diffusively broadening front, and local operators obey the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH). However, large subsystems violate ETH; as a function of subsystem size, eigenstate entanglement first increases linearly and then saturates…
Using the theory of generalized hydrodynamics (GHD), we derive exact Euler-scale dynamical two-point correlation functions of conserved densities and currents in inhomogeneous, non-stationary states of many-body integrable systems with weak space-time variations. This extends previous works to inhomogeneous and non-stationary situations. Using GHD projection operators, we further derive formulae for Euler-scale two-point functions of arbitrary local fields, purely from the data of their homogeneous one-point functions. These are new also in homogeneous generalized Gibbs ensembles. The techniqu…
We study the off-diagonal matrix elements of observables that break the translational symmetry of a spin-chain Hamiltonian, and as such connect energy eigenstates from different total quasimomentum sectors. We consider quantum-chaotic and interacting integrable points of the Hamiltonian, and focus on average energies at the center of the spectrum. In the quantum-chaotic model, we find that there is eigenstate thermalization; specifically, the matrix elements are Gaussian distributed with a variance that is a smooth function of $ω=E_α-E_β$ ({$E_α$} are the eigenenergies) and scales as $1/D$ ($D…
We study a generic one-dimensonal quantum model of two flavors (pseudospins) chiral complex fermions by exact diagonalization, which can have local interflavor interaction and superconducting pairings (with all irrelevant terms ignored). Analytically, the model has two solvable (integrable) points in the parameter space: it is a free fermion model when the fermion interaction is zero, and is a free boson Luttinger liquid when there is a global U(1)$^{(\uparrow)}\times$U(1)$^{(\downarrow)}$ symmetry (with nonzero interaction). When the global symmetry of the interacting model is lowered by turn…
We propose a method to study the transition to chaos in isolated quantum systems of interacting particles. It is based on the concept of delocalization of eigenstates in the energy shell, controlled by the Gaussian form of the strength function. We show that although the fluctuations of energy levels in integrable and non-integrable systems are principally different, global properties of the eigenstates may be quite similar, provided the interaction between particles exceeds some critical value. In this case the quench dynamics can be described analytically, demonstrating the universal statist…
Many experimentally relevant quantum spin chains are approximately integrable, and support long-lived quasiparticle excitations. A canonical example of integrable model of quantum magnetism is the XXZ spin chain, for which energy spreads ballistically, but, surprisingly, high-temperature spin transport can be diffusive or superdiffusive. We review the transport properties of this model using an intuitive quasiparticle picture that relies on the recently introduced framework of generalized hydrodynamics. We discuss how anomalous linear response properties emerge from hierarchies of quasiparticl…
We present new integrable models of interacting spin-1/2 chains, which can be interpreted as hard rod deformations of the XXZ Heisenberg chains. The models support multiple particle types: dynamical hard rods of length $\ell$ and particles with lengths $\ell'<\ell$ that are immobile except for the interaction with the hard rods. We encounter a remarkable phenomenon in these interacting models: exact spectral degeneracies across different deformations and volumes. The algebraic integrability of these systems is also treated using a recently developed formalism for medium range integrable spin c…
A unified integrable system, generating a new series of interacting matter-radiation models with interatomic coupling and different atomic frequencies, is constructed and exactly solved through algebraic Bethe ansatz. Novel features in Rabi oscillation and vacuum Rabi splitting are shown on the example of an integrable two-atom Buck-Sukumar model with resolution of some important controversies in the Bethe ansatz solution including its possible degeneracy for such models.
We study the bipartite von Neumann entanglement entropy and matrix elements of local operators in the eigenstates of an interacting integrable Hamiltonian (the paradigmatic spin-1/2 XXZ chain), and we contrast their behavior with that of quantum chaotic systems. We find that the leading term of the average (over all eigenstates in the zero magnetization sector) eigenstate entanglement entropy has a volume-law coefficient that is smaller than the universal (maximal entanglement) one in quantum chaotic systems. This establishes the entanglement entropy as a powerful measure to distinguish integr…
Rényi entropies are conceptually valuable and experimentally relevant generalisations of the celebrated von Neumann entanglement entropy. After a quantum quench in a clean quantum many-body system they generically display a universal linear growth in time followed by saturation. While a finite subsystem is essentially at local equilibrium when the entanglement saturates, it is genuinely out-of-equilibrium in the growth phase. In particular, the slope of the growth carries vital information on the nature of the system's dynamics, and its characterisation is a key objective of current research. …
We study the onset of chaos and statistical relaxation in two isolated dynamical quantum systems of interacting spins-1/2, one of which is integrable and the other chaotic. Our approach to identifying the emergence of chaos is based on the level of delocalization of the eigenstates with respect to the energy shell, the latter being determined by the interaction strength between particles or quasi-particles. We also discuss how the onset of chaos may be anticipated by a careful analysis of the Hamiltonian matrices, even before diagonalization. We find that despite differences between the two mo…
Interacting matter-radiation models close to physical systems are proposed, which without rotating wave approximation and with matter-matter interactions are Bethe ansatz solvable. This integrable system is constructed from the elliptic Gaudin model at high spin limit, where radiative excitation can be included perturbatively.
Using generalized hydrodynamics (GHD), we develop the Euler hydrodynamics of classical integrable field theory. Classical field GHD is based on a known formalism for Gibbs ensembles of classical fields, that resembles the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz of quantum models, which we extend to generalized Gibbs ensembles (GGEs). In general, GHD must take into account both solitonic and radiative modes of classical fields. We observe that the quasi-particle formulation of GHD remains valid for radiative modes, even though these do not display particle-like properties in their precise dynamics. We point…
The eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) is a conjecture on the nature of isolated quantum systems that guarantees the thermal behavior of subsystems when it is satisfied. ETH has been tested in various forms on a number of local many-body interacting systems. Here we examine the validity of ETH in a class of nonlocal disordered many-body interacting systems --- the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev Majorana (SYK) models --- that may be tuned from chaotic behavior to integrability. Our analysis shows that SYK$_4$ (with quartic couplings), which is maximally chaotic in the large system size limit, satisf…
We describe a formulation for studying the quench dynamics of integrable systems generalizing an approach by Yudson. We study the evolution of the Lieb-Liniger model, a gas of interacting bosons moving on the continuous infinite line and interacting via a short range potential. The formalism allows us to quench the system from any initial state. We find that for any value of repulsive coupling independently of the initial state the system asymptotes towards a strongly repulsive gas, while for any value of attractive coupling, the system forms a maximal bound state that dominates at longer time…
We develop an exact solution to the problem of one dimensional chiral bosons interacting via an s-wave Feshbach resonance. This problem is integrable, being the quantum analog of a classical two-wave model solved by the inverse scattering method thirty years ago. Its solution describes one or two branches of dressed chiral right moving molecules depending on the chemical potential (particle density). We also briefly discuss the possibility of experimental realization of such a system.
Within the generalized hydrodynamics (GHD) formalism for quantum integrable models, it is possible to compute simple expressions for a number of correlation functions at the Eulerian scale. Specializing to integrable relativistic field theories, we show the same correlators can be computed as a sum over form factors, the GHD regime corresponding to the leading contribution with one particle-hole pair on a finite energy-density background. The thermodynamic bootstrap program (TBP) formalism was recently introduced as an axiomatic approach to computing such finite-energy-density form factors for…
Operator spreading under unitary time evolution has attracted a lot of attention recently, as a way to probe many-body quantum chaos. While quantities such as out-of-time-ordered correlators (OTOC) do distinguish interacting from non-interacting systems, it has remained unclear to what extent they can truly diagnose chaotic {\it vs} integrable dynamics in many-body quantum systems. Here, we analyze operator spreading in generic 1D many-body quantum systems using a combination of matrix product operator (MPO) and analytical techniques, focusing on the operator {\em right-weight}. First, we show…
Understanding the general principles underlying strongly interacting quantum states out of equilibrium is one of the most important tasks of current theoretical physics. With experiments accessing the intricate dynamics of many-body quantum systems, it is paramount to develop powerful methods that encode the emergent physics. Up to now, the strong dichotomy observed between integrable and non-integrable evolutions made an overarching theory difficult to build, especially for transport phenomena where space-time profiles are drastically different. We present a novel framework for studying trans…
Integrable quantum field models are known to exist mostly in one space-dimension. Exploiting the concept of multi-time in integrable systems and a Lax matrix of higher scaling order, we construct a novel quantum field model in quasi-two dimensions involving interacting fields. The Yang-Baxter integrability is proved for the model by finding a new kind of commutation rule for its basic fields, representing nonstandard scalar fields along the transverse direction. In spite of a close link with the quantum Landau-Lifshitz equation, the present model differs widely from it, in its content and the …
In the last few years, the methods of constructive Fermionic Renormalization Group have been successfully applied to the study of the scaling limit of several two-dimensional statistical mechanics models at the critical point, including: weakly non-integrable 2D Ising models, Ashkin-Teller, 8-Vertex, and close-packed interacting dimer models. In this note, we will focus on the illustrative example of the interacting dimer model and review some of the universality results derived in this context. In particular, we will discuss the massless Gaussian free field (GFF) behavior of the height fluctu…
The time evolution of the entanglement entropy in non-equilibrium quantum systems provides crucial information about the structure of the time-dependent state. For quantum quench protocols, by combining a quasiparticle picture for the entanglement spreading with the exact knowledge of the stationary state provided by Bethe ansatz, it is possible to obtain an exact and analytic description of the evolution of the entanglement entropy. Here we discuss the application of these ideas to several integrable models. First we show that for non-interacting systems, both bosonic and fermionic, the exact…
