Causal Dynamical Triangulations (CDT) is a lattice approach to quantum gravity. CDT has rich phase structure, including a semiclassical phase consistent with Einstein's general relativity. Some of the observed phase transitions are second (or higher) order which opens a possibility of investigating the ultraviolet continuum limit. Recently a new phase with intriguing geometric properties has been discovered and the new phase transition is also second (or higher) order.
We study the Causal Dynamical Triangulation (CDT) with extended interactions in 1+1 dimensions applying the method in the non-critical string field theory (SFT) constructed by Ishibashi and Kawai. For this model, we solve Schwinger-Dyson's equation (SDE) for disk amplitude perturbatively, and find a matrix model in the continuum limit reproducing the SDE in the non-critical SFT approach as the loop equation.
We formulate the string field theory in zero-dimensional target space corresponding to the two-dimensional quantum gravity theory defined through Causal Dynamical Triangulations. This third quantization of the quantum gravity theory allows us in principle to calculate the transition amplitudes of processes in which the topology of space changes in time, and to include non-trivial topologies of space-time. We formulate the corresponding Dyson-Schwinger equations and illustrate how they can be solved iteratively.
We extend the 2 dimensional Causal Dynamical Triangulation (CDT) model from the usual model of closed string to the one of open-closed string. The matrix-vector model describing the loop gas model is modified so as to possess the nature of the CDT, i.e. the time foliation structure. Stochastic quantization method produces interactions of loop and line variables similar to those in the non-critical open-closed string field theories. By taking an appropriate scaling, we realize an extended model of the generalized CDT (GCDT), which keeps the causality in a broad sense.
We construct a 2-dimensional Causal Dynamical Triangulation (CDT) model from a matrix model which represents the loop gas model of closed string. The target-space index is reinterpreted as time or geodesic distance. We apply stochastic quantization method to the model to obtain the Generalized CDT (GCDT), which has additional interaction of creating baby universe. If we take a specific scaling in continuum limit, we realize an extended GCDT model characterized by the non-critical string field theory.
The structure of simplicial manifolds in a model of Causal Dynamical Triangulations in 3+1 dimensions with the spatial topology of a 3-torus is analyzed with the help of topological observables, such as loops with nonzero winding numbers and coordinates based on scalar fields with jumps at the boundaries of the elementary cell of the torus. The results are given an interpretation and used in the measurements of a more local observable that is the quantum Ricci curvature. We moreover analyze the influence of scalar matter fields on the geometry of CDT spacetimes.
The original models of causal dynamical triangulations construct space-time by arranging a set of simplices in layers separated by a fixed time-like distance. The importance of the foliation structure in the 2+1 dimensional model is studied by considering variations in which this property is relaxed. It turns out that the fixed-lapse condition can be equivalently replaced by a set of global constraints that have geometrical interpretation. We analyze the universal properties of a new two-dimensional quantum gravity model defined in terms of Locally Causal Dynamical Triangulations (LCDT). Measuring the Hausdorff and spectral dimensions of the dynamical geometrical ensemble, we find numerical evidence that the continuum limit of the model lies in a new universality class of two-dimensional quantum gravity theories, inequivalent to both Euclidean and Causal Dynamical Triangulations.
The Causal Dynamical Triangulation model of quantum gravity (CDT) is a proposition to evaluate the path integral over space-time geometries using a lattice regularization with a discrete proper time and geometries realized as simplicial manifolds. We relax the definition of the Ambjorn-Loll causal dynamical triangulation model in 1+1 dimensions to allow for a varying lapse. We show that, as long as the spatially averaged lapse is constant in time, the physical observables are unchanged in the continuum limit. This supports the claim that the time slicing of the model is the result of a gauge fixing, rather than a physical preferred time slicing.
We introduce an ensemble of infinite causal triangulations, called the uniform infinite causal triangulation, and show that it is equivalent to an ensemble of infinite trees, the uniform infinite planar tree. It is proved that in both cases the Hausdorff dimension almost surely equals 2. The infinite causal triangulations are shown to be almost surely recurrent or, equivalently, their spectral dimension is almost surely less than or equal to 2. The formalism of Causal Dynamical Triangulations (CDT) attempts to provide a non-perturbative regularization of quantum gravity, viewed as an ordinary quantum field theory. In two dimensions one can solve the lattice theory analytically and the continuum limit is universal, not depending on the details of the lattice regularization.
We explore the ultraviolet continuum regime of causal dynamical triangulations, as probed by the flow of the spectral dimension. We set up a framework in which one can find continuum theories that can in principle fully reproduce the behaviour of the latter in this regime. In particular, we show that, in 2+1 dimensions, Hovrava-Lifshitz gravity can mimic the flow of the spectral dimension in causal dynamical triangulations to high accuracy and over a wide range of scales. This seems to provide evidence for an important connection between the two theories.
The four dimensional Causal Dynamical Triangulations (CDT) approach to quantum gravity is already more than ten years old theory with numerous unprecedented predictions such as non-trivial phase structure of gravitational field and dimensional running. Here, we discuss possible empirical consequences of CDT derived based on the two features of the approach mentioned above. A possibility of using both astrophysical and cosmological observations to test CDT is discussed. We show that scenarios which can be ruled out at the empirical level exist.
Detailed applications of minisuperspace methods are presented and compared with results obtained in recent years by means of causal dynamical triangulations (CDTs), mainly in the form of effective actions. The analysis sheds light on conceptual questions such as the treatment of time or the role and scaling behavior of statistical and quantum fluctuations. Causal Dynamical Triangulations is a background independent approach to quantum gravity. We show that there exists an effective transfer matrix labeled by the scale factor which properly describes the evolution of the quantum universe. In this framework no degrees of freedom are frozen, but, the obtained effective action agrees with the minisuperspace model.

We perform a non-perturbative sum over geometries in a (2+1)-dimensional quantum gravity model given in terms of Causal Dynamical Triangulations. Inspired by the concept of triangulations of product type introduced previously, we impose an additional notion of order on the discrete, causal geometries. This simplifies the combinatorial problem of counting geometries just enough to enable us to calculate the transfer matrix between boundary states labelled by the area of the spatial universe, as well as the corresponding quantum Hamiltonian of the continuum theory. The spectrum of the Laplace-Beltrami operator, computed on the spatial slices of Causal Dynamical Triangulations, is a powerful probe of the geometrical properties of the configurations sampled in the various phases of the lattice theory. We study the behavior of the lowest eigenvalues of the spectrum and show that this can provide information about the running of length scales as a function of the bare parameters of the theory, hence about the critical behavior around possible second order transition points in the CDT phase diagram, where a continuum limit could be defined.
We search for a continuum limit in the causal dynamical triangulation (CDT) approach to quantum gravity by determining the change in lattice spacing using two independent methods. The two methods yield similar results that may indicate how to tune the relevant couplings in the theory in order to take a continuum limit.
We investigate the impact of topology on the phase structure of four-dimensional Causal Dynamical Triangulations (CDT). Using numerical Monte Carlo simulations we study CDT with toroidal spatial topology. We confirm existence of all four distinct phases of quantum geometry earlier observed in CDT with spherical spatial topology. We plot the toroidal CDT phase diagram and find that it looks very similar to the case of the spherical spatial topology.
We introduce a generalized version of the Causal Dynamical Triangulations (CDT) formulation of quantum gravity, in which the regularized, triangulated path integral histories retain their causal properties, but do not have a preferred proper-time foliation. An extensive numerical study of the associated nonperturbative path integral in 2+1 dimensions shows that it can nevertheless reproduce the emergence of an extended de Sitter universe on large scales, a key feature of CDT quantum gravity. We calculate the spectral dimension for a nonperturbative lattice approach to quantum gravity, known as causal dynamical triangulations (CDT), showing that the dimension of spacetime smoothly decreases from approximately 4 on large distance scales to approximately 3/2 on small distance scales. This novel result may provide a possible resolution to a long-standing argument against the asymptotic safety scenario. Studying transition amplitudes in (2+1)-dimensional causal dynamical triangulations, Cooperman and Miller discovered speculative evidence for Lorentzian quantum geometries emerging from its Euclidean path integral. We consider the model of hard dimers coupled to two-dimensional Causal Dynamical Triangulations (CDT) with all dimer types present and solve it exactly subject to a single restriction. Depending on the dimer weights there are, in addition to the usual gravity phase of CDT, two tri-critical and two dense dimer phases. We establish the properties of these phases, computing their cylinder and disk amplitudes, and their scaling limits.
We introduce a restricted hard dimer model on a random causal triangulation that is exactly solvable and generalizes a model recently proposed by Atkin and Zohren. We show that the latter model exhibits unusual behaviour at its multicritical point; in particular, its Hausdorff dimension equals 3 and not 3/2 as would be expected from general scaling arguments. When viewed as a special case of the generalized model introduced here we show that this behaviour is not generic and therefore is not likely to represent the true behaviour of the full dimer model on a random causal triangulation.

We present a detailed analysis of a recently introduced version of Causal Dynamical Triangulations (CDT) that does not rely on a distinguished time slicing. Focussing on the case of 2+1 spacetime dimensions, we analyze its geometric and causal properties, present details of the numerical set-up and explain how to extract "volume profiles". A novel continuum theory of two-dimensional quantum gravity, based on a version of Causal Dynamical Triangulations which incorporates topology change, has recently been formulated as a genuine string field theory in zero-dimensional target space (arXiv:0802.0719). We investigate a Gibbs (annealed) probability measure defined on Ising spin configurations on causal triangulations of the plane. We study the region where such measure can be defined and provide bounds on the boundary of this region (critical line). We prove that for any finite random triangulation the magnetization of the central spin is sensitive of the boundary conditions. Furthermore, we show that in the infinite volume limit, the magnetization of the central spin vanishes for values of the temperature high enough.

I propose two scale-dependent measures of the homogeneity of the quantum geometry determined by an ensemble of causal triangulations. The first measure is volumetric, probing the growth of volume with graph geodesic distance. The second measure is spectral, probing the return probability of a random walk with diffusion time. Both of these measures, particularly the first, are closely related to those used to assess the homogeneity of our own universe on the basis of galaxy redshift surveys. We study a formulation of lattice gravity defined via Euclidean dynamical triangulations (EDT). After fine-tuning a non-trivial local measure term we find evidence that four-dimensional, semi-classical geometries are recovered at long distance scales in the continuum limit. Furthermore, we find that the spectral dimension at short distance scales is consistent with 3/2, a value that is also observed in the causal dynamical triangulation (CDT) approach to quantum gravity.
The causal dynamical triangulations approach aims to construct a quantum theory of gravity as the continuum limit of a lattice-regularized model of dynamical geometry. We investigate the geometry of a quantum universe with the topology of the four-torus. The study of non-contractible geodesic loops reveals that a typical quantum geometry consists of a small semi-classical toroidal bulk part, dressed with many outgrowths, which contain most of the four-volume and which have almost spherical topologies, but nevertheless are quite fractal.

We study a lattice regularization of the gravitational path integral--causal dynamical triangulations--for (2+1)-dimensional Einstein gravity with positive cosmological constant in the presence of past and future spacelike boundaries of fixed intrinsic geometries. We introduce a dense and a dilute loop model on causal dynamical triangulations. Both models are characterised by a geometric coupling constant $g$ and a loop parameter $α$ in such a way that the purely geometric causal triangulation model is recovered for $α=1$. The spectral dimension measures the dimensionality of a space as witnessed by a diffusing random walker. We propose a new method which analyzes the dynamical triangulation from the viewpoint of the non-critical string field theory. By using the transfer matrix formalism, we construct the non-critical string field theory (including $c>1$ cases) at the discrete level. For pure quantum gravity, we succeed in taking the continuum limit and obtain the $c=0$ non-critical string field theory at the continuous level. We also study about the universality of the non-critical string field theory.
We study the implications of the simplicity constraint in the spincube model of quantum gravity. By relating the edge-lengths to the integer areas of triangles, the simplicity constraint imposes very strong restrictions between them, ultimately leading to a requirement that all 4-simplices in the triangulation must be almost mutually identical. As a surprising and unexpected consequence of this property, one can obtain the CDT state sum as a special case of the spincube state sum.
