We report, for the first time, a comprehensive study involving in situ Raman spectroscopy supported by quantum mechanical calculations to exactly monitor the covalent binding to graphene with unprecedented precision. As a model reaction we have chosen the hydrogenation of reduced graphite ($KC_8$) with $H_2O$ and compared it with the corresponding exposure to $H_2$ and $O_2$. The early stages of graphene hydrogenation are accompanied by the evolution of a series of so far undiscovered D-bands ($D_1$-$D_5$). Using quantum mechanical calculations, we were able to unambiguously assign these bands to distinct lattice vibrations in the neighborhood of the covalently bound addend. Interestingly, the exposure of $KC_8$ to $H_2$ and $O_2$ didn't cause covalent binding, but intercalation of molecular $H_2$ or partial oxidation, respectively. A combination of $H_2O$ and $O_2$ treatment led to the formation of additional hydroxyl (-OH) functionalities. The latter reaction represents a very suitable model for the decomposition of graphenides under ambient conditions (hydrogenation and hydroxylation). We have applied this Raman analysis to simulate and satisfactorily characterize a series of additional covalently functionalised graphene derivatives prepared as bulk materials with different composition (e.g. degree of functionalisation and the nature of covalent addend) demonstrating the generality of the concept and the fundamental value for graphene chemistry.
High-pressure phase of boron oxide, orthorhombic \b{eta}-B2O3, has been studied in situ by synchrotron X-ray diffraction to 22 GPa and Raman scattering to 46 GPa at room temperature. The bulk modulus of \b{eta}-B2O3 has been found to be 169(3) GPa that is in good agreement with our ab initio calculations. Raman and IR spectra of \b{eta}-B2O3 have been measured at ambient pressure, all experimentally observed bands have been attributed to the theoretically calculated ones, and the mode assignment has been performed. Based on the data on Raman shift as a function of pressure, combined with equat…
The unique properties of graphene offer immense opportunities for applications to many scientific fields, as well as societal needs, beyond our present imagination. One of the important features of graphene is the relatively simple tunability of its electronic structure, an asset which extends the usability of graphene even further beyond present experience. A direct injection of charge carriers into the conduction or valence bands, i.e., doping, represents a viable way of shifting the Fermi level. In particular, the electrochemical doping should be the method of choice, when higher doping lev…
In this letter, we report that the special coupling between Dirac fermion and lattice vibrations, in other words, electron-phonon coupling (EPC), in silicene layers on Ag(111) surface was probed by an in-situ Raman spectroscopy. We find the EPC is significantly modulated due to tensile strain, which results from the lattice mismatch between silicene and the substrate, and the charge doping from the substrate. The special phonon modes corresponding to two-dimensional electron gas scattering at edge sites in the silicene were identified. Detecting relationship between EPC and Dirac fermion throu…
Improvement of the photovoltaic efficiency (from 1.2% to 3%) via exposure of organic poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) + phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) devices to solvent vapor at room temperature is reported. In situ photoluminescence (PL) and Raman spectroscopies, in conjunction with optical absorption data, have been used to provide insight into the nanoscale morphological changes occurring during solvent vapor annealing. We found that in P3HT:PCBM, suppression of PL and the decrease in line-width of the 1442 cm-1 P3HT Raman peak are accompanied by strong modifications in the optic…
The compression behavior of delafossite compound CuCrO2 has been investigated by in-situ x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopic measurements upto 23.2 and 34 GPa respectively. X-ray diffraction data shows the stability of ambient rhombohedral structure upto ~ 23 GPa. Material shows large anisotropy in axial compression with c-axis compressibility, c= 1.2610-3(1) GPa-1 and a-axis compressibility, a= 8.9010-3(6) GPa-1. Our XRD data shows an irreversible broadening of diffraction peaks. Pressure volume data when fitted to 3rd order Birch-Murnaghan equation of state gives the value of bulk modu…
Cubic boron phosphide BP has been studied in situ by X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering up to 55 GPa at 300 K in a diamond anvil cell. The bulk modulus of B0 = 174(2) GPa has been established, which is in excellent agreement with our ab initio calculations. The data on Raman shift as a function of pressure, combined with equation-of-state data, allowed us to estimate the Grüneisen parameters of the TO and LO modes of zinc-blende structure, γGTO = 1.16 and γGLO = 1.04, just like in the case of other AIIIBV diamond-like phases, for which γGTO > γGLO = 1. We also established that the pressure…
The effect of pressure on the Raman spectrum of PbWO4 has been investigated up to 48 GPa in a diamond-anvil cell using neon as pressure-transmitting medium. Changes are detected in the Raman spectrum at 6.8 GPa as a consequence of a structural phase transition from the tetragonal scheelite structure to the monoclinic PbWO4-III structure. Two additional phase transitions are detected at 15.5 and 21.2 GPa to the previously unknown crystalline phases IV and V. The last one remains stable up to 43.3 GPa. At 47.7 GPa all Raman modes disappear, which could be caused by a pressure-induced amorphizati…
The two-dimensional silicon allotrope, silicene, could spur the development of new and original concepts in Si-based nanotechnology. Up to now silicene can only be epitaxially synthesized on a supporting substrate such as Ag(111). Even though the structural and electronic properties of these epitaxial silicene layers have been intensively studied, very little is known about its vibrational characteristics. Here, we present a detailed study of epitaxial silicene on Ag(111) using \textit{in situ} Raman spectroscopy, which is one of the most extensively employed experimental techniques to charact…

The interaction of double wall carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) and the conducting polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiphene/polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT/PSS) was studied by in-situ Raman spectroelectrochemistry. The mixing of DWCNTs with PEDOT/PSS caused a partial doping of the outer tube of DWCNTs, which was indicated by the relative change of the Raman intensity of the DWCNTs features. On the other hand, the bands corresponding to inner tubes of DWCNTs and to the polymer were almost untouched by assembling both species into a composite. The in situ Raman spectroelectrochemical experiments have shown t…
Nanostructured carbon films produced by supersonic cluster beam deposition have been studied by in situ Raman spectroscopy. Raman spectra show the formation of a sp2 solid with a very large fraction of sp-coordinated carbyne species showing a long-term stability under ultra high vacuum. Distinct Raman contribution from polyyne and cumulene species have been observed. The long-term stability and the behavior of carbyne-rich films under different gas exposure have been characterized showing different evolution for different sp configurations. Our experiments confirm theoretical predictions and d…

Mixtures containing different weight ratios of single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) and double wall carbon nanotubes (DWCNT) were prepared and studied by in-situ Raman spectroelectrochemistry. Two components of the G-prime mode in the Raman spectra, which can be resolved at high electrode potentials, were assigned to the signals from inner tubes of DWCNT and outer tubes of DWCNT together with SWCNT. The dependence of the ratios of these two components of the G-prime mode on the nominal amount of SWCNT and DWCNT in the samples was simulated so that the residual amount of SWCNT in the original D…
A new experimental approach for in-situ Raman spectroscopy of the electrode | solid electrolyte interfaces in controlled atmospheres, based on the use of optically transparent single-crystal membranes of stabilized cubic zirconia, has been proposed and validated. This technique makes it possible to directly access the electrochemical reaction zone in SOFCs by passing the laser beam through single-crystal electrolyte onto the interface, in combination with simultaneous electrochemical measurements. The case study centered on the analysis of NiO reduction in standard cermet anodes under open-cir…
We study the kinetics of the H release from plasma-deposited hydrogenated amorphous carbon films under isothermal heating at 450, 500 and 600 {\degree}C for long times up to several days using in situ Raman microscopy. Four Raman parameters are analyzed. They allow the identification of different processes such as the carbon network reorganization and the H release from sp3 or sp2 carbon atoms and the corresponding timescales. Carbon reorganization with aromatization and loss of sp3 hybridization occurs first in 100 minutes at 500 {\degree}C. The final organization is similar at all investigat…
Based on the fact that both hardness and vibrational Raman spectrum depend on the intrinsic property of chemical bonds, we propose a new theoretical model for predicting hardness of a covalent crystal. The quantitative relationship between hardness and vibrational Raman frequencies deduced from the typical zincblende covalent crystals is validated to be also applicable for the complex multicomponent crystals. This model enables us to nondestructively and indirectly characterize the hardness of novel superhard materials synthesized under ultra-high pressure condition with the in situ Raman spec…
The paper provides a comprehensive study on Raman spectroscopy versatility as a fast and non destructive tool for the prediction of the mechanical properties of SiC fibers derived from a polymeric precursor (NLM, Hi, Hi-S, SA and Sylramic grades) or produced by CVD (SCS-6 fiber), including in situ analysis in CMCs or MMCs. We show how the results of very simple spectra fitting are correlated with Young's modulus, tensile strength and micro-hardness. The reason why such a correlation exists, the common dependency of Raman signal and mechanical behavior to the micro/nanostructure of ceramics, is…
We investigated 10 to 200 nm thick black phosphorus flakes on SiO2/Si and polyimide substrates by Angle-resolved Polarized Raman spectra (ARPRS) using 442 nm excitation wavelength. The results revealed that ARPRS with 442 nm excitation can provide unambiguous, convenient, non-destructive and fast determination of BP's crystallographic orientation. The substrate and thickness dependencies of Raman spectra and Raman tensor elements were studied. These dependencies were shown to be influenced by Raman excitation laser heating effect. By comparing with in-situ Raman measurements at elevated temper…
Fluid dispersed two-dimensional (2D) composite materials with dynamically tunable functional properties have recently emerged as a novel highly promising class of optoelectronic materials, opening up new routes not only for the emerging field of metamaterials but also to chip-scale multifunctional metadevices. However, in-situ monitoring and detection of the dynamic ordering of 2D nanoparticles on chip and during the device operation is still a huge challenge. Here we introduce a novel approach for on-chip, in-situ Raman characterisation of 2D-fluid composite materials incorporated into Si pho…
We demonstrate electrochemical top gating of graphene by using a solid polymer electrolyte. This allows to reach much higher electron and hole doping than standard back gating. In-situ Raman measurements monitor the doping. The G peak stiffens and sharpens for both electron and hole doping, while the 2D peak shows a different response to holes and electrons. Its position increases for hole doping, while it softens for high electron doping. The variation of G peak position is a signature of the non-adiabatic Kohn anomaly at $Γ$. On the other hand, for visible excitation, the variation of the 2D…
Raman spectroscopy is a useful experimental tool to investigate local deformation and structural changes in SiO$_2$-based glasses. Using a semi-classical modelling of Raman spectra in large samples of silica glasses, we show in this paper that shear plastic flow affects the Raman measurement in the upper part of the spectrum. We relate these changes to structural modifications, as well as a detailed analysis of the vibration modes computed in the same frequency range. These results opens the door to in situ monitoring of plastic damage in silica-based structures.
We present detailed multi frequency resonant Raman measurements of potassium graphite intercalation compounds (GICs). From a well controlled and consecutive in-situ intercalation and high temperature de-intercalation approach the response of each stage up to stage VI is identified. The positions of the G and 2D lines as a function of staging depend on the charge transfer from K to the graphite layers and on the lattice expansion. Ab-initio calculations of the density and the electronic band-structure demonstrate that most (but not all) of the transferred charge remains on the graphene sheets a…
We investigate the evolution of the Raman spectrum of defected graphene as a function of doping. Polymer electrolyte gating allows us to move the Fermi level up to 0.7eV, as monitored by \textit{in-situ} Hall-effect measurements. For a given number of defects, we find that the intensities of the D and D' peaks decrease with increasing doping. We assign this to an increased total scattering rate of the photoexcited electrons and holes, due to the doping-dependent strength of electron-electron scattering. We present a general relation between D peak intensity and defects valid for any doping lev…
We show theoretically that electromagnetic waves propagating in the transparency region of a non-centrosymmetric medium can induce a dc electric current. The origin of the effect is the Raman scattering of light by free carriers in the system. Due to the photon scattering, electrons undergo real quantum transitions resulting in the formation of their anisotropic momentum distribution and in shifts of electronic wavepackets giving rise to a steady state photocurrent. We present microscopic theory of the Raman Photogalvanic effect (RPGE) focusing on two specific situations: (i) generic case of a…
Electrostatic gating offers elegant ways to simultaneously strain and dope atomically thin membranes. Here, we report on a detailed \textit{in situ} Raman scattering study on graphene, suspended over a Si/SiO$_2$ substrate. In such a layered structure, the intensity of the Raman G- and 2D-mode features of graphene are strongly modulated by optical interference effects and allow an accurate determination of the electrostatically-induced membrane deflection, up to irreversible collapse. The membrane deflection is successfully described by an electromechanical model, which we also use to provide …
Recent progress in the on-surface synthesis of graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) has given access to atomically precise narrow GNRs with tunable electronic band gaps that makes them excellent candidates for room-temperature switching devices such as field-effect transistors (FET). However, in spite of their exceptional properties, significant challenges remain for GNR processing and characterization. This contribution addresses some of the most important challenges, including GNR fabrication scalability, substrate transfer, long-term stability under ambient conditions and ex situ characterization. W…
We present a fast and simple way to determine the erosion rate and absorption coefficient of hydrogenated amorphous carbon films exposed to a hydrogen atomic source based on ex-situ Raman micro-spectroscopy. Results are compared to ellipsometry measurement. The method is applied to films eroded at different temperatures. A maximum of the erosion rate is found at ~ 450 {\degree}C in agreement with previous results. This technique is suitable for future quantitative studies on the erosion of thin carbonaceous films, especially of interest for plasma wall interactions occurring in thermonuclear f…
We report crystal growth and Raman spectroscopy characterization of pure and mixed bulk topological insulators. The series comprises of both binary and ternary tetradymite topological insulators. We analyzed in detail the Raman peaks of vibrational modes as out of plane Ag, and in plane Eg for both binary and ternary tetradymite topological insulators. Both out of plane Ag exhibit obvious atomic size dependent peak shifts and the effect is much lesser for the former than the latter. The situation is rather interesting for in plane Eg, which not only shows the shift but rather a broader hump li…
One of the greatest issues of nanoelectronics today is how to control the heating of the components. Graphene is a promising material in this area and it is essential to study its thermal properties. Here, the effect of heating a bilayer structure was investigated using in situ Raman spectroscopy. In order to observe the effects on each individual layer, an isotopically labelled bilayer graphene was synthesized where the two layers are composed of different carbon isotopes. Therefore, the frequency of the phonons in the Raman spectra is shifted in relation to each other. This technique was use…
Patterning of graphene into micro- and nano-ribbons allows for the tunability in emerging fields such as flexible electronic and optoelectronic devices, and is gaining interest for the production of more efficient reinforcement for composite materials. In this work we fabricate micro-ribbons from CVD graphene by combining UV photolithography and dry etching oxygen plasma treatments. Raman spectral imaging confirms the effectiveness of the patterning procedure, which is suitable for large-area patterning of graphene on wafer-scale, and confirms that the quality of graphene remains unaltered. Th…
Raman Spectroscopy offers an in-situ, rapid, and non-destructive characterization tool for chemical analysis of diverse samples with no or minimal preparation. However, due to the inherent weak signal of conventional Raman spectroscopy, surface plasmon resonance features of noble metal nanoparticles have been utilized to conduct Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) in detecting trace label contaminants in foods and foodstuffs. In this effort, we synthesized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) by reduction of chloroauric acid (HAuCl4) with sodium citrate dehydrate. We prepared different sizes of A…
The tetradymite compound BiSbTeSe$_2$, is one of the most bulk-insulating three-dimensional topological insulators, which makes it important in the topological insulator research. It is a member of the solid-solution system Bi$_{2-x}$Sb$_x$Te$_{3-y}$Se$_y$, for which the local crystal structure, such as the occupation probabilities of each atomic site, is not well understood. We have investigated the temperature and polarization dependent spontaneous Raman scattering in BiSbTeSe$_2$, revealing a much higher number of lattice vibrational modes than predicted by group theoretical considerations …

Raman scattering and photoluminescence spectroscopy are used to investigate the optical properties of single layer black phosphorus obtained by mechanical exfoliation of bulk crystals under an argon atmosphere. The Raman spectroscopy, performed in situ on the same flake as the photoluminescence measurements, demonstrates the single layer character of the investigated samples. The emission spectra, dominated by excitonic effects, display the expected in plane anisotropy. The emission energy depends on the type of substrate on which the flake is placed due to the different dielectric screening. …
While the basal plane of graphene is inert, defects in it are centers of chemical activity. An attractive application of such defects is towards controlled functionalization of graphene with foreign molecules. However, the interaction of the defects with reactive environment, such as ambient, decreases the efficiency of functionalization and makes it poorly controlled. Here, we report a novel approach to generate, monitor with time resolution, and functionalize the defects $\textit{in situ}$ without ever exposing them to the ambient. The defects are generated by an energetic Argon plasma and t…
Films of graphene oxide (GO) were produced on the inner walls of glass microcapillaries via insertion of a GO water suspension followed by quick drying with a hot finger (no previous surface functionalization required). Individual capillaries from an array could also be selectively GO coated. Raman hyperspectral images revealed the films to be continuous along tens of centimeters. Furthermore, the films could be thermally reduced through an annealing process, which also decreased the concentration of defects. As a proof of principle application, the microcapillaries of photonic crystal fibers …
Using in-situ Raman scattering from phosphorene channel in an electrochemically top-gated field effect transistor, we show that its phonons with A$_g$ symmetry depend much more strongly on concentration of electrons than that of holes, while the phonons with B$_g$ symmetry are insensitive to doping. With first-principles theoretical analysis, we show that the observed electon-hole asymmetry arises from the radically different constitution of its conduction and valence bands involving $π$ and $σ$ bonding states respectively, whose symmetry permits coupling with only the phonons that preserve th…
Carbon nanotube (CNT) fibres are firmly established as a new high-performance fibre, but their tensile mechanical properties remain a relatively small fraction of those of the constituent CNTs. Clear structure-property relations and accurate mechanical models are pressing requirements to bridge this gap. In this work we analyse the structural evolution and molecular stress transfer in CNT fibres by performing in-situ synchrotron wide- and small-angle X-ray scattering and Raman spectroscopy during tensile deformation. The results show that CNT fibres can be accurately described as network of bu…

The mass of GNP in the nanocomposites varied by 5, 10, and 15 wt% compared to PANI. The synthesized polyaniline coated graphene nanoplatelets (PANI-GNP) nanocomposites are chemically characterized and using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV-Vis spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). FTIR and Raman spectroscopy analysis c…
