Strontium doping transforms manganites of type La(1-x)Sr(x)MnO(3) from an insulating antiferromagnet (x=0) to a metallic ferromagnet (x>0.16) due to the induced charge carriers (holes). Neutron scattering experiments were employed to investigate the effect of Sr doping on a tailor-made compound of composition La(0.7)Sr(0.3)Mn(0.1)Ti(0.3)Ga(0.6)O(3). By the simultaneous doping with Sr2+ and Ti4+ ions the compound remains in the insulating state, so that the magnetic interactions for large Sr doping can be studied in the absence of charge carriers. At TC=215 K there is a first-order reconstructive phase transition from the trigonal R-3c structure to the orthorhombic Pnma structure via an intermediate virtual configuration described by the common monoclinic subgroup P21/c. The magnetic excitations associated with Mn3+ dimers give evidence for two different nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic exchange interactions, in contrast to the undoped compound LaMnyA(1-y)O(3) where both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions are present. The doping induced changes of the exchange coupling originates from different Mn-O-Mn bond angles determined by neutron diffraction. The large fourth-nearest-neighbor interaction found for metallic manganites is absent in the insulating state. We argue that the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction reasonably accounts for all the exchange couplings derived from the spin-wave dispersion in metallic manganites.
We argue that many properties of the half-doped manganites may be understood in terms of a new two-(eg electron)-fluid description, which is energetically favorable at intermediate Jahn-Teller (JT) coupling. This emerges from a competition between canting of the core spins of Mn promoting mobile carriers and polaronic trapping of carriers by JT defects, in the presence of CE, orbital and charge order. We show that this explains several features of the doping and magnetic field induced insulator-metal transitions, as the particle-hole asymmetry and the smallness of the transition fields.
We discuss the phase diagram of the two-orbital model of half-doped manganites by calculating self-consistently the Jahn-Teller (JT) distortion patterns, charge, orbital and magnetic order at zero temperature. We analyse the instabilities of these phases caused by electron or hole doping away from half-doping, or by the application of a magnetic-field. For the CE insulating phase of half-doped manganites, in the intermediate JT coupling regime, we show that there is a competition between canting of spins (which promotes mobile carriers) and polaronic self-trapping of carriers by JT defects. Th…
In this paper we report the results of the synthesis and structural, transport and magnetic characterization of pure La0.5Sr1.5MnO4 (LSMO) and 5% doped samples, i.e. La0.5Sr1.5Mn0.95B0.05O4, where B = Ru, Co and Ni. It is shown that even a light doping is successful in suppressing the charge and orbital ordering found for the pure LSMO. In general, doping favours the carrier motion and, from a magnetic point of view, the set-up a spin-glass state. Moreover, structural parameters show an anisotropy in the lattice constant variation, with the tetragonal distortion increasing as the cell volume r…
In this work we report a structural, electrical and magnetic characterization of the La1-xNaxMn1-yRuyO3+d (LNMRO) system with x = 0.05, 0.15 and y = 0, 0.05, 0.15, also comprising an investigation of the role of the oxygen content on the related redox properties. The experimental investigation has been realized with the aid of X-ray powder diffraction, electron microprobe analysis, thermogravimetry, electrical resistivity and magnetization measurements, and electron paramagnetic resonance. We demonstrate that the effect of ruthenium doping on the studied LNMRO compounds is not only directly re…
We have studied the effect of Al doping on the structural, magnetic and electrical properties of La$_{1-x}$Ba$_x$Mn$_{1-x}$Al$_x$O$_3$ ($0\leq x \leq 0.25$) manganite, annealed in two 750$^oC$ and 1350$^oC$ temperatures. The XRD analysis shows that the structures in all samples have single phase rhombohedral structure with R$\bar{3}$c space group. The unit cell volume almost decrease with increasing the Al doping in all samples. The grain growth with increasing annealing temperature and Al doping also have been studied. We observed that, T$_c$ temperature decreases when the Al ion substitute i…
In this Communication is it shown the role of Ca-doping in stabilizing the A-type AFM structure of the optimally doped La1.4Sr1.6Mn2O7 bilayered manganite.
Impurity effects on the stability of a ferromagnetic metallic state in a bicritical-state manganite, (La0.7Pr0.3)0.65Ca0.35MnO3, on the verge of metal-insulator transition have been investigated by substituting a variety of transition-metal atoms for Mn ones. Among them, Fe doping exhibits the exceptional ability to dramatically decrease the ferromagnetic transition temperature. Systematic studies on the magnetotransport properties and x-ray diffraction for the Fe-doped crystals have revealed that charge-orbital ordering evolves down to low temperatures, which strongly suppresses the ferromagn…
Versatile features of impurity doping effects on perovskite manganites, $R_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.4}$MnO$_{3}$, have been investigated with varying the doing species as well as the $R$-dependent one-electron bandwidth. In ferromagnetic-metallic manganites ($R$=La, Nd, and Sm), a few percent of Fe substitution dramatically decreases the ferromagnetic transition temperature, leading to a spin glass insulating state with short-range charge-orbital correlation. For each $R$ species, the phase diagram as a function of Fe concentration is closely similar to that for $R_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.4}$MnO$_{3}$ obtained by de…
A recent, major, puzzle in the core-level photoemission spectra of doped manganites is the observation of a 1-2 eV wide shoulder with intensity varying with temperature T as the square of the magnetization over a T scale of order 200K, an order of magnitude less than electronic energies. This is addressed and resolved here, by extending a recently proposed two electron fluid l-b model for these systems to include core-hole effects. The shoulder arises from a rapid redistribution of e_g electron density, as a function of T, between the highly localized (l) and band-like (b) states. Furthermore,…
We report a detailed study of the electric transport and magnetic properties of the LaNdCaMnO manganite system. Substitution of LaIII by smaller NdIII ions, reduces the mean ionic radius of the A site ion. We have studied samples in the entire range between rich La and rich Nd compounds. Results of DC magnetization and resistivity show that doping destabilize the FM character of the pure La compound and triggers the formation of a phase separated state at intermediate doping. We have also found evidence of a dynamical behaviour within the phase separated state. A phase diagram is constructed, …
A complex structural, magnetic and electric transport investigation shows that the Cr doping on Mn sites in the A-type antiferromagnet Pr0.44Sr0.56MnO3 provokes a non-uniform magnetic state with coexisting FM and AFM regions. Irrespective of the ratio of magnetic phases, the samples exhibit a non-metallic behavior of resistivity and thermopower, pointing to the nanoscopic nature of the phase separation. A particularly large magnetoresistance encountered in a broad range of temperatures for samples with Cr doping of 4 - 6 % supports such idea.
We report a study of magnetic dynamics in multiferroic hexagonal manganite HoMnO3 by far-infrared spectroscopy. Low-temperature magnetic excitation spectrum of HoMnO3 consists of magnetic-dipole transitions of Ho ions within the crystal-field split J=8 manifold and of the triangular antiferromagnetic resonance of Mn ions. We determine the effective spin Hamiltonian for the Ho ion ground state. The magnetic-field splitting of the Mn antiferromagnetic resonance allows us to measure the magnetic exchange coupling between the rare-earth and Mn ions.
The structure, electronic, and magnetic properties of the Mo-doped perovskite La0.7Ca0.3Mn1-xMoxO3 (x < 0.1) have been studied. A significant increase in resistivity and lattice parameters were observed with Mo doping. A marginal decrease in the Curie temperature Tc and the associated metal-insulator transition Tp were observed. Magnetization data reveal that long-range ferromagnetic ordering persists in all samples studied and the saturation moment decreases linearly as x increases. Enhancement in magnetoresistance at near Tc in the Mo-doped compounds with an optimum doping value x = 0.05 was…
In this Communication we report about the unexpected effect of ruthenium doping in sodium ligthly-doped manganites. This effect seems to be in contrast with the usual model applied to describe the effect of this magnetic ion into the manganite structure. We propose a possible compensation mechanism which seems also able to describe other peculiar features encountered in these materials.
The effect of Cu-doping at Mn-site on structural, magnetic and transport properties in electron-doped manganites La0.85Te0.15Mn1-xCuxO3 has been investigated. Based on the analysis of structural parameter variations, the valence state of the Cu ion in Cu-doped manganites is suggested to be +2. All samples undergo the paramagnetic-ferromagnetic (PM-FM) phase transition. The Curie temperature decreases and the transition becomes broader with increasing Cu-doping level, in contrast, the magnetization magnitude of Cu-doping samples at low temperatures increase as x \leq 0.15. The insulator-metal (…
The (001) surface of La_{1-x}Ca_xMnO_3 system in various magnetic orderings is studied by first principle calculations. A general occurrence is that z^2 dangling bond charge -- which is ``invisible'' in the formal valence picture -- is promoted to the bulk gap/Fermi level region. This drives a double-exchange-like process that serves to align the surface Mn spin with its subsurface neighbor, regardless of the bulk magnetic order. For heavy doping, the locally ``ferromagnetic'' coupling is very strong and the moment enhanced by as much as 30% over the bulk value.
The results of the synthesis and characterization of the optimally doped (La)1.4(Sr1-yCay)1.6Mn2O7 solid solution with y=0, 0.25 and 0.5 are reported. By progressively replacing the Sr with the smaller Ca, while keeping fixed the hole-concentration due to the divalent dopant, the 'size effect' of the cation itself on the structural, transport and magnetic properties of the bilayered manganite has been analysed. Two different annealing treatments of the solid solution, in pure oxygen and in pure argon, allowed also to study the effect of the oxygen content variation. Structure and electronic pr…
Strong correlated manganites are still under intense research owing to their complex phase diagrams in terms of the Sr-doping and their sensitivity to intrinsic and extrinsic structural deformations. Here, we performed x-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements of manganites bilayers to explore the effects that a local Sr-doping gradient produce on the charge and antiferromagnetic anisotropies. In order to gradually tune the Sr-doping level along the axis perpendicular to the samples we have grown a series of bilayers with different thicknesses of low-doped manganites (from 0 nm to 6 nm) depos…
We demonstrate that delta-doping can be used to create a dimensionally confined region of metallic ferromagnetism in an antiferromagnetic (AF) manganite host, without introducing any explicit disorder due to dopants or frustration of spins. Delta-doped carriers are inserted into a manganite superlattice (SL) by a digital-synthesis technique. Theoretical consideration of these additional carriers show that they cause a local enhancement of ferromagnetic (F) double-exchange with respect to AF superexchange, resulting in local canting of the AF spins. This leads to a highly modulated magnetizatio…
The relationship between orbital and spin degrees of freedom in the single-crystals of the hole-doped Pr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{1+x}$MnO$_4$, 0.3 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 0.7, has been investigated by means of ac-magnetometry and charge transport. Even though there is no cation ordering on the $A$-site, the quenched disorder is extremely weak in this system due to the very similar ionic size of Pr$^{3+}$ and Ca$^{2+}$. A clear asymmetric response of the system to the under- (respective over-) hole doping was observed. The long-ranged charge-orbital order established for half doping ($x$=0.5) subsists in the ove…
The possibility to induce ferromagnetism and insulator to metal transitions in small A site cation manganites Ln_{1-x}Ca_xMnO_3 by rhodium doping is shown for the first time. Colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) properties are evidenced for a large compositional range (0.35 \leq x < 0.60). The ability of rhodium to induce such properties is compared to the results obtained by chromium and ruthenium doping. Models are proposed to explain this behavior.
Double-exchange mechanisms in RE$_{1-x}$AE$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ manganites (where RE is a trivalent rare-earth ion and AE is a divalent alkali-earth ion) relies on the strong exchange interaction between two Mn$^{3+}$ and Mn$^{4+}$ ions through interfiling oxygen 2p states. Nevertheless, the role of RE and AE ions has ever been considered "silent" with respect to the DE conducting mechanisms. Here we show that a new path for DE-mechanism is indeed possible by partially replacing the RE-AE elements by Mn$^{2+}$-ions, in La-deficient La$_{x}$MnO$_{3-δ}$ thin films. X-ray absorption spectroscopy demons…
La1-xCaxMnO3+delta and La1-xNaxMnO3+delta samples with well defined cation molecularity and oxygen contents are analyzed with XRPD, electrical conductivity, electron paramagnetic resonance and static magnetization measurements. Point defects are introduced in the structure by: i) aliovalent cation doping (substitutional defects), ii) oxygen over-stoichiometry (cation vacancies) and iii) oxygen under-stoichiometry (oxygen vacancies). The cation doping mainly influences the material by affecting the tolerance factor and the oxidation of the Mn ions; the cation vacancies affect the magnetic prope…
The ac-susceptibility of the electron doped single-layered manganite La$_{1.1}$Sr$_{0.9}$MnO$_4$ is analyzed in detail. A quasi two-dimensional (2$D$) antiferromagnetic (AFM) order with Ising anisotropy is stabilized below $T_N$ $\sim$ 80K. We show that below $T_N$, a rare 2$D$ spin-glass (SG) correlation develops with the same Ising anisotropy as the AFM state. Using simple scaling arguments of the droplet model, we derive a scaling form for the ac-susceptibility data of a 2$D$ SG, which our experimental data follows fairly well. Due to simplifications in this 2$D$ case, the proposed scaling …
We have demonstrated the effect of hydrostatic pressure on magnetic and transport properties, and thermal transport properties in electron-doped manganites CaMn$_{1-x}$Sb$_{x}$O$_{3}$. The substitution of Sb$^{5+}$ ion for Mn $^{4+}$site of the parent matrix causes one-electron doping with the chemical formula CaMn$^{4+}_{1-2x}$Mn$^{3+}_{x}$Sb$^{5+}_{x}$O$_{3}$ accompanied by a monotonous increase in unit cell volume as a function of $x$. Upon increasing the doping level of Sb, the magnitudes of both electrical resistivity and negative Seebeck coefficient are suppressed at high temperatures, i…
We study the mechanism of orbital-order melting observed at temperature T_OO in the series of rare-earth manganites. We find that many-body super-exchange yields a transition-temperature T_KK that decreases with decreasing rare-earth radius, and increases with pressure, opposite to the experimental T_OO. We show that the tetragonal crystal-field splitting reduces T_KK further increasing the discrepancies with experiments. This proves that super-exchange effects, although very efficient, in the light of the experimentally observed trends, play a minor role for the melting of orbital ordering in…
We present a detailed magnetic study of the Pr1/3Ca2/3MnO3 manganite, where we observe the presence of small ferromagnetic (FM) domains (diameter ~ 10A) immersed within the charge-ordered antiferromagnetic (AFM) host. Due to the interaction of the FM nanodroplets with a disordered AFM shell, the low-temperature magnetization loops present exchange bias (EB) under cooling in an applied magnetic field. Our analysis of the cooling field dependence of the EB yields an antiferromagnetic interface exchange coupling comparable to the bulk exchange constant of the AFM phase. We also observe training e…
The highly anisotropic resistivities in strained manganites are theoretically studied using the two-orbital double-exchange model. At the nanoscale, the anisotropic double-exchange and Jahn-Teller distortions are found to be responsible for the robust anisotropic resistivities observed here via Monte Carlo simulations. An unbalanced in the population of orbitals caused by strain is responsible for these effects. In contrast, the anisotropic superexchange is found to be irrelevant to explain our results. Our model study suggests that highly anisotropic resistivities could be present in a wide r…
The double exchange model describing the coupling between conduction electrons and localized magnetic moments is relevant for a large family of physical systems including manganites. Here we reveal that the one dimensional double exchange model with an incommensurate magnetic elliptical spiral is a topological insulator with a Chern number $2\mathbb{Z}$ in the two dimensional space with one physical dimension and one ancillary dimension spanned by the Goldstone mode of the spiral. Moreover, the electronic states can be localized for a strong local exchange coupling. The topological protected e…
In strongly correlated electronic systems, such as manganites, the global transport behavior depends sensitively on the spin ordering, whose alteration often requires a large external magnetic field. Here we show that the spin ordering in manganites can be easily controlled by exchange field across the interface between a ferromagnet and a manganite. By depositing isolated ferromagnetic nanodots on a manganite thin film, we find that it is possible to overcome dimensionality and strain effects to raise the metal-insulator transition (MIT) temperature by over 200 K and increase the magnetoresis…
Magnetoelectric (ME) materials are of fundamental interest and show broad potential for technological applications. Commonly the dominant contribution to the ME response is the lattice-mediated one, which is proportional to both the Born electric charge $Z^{\rm e}$ and its analogue, the dynamical magnetic charge $Z^{\rm m}$. Our previous study has shown that exchange striction acting on noncollinear spins induces much larger magnetic charges than those that depend on spin-orbit coupling. The hexagonal manganites $R$MnO$_3$ and ferrites $R$FeO$_3$ ($R$ = Sc, Y, In, Ho-Lu) exhibit strong couplin…
We have investigated the influence of B - site doping on the crystal and magnetic structure in $La_{0.5}Ca_{0.5}Mn_{1-x}B_{x}O_{3}$ (B= Fe, Ru, Al and Ga) compounds using neutron diffraction, SANS, magnetization and resistivity techniques. The B - site doped samples are isostructural and possess an orthorhombic structure in \textit{Pnma} space group at 300K. A structural transition from orthorhombic to monoclinic is found to precede the magnetic transition to CE - type antiferromagnetic state in few of these samples. On doping with Fe, charge and orbitally ordered CE - type antiferromagnetic s…
The phase diagram of quarter-hole-doped perovskite manganites is investigated using the doubleexchange model. An exotic striped type-II multiferroic phase, where 25% of the nearest-neighbor spin couplings are orthogonal to each other, is found in the narrow-bandwidth region. Comparing with the spiral-spin ordering phase of undoped manganites, the multiferroic Curie temperature of the new phase is estimated to be ~4 times higher, while the ferroelectric polarization is similar in magnitude. Our study provides a path for noncollinear spin multiferroics based on electronic self-organization, diff…
The theoretical study of spin diffusion in double-exchange magnets by means of dynamical mean-field theory is presented. We demonstrate that the spin-diffusion coefficient becomes independent of the Hund's coupling JH in the range of parameters JH*S >> W >> T, W being the bandwidth, relevant to colossal magnetoresistive manganites in the metallic part of their phase diagram. Our study reveals a close correspondence as well as some counterintuitive differences between the results on Bethe and hypercubic lattices. Our results are in accord with neutron scattering data and with previous theoretic…
We use neutron scattering to investigate the doping evolution of the magnetic correlations in the single-layer manganite $\rm Pr_{\it 1-x}Ca_{\it 1+x}MnO_4$, away from the $x=0.5$ composition where the CE-type commensurate antiferromagnetic (AF) structure is stable. We find that short-range incommensurate spin correlations develop as the system is electron doped ($x<0.5$), which coexist with the CE-type AF order. This suggests that electron doping in this system induces an inhomogeneous electronic self-organization, where commensurate AF patches with $x=0.5$ are separated by electron-rich doma…
Using first-principles calculations, we show that the (001) surface of the ferromagnet La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ under epitaxial compression favors antiferromagnetic ordering in the first few surface layers, coexisting with ferromagnetic bulk order. The change in magnetic order is accompanied by a marked surface-related spectral pseudogap, signaling a metal-insulator near-transition at the surface. All surfaces exhibit huge outward relaxations an rumpling of the MnO$_{2}$ and LaO surface planes, causing a distinct shift in work function. The AF phase is an extreme surface-assisted case of th…
Considering the disorder caused in manganites by the substitution of Mn by Fe or Ga, we accomplish a systematic study of doped manganites begun in previous papers. To this end, a disordered model is formulated and solved using the Variational Mean Field technique. The subtle interplay between double exchange, super-exchange, and disorder causes similar effects on the dependence of T_C on the percentage of Mn substitution in the cases considered. Yet, in La$_{2/3}$Ca$_{1/3}$Mn$_{1-y}$Ga$_y$O$_3$ our results suggest a quantum critical point (QCP) for $y\approx 0.1-0.2$, associated to the localiz…
We investigate the behavior of ultrasharp metamagnetic transitions in La(5/8-y)Nd(y)Ca(3/8)MnO(3) manganites. These compounds change from a low temperature ferromagnetic metallic state at low Nd doping to a charge-ordered antiferromagnetic insulator for high Nd content. At an intermediate doping a phase-separated state is established. At low temperatures (2 K), we observe an avalanche-like field-induced metamagnetic transition, when the entire compound changes abruptly from one phase to the other. We investigate the signatures of this ultrasharp transition using magnetization and specific heat…
By performing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of the bilayer colossal magnetoresistive (CMR) manganite, $La_{2-2x}Sr_{1+2x}Mn_{2}O_{7}$, we provide the complete mapping of the Fermi level spectral weight topology. Clear and unambiguous bilayer splitting of the in-plane 3d$_{x^2-y^2}$ band, mapped throughout the Brillouin zone, and the full mapping of the 3d$_{3z^2-r^2}$ band are reported. Peculiar doping and temperature dependencies of these bands imply that as transition from the ferromagnetic metallic phase approaches, either as a function of doping or temperature, coherence along …
We report an interesting reentrant metallic resistivity pattern beyond a characteristic temperature T* which is higher than other such characteristic transition temperatures like T(c)(Curie point), T(N) (Neel point), T(CO) (charge order onset point) or T(OO) (orbital order onset point) in a range of rare-erath perovskite manganites (RE(1-x)A(x)MnO(3); RE = La, Nd, Y; A = Sr, Ca; x = 0.0-0.5). Such a behavior is normally observed in doped manganites with doping level (x) higher than the critical doping level x(c) (= 0.17-0.22) required for the metallic ground state to emerge and hence in a syst…
Exchange bias has been studied in a series of La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 / La1/3Ca2/3MnO3 bilayers grown on (001) SrTiO3 substrates by ozone-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. The high crystalline quality of the samples and interfaces has been verified using high-resolution X-ray diffractometry and Z-contrast scanning transmission electron microscopy with electron energy loss spectroscopy. The dependence of exchange bias on the thickness of the antiferromagnetic layer has been investigated. A critical value for the onset of the hysteresis loop shift has been determined. An antiferromagnetic anisotropy const…
The magnetic and orbital orders for the bilayer manganites in the doping region $0.5 < x <1.0$ have been investigated from a model that incorporates the two $e_g$ orbitals at each Mn site, the inter-orbital Coulomb interaction and lattice distortions. The usual double exchange operates via the $e_g$ orbitals. It is shown that such a model reproduces much of the phase diagram recently obtained for the bilayer systems in this range of doping. The C-type phase with ($π,0,π$) spin order seen by Ling et al. appears as a natural consequence of the layered geometry and is stabilised by the static dis…
In this work we studied, by means of high-resolution neutron diffraction as a function of temperature, the La1.4Sr0.8Ca0.8Mn2O7 bilayered manganite for two different annealing treatments. Out data allowed us to shown, for the first time, the absence of long-range magnetic order in this optimally doped bilayered manganite where the A-site of the structure is doped with equal proportions of different isovalent cations (Ca and Sr). The system, however, presents defined IM transitions which suggest that the transport properties are not linked to the evolution of long-range order and that two dimen…
The role of elastic interactions between Jahn-Teller ions in formation of various orbital- and charge-ordered structures in manganites and related compounds is analyzed. It is shown that such interactions alone are often sufficient to reproduce the structures observed in different regions of the phase diagram. A special attention is focused on stripe structures at high doping levels.
An introduction is given to the many-body coherent potential approximation (CPA) for the double-exchange (DE) model and the Holstein-DE model, the latter including coupling of the electrons to local phonons as well as to local spins. It is shown how the method can treat the local spins and phonons quantum-mechanically and how it is equivalent to dynamical mean field theory in the classical limit. In the Holstein-DE model a full discussion is given of the cross-over from weak electron-phonon coupling through intermediate coupling, where small-polaron bands begin to appear, to strong coupling wh…
We present a single-orbital double-exchange model, coupled with cooperative phonons (the so called breathing-modes of the oxygen octahedra in manganites). The model is studied with Monte Carlo simulations. For a finite range of doping and coupling constants, a first-order Metal-Insulator phase transition is found, that coincides with the Paramagnetic-Ferromagnetic phase transition. The insulating state is due to the self-trapping of every carrier within an oxygen octahedron distortion.
We study theoretically the magnetic and electric properties of the interface between two antiferromagnetic and insulating manganites: La0.5Ca0.5MnO3, a strong correlated insulator, and CaMnO3, a band-insulator. We find that a ferromagnetic and metallic electron gas is formed at the interface between the two layers. We confirm the metallic character of the interface by calculating the in-plane conductance. The possibility of increasing the electron gas density by selective doping is also discussed.
Manganites are famous mostly for the colossal magnetoresistive effect, which involves the phase separation between ferromagnetic phase and charge-ordered CE-type antiferromagnetic phases. Furthermore, manganites contain some typical magnetic ferroelectrics, e.g. E-type antiferromagnetic $o$-HoMnO$_3$. Here we re-examined these zigzag-winding antiferromagnetic phases (CE-type and E-type antiferromagnets) from the topological perspective. Our theoretical analysis proved that the E-type phase is a weak topological insulator belonging to the $\mathbb{Z}$ class. In momentum space, we classify the s…
We study the existence of incommensurate phases in the phase diagram of the two orbital double exchange model coupled with Jahn-Teller phonons and with superexchange interactions. In agreement with experimental results, we find that undoped manganites $RMnO_3$ ($R$ being some rare earth element) show temperature induced commensurate-incommensurate phase transitions. In the incommensurate phase the magnetic wave vector varies with temperature. The incommensurate phase arises from the competition between the short range antiferromagnetic superexchange interaction and the long range ferromagnetic…
Optical conductivity spectra of La_{0.7-y}Pr_{y}Ca_{0.3}MnO_3 were systematically investigated. For metallic samples, the spectral weight below 0.5 eV, whose magnitude can be represented by the effective carrier number N_{eff}(0.5 eV), increases as temperature becomes lower. Regardless of the Pr doping, all the measured values of N_{eff}(0.5 eV)/T_C fall into one scaling curve. This scaling behavior could be explained by the theoretical model by Roeder et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, 1356 (1996)], which includes spin double exchange and Jahn-Teller lattice coupling to holes. With the Pr doping, f…
The exchange bias (EB) phenomenon has been found in Nd2/3Ca1/3MnO3 perovskite. The phenomenon manifests itself as a negative horizontal shift of magnetization hysteresis loops. The EB phenomenon is evident of an interface exchange coupling between coexisting antiferromagnetic (AFM) and ferromagnetic (FM) phases and confirms the phase separated state of the compound at low temperatures. The EB effect is found to be strongly dependent on the cooling magnetic field and the temperature, which is associated with the evolution of spontaneous AFM - FM phase separated state of the compound. Analysis o…
Complete magnetoelectric (ME) phase diagrams of orthorhombic $R$MnO$_{3}$ with and without magnetic moments on the $R$ ions have been established. Three kinds of multiferroic ground states, the $ab$-cycloidal, the $bc$-cycloidal, and the collinear $E$-type phases, have been identified by the distinct ME responses. The electric polarization of the $E$-type phase dominated by the symmetric spin exchange ($bm{S}_{i} cdot bm{S}_{j}$) is more than 10 times as large as that of the $bc$-cycloidal phase dominated by the antisymmetric one ($bm{S}_{i} times bm{S}_{j}$), and the ME response is enhanced n…
We use ab initio electronic structure calculations within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA+U) to density functional theory (DFT) to determine the microscopic exchange interactions in the series of orthorhombic rare-earth manganites, o-$R$MnO$_3$. Our motivation is to construct a model Hamiltonian (excluding effects due to spin-orbit coupling), which can provide an accurate description of the magnetism in these materials. First, we consider TbMnO$_3$, which exhibits a spiral magnetic order at low temperatures. We map the exchange couplings in this compound onto a Heisenberg Hamiltoni…
By using a realist microscopic model, we study the electric and magnetic properties of the interface between a half metallic manganite and an insulator. We find that the lack of carriers at the interface debilitates the double exchange mechanism, weakening the ferromagnetic coupling between the Mn ions. In this situation the ferromagnetic order of the Mn spins near the interface is unstable against antiferromagnetic CE correlations, and a separation between ferromagnetic/metallic and antiferromagnetic/insulator phases at the interfaces can occur. We obtain that the insertion of extra layers of…
The problem of adequate electronic model for doped manganites like La_{1-x}Sr_{x}MnO_3 remains controversial. In such a situation we argue a necessity to discuss all possible candidate states with different valent structure of manganese and oxygen atoms, as well as different valent states of octahedral MnO_{6} centers. In frames of quantum-chemical approach, crystal field and the ligand field models we address different types of MnO_6 centers, different types of d-d, and charge transfer transitions. We draw special attention to the so-called charge transfer states related to strong intra-cente…
We show that applying strain on half-doped manganites makes it possible to tune the system to the proximity of a metal-insulator transition and thereby generate a colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) response. This phase competition not only allows control of CMR in ferromagnetic metallic manganites but can be used to generate CMR response in otherwise robust insulators at half-doping. Further, from our realistic microscopic model of strain and magnetotransport calculations within the Kubo formalism, we demonstrate a striking result of strain engineering that, under tensile strain, a ferromagnetic…
Calculations of one-electron spectral functions, optical conductivity and spin-wave energy in the Holstein double-exchange model are made using the many-body coherent potential approximation. Satisfactory agreement is obtained with angle-resolved photoemission results on La_1.2Sr_1.8Mn_2O_7 and optical measurements on Nd_0.7Sr_0.3MnO_3. A pseudogap in the one-electron spectrum at the Fermi level plays an important role in both systems, but a small-polaron band is only predicted to exist in the La system. A rigorous upper bound on spin-wave energies at T=0 is derived. The spin-wave stiffness co…
We invesitgate the electronic correlation effect on the ground-state properties of the double exchange model for manganites by using a semiclassical approach and the slave-boson technique. It is shown that magnetic feild has a similar effect on the canted angle between manganese spins as doping concentration does, and the canted angle exhibits weak dependence on the Coulomb interaction. We have shown that the phase separation may take place at low doping. In the slave-boson saddle-point approximation in the ferromagnetic metallic regime, the dependence of the magnetization and the Curie temper…
