We study the phase diagram of a class of models in which a generalized cluster interaction can be quenched by Ising exchange interaction and external magnetic field. We characterize the various phases through winding numbers. They may be ordinary phases with local order parameter or exotic ones, known as symmetry protected topologically ordered phases. Quantum phase transitions with dynamical critical exponents z = 1 or z = 2 are found. Quantum phase transitions are analyzed through finite-size scaling of the geometric phase accumulated when the spins of the lattice perform an adiabatic precession. In particular, we quantify the scaling behavior of the geometric phase in relation with the topology and low energy properties of the band structure of the system.
By applying a recently proposed mapping, we derive exactly the upper phase boundary of several Ising spin glass models defined over static graphs and random graphs, generalizing some known results and providing new ones.
We show that, above the critical temperature, if the dimension D of a given Ising spin glass model is sufficiently high, its free energy can be effectively expressed through the free energy of a related Ising model. When, in a large sense, D is infinite, in the paramagnetic phase and on its boundary the mapping is exact. In this limit the method provides a general and simple rule to obtain exactly the upper phase boundaries. We provide even simple effective rules to find crossover surfaces and correlation functions. We apply the mapping to several spin glass models.
The 2-spin Ising model in statistical mechanics and the 2x2 normal form game in game theory are compared. All configurations allowed by the second are recovered by the first when the only concern is about Nash equilibria. But it holds no longer when Pareto optimum condiderations are introduced like in the prisoner's dilemma. This gap can nevertheless be filled by adding a new coupling term to the Ising model, even if that term has up to now no physical meaning. An individual complete bilinear objective function is thus found to be sufficient to reproduce all possible configurations of a 2x2 ga…
The three-state Ising neural network with synchronous updating and variable dilution is discussed starting from the appropriate Hamiltonians. The thermodynamic and retrieval properties are examined using replica mean-field theory. Capacity-temperature phase diagrams are derived for several values of the pattern activity and different gradations of dilution, and the information content is calculated. The results are compared with those for sequential updating. The effect of self-coupling is established. Also the dynamics is studied using the generating function technique for both synchronous an…
Recently, it has been shown that, when the dimension of a graph turns out to be infinite dimensional in a broad sense, the upper critical surface and the corresponding critical behavior of an arbitrary Ising spin glass model defined over such a graph, can be exactly mapped on the critical surface and behavior of a non random Ising model. A graph can be infinite dimensional in a strict sense, like the fully connected graph, or in a broad sense, as happens on a Bethe lattice and in many random graphs. In this paper, we firstly introduce our definition of dimensionality which is compared to the s…
The mixed spin-(1/2, S) Ising model on the union jack (centered square) lattice is investigated by establishing the mapping relationship with its corresponding eight-vertex model. An interplay between the nearest-neighbour interaction, the competing next-nearest-neighbour interaction and the single-ion anisotropy gives rise to a rather complex critical behaviour displayed in the reentrant phase transitions, the weak universal critical behaviour, as well as, a presence of first- and second-order phase transitions. The most interesting finding to emerge from the present study relates to a variat…
We have studied the nucleation in the nearest neighbour ferromagnetic Ising model, in different (d) dimensions, by extensive Monte Carlo simulation using the heat-bath dynamics. The nucleation time (tau) has been studied as a function of the magnetic field (h) for various system sizes in different dimensions (d=2,3,4). The logarithm of the nucleation time is found to be proportional to the power (-(d-1)) of the magnetic field (h) in d dimensions. The size dependent crossover from coalescence to nucleation regime is observed in all dimensions. The distribution of metastable lifetimes are studie…
We discuss with the aid of random walk arguments and exact numerical computations the magnetization properties of one-dimensional random field chains. The ground state structure is explained in terms of absorbing and non-absorbing random walk excursions. At low temperatures, the magnetization profiles follow those of the ground states except at regions where a local random field fluctuation makes thermal excitations feasible. This follows also from the non-absorbing random walks, and implies that the magnetization length scale is a product of these two scales. It is not simply given by the Imr…

Contours associated to many interesting low-temperature statistical mechanics models (2D Ising model, (2+1)D SOS interface model, etc) can be described as self-interacting and self-avoiding walks on $\mathbb Z^2$. When the model is defined in a finite box, the presence of the boundary induces an interaction, that can turn out to be attractive, between the contour and the boundary of the box. On the other hand, the contour cannot cross the boundary, so it feels entropic repulsion from it. In various situations of interest a crucial technical problem is to prove that entropic repulsion prevails …
Low-temperature magnetization curves and thermodynamics of a frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg triangular bilayer with the antiferromagnetic intradimer interaction and either ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic interdimer interaction are investigated in a highly frustrated parameter region, where localized many-magnon eigenstates provide the most dominant contribution to magnetothermodynamics. Low-energy states of the highly frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg triangular bilayer can be accordingly found from a mapping correspondence with an effective triangular-lattice spin-1/2 Ising model in a field. …
The statistical mechanics method is developed for determination of generating function of like-sign spin clusters' size distribution in Ising model as modification of Ising-Potts model by K. K. Murata (1979). It is applied to the ferromagnetic Ising model on Bethe lattice. The analytical results for the field-temperature percolation phase diagram of + spin clusters and their size distribution are obtained. The last appears to be proportional to that of the classical non-correlated bond percolation with the bond probability, which depends on temperature and Ising model parameters.
It has been suggested that Glauber (inflow) and Sznajd (outflow) zero-temperature dynamics for the one dimensional Ising ferromagnet with the nearest neighbors interactions are equivalent. Here we compare both dynamics from analytical and computational points of view. We use the method of mapping an Ising spin system onto the dimer RSA model and show that already this simple mapping allows to see the differences between inflow and outflow zero-temperature dynamics. Then we investigate both dynamics with synchronous, partially synchronous and random sequential updating using the Monte Carlo tec…
Ground-state phase diagram of the mixed spin-1/2 and spin-1 Ising-Heisenberg model on doubly decorated planar lattices is examined using the generalized decoration-iteration transformation. The main attention is devoted to the comparison of the ground-state properties of the quantum Ising-Heisenberg model and its semi-classical Ising analogue.
The upper critical dimension of the Ising model is known to be $d_c=4$, above which critical behavior is regarded as trivial. We hereby argue from extensive simulations that, in the random-cluster representation, the Ising model simultaneously exhibits two upper critical dimensions at $(d_c= 4, d_p=6)$, and critical clusters for $d \geq d_p$, except the largest one, are governed by exponents from percolation universality. We predict a rich variety of geometric properties and then provide strong evidence in dimensions from 4 to 7 and on complete graphs. Our findings significantly advance the un…
The fractal structure of high-temperature graphs of the three-dimensional Ising and XY models is investigated by simulating these graphs directly on a cubic lattice and analyzing them with the help of percolation observables. The Ising graphs are shown to percolate right at the Curie critical point. The diverging length scale relevant to the graphs in the vicinity of the percolation threshold is shown to be provided by the spin correlation length. The fractal dimension of the high-temperature graphs at criticality is estimated to be $D = 1.7349(65)$ for the Ising and $D = 1.7626(66)$ for the X…
We compare the irreversible work produced in an infinitesimal sudden quench of a quantum system at zero temperature with its ground state fidelity susceptibility, giving an explicit relation between the two quantities. We find that the former is proportional to the latter but for an extra term appearing in the irreversible work which includes also contributions from the excited states. We calculate explicitly the two quantities in the case of the quantum Ising chain, showing that at criticality they exhibit different scaling behavior. The irreversible work, rescaled by square of the quench's a…
We establish the universal torus low-energy spectra at the free Dirac fixed point and at the strongly coupled chiral Ising fixed point and their subtle crossover behaviour in the Gross-Neuveu-Yukawa field theory with ${n_\text{D}=4}$ component Dirac spinors in $D=(2+1)$ dimensions. These fixed points and the field theories are directly relevant for the long-wavelength physics of certain interacting Dirac systems, such as repulsive spinless fermions on the honeycomb lattice or $π$-flux square lattice. The torus energy spectrum has been shown previously to serve as a characteristic fingerprint o…
We study the scaling of the average cluster size and percolation strength of geometrical clusters for the two-dimensional Ising model. By means of Monte Carlo simulations and a finite-size scaling analysis we discuss the appearance of corrections to scaling for different definitions of cluster sets. We find that including all percolating clusters, or excluding only clusters that percolate in one but not the other direction, leads to smaller corrections to scaling for the average cluster size as compared to the other definitions considered. The percolation strength is less sensitive to the defi…
Phase transitions of the mixed spin-1/2 and spin-1 Ising-Heisenberg model on several decorated planar lattices consisting of interconnected diamonds are investigated within the framework of the generalized decoration-iteration transformation. The main attention is paid to the systematic study of the finite-temperature phase diagrams in dependence on the lattice topology. The critical behaviour of the hybrid quantum-classical Ising-Heisenberg model is compared with the relevant behaviour of its semi-classical Ising analogue. It is shown that both models on diamond-like decorated planar lattices…
In this work we study the two and three-dimensional antiferromagnetic Ising model with an imaginary magnetic field $iθ$ at $θ=π$. In order to perform numerical simulations of the system we introduce a new geometric algorithm not affected by the sign problem. Our results for the $2D$ model are in agreement with the analytical solutions. We also present new results for the $3D$ model which are qualitatively in agreement with mean-field predictions.
We discuss an Ising spin glass where each $S=1/2$ spin is coupled antiferromagnetically to three other spins (3-regular graphs). Inducing quantum fluctuations by a time-dependent transverse field, we use out-of-equilibrium quantum Monte Carlo simulations to study dynamic scaling at the quantum glass transition. Comparing the dynamic exponent and other critical exponents with those of the classical (temperature-driven) transition, we conclude that quantum annealing is less efficient than classical simulated annealing in bringing the system into the glass phase. Quantum computing based on the qu…
Monte Carlo investigations of magnetization versus field, $M_c(H)$, at the critical temperature provide direct accurate results on the critical exponent $δ^{-1}$ for one, two, three and four-dimensional lattices: $δ_{1D}^{-1}$=0, $δ_{2D}^{-1}$=0.0666(2)$\simeq$1/15, $δ_{3D}^{-1}$=0.1997(4)$\simeq$1/5, $δ_{4D}^{-1}$=0.332(5)$\simeq$1/3. This type of Monte Carlo data on $δ$, which is not easily found in studies of Ising lattices in the current literature, as far as we know, defines extremely well the numerical value of this exponent within very stringent limits.
The fractal dimensions and the percolation exponents of the geometrical spin clusters of like sign at criticality, are obtained numerically for an Ising model with temperature-dependent annealed bond dilution, also known as the thermalized bond Ising model (TBIM), in two dimensions. For this purpose, a modified Wolff single-cluster Monte Carlo simulation is used to generate equilibrium spin configurations on square lattices in the critical region. A tie-breaking rule is employed to identify non-intersecting spin cluster boundaries along the edges of the dual lattice. The values obtained for th…
Based on the quaternionic approach developed by one of us [Z.D. Zhang, Phil. Mag. 87 (2007) 5309.] for the three-dimensional (3D) Ising model, we study in this work conformal invariance in three dimensions. We develop a procedure for treating the 3D conformal field theory. The 2D conformal field theory is generalized to be appropriate for three dimensions, within the framework of quaternionic coordinates with complex weights. The Virasoro algebra still works, but for each complex plane of quaternionic coordinates. The quaternionic geometric phases appear in quaternionic Hilbert space as a resu…
We consider geometrical clusters (i.e. domains of parallel spins) in the square lattice random field Ising model by varying the strength of the Gaussian random field, $Δ$. In agreement with the conclusion of previous investigation (Phys. Rev. E{\bf 63}, 066109 (2001)), the geometrical correlation length, i.e. the average size of the clusters, $ξ$, is finite for $Δ> Δ_c \approx 1.65$ and divergent for $Δ\le Δ_c$. The scaling function of the distribution of the mass of the clusters as well as the geometrical correlation function are found to involve the scaling exponents of critical percolation.…
The entanglement between spin-1/2 interstitial Heisenberg dimers in the mixed spin-(1,1/2) Ising-XXZ double sawtooth ladder is investigated at low temperature. Here, we consider a cyclic four-spin exchange interaction in square plaquette of each block, and investigate the effects of this amazing interaction on the bipartite entanglement between spin-1/2 interstitial dimers. Interestingly, we observe a remarkable difference in concurrence behavior with respect to the cyclic four-spin exchange interaction and magnetic field. Also, the critical points at which the concurrence vanishes are changed…
The critical behaviour of the Ising model in the absence of an external magnetic field can be specified either through spontaneous symmetry breaking (thermal criticality) or through cluster percolation (geometric criticality). We extend this to finite external fields for the case of the Potts' model, showing that a geometric analysis leads to the same first order/second order structure as found in thermodynamic studies. We calculate the Kertész line, separating percolating and non-percolating regimes, both analytically and numerically for the Potts model in presence of an external magnetic fie…
We investigate the critical behaviour of the two-dimensional Ising model defined on a curved surface with a constant negative curvature. Finite-size scaling analysis reveals that the critical exponents for the zero-field magnetic susceptibility and the correlation length deviate from those for the Ising lattice model on a flat plane. Furthermore, when reducing the effects of boundary spins, the values of the critical exponents tend to those derived from the mean field theory. These findings evidence that the underlying geometric character is responsible for the critical properties the Ising mo…
We propose a modified metric based on the Hilbert-Schmidt norm and adopt it to define a rescaled version of the geometric measure of quantum discord. Such a measure is found not to suffer from the pathological dependence on state purity. Although the employed metric is still noncontractive under quantum operations, we show that the resulting indicator of quantum correlations is in agreement with other bona fide discord measures in a number of physical examples. We present a critical assessment of the requirements of reliability versus computability when approaching the task of quantifying, or …
We study the continuum scaling limit of the critical Ising magnetization in two dimensions. We prove the existence of subsequential limits, discuss connections with the scaling limit of critical FK clusters, and describe work in progress of the author with C. Garban and C.M. Newman.
In this paper we present a study of the effects of two different single-ion anisotropies in the phase diagram and in the compensation temperature of the mixed spin-2 and spin-5/2 Ising ferrimagnetic system. We employed the mean-field theory based on the Bogoliubov inequality for the Gibbs free energy. Also we found the Landau expansion of the free energy in the order parameter to describe the phase diagrams. In the plane critical temperature versus single-ion anisotropie the phase diagram displays tricritical behavior. The critical and compensation temperatures increase when the single-ion ani…
A measure of cluster size heterogeneity ($H$), introduced by Lee et al [Phys. Rev. E {\bf 84}, 020101 (2011)] in the context of explosive percolation, was recently applied to random percolation and to domains of parallel spins in the Ising and Potts models. It is defined as the average number of different domain sizes in a given configuration and a new exponent was introduced to explain its scaling with the size of the system. In thermal spin models, however, physical clusters take into account the temperature-dependent correlation between neighboring spins and encode the critical properties o…
An Ising model with ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor interactions $J_{1}$ ($J_{1}>0$) and random next-nearest-neighbor interactions [$+J_{2}$ with probability $p$ and $-J_{2}$ with probability $(1-p)$; $J_{2}>0$] is studied within the framework of an effective-field theory based on the differential-operator technique. The order parameters are calculated, considering finite clusters with $n=1,2, {\rm and} 4$ spins, using the standard approximation of neglecting correlations. A phase diagram is obtained in the plane temperature versus $p$, for the particular case $J_{1}=J_{2}$, showing both supera…

Here we consider the Ising-Heisenberg model in the expanded Kagomé lattice, also known as triangle-dodecagon (3-12) or star lattice. This model can still be understood as a decorated honeycomb lattice. Assuming that the Heisenberg spins are at the vertices of the triangle while other spins are of the Ising type. Thus, this model is equivalent to an effective Kagomé Ising lattice, through the decoration transformation technique. Thus this means that the model is exactly solvable so we can study the most relevant properties of this model. Like the phase diagram at zero temperature, exhibiting a …
The role of the geometric fluctuations on the multifractal properties of the local magnetization of aperiodic ferromagnetic Ising models on hierachical lattices is investigated. The geometric fluctuations are introduced by generalized Fibonacci sequences. The local magnetization is evaluated via an exact recurrent procedure encompassing a real space renormalization group decimation. The symmetries of the local magnetization patterns induced by the aperiodic couplings is found to be strongly (weakly) different, with respect to the ones of the corresponding homogeneous systems, when the geometri…
By utilizing the effective-field theory based on the Glauber-type stochastic dynamics, the dynamic behaviors of the hexagonal Ising nanowire (HIN) system in the presence of a time dependent magnetic field are obtained. The time variations of average order parameters and the thermal behavior of the dynamic order parameters are studied to analyze the nature of transitions and to obtain the dynamic phase transition points. The dynamic phase diagrams are introduced in the plane of the reduced temperature versus magnetic field amplitude. The dynamic phase diagrams exhibit coexistence phase region, …
Thermodynamic and magnetocaloric properties of geometrically frustrated Ising spin clusters of selected shapes and sizes are studied by exact enumeration. In the ground state the magnetization and the entropy show step-wise variations with an applied magnetic field. The number of steps, their widths and heights depend on the cluster shape and size. While the character of the magnetization plateau heights is always increasing, the entropy is not necessarily decreasing function of the field, as one would expect. For selected clusters showing some interesting ground-state properties, the calculat…
Magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of geometrically frustrated antiferromagnetic Ising (IA) and ferromagnetic spin ice (SI) models on a nanocluster with a `Star of David' topology, including next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) interactions, are studied by an exact enumeration. In an external field applied in characteristic directions of the respective models, depending on the NNN interaction sign and magnitude, the ground state magnetization of the IA model is found to display up to three intermediate plateaus at fractional values of the saturation magnetization, while the SI model shows only one …
For the one-dimensional Ising chain with spin-$1/2$ and exchange couple $J$ in a steady transverse field(TF), an analytical theory has well been developed in terms of some topological order parameters such as Berry phase(BP). For a TF Ising chain, the nonzero BP which depends on the exchange couple and the field strength characterizes the corresponding symmetry breaking of parity and time reversal(PT). However, there seems to exist a topological phase transition for the one-dimensional Ising chain in a longitudinal field(LF) with the reduced field strength $ε$. If the LF is added at zero tempe…
Ground-state and finite-temperature properties of the mixed spin-1/2 and spin-S Ising-Heisenberg diamond chains are examined within an exact analytical approach based on the generalized decoration-iteration map. A particular emphasis is laid on the investigation of the effect of geometric frustration, which is generated by the competition between Heisenberg- and Ising-type exchange interactions. It is found that an interplay between the geometric frustration and quantum effects gives rise to several quantum ground states with entangled spin states in addition to some semi-classically ordered o…
We study the geometrical entanglement of the XXZ chain in its critical regime. Recent numerical simulations [Q.-Q. Shi, R. Orús, J. O. Fjærestad and H.-Q Zhou, New J. Phys. {\bf 12}, 025008 (2010)] indicate that it scales linearly with system size, and that the first subleading correction is constant, which was argued to be possibly universal. In this work, we confirm the universality of this number, by relating it to the Affleck-Ludwig boundary entropy corresponding to a Neumann boundary condition for a free compactified field. We find that the subleading constant is a simple function of the …
Magnetization process and adiabatic demagnetization of the antiferromagnetic Ising spin clusters with the shape of regular polyhedra (Platonic solids) are exactly examined within the framework of a simple graph-theoretical approach. While the Ising cube as the only unfrustrated (bipartite) spin cluster shows just one trivial plateau at zero magnetization, the other regular Ising polyhedra (tetrahedron, octahedron, icosahedron and dodecahedron) additionally display either one or two intermediate plateaux at fractional values of the saturation magnetization. The nature of highly degenerate groun…
The dynamic magnetic behaviors of the spin-1 Blume-Capel Ising bilayer system (BCIS) are studied in an oscillating external magnetic field on a two-layer square lattice by utilizing the mean field theory based on Glauber-type stochastic dynamics (DMFT). The dynamic equations describing the time-dependencies of the average magnetizations are obtained with the Master equation. The dynamic phases in this system are found by solving these dynamic equations. The temperature dependence of the dynamic order parameters is examined to characterize the nature (continuous or discontinuous) of the phase t…
Magnetic behaviour of a mixed spin-1/2 and spin-1 Ising model on the diced lattice is studied by the use of an exact star-triangle mapping transformation. It is found that the uniaxial as well as biaxial single-ion anisotropy acting on the spin-1 sites may potentially cause a reentrant transition with two consecutive critical points. Contrary to this, the effect of next-nearest-neighbour interaction between the spin-1/2 sites possibly leads to a reentrant transition with three critical temperatures in addition to the one with two critical points only. The shape of the total magnetization versu…
We implement a two-stage approach of the Wang-Landau algorithm to investigate the critical properties of the 3D Ising model with quenched bond randomness. In particular, we consider the case where disorder couples to the nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic interaction, in terms of a bimodal distribution of strong versus weak bonds. Our simulations are carried out for large ensembles of disorder realizations and lattices with linear sizes $L$ in the range $L=8-64$. We apply well-established finite-size scaling techniques and concepts from the scaling theory of disordered systems to describe the natu…
Recently, Heim, Ronnow, Isakov and Troyer [Science 348 (2015) 215] have reported that Monte Carlo simulations for the Ising spin glass model on the square lattice in the physically relevant continuous-imaginary-time limit do not show superiority of quantum annealing (QA) using transverse field against classical annealing (CA). Although the QA schedule that they had used has been using conventionally, however the QA schedule mathematically has no guarantee that the used schedule is the best QA schedule for performance of optimization. We propose a new QA schedule for studying transverse-field-b…
The quantum entanglement $E$ of a bipartite quantum Ising chain is compared with the mutual information $I$ between the two parts after a local measurement of the classical spin configuration. As the model is conformally invariant, the entanglement measured in its ground state at the critical point is known to obey a certain scaling form. Surprisingly, the mutual information of classical spin configurations is found to obey the same scaling form, although with a different prefactor. Moreover, we find that mutual information and the entanglement obey the inequality $I\leq E$ in the ground state…
Numerical simulations by Tanaka and coworkers indicate that glass forming systems of moderately polydisperse hard-core particles, in both two and three dimensions, exhibit diverging correlation lengths. These correlations are described by Ising-like critical exponents, and are associated with diverging, Vogel-Fulcher-Tamann, structural relaxation times. Related simulations of thermalized hard disks indicate that the curves of pressure versus packing fraction for different polydispersities exhibit a sequence of transition points, starting with a liquid-hexatic transition for the monodisperse ca…
