A measure of cluster size heterogeneity ($H$), introduced by Lee et al [Phys. Rev. E {\bf 84}, 020101 (2011)] in the context of explosive percolation, was recently applied to random percolation and to domains of parallel spins in the Ising and Potts models. It is defined as the average number of different domain sizes in a given configuration and a new exponent was introduced to explain its scaling with the size of the system. In thermal spin models, however, physical clusters take into account the temperature-dependent correlation between neighboring spins and encode the critical properties of the phase transition. We here extend the measure of $H$ to these clusters and, moreover, present new results for the geometric domains for both $d=2$ and 3. We show that the heterogeneity associated with geometric domains has a previously unnoticed double peak, thus being able to detect both the thermal and percolative transition. An alternative interpretation for the scaling of $H$ that does not introduce a new exponent is also proposed.
In a recent paper [P. Mayer et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 115701 (2004)] it was shown, by means of experiments, theory and simulations, that coarsening systems display dynamic heterogeneity analogous to that of glass formers. Here, we present a detailed analysis of dynamic heterogeneities in the Glauber-Ising chain. We discuss how dynamic heterogeneity in Ising systems must be measured through connected multi-point correlation functions. We show that in the coarsening regime of the Ising chain these multi-point functions reveal the growth of spatial correlations in the dynamics, beyond what can…
We numerically investigate the heterogeneity in cluster sizes in the two-dimensional Ising model and verify its scaling form recently proposed in the context of percolation problems [Phys. Rev. E 84, 010101(R) (2011)]. The scaling exponents obtained via the finite-size scaling analysis are shown to be consistent with theoretical values of the fractal dimension $d_f$ and the Fisher exponent $τ$ for the cluster distribution. We also point out that strong finite-size effects exist due to the geometric nature of the cluster-size heterogeneity.
We discuss a geometrical interpretation of the Z-invariant Ising model in terms of isoradial embeddings of planar lattices. The Z-invariant Ising model can be defined on an arbitrary planar lattice if and only if certain paths on the lattice edges do not intersect each other more than once or self-intersect. This topological constraint is equivalent to the existence of isoradial embeddings of the lattice. Such embeddings are characterized by angles which can be related to the model coupling constants in the spirit of Baxter's geometrical solution. The Ising model on isoradial embeddings studie…
Ground-state phase diagram of the mixed spin-1/2 and spin-1 Ising-Heisenberg model on doubly decorated planar lattices is examined using the generalized decoration-iteration transformation. The main attention is devoted to the comparison of the ground-state properties of the quantum Ising-Heisenberg model and its semi-classical Ising analogue.
We investigate the nucleation of Ising model on complex networks and focus on the role played by the heterogeneity of degree distribution on nucleation rate. Using Monte Carlo simulation combined with forward flux sampling, we find that for a weak external field the nucleation rate decreases monotonically as degree heterogeneity increases. Interestingly, for a relatively strong external field the nucleation rate exhibits a nonmonotonic dependence on degree heterogeneity, in which there exists a maximal nucleation rate at an intermediate level of degree heterogeneity. Furthermore, we develop a …
We study the scaling of the average cluster size and percolation strength of geometrical clusters for the two-dimensional Ising model. By means of Monte Carlo simulations and a finite-size scaling analysis we discuss the appearance of corrections to scaling for different definitions of cluster sets. We find that including all percolating clusters, or excluding only clusters that percolate in one but not the other direction, leads to smaller corrections to scaling for the average cluster size as compared to the other definitions considered. The percolation strength is less sensitive to the defi…
Phase transitions of the mixed spin-1/2 and spin-1 Ising-Heisenberg model on several decorated planar lattices consisting of interconnected diamonds are investigated within the framework of the generalized decoration-iteration transformation. The main attention is paid to the systematic study of the finite-temperature phase diagrams in dependence on the lattice topology. The critical behaviour of the hybrid quantum-classical Ising-Heisenberg model is compared with the relevant behaviour of its semi-classical Ising analogue. It is shown that both models on diamond-like decorated planar lattices…
Thermodynamic and magnetocaloric properties of geometrically frustrated Ising spin clusters of selected shapes and sizes are studied by exact enumeration. In the ground state the magnetization and the entropy show step-wise variations with an applied magnetic field. The number of steps, their widths and heights depend on the cluster shape and size. While the character of the magnetization plateau heights is always increasing, the entropy is not necessarily decreasing function of the field, as one would expect. For selected clusters showing some interesting ground-state properties, the calculat…
Magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of geometrically frustrated antiferromagnetic Ising (IA) and ferromagnetic spin ice (SI) models on a nanocluster with a `Star of David' topology, including next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) interactions, are studied by an exact enumeration. In an external field applied in characteristic directions of the respective models, depending on the NNN interaction sign and magnitude, the ground state magnetization of the IA model is found to display up to three intermediate plateaus at fractional values of the saturation magnetization, while the SI model shows only one …
Here we consider the Ising-Heisenberg model in the expanded Kagomé lattice, also known as triangle-dodecagon (3-12) or star lattice. This model can still be understood as a decorated honeycomb lattice. Assuming that the Heisenberg spins are at the vertices of the triangle while other spins are of the Ising type. Thus, this model is equivalent to an effective Kagomé Ising lattice, through the decoration transformation technique. Thus this means that the model is exactly solvable so we can study the most relevant properties of this model. Like the phase diagram at zero temperature, exhibiting a …
We consider geometrical clusters (i.e. domains of parallel spins) in the square lattice random field Ising model by varying the strength of the Gaussian random field, $Δ$. In agreement with the conclusion of previous investigation (Phys. Rev. E{\bf 63}, 066109 (2001)), the geometrical correlation length, i.e. the average size of the clusters, $ξ$, is finite for $Δ> Δ_c \approx 1.65$ and divergent for $Δ\le Δ_c$. The scaling function of the distribution of the mass of the clusters as well as the geometrical correlation function are found to involve the scaling exponents of critical percolation.…
The fractal dimensions and the percolation exponents of the geometrical spin clusters of like sign at criticality, are obtained numerically for an Ising model with temperature-dependent annealed bond dilution, also known as the thermalized bond Ising model (TBIM), in two dimensions. For this purpose, a modified Wolff single-cluster Monte Carlo simulation is used to generate equilibrium spin configurations on square lattices in the critical region. A tie-breaking rule is employed to identify non-intersecting spin cluster boundaries along the edges of the dual lattice. The values obtained for th…
Spanning avalanches in the 3D Gaussian Random Field Ising Model (3D-GRFIM) with metastable dynamics at T=0 have been studied. Statistical analysis of the field values for which avalanches occur has enabled a Finite-Size Scaling (FSS) study of the avalanche density to be performed. Furthermore, direct measurement of the geometrical properties of the avalanches has confirmed an earlier hypothesis that several kinds of spanning avalanches with two different fractal dimensions coexist at the critical point. We finally compare the phase diagram of the 3D-GRFIM with metastable dynamics with the same…
The study of frustrated spin systems often requires time-consuming numerical simulations. As the simplest approach, the classical Ising model is often used to investigate the thermodynamic behavior of such systems. Exploiting the small correlation lengths in frustrated Ising systems, we develop a method for obtaining a first approximation to the energetic properties of frustrated two-dimensional Ising systems using small networks of less than 30 spins. These small networks allow much faster numerical simulations, and more importantly, analytical calculation of the properties from the partition…
We study a two dimensional Ising model between thermostats at different temperatures. By applying the recently introduced KQ dynamics, we show that the system reaches a steady state with coexisting phases transversal to the heat flow. The relevance of such complex states on thermodynamic or geometrical observables is investigated. In particular, we study energy, magnetization and metric properties of interfaces and clusters which, in principle, are sensitive to local features of configurations. With respect to equilibrium states, the presence of the heat flow amplifies the fluctuations of both…
In this paper we propose the Ising model to study the propagation of water in 2 dimensional (2D) petroleum reservoir in which each bond between its pores has the probability $p$ of being activated. We analyze the water movement pattern in porous media described by Darcy equations by focusing on its geometrical objects. Using Schramm-Loewner evolution (SLE) technique we numerically show that at $p=p_c\simeq 0.59$, this model lies within the Ising universality class with the diffusivity parameter $κ=3$ and the fractal dimension $D_f=\frac{11}{8}$. We introduce a self-organized critical model in …
The geometric frustration of the spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on the triangulated Kagome (triangles-in-triangles) lattice is investigated within the framework of an exact analytical method based on the generalized star-triangle mapping transformation. Ground-state and finite-temperature phase diagrams are obtained along with other exact results for the partition function, Helmholtz free energy, internal energy, entropy, and specific heat, by establishing a precise mapping relationship to the corresponding spin-1/2 Ising model on the Kagome lattice. It is shown that the residual entropy of t…
The coupling of the $c=-2$, $c=\frac{1}{2}$ and $c=0$ conformal field theories are numerically considered in this paper. As the prototypes of the couplings, $(c_1=-2)\oplus (c_2=0)$ and $(c_1=-2)\oplus (c_2=\frac{1}{2})$, we consider the BTW model on the 2D square critical site-percolation and the BTW model on Ising-correlated percolation lattices respectively. Some geometrical techniques are used to characterize the presumable conformal symmetry of the resultant systems. Using the Schramm-Loewrner evolution (SLE), we find that the algebra of the central charges of the coupled models is closed…
Magnetization processes and phase transitions in a geometrically frustrated triangular lattice Ising antiferromagnet in the presence of an external magnetic field and a random site dilution are studied by the use of an effective-field theory with correlations. We find that the interplay between the applied field and the frustration-relieving dilution results in peculiar phase diagrams in the temperature-field-dilution parameter space.
We study the dynamical percolation transition of the geometrical clusters in the two-dimensional Ising model when it is subjected to a pulsed field below the critical temperature. The critical exponents are independent of the temperature and pulse width and are different from the (static) percolation transition associated with the thermal transition. For a different model that belongs to the Ising universality class, the exponents are found to be same, confirming that the behavior is a common feature of the Ising class. These observations, along with a universal critical Binder cumulant value,…
The fractal structure of spin clusters and their boundaries in the critical two-dimensional (2D) Ising model is investigated numerically. The fractal dimensions of these geometrical objects are estimated by means of Monte Carlo simulations on relatively small lattices through standard finite-size scaling. The obtained results are in excellent agreement with theoretical predictions and partly provide significant improvements in precision over existing numerical estimates.
We study the phase diagram of a topological string-net type lattice model in the presence of geometrically frustrated interactions. These interactions drive several phase transitions that reduce the topological order, leading to a rich phase diagram including both Abelian ($\mathbb{Z}_2$) and non-Abelian ($\text{Ising}\times \overline{\text{Ising}}$) topologically ordered phases, as well as phases with broken translational symmetry. Interestingly, one of these phases simultaneously exhibits (Abelian) topological order and long-ranged order due to translational symmetry breaking, with non-trivi…
Magnetization process and adiabatic demagnetization of the antiferromagnetic Ising spin clusters with the shape of regular polyhedra (Platonic solids) are exactly examined within the framework of a simple graph-theoretical approach. While the Ising cube as the only unfrustrated (bipartite) spin cluster shows just one trivial plateau at zero magnetization, the other regular Ising polyhedra (tetrahedron, octahedron, icosahedron and dodecahedron) additionally display either one or two intermediate plateaux at fractional values of the saturation magnetization. The nature of highly degenerate groun…
Magnetization process of the mixed spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 Ising-Heisenberg diamond chain is examined by combining three exact analytical techniques: Kambe projection method, decoration-iteration transformation and transfer-matrix method. Multiple frustration-induced plateaus in a magnetization process of this geometrically frustrated system are found provided that a relative ratio between the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg- and Ising-type interactions exceeds some particular value. By contrast, there is just a single magnetization plateau if the frustrating Heisenberg interaction is sufficiently …
We present a comprehensive study of non-equilibrium phenomena in the low temperature phase of the Edwards-Anderson Gaussian spin glass in 3 and 4 spatial dimensions. Many effects can be understood in terms of a time dependent coherence length, $\ell_T$, such that length scales smaller that $\ell_T$ are equilibrated, whereas larger length scales are essentially frozen. The time and temperature dependence of $\ell_T$ is found to be compatible with critical power-law dynamical scaling for small times/high temperatures, crossing over to an activated logarithmic growth for longer times/lower temper…
We study the early time dynamics of bimodal spin systems on $2d$ lattices evolving with different microscopic stochastic updates. We treat the ferromagnetic Ising model with locally conserved order parameter (Kawasaki dynamics), the same model with globally conserved order parameter (nonlocal spin exchanges), and the voter model. As already observed for non-conserved order parameter dynamics (Glauber dynamics), in all the cases in which the stochastic dynamics satisfy detailed balance, the critical percolation state persists over a long period of time before usual coarsening of domains takes o…
We present measurements of the fractal dimensions associated to the geometrical clusters for Z_4 and Z_5 spin models. We also attempted to measure similar fractal dimensions for the generalised Fortuyin Kastelyn (FK) clusters in these models but we discovered that these clusters do not percolate at the critical point of the model under consideration. These results clearly mark a difference in the behaviour of these non local objects compared to the Ising model or the 3-state Potts model which corresponds to the simplest cases of Z_N spin models with N=2 and N=3 respectively. We compare these f…
The geometrically frustrated spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on triangulated Husimi lattices is exactly solved by combining the generalized star-triangle transformation with the method of exact recursion relations. The ground-state and finite-temperature phase diagrams are rigorously calculated along with both sublattice magnetizations of the Ising and Heisenberg spins. It is evidenced that the Ising-Heisenberg model on triangulated Husimi lattices with two or three inter-connected triangles-in-triangles units displays in a highly frustrated region a quantum disorder irrespective of temperatur…
Perhaps the most iconic feature of melting Arctic sea ice is the formation of distinctive, complex ponds on its surface during late spring. The evolution of melt ponds and their geometrical characteristics determines the albedo of sea ice, a key parameter in climate modeling. However, a theoretical understanding of this evolution, and predictions of geometrical features, have remained elusive. To address this fundamental problem in polar climate science, here we introduce a two dimensional random field Ising model for melt ponds. The ponds are identified as metastable states of the system, whe…
We employ a thermodynamic integration method (TIM) to establish the values of the residual entropy for the geometrically frustrated spin-s triangular Ising antiferromagnet, with the spin values s = 1/2, 1, 3/2, 2 and 5/2. The case of s = 1/2, for which the exact value is known, is used to assess the TIM performance. We also obtain an analytical formula for the lower bound in a general spin-s model and conjecture that it should reasonably approximate the true residual entropy for sufficiently large $s$. Implications of the present results in relation to reliability of the TIM as an indirect met…
We employ Monte Carlo simulations in order to investigate critical behavior of a geometrically frustrated spin-1 Ising antiferromagnet on a triangular lattice in the presence of a single-ion anisotropy. It has been previously found that long-range order can exist in the isotropic system with a spin larger than some critical value estimated as 11/2. We show that the presence of the single-ion anisotropy can lead to a partial long-range order in the low-temperature region even below this critical value, namely for the spin 1, within a certain range of the anisotropy strength. At higher temperatu…
We study the geometrical entanglement of the XXZ chain in its critical regime. Recent numerical simulations [Q.-Q. Shi, R. Orús, J. O. Fjærestad and H.-Q Zhou, New J. Phys. {\bf 12}, 025008 (2010)] indicate that it scales linearly with system size, and that the first subleading correction is constant, which was argued to be possibly universal. In this work, we confirm the universality of this number, by relating it to the Affleck-Ludwig boundary entropy corresponding to a Neumann boundary condition for a free compactified field. We find that the subleading constant is a simple function of the …
The coverage of vicinal, stepped surfaces with molecules is simulated with the help of a two-dimensional Ising model including local distortions and an Ehrlich-Schwoebel barrier term at the steps. An effective two-spin model is capable to describe the main properties of this distorted Ising model. It is employed to analyze the behavior of the system close to the critical points. Within a well-defined regime of bonding strengths and Ehrlich-Schwoebel barriers we find a reduction of coverage (magnetization) at low temperatures due to the presence of the surface step. This results in a second, lo…
The tricritical behavior of the two-dimensional $q$-state Potts model with vacancies for $1\leq q \leq4$ is argued to be encoded in the fractal structure of the geometrical spin clusters of the pure model. The close connection between the critical properties of the pure model and the tricritical properties of the diluted model is shown to be reflected in an intimate relation between Fortuin-Kasteleyn and geometrical clusters: The same transformation mapping the two critical regimes onto each other also maps the two cluster types onto each other. The map conserves the central charge, so that bo…
We study a geometrically frustrated triangular Ising antiferromagnet in an external magnetic field which is selectively diluted with nonmagnetic impurities employing an effective-field theory with correlations and Monte Carlo simulations. We focus on the frustration-relieving effects of such a selective dilution on the phase diagram and find that it can lead to rather intricate phase diagrams in the dilution-field parameters space. In particular, in a highly (weakly) diluted system the frustration is greatly (little) relieved and such a system is found to display only the second(first)-order p…
This work considers an Ising model on the Apollonian network, where the exchange constant $J_{i,j}\sim1/(k_ik_j)^μ$ between two neighboring spins $(i,j)$ is a function of the degree $k$ of both spins. Using the exact geometrical construction rule for the network, the thermodynamical and magnetic properties are evaluated by iterating a system of discrete maps that allows for very precise results in the thermodynamic limit. The results can be compared to the predictions of a general framework for spins models on scale-free networks, where the node distribution $P(k)\sim k^{-γ}$, with node depend…
Ground-state and finite-temperature phase diagrams of a geometrically frustrated spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on a triangle-hexagon lattice are investigated within the generalized star-triangle mapping transformation. It is shown that the ground state is constituted by two different spontaneously long-range ordered phases and one disordered spin-liquid phase.
A cluster Monte Carlo method for systems of classical spins with purely dipolar couplings is presented. It is tested and applied for finite arrays of perpendicular Ising dipoles on the triangular lattice. This model is a modification with long-range interactions of the geometrically frustrated Ising antiferromagnet. From measurements of integrated autocorrelation times for energy, magnetization and staggered magnetizations, a high efficiency of the cluster Monte Carlo (MC) algorithm compared to a single-spin-flip algorithm is found. For the investigated model, a finite temperature transition i…
We study thermodynamic properties of an antiferromagnetic Ising model on the inverse perovskite lattice by using Monte Carlo simulations. The lattice structure is composed of corner-sharing octahedra and contains three-dimensional geometrical frustration in terms of magnetic interactions. The system with the nearest-neighbor interactions alone does not exhibit any phase transition, leading to a degenerate ground state with large residual entropy. The degeneracy is lifted by an external magnetic field or by an anisotropy in the interactions. Depending on the anisotropy, they stabilize either a …
We report an effective functional form for the spin-spin correlation function of the 2D Ising model as a function of temperature and field. Although the Ising model has been well studied, no analytical result for the spin-spin correlation function exists for arbitrary magnetic fields and temperatures. We show the validity of our form by comparison with simulations using the Wolff algorithm, and obtain remarkable precision by including analytic corrections to scaling. Given recent interest in comparing biomembrane heterogeneity to Ising criticality, our spin-spin correlation function may be use…
Ground state and thermodynamics of geometrically frustrated spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on two different but topologically related triangles-in-triangles lattices is investigated in particular. A rigorous mapping based on generalized star-triangle transformations enables one to derive exact analytical results for the free and internal energy, spontaneous magnetization, entropy and specific heat from the known exact results for the corresponding spin-1/2 Ising model on a triangular lattice. It is demonstrated that several unconventional quantum ordered and disordered phases may become the g…
One-dimensional systems---ranging from travelling light to circuit cables and from DNA to superstrings---are ubiquitous and critically important to the human knowledge of the universe. However, our engagement with one-dimensional systems in the research and education of spontaneous phase transitions, the phenomena wherein materials can change rapidly between different phases (e.g., gas, liquid, solid, etc.) on their own, has not been largely exercised, since it was proven that one-dimensional systems do not contain phase transitions in the textbook Ising model almost 100 years ago [1] and its …
We study the role of the quench temperature $T_f$ in the phase-ordering kinetics of the Ising model with single spin flip in $d=2,3$. Equilibrium interfaces are flat at $T_f=0$, whereas at $T_f>0$ they are curved and rough (above the roughening temperature in $d=3$). We show, by means of scaling arguments and numerical simulations, that this geometrical difference is important for the phase-ordering kinetics as well. In particular, while the growth exponent $z=2$ of the size of domains $L(t)\sim t^{1/z}$ is unaffected by $T_f$, other exponents related to the interface geometry take different v…
Mixed spin-1/2 and spin-1 Ising ferrimagnets on a triangular lattice with sublattices A, B and C are studied for two spin value distributions $(S_{\rm A},S_{\rm B},S_{\rm C})=(1/2,1/2,1)$ and $(1/2,1,1)$ by Monte Carlo simulations. The non-bipartite character of the lattice induces geometrical frustration in both systems, which leads to the critical behavior rather different from their ferromagnetic counterparts. We confirm second-order phase transitions belonging to the standard Ising universality class occurring at higher temperatures, however, in both models these change at tricritical poin…
The size distribution of geometrical spin clusters is exactly found for the one dimensional Ising model of finite extent. For the values of lattice constant $β$ above some "critical value" $β_c$ the found size distribution demonstrates the non-monotonic behavior with the peak corresponding to the size of largest available cluster. In other words, at high values of lattice constant there are two ways to fill the lattice: either to form a single largest cluster or to create many clusters of small sizes. This feature closely resembles the well-know bimodal size distribution of clusters which is u…
The dynamical percolation transition of two dimensional Axial Next Nearest Neighbour Ising (ANNNI) model to pulsed magnetic field has been studied by finite size scaling analysis (by Monte Carlo simulation) for various values of frustration parameters, pulse width and temperature (below the corresponding static transition temperature). It has been found that the size of the largest geometrical cluster shows a transition for a critical field amplitude. Although the transition points shift, the critical exponents remain invariant for a wide range of frustration parameters. It is also same as tha…

Environmental heterogeneity can drive genetic heterogeneity in expanding populations; mutant strains may emerge that trade overall growth rate for an improved ability to survive in patches that are hostile to the wild type. This evolutionary dynamic is of practical importance when seeking to prevent the emergence of damaging traits. We show that a sub-critical slow-spreading mutant can attain dominance even when the density of patches is below their percolation threshold and predict this transition using geometrical arguments. This work demonstrates a phenomenon of ''assisted percolation'', wh…
The concept of geometrical frustration in condensed matter physics refers to the fact that a system has a locally preferred structure with an energy density lower than the infinite ground state. This notion is however often used in a qualitative sense only. In this article, we discuss a quantitative definition of geometrical frustration in the context of lattice models of binary spins. To this aim, we introduce the framework of local energy landscapes, within which frustration can be quantified as the discrepancy between the energy of locally preferred structures and the ground state. Our defi…
After a sudden quench from the disordered high-temperature $T_0\to\infty$ phase to a final temperature below the critical point $T_F \ll T_c$, the non-conserved order parameter dynamics of the two-dimensional ferromagnetic Ising model on a square lattice (2dIM) initially approaches the critical percolation state before entering the coarsening regime. This approach involves two timescales associated with the first appearance (at time $t_{{\rm p}_1}>0$) and stabilization (at time $t_{\rm p}>t_{{\rm p}_1}$) of a giant percolation cluster, as previously reported. However, the microscopic mechanism…
The spin-1 classical Blume-Capel model on a square lattice is known to exhibit a finite-temperature phase transition described by the tricritical Ising CFT in 1+1 space-time dimensions. This phase transition can be accessed with classical Monte Carlo simulations, which, via a replica-trick calculation, can be used to study the shape-dependence of the classical Rényi entropies for a torus divided into two cylinders. From the second Rényi entropy, we calculate the Geometrical Mutual Information (GMI) introduced by Stéphan et. al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 127204 (2014)] and use it to extract a nume…
An elementary Ising spin model is proposed for demonstrating cascading failures (break-downs, blackouts, collapses, avalanches, ...) that can occur in realistic networks for distribution and delivery by suppliers to consumers. A ferromagnetic Hamiltonian with quenched random fields results from policies that maximize the gap between demand and delivery. Such policies can arise in a competitive market where firms artificially create new demand, or in a solidary environment where too high a demand cannot reasonably be met. Network failure in the context of a policy of solidarity is possible when…
