We study the role of the quench temperature $T_f$ in the phase-ordering kinetics of the Ising model with single spin flip in $d=2,3$. Equilibrium interfaces are flat at $T_f=0$, whereas at $T_f>0$ they are curved and rough (above the roughening temperature in $d=3$). We show, by means of scaling arguments and numerical simulations, that this geometrical difference is important for the phase-ordering kinetics as well. In particular, while the growth exponent $z=2$ of the size of domains $L(t)\sim t^{1/z}$ is unaffected by $T_f$, other exponents related to the interface geometry take different values at $T_f=0$ or $T_f>0$. For $T_f>0$ a crossover phenomenon is observed from an early stage where interfaces are still flat and the system behaves as at $T_f=0$, to the asymptotic regime with curved interfaces characteristic of $T_f>0$. Furthermore, it is shown that the roughening length, although sub-dominant with respect to $L(t)$, produces appreciable correction to scaling up to very long times in $d=2$.
Motivated by recent experiments on (Sr,Ca,La)_14 Cu_24 O_41, a two-dimensional Ising antiferromagnet with mobile, locally pinned and quenched defects is introduced and analysed using mainly Monte Carlo techniques. The interplay between the arrangement of the defects and the magnetic ordering as well as the effect of an external field are studied.
Through large-scale numerical simulations, we study the phase ordering kinetics of the $2d$ Ising Model after a zero-temperature quench from a high-temperature homogeneous initial condition. Analysing the behaviour of two important quantities -- the winding angle and the pair-connectedness -- we reveal the presence of a percolating structure in the pattern of domains. We focus on the pure case and on the random field and random bond Ising Model.
We investigate a kinetic Ising model with several single-spin flip dynamics (including Metropolis and heat-bath) on quenched and annealed random regular graphs. As expected, on the quenched structures all proposed algorithms reproduce the same results since the conditions for the detailed balance and the Boltzmann distribution in an equilibrium are satisfied. However, on the annealed graphs situation is far less clear -- the network annealing disturbs the equilibrium moving the system away from it. Consequently, distinct dynamics lead to different steady states. We show that some algorithms ar…
The universality class, even the order of the transition, of the two-dimensional Ising model depends on the range and the symmetry of the interactions (Onsager model, Baxter-Wu model, Turban model, etc.), but the critical temperature is generally the same due to self-duality. Here we consider a sudden change in the form of the interaction and study the nonequilibrium critical dynamical properties of the nearest-neighbor model. The relaxation of the magnetization and the decay of the autocorrelation function are found to display a power law behavior with characteristic exponents that depend on …
We study the equilibrium properties of an Ising model on a disordered random network where the disorder can be quenched or annealed. The network consists of four-fold coordinated sites connected via variable length one-dimensional chains. Our emphasis is on nonuniversal properties and we consider the transition temperature and other equilibrium thermodynamic properties, including those associated with one dimensional fluctuations arising from the chains. We use analytic methods in the annealed case, and a Monte Carlo simulation for the quenched disorder. Our objective is to study the differenc…
The adaptive Thouless-Anderson-Palmer equation is derived for inverse Ising problems in the presence of quenched random fields. We test the proposed scheme on Sherrington-Kirkpatrick, Hopfield, and random orthogonal models and find that the adaptive Thouless-Anderson-Palmer approach allows surprisingly accurate inference of quenched random fields whose distribution can be either Gaussian or bimodal, compared with other existing mean-field methods.
In systems belonging to the universality class of the random field Ising model, the standard hyperscaling relation between critical exponents does not hold, but is replaced by a modified hyperscaling relation. As a result, standard formulations of finite size scaling near critical points break down. In this work, the consequences of modified hyperscaling are analyzed in detail. The most striking outcome is that the free energy cost ΔF of interface formation at the critical point is no longer a universal constant, but instead increases as a power law with system size, ΔF proportional to $L^θ$, …
We briefly review the Ising model with uncorrelated, quenched random-site or random-bond disorder, which has been controversial in both two and four dimensions. In these dimensions, the leading exponent alpha, which characterizes the specific-heat critical behaviour, vanishes and no Harris prediction for the consequences of quenched disorder can be made. In the two-dimensional case, the controversy is between the strong universality hypothesis which maintains that the leading critical exponents are the same as in the pure case and the weak universality hypothesis, which favours dilution-depend…
We extend to quenched disordered systems the variational scheme for real space renormalization group calculations that we recently introduced for homogeneous spin Hamiltonians. When disorder is present our approach gives access to the flow of the renormalized Hamiltonian distribution, from which one can compute the critical exponents if the correlations of the renormalized couplings retain finite range. Key to the variational approach is the bias potential found by minimizing a convex functional in statistical mechanics. This potential reduces dramatically the Monte Carlo relaxation time in la…
In order to check on a recent suggestion that local scale invariance [M.Henkel et al. Phys.Rev.Lett. {\bf 87}, 265701 (2001)] might hold when the dynamics is of Gaussian nature, we have carried out the measurement of the response function in the kinetic Ising model with Glauber dynamics quenched to $T_C$ in $d=4$, where Gaussian behavior is expected to apply, and in the two other cases of the $d=2$ model quenched to $T_C$ and to below $T_C$, where instead deviations from Gaussian behavior are expected to appear. We find that in the $d=4$ case there is an excellent agreement between the numeric…
We have studied the presence of plateaus on the low-temperature magnetization of an antiferromagnetic spin-1 chain, as an external uniform magnetic field is varied. A crystal-field interaction is present in the model and the exchange constants follow a random quenched (Bernoulli or Gaussian) distribution. Using a transfer-matrix technique we calculate the largest Lyapunov exponent and, from it, the magnetization at low temperatures as a function of the magnetic field, for different values of the crystal-field and of the width of the distributions. For the Bernoulli distribution, the number of …
Frequency evolutions of hysteresis loop area and hysteresis tools such as remanence and coercivity of a kinetic Ising model in the presence of quenched bond dilution are investigated in detail. The kinetic equation describing the time dependence of the magnetization is derived by means of effective-field theory with single-site correlations. It is found that the frequency dispersions of hysteresis loop area, remanence and coercivity strongly depend on the quenched bond randomness, as well as applied field amplitude and oscillation frequency. In addition, the shape of the hysteresis curves for …
We investigate and contrast, via entropic sampling based on the Wang-Landau algorithm, the effects of quenched bond randomness on the critical behavior of two Ising spin models in 2D. The random bond version of the superantiferromagnetic (SAF) square model with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor competing interactions and the corresponding version of the simple Ising model are studied and their general universality aspects are inspected by a detailed finite-size scaling (FSS) analysis. We find that, the random bond SAF model obeys weak universality, hyperscaling, and exhibits a strong saturati…
We study the dynamics of the critical two-dimensional fully-frustrated Ising model by means of Monte Carlo simulations. The dynamical exponent is estimated at equilibrium and is shown to be compatible with the value $z_c=2$. In a second step, the system is prepared in the paramagnetic phase and then quenched at its critical temperature $T_c=0$. Numerical evidences for the existence of logarithmic corrections in the aging regime are presented. These corrections may be related to the topological defects observed in other fully-frustrated models. The autocorrelation exponent is estimated to be $λ…
We report on single-cluster Monte Carlo simulations of the Ising, 4-state Potts and 10-state Potts models on quenched ensembles of planar, tri-valent random graphs. We confirm that the first-order phase transition of the 10-state Potts model on regular 2D lattices is softened by the quenched connectivity disorder represented by the random graphs and that the exponents of the Ising and 4-state Potts models are altered from their regular lattice counterparts. The behaviour of spin models on such graphs is thus more analogous to models with quenched bond disorder than to Poisonnian random lattice…
We present an extensive study of the effects of quenched disorder on the dynamic phase transitions of kinetic spin models in two dimensions. We undertake a numerical experiment performing Monte Carlo simulations of the square-lattice random-bond Ising and Blume-Capel models under a periodically oscillating magnetic field. For the case of the Blume-Capel model we analyze the universality principles of the dynamic disordered-induced continuous transition at the low-temperature regime of the phase diagram. A detailed finite-size scaling analysis indicates that both nonequilibrium phase transition…
We discuss the interplay between the degree of dynamical stochasticity, memory persistence and violation of the self-averaging property in the aging kinetics of quenched ferromagnets. We show that, in general, the longest possible memory effects, which correspond to the slowest possible temporal decay of the correlation function, are accompanied by the largest possible violation of self-averaging and a quasi-deterministic descent into the ergodic components. This phenomenon is observed in different systems, such as the Ising model with long-range interactions, including mean-field, and the sho…
We comment on a recent Letter by Braunstein and Buceta [PRL vol.81, 630 (1998)], in which a novel equation has been proposed to describe the dynamics of interfaces in the presence of quenched disorder. We argue that the ansatz Braunstein and Buceta presented is just an effective description of the very short times regime and has no significance for the macroscopic (large scale) behaviour of the interface. We calculate an expression for the short time behaviour of the interface that is valid for any q (and not only at q_c).
Correlation inequalities have played an essential role in the analysis of ferromagnetic models but have not been established in spin glass models. In this study, we obtain some correlation inequalities for the Ising models with quenched randomness, where the distribution of the interactions is symmetric. The acquired inequalities can be regarded as an extension of the previous results, which were limited to the local energy for a spin set, to the local energy for a pair of spin sets. Besides, we also obtain some correlation inequalities for asymmetric distribution.
We study the two-dimensional Ising model on a network with a novel type of quenched topological (connectivity) disorder. We construct random lattices of constant coordination number and perform large scale Monte Carlo simulations in order to obtain critical exponents using finite-size scaling relations. We find disorder-dependent effective critical exponents, similar to diluted models, showing thus no clear universal behavior. Considering the very recent results for the two-dimensional Ising model on proximity graphs and the coordination number correlation analysis suggested by Barghathi and V…
We present the microscopic equation of growing interface with quenched noise for the Tang and Leschhorn model [L. H. Tang and H. Leschhorn, Phys. Rev. A {\bf 45}, R8309 (1992)]. The evolution equation for the height, the mean height, and the roughness are reached in a simple way. An equation for the interface activity density (or free sites density) as function of time is obtained. The microscopic equation allows us to express these equations into two contributions: the diffusion and the substratum contributions. All these equations shows the strong interplay between the diffusion and the subs…
In this study, we extend the lower bound on the average of the local energy of the Ising model with quenched randomness [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 76, 074711 (2007)] obtained for a symmetric distribution to an asymmetric one. Compared with the case of symmetric distribution, our bound has a non-trivial term. By applying the acquired bound to a Gaussian distribution, we obtain the lower bounds on the expectation of the square of the correlation function. Thus, we demonstrate that in the Ising model in a Gaussian random field, the spin-glass order parameter generally has a finite value at any temperatu…
We investigate by means of Monte Carlo simulations the dynamic phase transition of the two-dimensional kinetic Blume-Capel model under a periodically oscillating magnetic field in the presence of a quenched random crystal-field coupling. We analyze the universality principles of this dynamic transition for various values of the crystal-field coupling at the originally second-order regime of the corresponding equilibrium phase diagram of the model. A detailed finite-size scaling analysis indicates that the observed nonequilibrium phase transition belongs to the universality class of the equilib…
The Ising and BEG models critical behavior is analyzed in 2D and 3D by means of a renormalization group scheme on small clusters made of a few lattice cells. Different kinds of cells are proposed for both ordered and disordered model cases. In particular, cells preserving a possible antiferromagnetic ordering under decimation allow for the determination of the Néel critical point and its scaling indices. These also provide more reliable estimates of the Curie fixed point than those obtained using cells preserving only the ferromagnetic ordering. In all studied dimensions, the present procedure…
We use Glauber dynamics to study frequency and temperature dependence of hysteresis loops in the pure (without quenched disorder) Ising model on cubic, square, honeycomb lattices and random graphs. Results are discussed in the context of more extensive studies of hysteresis in the random field Ising model.
We study with Monte Carlo methods an ensemble of c=-5 gravity graphs, generated by coupling a conformal field theory with central charge c=-5 to two-dimensional quantum gravity. We measure the fractal properties of the ensemble, such as the string susceptibility exponent gamma_s and the intrinsic fractal dimensions d_H. We find gamma_s = -1.5(1) and d_H = 3.36(4), in reasonable agreement with theoretical predictions. In addition, we study the critical behavior of an Ising model on a quenched ensemble of the c=-5 graphs and show that it agrees, within numerical accuracy, with theoretical predic…
The notion of the integral over the anticommuting Grassmann variables is applied to analyze the fermionic structure of the 2D Ising model with quenched site dilution. In the $N$-replica scheme, the model is explicitly reformulated as a theory of interacting fermions on a lattice. For weak dilution, the continuum-limit approximation implies the log-log singularity in the specific heat near $T_c$.
We study the response to sudden local perturbations of highly excited Quantum Ising Spin Chains. The key quantity encoding this response is the overlap between time-dependent wave functions, which we write as a two-times Loschmidt echo. Its asymptotics at long time differences contains crucial information about the structure of the highly excited non-equilibrium environment induced by the quench. We compute the Echo perturbatively for a weak local quench but for arbitrarily large global quench, using a cumulant expansion. Our perturbative results suggest that the Echo decays exponentially, rat…
We study the relaxation for growing interfaces in quenched disordered media. We use a directed percolation depinning model introduced by Tang and Leschhorn for 1+1-dimensions. We define the two-time autocorrelation function of the interface height C(t',t) and its Fourier transform. These functions depend on the difference of times t-t' for long enough times, this is the steady-state regime. We find a two-step relaxation decay in this regime. The long time tail can be fitted by a stretched exponential relaxation function. The relaxation time is proportional to the characteristic distance of the…
With Monte Carlo methods, we investigate the universality class of the depinning transition in the two-dimensional Ising model with quenched random fields. Based on the short-time dynamic approach, we accurately determine the depinning transition field and both static and dynamic critical exponents. The critical exponents vary significantly with the form and strength of the random fields, but exhibit independence on the updating schemes of the Monte Carlo algorithm. From the roughness exponents $ζ, ζ_{loc}$ and $ζ_s$, one may judge that the depinning transition of the random-field Ising model …
We present the microscopic equation of growing interface with quenched noise for the Tang and Leschhorn model [{\em Phys. Rev.} {\bf A 45}, R8309 (1992)]. The evolution equations for the mean heigth and the roughness are reached in a simple way. Also, an equation for the interface activity density (i.e. interface density of free sites) as function of time is obtained. The microscopic equation allows us to express these equations in two contributions: the diffusion and the substratum one. All the equation shows the strong interplay between both contributions in the dynamics. A macroscopic evolu…
Using high-precision Monte-Carlo simulations based on a parallel version of the Wang-Landau algorithm and finite-size scaling techniques we study the effect of quenched disorder in the crystal-field coupling of the Blume-Capel model on the square lattice. We mainly focus on the part of the phase diagram where the pure model undergoes a continuous transition, known to fall into the universality class of the pure Ising ferromagnet. A dedicated scaling analysis reveals concrete evidence in favor of the strong universality hypothesis with the presence of additional logarithmic corrections in the s…
Large-scale Monte Carlo simulations are used to explore the effect of quenched disorder on one dimensional, non-equilibrium kinetic Ising models with locally broken spin symmetry, at zero temperature (the symmetry is broken through spin-flip rates that differ for '+' and '-' spins). The model is found to exhibit a continuous phase transition to an absorbing state. The associated critical behavior is studied at zero branching rate of kinks, through analysis spreading of '+' and '-' spins and, of the kink density. Impurities exert a strong effect on the critical behavior only for a particular ch…
We implement a two-stage approach of the Wang-Landau algorithm to investigate the critical properties of the 3D Ising model with quenched bond randomness. In particular, we consider the case where disorder couples to the nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic interaction, in terms of a bimodal distribution of strong versus weak bonds. Our simulations are carried out for large ensembles of disorder realizations and lattices with linear sizes $L$ in the range $L=8-64$. We apply well-established finite-size scaling techniques and concepts from the scaling theory of disordered systems to describe the natu…
We determine the interface tension for the 100, 110 and 111 interface of the simple cubic Ising model with nearest-neighbour interaction using novel simulation methods. To overcome the droplet/strip transition and the droplet nucleation barrier we use a newly developed combination of the multimagnetic algorithm with the parallel tempering method. We investigate a large range of inverse temperatures to study the anisotropy of the interface tension in detail.
We study a modified model of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation with quenched disorder, in which the driving force decreases as the interface rises up. A critical state is self-organized, and the anomalous scaling law with roughness exponent alpha=0.63 is numerically obtained.
We consider phase separation on the strip for the two-dimensional Ising model in the near-critical region. Within the framework of field theory, we find exact analytic results for certain two- and three-point correlation functions of the order parameter field. The analytic results for order parameter correlations, energy density profile, subleading corrections and passage probability density of the interface are confirmed by accurate Monte Carlo simulations we performed.
We investigate properties of the diffusive motion of an interface in the two-dimensional Ising model in equilibrium or nonequilibrium situations. We focused on the relation between the power spectrum of a time sequence of spins and diffusive motion of an interface which was already clarified in one- dimensional systems with a nonequilibrium phase transition like the asymmetric simple exclusion process. It is clarified that the interface motion is a diffusion process with a drift force toward the higher-temperature side when the system is in contact with heat reservoirs at different temperature…
We study the structure of an interface in a three dimensional Ising system created by an external non-uniform field $H({\bf r},t)$. $H$ changes sign over a two dimensional plane of arbitrary orientation. When the field is pulled with velocity ${\bf v}_e$, (i.e. $H({\bf r},t) = H({\bf r - v_e}t)$), the interface undergoes a several dynamical transitions. For low velocities it is pinned by the field profile and moves along with it, the distribution of local slopes undergoing a series of commensurate-incommensurate transitions. For large ${\bf v}_e$ the interface de-pinns and grows with KPZ expon…
We investigate phase transitions in the Ising model and the ANNNI model in transverse field using the interface approach. The exact result of the Ising chain in a transverse field is reproduced. We find that apart from the interfacial energy, there are two other response functions which show simple scaling behaviour. For the ANNNI model in a transverse field, the phase diagram can be fully studied in the region where a ferromagnetic to paramagnetic phase transition occurs. The other region can be studied partially; the boundary where the antiphase vanishes can be estimated.
Recently Baumann et al. [arXiv:0709.3228v1] studied the phase-ordering kinetics of the two-dimensional Ising model with uniform spatially quenched disorder by Monte-Carlo simulations. They found that the two-time response and correlation functions are in agreement with the predictions of local scale invariance generalised to z!=2. The present paper shows why this is not true and suggests an alternative approach which leads to a much better agreement with the numerical results.
The roughening behavior of a one-dimensional interface fluctuating under quenched disorder growth is examined while keeping an anchored boundary. The latter introduces detailed balance conditions which allows for a thorough analysis of equilibrium aspects at both macroscopic and microscopic scales. It is found that the interface roughens linearly with the substrate size only in the vicinity of special disorder realizations. Otherwise, it remains stiff and tilted.
We investigate the relationship between a diffusive motion of an interface, heat conduction, and the roughening transition in the three-dimensional Ising model. We numerically compute the thermal conductivity and the diffusion constant and find that the diffusion constant shows a crossover in its temperature dependence. The crossover temperature is equal to the roughening transition temperature in equilibrium and deviates from it when heat flows in the system. From these results, we discuss the possibility that heat conduction causes a shift of the roughening transition temperature.
The aspects of phase transitions in the two-dimensional Ising models modified by quenched and annealed site disorder are discussed in the framework of fermionic approach based on the reformulation of the problem in terms of integrals with anticommuting Grassmann variables.
If quenched to zero temperature, the one-dimensional Ising spin chain undergoes coarsening, whereby the density of domain walls decays algebraically in time. We show that this coarsening process can be interrupted by exerting a rapidly oscillating periodic field with enough strength to compete with the spin-spin interaction. By analyzing correlation functions and the distribution of domain lengths both analytically and numerically, we observe nontrivial correlation with more than one length scale at the threshold field strength.
We investigate the phase diagram of a mixed spin-1/2--spin-1 Ising system in the presence of quenched disordered anisotropy. We carry out a mean-field and a standard self-consistent Bethe--Peierls calculation. Depending on the amount of disorder, there appear novel transition lines and multicritical points. Also, we report some connections with a percolation problem and an exact result in one dimension.
The roughening phase diagram of the d=3 Ising model with uniaxially anisotropic interactions is calculated for the entire range of anisotropy, from decoupled planes to the isotropic model to the solid-on-solid model, using hard-spin mean-field theory. The phase diagram contains the line of ordering phase transitions and, at lower temperatures, the line of roughening phase transitions, where the interface between ordered domains roughens. Upon increasing the anisotropy, roughening transition temperatures settle after the isotropic case, whereas the ordering transition temperature increases to i…
We present a realization of directed Ising (DI) type dynamic absorbing state phase transitions in the context of one-dimensional interfaces, such as the relaxation of a step on a vicinal surface. Under the restriction that particle deposition and evaporation can only take place near existing kinks, the interface relaxes into one of three steady states: rough, perfectly ordered flat (OF) without kinks, or disordered flat (DOF) with randomly placed kinks but in perfect up-down alternating order. A DI type dynamic preroughening transition takes place between the OF and DOF phases. At this critica…
The dynamics of sandpile models are mapped to discrete interface equations. We study in detail the Bak-Tang-Wiesenfeld model, a stochastic model with random thresholds, and the Manna model. These are, respectively, discretizations of the quenched Edwards-Wilkinson equation with columnar, point-like and correlated noise, with the constraint that the interface velocity is either zero or exactly one. The constraint, embedded in the sandpile rules, gives rise to another noise component. This term has for the Bak-Tang-Wiesenfeld model long-range on-site correlations and reveals that with open bound…
We investigate the depinning transition for driven interfaces in the random-field Ising model for various dimensions. We consider the order parameter as a function of the control parameter (driving field) and examine the effect of thermal fluctuations. Although thermal fluctuations drive the system away from criticality the order parameter obeys a certain scaling law for sufficiently low temperatures and the corresponding exponents are determined. Our results suggest that the so-called upper critical dimension of the depinning transition is five and that the systems belongs to the universality…
Properties of the one-dimensional totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP), and their connection with the dynamical scaling of moving interfaces described by a Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation are investigated. With periodic boundary conditions, scaling of interface widths (the latter defined via a discrete occupation-number-to-height mapping), gives the exponents $α=0.500(5)$, $z=1.52(3)$, $β=0.33(1)$. With open boundaries, results are as follows: (i) in the maximal-current phase, the exponents are the same as for the periodic case, and in agreement with recent Bethe ansatz resul…
We consider the $d$-dimensional transverse-field Ising model with power-law interactions $J/r^{d+σ}$ in the presence of a noisy longitudinal field with zero average. We study the longitudinal-magnetization dynamics of an initial paramagnetic state after a sudden switch-on of both the interactions and the noisy field. While the system eventually relaxes to an infinite-temperature state with vanishing magnetization correlations, we find that two-time correlation functions show aging at intermediate times. Moreover, for times shorter than the inverse noise strength $κ$ and distances longer than $…
