We outline an approach to the inverse problem of Calderón that highlights the role of microlocal normal forms and propagation of singularities and extends a number of earlier results also in the anisotropic case. The main result states that from the boundary measurements it is possible to recover integrals of the unknown coefficient over certain two-dimensional manifolds called good bicharacteristic leaves. This reduces the Calderón problem into solving a linear integral geometry problem (inversion of a bicharacteristic leaf transform).
Being motivated by the problem of deducing $L^p$-bounds on the second fundamental form of an isometric immersion from $L^p$-bounds on its mean curvature vector field, we prove a (nonlinear) Calderón-Zygmund inequality for maps between complete (possibly noncompact) Riemannian manifolds.
In this paper, we use the theory of symmetric Dirichlet forms to give a probabilistic interpretation of Calderón's inverse conductivity problem in terms of reflecting diffusion processes and their corresponding boundary trace processes.
This paper is a survey of some recent results on the validity and the failure of global $W^{2,p}$ regularity properties of smooth solutions of the Poisson equation $Δu = f$ on a complete Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$. We review different methods developed to obtain a-priori $L^p$-Hessian estimates of the form $\| \Hess(u) \|_{L^p} \leq C_1 \| u \|_{L^p} + C_2 \| f \|_{L^p}$ under various geometric conditions on $M$ both in the case of real valued functions and for manifold valued maps. We also present explicit and somewhat implicit counterexamples showing that, in general, this integral inequali…

We show that Nachman's integral equations for the Calderón problem, derived for conductivities in $W^{2,p}(Ω)$, still hold for $L^\infty$ conductivities which are $1$ in a neighborhood of the boundary. We also prove convergence of scattering transforms for smooth approximations to the scattering transform of $L^\infty$ conductivities. We rely on Astala-Päivärinta's formulation of the Calderón problem for a framework in which these convergence results make sense.
In this note, we study Calderón's problem for certain classes of conductivities in domains with circular symmetry in two and three dimensions. Explicit formulas are obtained for the reconstruction of the conductivity from the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. As a consequence, we show that the reconstruction is Lipschitz stable.
In this note we show that on any compact subdomain of a Kähler manifold that admits sufficiently many global holomorphic functions, the products of harmonic functions form a complete set. This gives a positive answer to the linearized anisotropic Calderón problem on a class of complex manifolds that includes compact subdomains of Stein manifolds and sufficiently small subdomains of Kähler manifolds. Some of these manifolds do not admit limiting Carleman weights, and thus cannot by treated by standard methods for the Calderón problem in higher dimensions. The argument is based on constructing M…
We introduce the fractional magnetic operator involving a magnetic potential and an electric potential. We formulate an inverse problem for the fractional magnetic operator. We determine the electric potential from the exterior partial measurements of the associated Dirichlet-to-Neumann map by using Runge approximation property.
The Calderón formulas (i.e., the combination of single-layer and hyper-singular boundary integral operators) have been widely utilized in the process of constructing valid boundary integral equation systems which could possess highly favorable spectral properties. This work is devoted to studying the theoretical properties of elastodynamic Calderón formulas which provide us with a solid basis for the design of fast boundary integral equation methods solving elastic wave problems defined on a close-surface or an open-surface in two dimensions. For the closed-surface case, it is proved that the …
We study general parabolic equations of the form $u_t = div A(x,t, u,D u) + div(|F|^{p-2} F)+ f$ whose principal part depends on the solution itself. The vector field $A$ is assumed to have small mean oscillation in $x$, measurable in $t$, Lipschitz continuous in $u$, and its growth in $Du$ is like the $p$-Laplace operator. We establish interior Calderón-Zygmund estimates for locally bounded weak solutions to the equations when $p>2n/(n+2)$. This is achieved by employing a perturbation method together with developing a two-parameter technique and a new compactness argument. We also make crucia…

We investigate the Calderón problem for the fractional Schrödinger equation with drift, proving that the unknown drift and potential in a bounded domain can be determined simultaneously and uniquely by an infinite number of exterior measurements. In particular, in contrast to its local analogue, this nonlocal problem does \emph{not} enjoy a gauge invariance. The uniqueness result is complemented by an associated logarithmic stability estimate under suitable apriori assumptions. Also uniqueness under finitely many \emph{generic} measurements is discussed. Here the genericity is obtained through…
In this article we study the linearized anisotropic Calderón problem on a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary. This problem amounts to showing that products of pairs of harmonic functions of the manifold form a complete set. We assume that the manifold is transversally anisotropic and that the transversal manifold is real analytic and satisfies a geometric condition related to the geometry of pairs of intersecting geodesics. In this case, we solve the linearized anisotropic Calderón problem. The geometric condition does not involve the injectivity of the geodesic X-ray transform. Crucial…
For $D$ a bounded domain in $\mathbb R^d, d \ge 2,$ with smooth boundary $\partial D$, the non-linear inverse problem of recovering the unknown conductivity $γ$ determining solutions $u=u_{γ, f}$ of the partial differential equation \begin{equation*} \begin{split} \nabla \cdot(γ\nabla u)&=0 \quad \text{ in }D, \\ u&=f \quad \text { on } \partial D, \end{split} \end{equation*} from noisy observations $Y$ of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map \[f \mapsto Λ_γ(f) = {γ\frac{\partial u_{γ,f}}{\partial ν}}\Big|_{\partial D},\] with $\partial/\partial ν$ denoting the outward normal derivative, is considered…
We deal with the general problem of scattering by open-arcs in two-dimensional space. We show that this problem can be solved by means of certain second-kind integral equations of the form $\tilde{N} \tilde{S}[φ] = f$, where $\tilde{N}$ and $\tilde{S}$ are first-kind integral operators whose composition gives rise to a generalized Calderón formula of the form $\tilde{N} \tilde{S} = \tilde{J}_0^τ+ \tilde{K}$ in a {\em weighted, periodized} Sobolev space. The $\tilde{N} \tilde{S}$ formulation provides, for the first time, a second-kind integral equation for the open-arc scattering problem with N…

We study the inverse problem of recovering a tree graph together with the weights on its edges (equivalently a metric tree) from the knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann matrix associated with the Laplacian. We prove an explicit formula which relates this matrix to the pairwise weighted distances of the leaves of the tree and, thus, allows to recover the weighted tree. This result can be viewed as a counterpart of the Calderón problem in the analysis of PDEs. In contrast to earlier results on inverse problems for metric graphs, we only assume knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann matrix for a…
We investigate a generalization of Calderón's problem of recovering the conductivity coefficient in a conductivity equation from boundary measurements. As a model equation we consider the p-conductivity equation with p strictly between one and infinity, which reduces to the standard conductivity equation when p equals two, and to the p-Laplace equation when the conductivity is constant. The thesis consists of results on the direct problem, boundary determination and detecting inclusions. We formulate the equation as a variational problem also when the conductivity may be zero or infinity in la…
We prove uniqueness results for a Calderon type inverse problem for the Hodge Laplacian acting on graded forms on certain manifolds in three dimensions. In particular, we show that partial measurements of the relative-to-absolute or absolute-to-relative boundary value maps uniquely determine a zeroth order potential. The method is based on Carleman estimates for the Hodge Laplacian with relative or absolute boundary conditions, and on the construction of complex geometric optics solutions which reduce the Calderon type problem to a tensor tomography problem for 2-tensors. The arguments in this…
In this article we consider direct and inverse problems for $α$-stable, elliptic nonlocal operators whose kernels are possibly only supported on cones and which satisfy the structural condition of \emph{directional antilocality} as introduced in \cite{I86}. We consider the Dirichlet problem for these operators on the "domain of dependence of the operator" and in several, adapted function spaces. This formulation allows one to avoid natural "gauges" which would else have to be considered in the study of the associated inverse problems. Exploiting the directional antilocality of these operators …
We introduce new boundary integral operators which are the exact inverses of the weakly singular and hypersingular operators for the Laplacian on flat disks. Moreover, we provide explicit closed forms for them and prove the continuity and ellipticity of their corresponding bilinear forms in the natural Sobolev trace spaces. This permit us to derive new Calderón-type identities that can provide the foundation for optimal operator preconditioning in Galerkin boundary element methods.
We study a class of fractional semilinear elliptic equations and formulate the corresponding Calderón problem. We determine the nonlinearity from the exterior partial measurements of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map by using first order linearization and the Runge approximation property.
We prove the natural weighted Calderón and Zygmund estimates for solutions to elliptic and parabolic obstacle problems in nondivergence form with discontinuous coefficients and irregular obstacles. We also obtain Morrey regularity results for the Hessian of the solutions and Hölder continuity of the gradient of the solutions.
