We report a Dynamical Cluster Approximation (DCA) investigation of the doped periodic Anderson model (PAM) to explain the universal scaling in the Knight shift anomaly predicted by the phenomenological two-fluid model and confirmed in many heavy-fermion compounds. We calculate the quantitative evolution of the orbital-dependent magnetic susceptibility and reproduce correctly the two-fluid prediction in a large range of doping and hybridization. Our results confirm the presence of a temperature/energy scale $T^{\ast}$ for the universal scaling and show distinctive behavors of the Knight shift anomaly in response to other "orders" at low temperatures. However, comparison with the temperature evolution of the calculated resistivity and quasiparticle spectral peak indicates a different characteristic temperature from $T^*$, in contradiction with the experimental observation in CeCoIn$_5$ and other compounds. This reveals a missing piece in the current model calculations in explaining the two-fluid phenomenology.
We report a Determinant Quantum Monte Carlo investigation which quantifies the behavior of the susceptibility and the entropy in the framework of the periodic Anderson model (PAM), focussing on the evolution with different degree of conduction electron (c) -local moment (f) hybridization. These results capture the behavior observed in several experiments, including the universal behavior of the NMR Knight shift anomaly below the crossover temperature, $T^{\ast}$. We find that $T^{\ast}$ is a measure of the onset of c-f correlations and grows with increasing hybridization. These results suggest…
We have studied the Knight shift $K(\vec r, T)$ and magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$ of heavy electron materials, modeled by the infinite U Anderson model with the NCA method. A systematic study of $K(\vec r, T)$ and $χ(T)$ for different Kondo temperatures $T_0$ (which depends on the hybridization width $Γ$) shows a low temperature anomaly (nonlinear relation between $K$ and $χ$) which increases as the Kondo temperature $T_0$ and distance $r$ increase. We carried out an incoherent lattice sum by adding the $K(\vec r)$ of a few hundred shells of rare earth atoms around a nucleus and compare the n…
We study the doping driven Mott metal-insulator transition (MIT) in the periodic Anderson model set in the Mott-Hubbard regime. A striking asymmetry for electron or hole driven transitions is found. The electron doped MIT at larger U is similar to the one found in the single band Hubbard model, with a first order character due to coexistence of solutions. The hole doped MIT, in contrast, is second order and can be described as the delocalization of Zhang-Rice singlets.
We study the interplay of disorder and correlation in the one-dimensional hole-doped Hubbard-model with disorder (Anderson-Hubbard model) by using the density-matrix renormalization group method. Concentrating on the doped-hole density profile, we find in a large $U/t$ regime that the clean system exhibits a simple fluid-like behavior whereas finite disorders create locally Mott regions which expand their area with increasing the disorder strength contrary to the ordinary sense. We propose that such an anomalous Mott phase formation assisted by disorder is observable in atomic Fermi gases by s…
We derive the disorder vs. doping phase diagram of the doped Hubbard model via Dynamical Mean Field Theory combined with Typical Medium Theory, which allows the description of both Mott (correlation driven) and Anderson (disorder driven) metal-insulator transitions. We observe a transition from a metal to an Anderson-Mott insulator for increasing disorder strength at all interactions. In the weak correlation regime and rather small doping, the Anderson-Mott insulator displays properties which are alike to the ones found at half-filling. In particular, this phase is characterized by the presenc…
The Periodic Anderson Model (PAM) is widely studied to understand strong correlation physics and especially the competition of antiferromagnetism and singlet formation. Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) studies have focused both on issues such as the nature of screening and locating the quantum critical point (QCP) at zero temperature and also on possible experimental connections to phenomena ranging from the Cerium volume collapse to the relation of the magnetic susceptibility and Knight shift in heavy fermions. In this paper we extend QMC work to lattices in which the conduction electron sites can h…
This paper explores the energy scales of the doped Anderson lattice model using dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT), using a continuous-time Quantum Monte Carlo (CTQMC) impurity solver. We show that the low temperature properties of the lattice can not be scaled using the single ion local Kondo temperature $T_K$ but instead are governed by a doping-dependent coherence temperature $T*$ which can be used to scale the temperature dependence of the spectral function, transport properties, and entropy. At half filling $T*$ closely approximates the single ion $T_K$, but as the filling $n_c$ is reduce…
The Knight shift data on Li and Zn substituted YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ are analysed using an itinerant model with short-range antiferromagnetic correlations. The model parameters, which are determined by fitting the experimental data on the transverse nuclear relaxation rate $T_2^{-1}$ of pure YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$, are used to calculate the Knight shifts for various nuclei around a nonmagnetic impurity located in the CuO$_2$ planes. The calculations are carried out for Li and Zn impurities substituted into optimally doped and underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$. The results are compared with th…
The NiO4 plaquettes in La2NiO4.17, a cousin of the hole-doped high-temperature superconductor La{2-x}SrxCuO4, have been studied by 61Ni-NMR in 14 T in a single crystal enriched in 61Ni. Doped and undoped plaquettes are discriminated by the shift of the NMR resonance, leading to a small line splitting, which hardly depends on temperature or susceptibility. The smallness of the effect is additional evidence for the location of the holes as deduced by Schussler-Langenheine et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 156402 (2005). The increase in linewidth with decreasing temperature shows a local field redistr…
We investigate the effect of hole and electron doping to half-filling in the periodic Anderson model on a triangular lattice by the Hartree-Fock approximation at zero temperature. At half-filling, the system exhibits a partially disordered insulating state, in which a collinear antiferromagnetic order on an unfrustrated honeycomb subnetwork coexists with nonmagnetic state at the remaining sites. We find that the carrier doping destabilizes the partially disordered state, resulting in a phase separation to a doped metallic state with different magnetic order. The partially disordered state is r…
Whether or not a physical property can be enhanced in an inhomogeneous system compared with its homogeneous counterpart is an intriguing fundamental question. We provide a concrete example with positive answer by uncovering a remarkable enhancement of both antiferromagnetic (AF) structure factor and $d$-wave pairing tendency in the doped staggered periodic Anderson model (PAM) with two alternating inequivalent local moments. The common thread of these enhancement is found to originate from the generic "self-averaging" effect and non-monotonic dependence of the corresponding physical quantity i…
The first indication of a pseudogap in cuprates came from a sudden decrease of NMR Knight shift at a doping-dependent temperature $T^*(δ)$. Since then, experiments have found phase transitions at a lower $T^*_\text{phase}(δ)$. Using plaquette cellular dynamical mean-field for the square-lattice Hubbard model at high temperature, where the results are reliable, we show that $T^*(δ)$ shares many features of $T^*_\text{phase}(δ)$. The remarkable agreement with several experiments, including quantum critical behavior of the electronic specific heat, supports the view that the pseudogap is controll…
Motivated by experiments on doped transition metal oxides, this paper considers the interplay of interactions, disorder, kinetic energy and temperature in a simple system. An ensemble of two-site Anderson-Hubbard model systems has already been shown to display a zero-bias anomaly which shares features with that found in the two-dimensional Anderson-Hubbard model. Here the temperature dependence of the density of states of this ensemble is examined. In the atomic limit, there is no zero-bias anomaly at zero temperature, but one develops at small nonzero temperatures. With hopping, small tempera…

We study the Mott metal-insulator transition in the Periodic Anderson Model within Dynamical Mean Field Theory (DMFT). Near the quantum transition, we find a non-Fermi liquid metallic state down to a vanishing temperature scale. We identify the origin of the non-Fermi liquid behavior as due to magnetic scattering of the doped carriers by the localized moments. The non-Fermi liquid state can be tuned by either doping or external magnetic field. Our results show that the coupling to spatial magnetic fluctuations (absent in DMFT) is not a prerequisite to realize a non-Fermi liquid scenario for he…
We calculate the longitudinal ($σ_{xx}$) and Hall ($σ_{xy}$) optical conductivities for two-dimensional metals with thermally disordered antiferromagnetism using a generalization of an approximation introduced by Lee, Rice and Anderson for the self energy. The conductivities are calculated from the Kubo formula, with current vertex function treated in a conserving approximation satisfying the Ward identity. In order to obtain a finite DC limit, we introduce phenomenologically impurity scattering, with relaxation time $τ$. $σ_{xx}(Ω)$ satisfies the $f$-sum rule. For the infinitely peaked spin c…
We examine the doping effects in the two-dimensional periodic Anderson model using the determinant Quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) method. We observe bound states around the Kondo hole site and find that the heavy electron states are destroyed at the nearest-neighbor sites. Our results show no clear sign of hybridization oscillation predicted in previous mean-field calculations. We further study the electron transport with increasing doping and as a function of temperature and obtain a critical doping at x_c~0.6 that marks a transition from the Kondo insulator regime to the single-ion Kondo regime.…
The Weyl semimetallic compound Eu2Ir2O7 along with its hole doped derivatives (which is achieved by substituting trivalent Eu by divalent Sr) are investigated through transport, magnetic and calorimetric studies. The metal-insulator transition (MIT) temperature is found to get substantially reduced with hole doping and for 10% Sr doping the composition is metallic down to temperature as low as 5 K. These doped compounds are found to violate the Mott-Ioffe-Regel condition for minimum electrical conductivity and show distinct signature of non-Fermi liquid behavior at low temperature. The MIT in …
In addition to Anderson and Mott localization, intrinsic phase separation has long been advocated as the third fundamental mechanism controlling the doping-driven metal-insulator transitions. In electronic system, where charge neutrality precludes global phase separation, it may lead to various inhomogeneous states and dramaticahttp://arxiv.org/submit/215787/metadata arXiv Submission metadatally affect transport. Here we theoretically predict the precise experimental signatures of such phase-separation-driven metal-insulator transitions. We show that anomalous transport is expected in an inter…
We study a generalized Anderson model that mixes two localized configurations --one formed by two degenerate doublets and the other by a triplet with single-ion anisotropy $DS_z^2$-- by means of two degenerate conduction channels. The model has been derived for a single Ni impurity embedded into an O-doped Au chain. Using the numerical renormalization group, we find a topological quantum phase transition, at a finite value $D_c,$ between two regular Fermi liquid phases of high (low) conductance and topological number $2 I_L/π= 0$ (-1) for $D < D_c$ ($D > D_c$), where $I_L$ is the well-known Lu…
The Kondo and Periodic Anderson Model (PAM) are known to provide a microscopic picture of many of the fundamental properties of heavy fermion materials and, more generally, a variety of strong correlation phenomena in $4f$ and $5f$ systems. In this paper, we apply the Determinant Quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) method to include disorder in the PAM, specifically the removal of a fraction $x$ of the localized orbitals. We determine the evolution of the coherence temperature $T^*$, where the local moments and conduction electrons become entwined in a heavy fermion fluid, with $x$ and with the hybridi…
Using the constrained-path Monte Carlo method, we studied the magnetic properties of the two-dimensional periodic Anderson model for electron fillings between 1/4 and 1/2. We also derived two effective low energy theories to assist in interpreting the numerical results. For 1/4 filling we found that the system can be a Mott or a charge transfer insulator, depending on the relative values of the Coulomb interaction and the charge transfer gap between the two non-interacting bands. The insulator may be a paramagnet or antiferromagnet. We concentrated on the effect of electron doping on these ins…
Temperature-dependent inter-plane resistivity, $ρ_c(T)$, was used to characterise the normal state of the iron-arsenide superconductor Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ over a broad doping range $0\leq x<0.50$. The data were compared with in-plane resistivity, $ρ_a(T)$, and magnetic susceptibility, $χ(T)$, taken in $H \bot c$, as well as Co NMR Knight shift, $^{59}K$, and spin relaxation rate, $1/T_1T$. The inter-plane resistivity data show a clear correlation with the NMR Knight shift, assigned to the formation of the pseudo-gap. Evolution of $ρ_c(T)$ with doping reveals two characteristic energ…
We describe a new possible route to the metal-insulator transition in doped semiconductors such as Si:P or Si:B. We explore the possibility that the loss of metallic transport occurs through Mott localization of electrons into a quantum spin liquid state with diffusive charge neutral "spinon" excitations. Such a quantum spin liquid state can appear as an intermediate phase between the metal and the Anderson-Mott insulator. An immediate testable consequence is the presence of metallic thermal conductivity at low temperature in the electrical insulator near the metal-insulator transition. Furthe…
Resonating valence bond states in a doped Mott insulator was proposed to explain superconductivity in cuprates in January 1987 by Anderson. A challenging task then was proving existence of this unconventional mechanism and a wealth of possibilities, with a rigor acceptable in standard condensed matter physics, in a microscopic theory and develop suitable many body techniques. Shortly, a paper by Anderson, Zou and us (BZA) undertook this task and initiated a program. Three key papers that followed, shortly, essentially completed the program, as far as superconductivity is concerned: i) a gauge …
We investigate the thermoelectric properties of PbTe doped with a small concentration $x$ of Tl impurities acting as acceptors and described by Anderson impurities with negative on-site (effective) interaction. The resulting charge Kondo effect naturally accounts for a number of the low temperature anomalies in this system, including the unusual doping dependence of the carrier concentration, the Fermi level pinning and the self-compensation effect. The Kondo anomalies in the low temperature resistivity at temperatures $T\leq 10\, {\rm K}$ and the $x$-dependence of the residual resistivity are…
The competition between antiferromagnetic (AF) order and singlet formation is a central phenomenon of the Kondo and Periodic Anderson Hamiltonians, and of the heavy fermion materials they describe. In this paper, we explore the effects of an additional conduction band on magnetism in these models, and, specifically, on changes in the AF-singlet quantum critical point (QCP) and the one particle and spin spectral functions. To understand the magnetic phase transition qualitatively, we first carry out a self-consistent mean field theory (MFT). The basic conclusion is that, at half-filling, the co…
We discuss here a comparative study of the role of local structure and/or nature of local magnetic coupling on the electrical transport properties of Mn site substituted La-Ca-Mn-O perovskites. Particular emphasis is being paid to explore the strong correlation between the insulator-metal transition (TIM) and the residual resistivity (rhoo) upon substitution. There exists an inverse relationship between ro and TIM in the compounds under present discussion. Best fit for TIM Vs ro could be obtained for the compounds understudy to a first order exponential decay with a functional form TIM = TIMO …
Although Fe-based superconductors are multiorbital correlated electronic systems, previous nuclei magnetic resonance (NMR) measurement suggests that a single spin-fluid model is sufficient to describe its spin behavior. Here, we firstly observed the breakdown of single spin-fluid model in a heavily hole-doped Fe-based superconductor CsFe2As2 by site-selective NMR measurement. At high temperature regime, both of Knight shift and nuclei spin-lattice relaxation at 133Cs and 75As nuclei exhibit distinct temperature-dependent behavior, suggesting the breakdown of single spin-fluid model in CsFe2As2…
The physics underlying the complex glassy phenomena, which accompany the formation of polarons in optimally doped manganites (ODM) is a cumbersome issue with many unexplained aspects. In this article we present $^{139}$La and $^{55}$Mn NMR in the temperature range 80K - 900K of ODM La$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_3$. We show that local lattice distortions, established in the Paramagnetic (PM) phase for $T<700$K, induce a genuine spin-glass state, which for $T<T_c$ consolidates with the Ferromagnetic (FM) state into a single thermodynamic phase. Comparative NMR experiments on La$_{0.77}$Ca$_{0.23}$M…
Based on the non-crossing approximation, we calculate both the linear and nonlinear conductance within the two-lead two-channel single-impurity Anderson model where the conduction electron density of states vanishes in a power-law fashion $ \propto |ω-μ_F|^r$ with $r=1$ near the Fermi energy, appropriate for an hexagonal system. For given gate voltage, we address the universal crossover from a two-channel Kondo phase, argued to occur in doped graphene, to an unscreened local moment phase. We extract universal scaling functions in conductance governing charge transfer through the two-channel ps…
We study the possibility of d0 ferromagnetism in the compound MgO doped with nitrogen (N). The Haldane-Anderson impurity model is formulated within the tight-binding approximation for determining the host band-structure and the impurity-host hybridization. Using the quantum Monte Carlo technique, we observe a finite local moment for an N impurity, and long-range ferromagnetic correlations between two N impurities. The ferromagnetic correlations are strongly influenced by the impurity bound state. When the ferromagnetic correlation between a pair of impurities is mapped onto the isotropic Heise…
We introduce a variational state for one-dimensional two-orbital Hubbard models that intuitively explains the recent computational discovery of pairing in these systems when hole doped. Our Ansatz is an optimized linear superposition of Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki valence bond states, rendering the combination a valence bond liquid dubbed Orbital Resonant Valence Bond. We show that the undoped (one electron/orbital) quantum state of two sites coupled into a global spin singlet is exactly written employing only spin-1/2 singlets linking orbitals at nearest-neighbor sites. Generalizing to longer…
We have investigated the impact of Ru substitution for Co on the behavior of the ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe by performing x-ray diffraction, magnetization, specific heat and electrical resistivity measurements on polycrystalline samples of the $\mathrm{UCo}_{1-x}\mathrm{Ru}_{x}\mathrm{Ge}$ series ($0\geq x\leq0.9$). The initial Ru substitution up to $x\approx0.1$ leads to a simultaneous sharp increase of the Curie temperature and spontaneous magnetization up to maximum values of $T_{\mathrm{C}}=8.6 K$ and $M_{\mathrm{S}}=0.1 μ_{\mathrm{B}}$ per formula unit, respectively, whereas super…
Heavy-fermion or Kondo lattice materials are considered to be typical strongly correlated systems, for which mean-field approximations have shown that the Coulomb interaction increases the effective mass and narrows the band gap. In this paper, to clarify interaction effects on the electronic excitation, the spectral function of the Kondo lattice and periodic Anderson models is studied around Kondo insulators in the strong-coupling regime, by using the non-Abelian dynamical density-matrix renormalization group method and perturbation theory. Upon doping a Kondo insulator, an electronic mode em…
The Knight shift of Ga-71 nuclei is measured in two different electron-doped multiple quantum well samples using optically pumped NMR. These data are the first direct measurements of the electron spin polarization, P(nu,T)=<Sz(nu,T)>/max<Sz>, near nu=1/3. The P(T) data at nu=1/3 probe the neutral spin-flip excitations of a fractional quantum Hall ferromagnet. In addition, the saturated P(nu) drops on either side of nu=1/3, even in a Btot=12 Tesla field. The observed depolarization is quite small, consistent with an average of about 0.1 spin-flips per quasihole (or quasiparticle), a value which…
Studies of systems with two fermionic bands with repulsive interaction strength U have a long history, with the Periodic Anderson Model (PAM) being one of the most frequently considered Hamiltonians. In this paper, we use Quantum Monte Carlo to study analogous issues for attractive interactions. As in the Periodic Anderson Model, we focus on a case where one band is uncorrelated (U=0), and focus on the effect of hybridization V between the bands on the pairing correlations. A key difference with the PAM is that there is no sign problem, so that we are able to explore the physics of doped multi…
Starting from exact eigenstates for a symmetric ring, we derive a low-energy effective generalized Anderson Hamiltonian which contains two spin doublets with opposite momenta and a singlet for the neutral molecule. For benzene, the singlet (doublets) represent the ground state of the neutral (singly charged) molecule. We calculate the non-equilibrium conductance through a benzene molecule, doped with one electron or a hole (i.e. in the Kondo regime), and connected to two conducting leads at different positions. We solve the problem using the Keldysh formalism and the non-crossing approximation…
We performed $^{75}$As NMR studies on two overdoped high-quality Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ (x=0.7 and 1.0) single crystals. In the normal states, we found a dramatic increase of the spin-lattice relaxation ($1/^{75}T_1$) from the x=0.7 to the x=1.0 samples. In KFe$_2$As$_2$, the ratio of $1/^{75}T_1TK_n^2$, where $^{75}K_n$ is the Knight shift, increases as temperature drops. These results indicate the existence of a new type of spin fluctuations in KFe$_2$As$_2$ which is accustomed to being treated as a simple Fermi liquid. In the superconducting state, we observe a step-like feature in t…
We present a simple model for the doped compound $Nd_{2-y}Ce_{y}CuO_{4}$, in order to explain some recent experimental results on the latter. Within a Hartree-Fock context, we start from an impurity Anderson-like model and consider the magnetic splitting of the $Nd$-$4f$ ground state Kramers doublet due to exchange interactions with the ordered $Cu$ moments. Our results are in very good agreement with the experimental data, yielding a Schottky anomaly peak for the specific heat that reduces its amplitude, broadens and shifts to lower temperatures, upon $Ce$ doping. For overdoped compounds at l…
