We consider the covering map $π:\mathbb{C}^n\to \mathbb{T}$ of a compact complex torus. Given an algebraic variety $X\subseteq \mathbb{C}^n$ we describe the topological closure of $π(X)$ in $\mathbb T$. We obtain a similar description when $\mathbb{T}$ is a real torus and $X\subseteq \mathbb{R}^n$ is a set definable in an o-minimal structure over the reals.
The study of the birational properties of algebraic $k$-tori began in the sixties and seventies with work of Voskresenkii, Endo, Miyata, Colliot-Thélène and Sansuc. There was particular interest in determining the rationality of a given algebraic $k$-tori. As rationality problems for algebraic varieties are in general difficult, it is natural to consider relaxed notions such as stable rationality, or even retract rationality. Work of the above authors and later Saltman in the eighties determined necessary and sufficient conditions to determine when an algebraic torus is stably rational, respec…
This is an expanded version of my talk given at the International Conference ``Algebra and Number Theory'' dedicated to the 80th anniversary of V. E. Voskresenskii, which was held at the Samara State University in May 2007. The goal is to give an overview of results of V. E. Voskresenskii on arithmetic and birational properties of algebraic tori which culminated in his monograph "Algebraic Tori" published in Russian 30 years ago. I shall try to put these results and ideas into somehow broader context and also to give a brief digest of the relevant activity related to the period after the Engli…
Let $p$ be an odd prime number, $D_p$ be the dihedral group of order $2p$, $h_p$ and $h^+_p$ be the class numbers of $\bm{Q}(ζ_p)$ and $\bm{Q}(ζ_p+ ζ_p^{-1})$ respectively. Theorem. $h_p^+=1$ if and only if, for any field $k$ admitting a $D_p$-extension, all the algebraic $D_p$-tori over $k$ are stably rational. A similar result for $h_p=1$ and $C_p$-tori is valid also.
Rationality problems of algebraic k-tori are closely related to rationality problems of the invariant field, also known as Noether's Problem. We describe how a function field of algebraic k-tori can be identified as an invariant field under a group action and that a k-tori is rational if and only if its function field is rational over k. We also introduce character group of k-tori and numerical approach to determine rationality of k-tori.
This is a tutorial on some aspects of toric varieties related to their potential use in geometric modeling. We discuss projective toric varieties and their ideals, as well as real toric varieties and the algebraic moment map. In particular, we explain the relation between linear precision and the algebraic moment map. This builds on the introduction to toric varieties by David Cox: What is a Toric Variety? at http://www.cs.amherst.edu/~dac/lectures/tutorial.ps
We give an example of an algebraic torus $T$ such that the group $\operatorname{CH}^2(BT)_{\operatorname{tors}}$ is non-trivial. This answers a question of Blinstein and Merkurjev.
In this paper we will introduce a certain type of morphisms of log schemes (in the sense of Fontaine, Illusie, and Kato) and investigate their moduli. Then by applying this we define a notion of toric algebraic stacks over arbitrary schemes, which may be regarded as torus embeddings within the framework of algebraic stacks, and study some basic properties. Furthermore, we study the stack-theoretic analogue of toroidal embeddings.
We calculate the formal group law which represents the completion of the Néron model of an algebraic torus over the rationals that splits in a tamely ramified abelian extension. As a tools in the proof, we define and give criterions to compute the Weil restriction of a formal group law and the analog of the fixed part of a formal group law with respect to the action of a (finite) group.
The real solutions to a system of sparse polynomial equations may be realized as a fiber of a projection map from a toric variety. When the toric variety is orientable, the degree of this map is a lower bound for the number of real solutions to the system of equations. We strengthen previous work by characterizing when the toric variety is orientable. This is based on work of Nakayama and Nishimura, who characterized the orientability of smooth real toric varieties.
The author introduces the notion of a quantum form of an algebraic torus. In the case of diagonal algebraic torus we get the algebra of Laurent twisted polynomials. Quantum algebraic torus can be characterized in terms of exact sequences. The author study the center of QAT. In the case of roots of 1 the new examples of central simple algebras are constructed.
We investigate the structure of the Chow ring of the classifying stacks $BT$ of algebraic tori, as it has been defined by B. Totaro. Some previous work of N. Karpenko, A. Merkurjev, S. Blinstein and F. Scavia has shed some light on the structure of such rings. In particular Karpenko showed the absence of torsion classes in the case of permutation tori, while Merkurjev and Blinstein described in a very effective way the second Chow group $A^2(BT)$ in the general case. Building on this work, Scavia exhibited an example where $A^2(BT)_\text{tors}\neq 0$. Here, by making use of a very elementary a…
Let $k$ be a non-Archimedean rational valued field. We construct the moduli space of linearly rigidified polarized analytic tori over $k$ that admit rigid-analytic uniformization by an algebraic torus and observe that it is in definable rigid subanalytic bijection with a $PGL_N$-bundle over a polyhedral domain in an algebraic torus. We use this observation to prove that the Hrushovski-Kazhdan motivic volume of a non-Archimedean semi-algebraic family of Abelian varieties admitting such a uniformization fibrewise vanishes. This question is motivated by the conjectural geometric interpretation of…
Given a semi-algebraic set S, we study compactifications of S that arise from embeddings into complete toric varieties. This makes it possible to describe the asymptotic growth of polynomial functions on S in terms of combinatorial data. We extend our earlier work to compute the ring of bounded functions in this setting and discuss applications to positive polynomials and the moment problem. Complete results are obtained in special cases, like sets defined by binomial inequalities. We also show that the wild behaviour of certain examples constructed by Krug and by Mondal-Netzer cannot occur in…
Let $G$ be a smooth connected linear algebraic group and $X$ be a $G$-torsor. Totaro asked: if $X$ admits a zero-cycle of degree $d \geq 1$, then does $X$ have a closed étale point of degree dividing $d$? This question is entirely unexplored in the literature for algebraic tori. We settle Totaro's question affirmatively for algebraic tori of rank $\leq 2$.
We address a variant of Zariski Cancellation Problem, asking whether two varieties which become isomorphic after taking their product with an algebraic torus are isomorphic themselves. Such cancellation property is easily checked for curves, is known to hold for smooth varieties of log-general type by virtue of a result of Iitaka-Fujita, and more generally for varieties which are not dominantly covered by images of the punctured affine line. We show in contrast that cancellation fails in general in every dimension bigger or equal to two.
The first part of these notes gives an introduction to noncommutative projective geometry after Artin--Zhang. The second part provides an overview of the work of Polishchuk that reconciles noncommutative two-tori having real multiplication with the Artin--Zhang setting.
For any prime number $p$ and field $k$, we characterize the $p$-retract rationality of an algebraic $k$-torus in terms of its character lattice. We show that a $k$-torus is retract rational if and only if it is $p$-retract rational for every prime $p$, and that the Noether problem for retract rationality for a group of multiplicative type $G$ has an affirmative answer for $G$ if and only if the Noether problem for $p$-retract rationality for $G$ have a positive answer for all $p$. For every finite set of primes $S$ we give examples of tori that are $p$-retract rational if and only if $p\notin …
On an arbitrary toric variety, we introduce the logarithmic double complex, which is essentially the same as the algebraic de Rham complex in the nonsingular case, but which behaves much better in the singular case. Over the field of complex numbers, we prove the toric analog of the algebraic de Rham theorem which Grothendieck formulated and proved for general nonsingular algebraic varieties re-interpreting an earlier work of Hodge-Atiyah. Namely, for a finite simplicial fan which need not be complete, the complex cohomology groups of the corresponding toric variety as an analytic space coinci…
The problem of approximating the infinite dimensional space of all continuous maps from an algebraic variety $X$ to an algebraic variety $Y$ by finite dimensional spaces of algebraic maps arises in several areas of geometry and mathematical physics. An often considered formulation of the problem (sometimes called the Atiyah-Jones problem after \cite{AJ}) is to determine a (preferably optimal) integer $n_D$ such that the inclusion from this finite dimensional algebraic space into the corresponding infinite dimensional one induces isomorphisms of homology (or homotopy) groups through dimension $…
Minimal tori that are linearly full in the 3-sphere possess a natural invariant g called their spectral genus, which was introduced by Hitchin. We show that for each g>0, there are countably many real g-dimensional families of minimally immersed tori with spectral genus g (two of these dimensions are just reparametrisations of the torus). Each family maps from a fixed torus of rectangular conformal type.
We prove existence results that give information about the space of minimal immersions of 2-tori into $ S ^ 3 $. More specifically, we show that \begin{enumerate} \item For every positive integer $ n $, there are countably many real $n $-dimensional families of minimally immersed 2-tori in $ S ^ 3 $. Every linearly full minimal immersion $ T ^ 2\to S ^ 3 $ belongs to exactly one of these families. \item Let $ \mathcal A $ be the space of rectangular 2-tori. There is a countable dense subset $\mathcal B $ of $\mathcal A $ such that every torus in $\mathcal B$ can be minimally immersed into $ S …
Special class of surfaces in five-dimensional sphere in $C^3$ is considered. Immersion equations for minimal tori of that class are shown to be reducible to the equation $u_{z\bar z}=e^u-e^{-2u}$ which is integrable by means of inverse scattering method. Finite-gap minimal tori are constructed.
Let $M$ be a smooth complex projective toric variety equipped with an action of a torus $T$, such that the complement $D$ of the open $T$--orbit in $M$ is a simple normal crossing divisor. Let $G$ be a complex reductive affine algebraic group. We prove that an algebraic principal $G$--bundle $E_G\to M$ admits a $T$--equivariant structure if and only if $E_G$ admits a logarithmic connection singular over $D$. If $E_H\to M$ is a $T$-equivariant algebraic principal $H$--bundle, where $H$ is any complex affine algebraic group, then $E_H$ in fact has a canonical integrable logarithmic connection si…
This is a note on Beauville's problem (solved by Greb, Lehn and Rollenske in the non-algebraic case and by Hwang and Weiss in general) whether a lagrangian torus on an irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifold is a fiber of a lagrangian fibration. We provide a different, very short solution in the non-algebraic case and make some observations suggesting a different approach in the algebraic case.
The main purpose of this work is to give a constructive proof for a particular case of the no-name lemma. Let $G$ be a finite group, $K$ be a field, $L$ be a permutation $G$-lattice and $K[L]$ be the group algebra of $L$ over $K$. The no-name lemma asserts that the invariant field of the quotient field of $K[L]$, $K(L)^G$ is a purely transcendental extension of $K^G$. In other words, there exist $y_1, \ldots , y_n$ which are algebraically independent over $K^G$ such that $K(L)^G \cong K^G(y_1, \ldots , y_n)$. We define elements $\lbrace y_1, \ldots, y_n \rbrace \subset K[L]^G$ with the desired…
Classical toric varieties are among the simplest objects in algebraic geometry. They arise in an elementary fashion as varieties parametrized by monomials whose exponents are a finite subset $\mathcal{A}$ of $\mathbb{Z}^n$. They may also be constructed from a rational fan $Σ$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$. The combinatorics of the set $\mathcal{A}$ or fan $Σ$ control the geometry of the associated toric variety. These toric varieties have an action of an algebraic torus with a dense orbit. Applications of algebraic geometry in geometric modeling and algebraic statistics have long studied the nonnegative r…
We give the complete stably rational classification of algebraic tori of dimensions $4$ and $5$ over a field $k$. In particular, the stably rational classification of norm one tori whose Chevalley modules are of rank $4$ and $5$ is given. We show that there exist exactly $487$ (resp. $7$, resp. $216$) stably rational (resp. not stably but retract rational, resp. not retract rational) algebraic tori of dimension $4$, and there exist exactly $3051$ (resp. $25$, resp. $3003$) stably rational (resp. not stably but retract rational, resp. not retract rational) algebraic tori of dimension $5$. We ma…
A class of noncommutative spaces, named `soft noncommutative schemes via toric geometry', are constructed and the mathematical model for (dynamical/nonsolitonic, complex algebraic) D-branes on such a noncommutative space, following arXiv:0709.1515 [math.AG] (D(1)), is given. Any algebraic Calabi-Yau space that arises from a complete intersection in a smooth toric variety can embed as a commutative closed subscheme of some soft noncommutative scheme. Along the study, the notion of `soft noncommutative toric schemes' associated to a (simplicial, maximal cone of index $1$) fan, `invertible sheave…
Let X be a smooth projective variety of dimension n. If $p+q=n+1$ then Bloch has defined a ${\bf G}_m$-biextension E over the product of the Chow groups $CH^p_0(X)$ and $CH^q_0(X)$ of homologically trivial cycles. We prove that E is the pullback of the Poincare biextension over the product of intermediate Jacobians in characteristic zero. This is used to study various equivalence relations for algebraic cycles. In particular we reprove Murres result that Griffiths conjecture holds for codimension two cycles, i.e. every codim. two cycle algebraically and incidence equivalent to zero has torsion…
In the theory of algebraic group actions on affine varieties, the concept of a Kempf-Ness set is used to replace the categorical quotient by the quotient with respect to a maximal compact subgroup. By making use of the recent achievements of "toric topology" we show that an appropriate notion of a Kempf-Ness set exists for a class of algebraic torus actions on quasiaffine varieties (coordinate subspace arrangement complements) arising in the Batyrev-Cox "geometric invariant theory" approach to toric varieties. We proceed by studying the cohomology of these "toric" Kempf-Ness sets. In the case …
The propagation differential for bosonic strings on a complex torus with three symmetric punctures is investigated. We study deformation aspects between two point and three point differentials as well as the behaviour of the corresponding Krichever-Novikov algebras. The structure constants are calculated and from this we derive a central extension of the Krichever-Novikov algebras by means of b-c systems. The defining cocycle for this central extension deforms to the well known Virasoro cocycle for certain kinds of degenerations of the torus. AMS subject classification (1991): 17B66, 17B90, 14…
We construct an explicit Deligne - Du Bois complex for algebraic varieties which are locally analytically isomorphic to the spectrum of a toric face ring.
We study tori attached to the fundamental groups of plane curves with arbitrary singularities. These tori provide complete information about homology of finite abelian covers of the plane branched along the curve. We calculate these tori in terms of certain linear systems determined by the singularities of the curve. In the case of the complements to a union of lines they can be calculated from the lattice of the arrangement and are closely related to the components of the space of Aomoto complexes with prescribed homology.
Let (M,g) be a compact, connected riemannian manifold that is homogeneous, i.e. each pair of points p,q in M have isometric neighborhoods. This paper is a first step towards an understanding of the extent to which it is true that for each "generic" initial condition f0, the solution to the Heat Equation is such that for sufficiently large t, f(.,t) is a minimal Morse function, i.e., a Morse function whose total number of critical points is the minimal possible on M. In this paper we show that this is true for flat tori and round spheres in all dimensions.
We treat equivariant completions of toric contraction morphisms as an application of the toric Mori theory. For this purpose, we generalize the toric Mori theory for non-$\mathbb Q$-factorial toric varieties. So, our theory seems to be quite different from Reid's original combinatorial toric Mori theory. We also explain various examples of non-$\mathbb Q$-factorial contractions, which imply that the $\mathbb Q$-factoriality plays an important role in the Minimal Model Program. Thus, this paper completes the foundations of the toric Mori theory and show us a new aspect of the Minimal Model Prog…
This article shows that every non-isotropic harmonic 2-torus in complex projective space factors through a generalised Jacobi variety related to the spectral curve. Each map is composed of a homomorphism into the variety and a rational map off it. The same ideas allow one to construct (pluri)-harmonic maps of finite type from Euclidean space into Grassmannians and the projective unitary groups. Further, some of these maps will be purely algebraic. For maps into complex projective space the algebraic maps of the plane are always doubly periodic i.e. they yield 2-tori. The classification of all …
