We review some cohomological aspects of complex and hypercomplex manifolds and underline the differences between both realms. Furthermore, we try to highlight the similarities between compact complex surfaces on one hand and compact hypercomplex manifolds of real dimension 8 with holonomy of the Obata connection in SL(2,H) on the other hand.
A hypercomplex structure $(I,J,K)$ on a manifold $M$ is said to be $C^\infty$-pure-and-full if the Dolbeault cohomology $H^{2,0}_{\partial}(M,I)$ is the direct sum of two natural subgroups called the $\bar{J}$-invariant and the $\bar{J}$-anti-invariant subgroups. We prove that a compact hypercomplex manifold that satisfies the quaternionic version of the $dd^c$-Lemma is $C^\infty$-pure-and-full. Moreover, we study the dimensions of the $\bar{J}$-invariant and the $\bar{J}$-anti-invariant subgroups, together with their analogue in the Bott-Chern cohomology. For instance, in real dimension 8, we…
In this paper we initiate the study of submanifolds of almost hypercomplex manifolds with Hermitian and Norden metrics. Object of investigations are holomorphic submanifolds of the hypercomplex manifolds which are locally conformally equivalent to the hyper-Kähler manifolds of the considered type. Necessary and sufficient conditions the investigated holomorphic submanifolds to be totally umbilical or totally geodesic are obtained. Examples of the examined submanifolds are constructed.
The object of investigations are almost hypercomplex structures with Hermitian-Norden metrics on 4-dimensional Lie groups considered as smooth manifolds. There are studied both the basic classes of a classification of 4-dimensional indecomposable real Lie algebras depending on two parameters. Some geometric characteristics of the respective almost hypercomplex manifolds with Hermitian-Norden metrics are obtained.
There are studied Lie groups considered as almost hypercomplex Hermitian-Norden manifolds, which are integrable and have the lowest dimension four. It is established a correspondence of the derived Lie algebras of types of invariant hypercomplex structures and the explicit matrix representation of their Lie groups. There are constructed examples of the considered structure of different types on some known Lie groups.
Almost hypercomplex pseudo-Hermitian manifolds are considered. Isotropic hyper-Kähler manifolds are introduced. A 4-parametric family of 4-dimensional manifolds of this type is constructed on a Lie group. This family is characterized geometrically. The condition a 4-manifold to be isotropic hyper-Kähler is given.
In this paper, a lot of examples of four-dimensional manifolds with an almost hypercomplex pseudo-Hermitian structure are constructed in several explicit ways. The received 4-manifolds are characterized by their linear invariants in the known aspects.
Object of investigation are almost hypercomplex manifolds with Hermitian-Norden metrics of the lowest dimension. The considered manifolds are constructed on 4-dimensional Lie groups. It is established a relation between the classes of a classification of 4-dimensional indecomposable real Lie algebras and the classification of the manifolds under study. The basic geometrical characteristics of the constructed manifolds are studied in the frame of the mentioned classification of the Lie algebras.
Given a quaternionic manifold $M$ with a certain $\mathrm{U}(1)$-symmetry, we construct a hypercomplex manifold $M'$ of the same dimension. This construction generalizes the quaternionic Kähler/hyper-Kähler-correspondence. As an example of this construction, we obtain a compact homogeneous hypercomplex manifold which does not admit any hyper-Kähler structure. Therefore our construction is a proper generalization of the quaternionic Kähler/hyper-Kähler-correspondence.
The class of the hypercomplex pseudo-Hermitian manifolds is considered. The flatness of the considered manifolds with the 3 parallel complex structures is proved. Conformal transformations of the metrics are introduced. The conformal invariance and the conformal equivalence of the basic types manifolds are studied. A known example is characterized in relation to the obtained results.
A hypercomplex structure on a differentiable manifold consists of three integrable almost complex structures that satisfy quaternionic relations. If, in addition, there exists a metric on the manifold which is Hermitian with respect to the three structures, and such that the corresponding Hermitian forms are closed, the manifold is said to be hyperkaehler. In the paper "Non-Hermitian Yang-Mills connections", Kaledin and Verbitsky proved that the twistor space of a hyperkaehler manifold admits a balanced metric; these were first studied in the article "On the existence of special metrics in com…
Almost hypercomplex manifolds with Hermitian and anti-Hermitian metrics are considered. A linear connection $D$ is introduced such that the structure of these manifolds is parallel with respect to D. Of special interest is the class of the locally conformally equivalent manifolds of the manifolds with covariantly constant almost complex structures and the case when the torsion of D is D-parallel. Curvature properties of these manifolds are studied. An example of 4-dimensional manifolds in the considered basic class is constructed and characterized.
The tangent bundle of an almost Norden manifold and the complete lift of the Norden metric is considered as a 4n-manifold. It is equipped with an almost hypercomplex Hermitian-Norden structure. It is characterized geometrically. The case when the base manifold is an h-sphere is considered.
Given a hypercomplex manifold with a rotating vector field (and additional data), we construct a conical hypercomplex manifold. As a consequence, we associate a quaternionic manifold to a hypercomplex manifold of the same dimension with a rotating vector field. This is a generalization of the HK/QK-correspondence. As an application, we show that a quaternionic manifold can be associated to a conical special complex manifold of half its dimension. Furthermore, a projective special complex manifold (with a canonical c-projective structure) associates with a quaternionic manifold. The latter is a…
An associated Nijenhuis tensor of endomorphisms in the tangent bundle is introduced. Special attention is paid to such tensors for an almost hypercomplex structure and the metric of Hermitian-Norden type. There are studied relations between the six associated Nijenhuis tensors as well as their vanishing. It is given a geometric interpretation of the vanishing of these tensors as a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a unique connection with totally skew-symmetric torsion tensor. Similar idea is used in the paper of T. Friedrich and S. Ivanov in Asian J. Math. (2002) for som…
We study generalized complex cohomologies of generalized complex structures constructed from certain symplectic fibre bundles over complex manifolds. We apply our results in the case of left-invariant generalized complex structures on nilmanifolds and to their space of small deformations.
The tangent bundle as a $4n$-manifold is equipped with an almost hypercomplex pseudo-Hermitian structure and it is characterized with respect to the relevant classifications. A number of 8-dimensional examples of the considered type of manifold are received from the known explicit examples in that manner.
Tubular neighborhoods play an important role in differential topology. We have applied these constructions to geometry of almost Hermitian manifolds. At first, we consider deformations of tensor structures on a normal tubular neighborhood of a submanifold in a Riemannian manifold.Further, an almost hyperHermitian structure has been constructed on the tangent bundle TM with help of the Riemannian connection of an almost Hermitian structure on a manifold M then, we consider an embedding of the almost Hermitian manifold M in the corresponding normal tubular neighborhood of the null section in the…
We prove that, for some classes of complex nilmanifolds, the Bott-Chern cohomology is completely determined by the Lie algebra associated to the nilmanifold with the induced complex structure. We use these tools to compute the Bott-Chern and Aeppli cohomologies of the Iwasawa manifold and of its small deformations, completing the computations in arXiv:0709.3528v1 [math.AG] by M. Schweitzer.
A hypercomplex manifold is a manifold equipped with a triple of complex structures $I, J, K$ satisfying the quaternionic relations. We define a quaternionic analogue of plurisubharmonic functions on hypercomplex manifolds, and interpret these functions geometrically as potentials of HKT (hyperkähler with torsion) metrics, and prove a quaternionic analogue of A.D. Aleksandrov and Chern-Levine-Nirenberg theorems.
Let $F^{2n}=(M,M',F^{\ast})$ be an even-dimensional pseudo-Finsler manifold. We construct an almost hypercomplex structure on any chart domain of a certain atlas of $M'$ by using a considered non-linear connection. Then by using the almost hypercomplex structure we define two new families of Finsler connections. Also we show that for any Finsler connection $\nabla$ there exists a linear connection $D$ such that the local almost hypercomplex structure is parallel with respect to it.
A hypercomplex manifold is a manifold equipped with a triple of complex structures satisfying the quaternionic relations. A holomorphic Lagrangian variety on a hypercomplex manifold with trivial canonical bundle is a holomorphic subvariety which is calibrated by a form associated with the holomorphic volume form; this notion is a generalization of the usual holomorphic Lagrangian subvarieties known in hyperkaehler geometry. An HKT (hyperkaehler with torsion) metric on a hypercomplex manifold is a metric determined by a local potential, in a similar way to the Kaehler metric. We prove that a ba…
A twist construction for manifolds with torus action is described generalising certain T-duality examples and constructions in hypercomplex geometry. It is applied to complex, SKT, hypercomplex and HKT manifolds to construct compact simply-connected examples. In particular, we find hypercomplex manifolds that admit no compatible HKT metric, and HKT manifolds whose Obata connection has holonomy contained in $SL(n,\mathbb H)$.
We review the map between hypercomplex manifolds that admit a closed homothetic Killing vector (i.e. `conformal hypercomplex' manifolds) and quaternionic manifolds of 1 dimension less. This map is related to a method for constructing supergravity theories using superconformal techniques. An explicit relation between the structure of these manifolds is presented, including curvatures and symmetries. An important role is played by `ξtransformations', relating connections on quaternionic manifolds, and a new type `\hatξtransformations' relating complex structures on conformal hypercomplex manifol…
A manifold (M,I,J,K) is called hypercomplex if I,J,K are complex structures satisfying quaternionic relations. A quaternionic Hermitian metric is called HKT (hyperkaehler with torsion) if $Idω_I = Jd ω_J=Kdω_K$, where $ω_I,ω_J, ω_K$ are Hermitian forms associated with I, J, K. A Hermitian metric $ω$ on a complex manifold is called balanced if $d^*ω=0$. We show that balanced HKT metrics are precisely the quaternionic Calabi-Yau metrics defined in terms of the quaternionic Monge-Ampere equation. In particular, a balanced HKT-metric is unique in its cohomology class, and it always exists if the q…
Let (M,I,J,K) be a compact hypercomplex manifold admitting an HKT-metric. Assume that the canonical bundle of (M,I) is trivial as a holomorphic line bundle. We show that the holonomy of Obata connection on M is contained in SL(n,H). In Appendix we apply these arguments to compact nilmanifolds equipped with abelian hypercomplex structures, showing that such manifolds have holonomy in SL(n,H).
A sharp vanishing theorem for the $L^p$ cohomology torsion of Riemannian manifolds with pinched negative curvature is given. It follows that certain negatively curved homogeneous spaces cannot be quasiisometric to better pinched manifolds.
We classify homogeneous pseudo-Riemannian manifolds of index 4 which admit an invariant almost hyper-Hermitian structure and an H-irreducible isotropy group. The main result is that all these spaces are flat except in dimension 12.
In this paper we define coeffective de Rham cohomology for basic forms on a $K$--contact or Sasakian manifold $M$ and we discuss its relation with usually basic cohomology of $M$. When $M$ is of finite type (for instance it is compact) several inequalities relating some basic coeffective numbers to classical basic Betti numbers of $M$ are obtained. In the case of Sasakian manifolds, we define and study coeffective Dolbeault and Bott-Chern cohomologies for basic forms. Also, in this case, we prove some Hodge decomposition theorems for coeffective basic de Rham cohomology, relating this cohomolo…
In this paper we relate the cohomology of $J$-invariant forms to the Dolbeault cohomology of an almost complex manifold. We find necessary and sufficient condition for the inclusion of the former into the latter to be true up to isomorphism. We also extend some results obtained by J. Cirici and S.O. Wilson about the computation of the left-invariant cohomology of nilmanifolds to the setting of solvmanifolds. Several examples are given.
A hypercomplex manifold is a manifold equipped with three complex structures I, J, K satisfying the quaternionic relations. Let M be a 4-dimensional compact smooth manifold equipped with a hypercomplex structure, and E be a vector bundle on M. We show that the moduli space of anti-self-dual connections on E is also hypercomplex, and admits a strong HKT metric. We also study manifolds with (4,4)-supersymmetry, that is, Riemannian manifolds equipped with a pair of strong HKT-structures that have opposite torsion. In the language of Hitchin's and Gualtieri's generalized complex geometry, (4,4)-ma…
Let (M,I) be a compact Kaehler manifold admitting a hypercomplex structure. We show that (M, I) admits a natural HKT-metric. This is used to construct a holomorphic symplectic form on (M,I).
We characterize HKT structure in terms of nondegenrate complex Poisson bivector on hypercomplex manifold. We extend the characterization to the twistor space. After considering the flat case in detail, we show that the twistor space of hyperkaehler manifold admits a holomorphic Poisson structure. We briefly mention the relation to quaternionic and hypercomplex deformations on tori and K3 surfaces
We review the general properties of target spaces of hypermultiplets, which are quaternionic-like manifolds, and discuss the relations between these manifolds and their symmetry generators. We explicitly construct a one-to-one map between conformal hypercomplex manifolds (i.e. those that have a closed homothetic Killing vector) and quaternionic manifolds of one quaternionic dimension less. An important role is played by 'ξ-transformations', relating complex structures on conformal hypercomplex manifolds and connections on quaternionic manifolds. In this map, the subclass of conformal hyper-Kae…
Let $(X, J)$ be a complex manifold with a non-degenerated smooth $d$-closed $(1,1)$-form $ω$. Then we have a natural double complex $\overline{\partial}+\overline{\partial}^Λ$, where $\overline{\partial}^Λ$ denotes the symplectic adjoint of the $\overline{\partial}$-operator. We study the Hard Lefschetz Condition on the Dolbeault cohomology groups of $X$ with respect to the symplectic form $ω$. In \cite{TW}, we proved that such a condition is equivalent to a certain symplectic analogous of the $\partial\overline{\partial}$-Lemma, namely the $\overline{\partial}\, \overline{\partial}^Λ$-Lemma, …
Unit tangent bundles $UM$ of semi-Riemannian manifolds $M$ are shown to be examples of dynamical Legendrian contact structures, which were defined in recent work [25] of Sykes-Zelenko to generalize leaf spaces of 2-nondegenerate CR manifolds. In doing so, Sykes-Zelenko extended the classification in Porter-Zelenko [20] of regular, 2-nondegenerate CR structures to those that can be recovered from their leaf space. The present paper treats dynamical Legendrian contact structures associated with 2-nondegenerate CR structures which were called "strongly regular" in Porter-Zelenko, named "L-contact…
We discuss the Euclidean limit of hyperbolic SU(2)-monopoles, framed at infinity, from the point of view of pluricomplex geometry. More generally, we discuss the geometry of hypercomplex manifolds arising as limits of pluricomplex manifolds.
A hypercomplex manifold $M$ is a manifold equipped with three complex structures satisfying quaternionic relations. Such a manifold admits a canonical torsion-free connection preserving the quaternion action, called Obata connection. A quaternionic Hermitian metric is a Riemannian metric on which is invariant with respect to unitary quaternions. Such a metric is called HKT if it is locally obtained as a Hessian of a function averaged with quaternions. HKT metric is a natural analogue of a Kahler metric on a complex manifold. We push this analogy further, proving a quaternionic analogue of Buch…
In this paper we show how hypercomplex function theoretical objects can be used to construct explicitly self-dual SU(2)-Yang-Mills instanton solutions on certain classes of conformally flat 4-manifolds. We use a hypercomplex argument principle to establish a natural link between the fundamental solutions of $D Δf = 0$ and the second Chern class of the SU(2) principal bundles over these manifolds. The considered base manifolds of the bundles are not simply-connected, in general. Actually, this paper summarizes an extension of the corresponding results of Gürsey and Tze on a hyper-complex analyt…
We give a topological interpretation of the space of $L^2$ harmonis forms of some QALE manifolds introduced by D. Joyce. We introduce a analytical criterium which make possible the used of Mayer-Vietoris sequence.
We consider several differential operators on compact almost-complex, almost-Hermitian and almost-Kähler manifolds. We discuss Hodge Theory for these operators and a possible cohomological interpretation. We compare the associated spaces of harmonic forms and cohomologies with the classical de Rham, Dolbeault, Bott-Chern and Aeppli cohomologies.
A hypercomplex manifold M is a manifold with a triple I,J,K of complex structure operators satisfying quaternionic relations. For each quaternion L=aI +bJ+cK, L^2=-1, L is also a complex structure operator on M, called an induced complex structure. We are studying compact complex subvarieties of (M,L), when L is a generic induced complex structure. Under additional assumptions (Obata holonomy contained in SL(n,H), existence of an HKT metric), we prove that (M,L) contains no divisors, and all complex subvarieties of codimension 2 are trianalytic (that is, also hypercomplex).
The subject of investigations are the almost hypercomplex manifolds with Hermitian and anti-Hermitian (Norden) metrics. A linear connection D is introduced such that the structure of these manifolds is parallel with respect to D and its torsion is totally skew-symmetric. The class of the nearly Kaehler manifolds with respect to the first almost complex structure is of special interest. It is proved that D has a D-parallel torsion and is weak if it is not flat. Some curvature properties of these manifolds are studied.
We study quaternionic Bott-Chern cohomology on compact hypercomplex manifolds and adapt some results from complex geometry to the quaternionic setting. For instance, we prove a criterion for the existence of HKT metrics on compact hypercomplex manifolds of real dimension 8 analogous to the one given by Teleman [35] and Angella-Dloussky-Tomassini [3] for compact complex surfaces.
We study the Morse-Novikov cohomology and its almost-symplectic counterpart on manifolds admitting locally conformally symplectic structures. More precisely, we introduce lcs cohomologies and we study elliptic Hodge theory, dualities, Hard Lefschetz Condition. We consider solvmanifolds and Oeljeklaus-Toma manifolds. In particular, we prove that Oeljeklaus-Toma manifolds with precisely one complex place, and under an additional arithmetic condition, satisfy the Mostow property. This holds in particular for the Inoue surface of type $S^0$.
A nilmanifold is a (left) quotient of a nilpotent Lie group by a cocompact lattice. A hypercomplex structure on a manifold is a triple of complex structure operators satisfying the quaternionic relations. A hypercomplex nilmanifold is a compact quotient of a nilpotent Lie group equipped with a left-invariant hypercomplex structure. Such a manifold admits a whole 2-dimensional sphere $S^2$ of complex structures induced by quaternions. We prove that for any hypercomplex nilmanifold $M$ and a generic complex structure $L\in S^2$, the complex manifold $(M,L)$ has algebraic dimension 0. A stronger …
We study cohomologies on an almost complex manifold $(M, J)$, defined using the Nijenhuis-Lie derivations $\mathcal{L}_J$ and $\mathcal{L}_N$ induced from the almost complex structure $J$ and its Nijenhuis tensor $N$, regarded as vector-valued forms on $M$. We show how one of these, the $N$-cohomology $H^{\bullet}_N (M)$, can be used to distinguish non-isomorphic non-integrable almost complex structures on $M$. Another one, the $J$-cohomology $H^{\bullet}_J (M)$, is familiar in the integrable case but we extend its definition and applicability to the case of non-integrable almost complex struc…
We try to generalize the Poisson cohomology of a 2-dimensional Poisson manifold to the n-vectors on a n-dimensional manifold. We define several cohomologies and we compute locally some of them, in the case of germs at 0 of n-vectors on a real or complex vector field of dimension n.
We obtain a complete classification of hypercomplex manifolds, on which a compact group of automorphisms acts transitively. The description of the spaces as well as the proofs of our results use only the structure theory of reductive groups, in particular the notion of "stem" of a reduced root system, introduced in the first paper of this series.
We show certain symmetry of the dimensions of cohomologies of the funda- mental groups of compact Sasakian manifolds by using the Hodge theory of twisted basic cohomology. As applications, we show that the polycyclic fundamental groups of compact Sasakian manifolds are virtually nilpotent and Sasakian solvmanifolds are finite quotients of Heisenberg nilmanifolds.
In this article, we summarize our recent results on the study of manifolds with special holonomy via the Frölicher-Nijenhuis bracket. This bracket enables us to define the Frölicher-Nijenhuis cohomologies which are analogues of the $d^c$ and the Dolbeault cohomologies in Kähler geometry, and assigns an $L_\infty$-algebra to each associative submanifold. We provide several concrete computations of the Frölicher-Nijenhuis cohomology.
