Besides the target to pursue the narrow bandwidth X-ray pulses, the large bandwidth free-electron laser pulses are also strongly demanded to satisfy a wide range of scientific user experiments. In this paper, using the transversely tilt beam enabled by deflecting cavity and/or corrugated structure, the potential of large bandwidth X-ray free-electron lasers generation with the natural gradient of the planar undulator are discussed. Simulations confirm the theoretical prediction, and X-ray free-electron laser bandwidth indicates an increase of one order of magnitude with the optimized parameters.
The generation of frequency-tunable, narrow-bandwidth and carrier-envelope-phase stable THz pulses with fields in the MV/cm regime that can be appropriately timed to the femtosecond X-ray pulses from free-electron-lasers is of highest scientific interest. It will enable to follow the electronic and structural dynamics stimulated by (non)linear selective excitations of matter on few femtosecond time and Ångstrom length scales. In this article, a scheme based on superradiant undulator radiation generated just after the XFEL is proposed. The concept utilizes cutting edge superconducting undulator…
In free electron laser facilities, almost every kind of device will generate wakefield when an electron beam passes through it. Most of the wakefields are undesired and have a negative effect on the electron beam, which means a decrease of FEL performance. As for the SXFEL test facility, the sophisticated layout and the cumulative effect of such a long undulator section lead to an obvious wakefield, which is strong enough that can not be ignored. Based on two deflecting cavities at the entrance and the exit of the undulator section with corresponding profile monitors, we measured the wakefield…
We show the feasibility of generating X-ray pulses in the 4 to 8 keV fundamental photon energy range with 0.65 TW peak power, 15 fs pulse duration, $9\times10^{-5}$ bandwidth, using the LCLS-II copper linac and hard X-ray (HXR) undulator. Third harmonic pulses with 8-12 GW peak power and narrow bandwidth are also generated. High power and small bandwidth X-rays are obtained using two electron bunches separated by about 1 ns, one to generate a high power seed signal, the other to amplify it by tapering the magnetic field of the HXR undulator. The bunch delay is compensated by delaying the seed …
Improving the energy-extraction efficiency of laser-plasma accelerator driven free-electron laser using transverse-gradient undulator with focusing optics and longitudinal tapering
Nonlinear Compton scattering is a promising source of bright gamma-rays. Using readily available intense laser pulses to scatter off the energetic electrons on the one hand allows to significantly increase the total photon yield, but on the other hand leads to a dramatic spectral broadening of fundamental emission line as well as its harmonics due to the laser pulse shape induced ponderomotive effects. In this paper we propose to avoid ponderomotive broadening in harmonics by using the polarization gating technique - a well-known method to construct a laser pulse with temporally varying polari…
