Robb and Bonifacio (2011) claimed that a previously neglected quantum effect results in noticeable changes in the evolution of the energy distribution associated with spontaneous emission in long undulators. They revisited theoretical models used to describe the emission of radiation by relativistic electrons as a continuous diffusive process, and claimed that in the asymptotic limit for a large number of undulator periods the evolution of the electron energy distribution occurs as discrete energy groups according to Poisson distribution. We show that these novel results have no physical sense, because they are based on a one-dimensional model of spontaneous emission and assume that electrons are sheets of charge. However, electrons are point-like particles and, as is well-known, the bandwidth of the angular-integrated spectrum of undulator radiation is independent of the number of undulator periods. If we determine the evolution of the energy distribution using a three-dimensional theory we find the well-known results consistent with a continuous diffusive process. The additional pedagogical purpose of this paper is to review how quantum diffusion of electron energy in an undulator with small undulator parameter can be simply analyzed using the Thomson cross-section expression, unlike the conventional treatment based on the expression for the Lienard-Wiechert fields.
We discuss the radiation generated by positrons channeling in a crystalline undulator. The undulator is produced by periodically bending a single crystal with an amplitude much larger than the interplanar spacing. Different approaches for bending the crystal are described and the restrictions on the parameters of the bending are discussed. We also present numeric calculations of the spontaneous emitted radiation and estimate the conditions for stimulated emission. Our investigations show that the proposed mechanism could be an interesting source for high energy photons and is worth to be studi…
We present results of an experiment where, using a 200 GW CO2 laser seed, a 65 MeV electron beam was decelerated down to 35 MeV in a 54 cm long strongly tapered helical magnetic undulator, extracting over 30$\%$ of the initial electron beam energy to coherent radiation. These results demonstrate unparalleled electro-optical conversion efficiencies for a relativistic beam in an undulator field and represent an important step in the development of high peak and average power coherent radiation sources.
This paper discusses the undulator radiation emitted by high-energy positrons during planar channeling in periodically bent crystals. We demonstrate that the construction of the undulator for positrons with energies of 10 GeV and above is only possible if one takes into account the radiative energy losses. The frequency of the undulator radiation depends on the energy of the particle. Thus the decrease of the particle's energy during the passage of the crystal should result in the destruction of the undulator radiation regime. However, we demonstrate that it is possible to avoid the destructiv…

In arXiv:1202.0691, Geloni et al. criticise our recent work describing the spontaneous emission by a relativistic, undulating electron beam. In particular they claim that our prediction of a quantum regime in which evolution of the electron momentum distribution occurs as a sequential population of discrete momentum groups rather than in terms of a drift-diffusion process is unphysical and artificial. We show that the criticism of our model contained in arXiv:1202.0691 is unfounded.
The spectral distribution of spontaneous emission of electrons moving in a plane wiggler with inhomogeneous magnetic field is calculated. We show that electrons do complicated motion consisting of slow(strophotron) and fast(undulator) parts. The equations of motion are averaged over fast undulator part and we obtain equations for connected motion. It is shown, that the account of inhomogenity of the magnetic field leads to appearance of additional peaks in the spectral distribution of spontaneous radiation.
We present the results of numerical calculations of the channelling and undulator radiation generated by an ultra-relativistic positron channelling along a crystal plane, which is periodically bent. The bending might be due either to the propagation of a transverse acoustic wave through the crystal, or due to the static strain as it occurs in superlattices. The periodically bent crystal serves as an undulator. We investigate the dependence of the intensities of both the ordinary channelling and the undulator radiations on the parameters of the periodically bent channel with simultaneous accoun…
The experimental device for generation of undulator radiation in terahertz wavelength region by use of undulator on ferromagnets is created. The device is based on a beam of a microtrone with the energy 7.5 MeV. The radiation wavelength is 200 micron. Registered spontaneous radiation has a power of 10 microwatt at a current of a beam 2 mA in a pulse. With the optical resonator, in a mode, the amplification of 6 percent is received, that in some times is more than expected value. This effect is explained as a result of partial coherence of radiation.
We discuss the features of a crystalline undulator of the novel type based on the effect of a planar channeling of ultra-relativistic electrons in a periodically bent crystals. It is demonstrated that an electron-based undulator is feasible in the tens of GeV range of the beam energies, which is noticeably higher than the energy interval allowed in a positron-based undulator. Numerical analysis of the main parameters of the undulator as well as the characteristics of the emitted undulator radiation is carried out for 20 and 50 GeV electrons channeling in diamond and silicon crystals along the …
We show that a short relativistic electron beam propagating in a plasma with a density gradient perpendicular to the direction of motion generates a wakefield in which a witness bunch experiences a transverse force. A density gradient oscillating along the beam path would create a periodically varying force---an undulator, with an estimated strength of the equivalent magnetic field more than ten Tesla. This opens an avenue for creation of a high-strength, short-period undulators, which eventually may lead to all-plasma, free electron lasers where a plasma wakefield acceleration is naturally co…
The electromagnetic radiation generated by ultra-relativistic positrons channelling in a crystalline undulator is discussed. The crystalline undulator is a crystal whose planes are bent periodically with the amplitude much larger than the interplanar spacing. Various conditions and criteria to be fulfilled for the crystalline undulator operation are established. Different methods of the crystal bending are described. We present the results of numeric calculations of spectral distributions of the spontaneous radiation emitted in the crystalline undulator and discuss the possibility to create th…
The feasibility to generate powerful monochromatic radiation of the undulator type in the gamma region of the spectrum by means of planar channeling of ultra-relativistic electrons in a periodically bent crystal is proven. It is shown that an electron-based crystalline undulator operates in the regime of higher beam energies than a positron-based one does. A numerical analysis is performed for a 50 GeV electron channeling in Si along the (111) crystallographic planes.
The radiation of relativistic charged particles for the quasiperiodic motion in a transparent medium is considered. For motion of the general kind the differential probability of the process is obtained. For planar motion the spectral intensity of radiation is found. The different cases of radiation in the medium-filled undulators are studied. In particular, the influence of Cherenkov radiation on the undulator one is discussed.

The scheme for accurate quantitative treatment of the radiation from a crystalline undulator in presence of the dechanneling and the photon attenuation is presented. The number of emitted photons and the brilliance of electromagnetic radiation generated by ultra-relativistic positrons channeling in a crystalline undulator are calculated for various crystals, positron energies and different bending parameters. It is demonstrated that with the use of high-energy positron beams available at present in modern colliders it is possible to generate the crystalline undulator radiation with energies fr…
Besides the original seeded undulator line, in the Soft X-ray free-electron laser (SXFEL) user facility at Shanghai, a second undulator line based on self-amplified spontaneous emission is proposed to achieve 2 nm laser pulse with extremely high brightness. In this paper, the beam energy deviation induced by the undulator wakefields is numerically obtained, and it is verified to have a good agreement between 3D and 2D simulation results. The beam energy loss along the undulator degrades the expected FEL output performance. Impact of wakefields on pulse energy, radiation power and spectrum is d…
We report a novel method for evaluating the energy spectrum of electrons emitting hard x-rays and gamma-rays in undulators and Compton sources. The method takes into account the quantum nature of recoils undergone by the electrons emitting high energy photons. The method is susceptible to evaluate a spectrum of electrons for the whole range of the emission rates per electron-pass through of the driving force, from much less than one emitted photon on average (Compton sources and short undulators) to many emitted photons (long undulators, relatively low-energy electrons). As shown in the former…
The LUX beamline is a novel type of laser-plasma accelerator. Building on the joint expertise of the University of Hamburg and DESY the beamline was carefully designed to combine state-of-the-art expertise in laser-plasma acceleration with the latest advances in accelerator technology and beam diagnostics. LUX introduces a paradigm change moving from single-shot demonstration experiments towards available, stable and controllable accelerator operation. Here, we discuss the general design concepts of LUX and present first critical milestones that have recently been achieved, including the gener…
We suggest a new type of the undulator radiation which is generated by an ultra-relativistic particle channeled along a periodically bent crystallographic plane or axis. The electromagnetic radiation arises mainly due to the bending of the particle's trajectory, which follows the shape of the channel. The parameters of this undulator, which totally define the spectrum and the angular distribution of the radiation (both spontaneous and stimulated), depend on the type of the crystal and the crystallographic plane (axis), on the type of a projectile and its energy, and on the shape of the bent ch…
Generally, turn-to-turn power fluctuations of incoherent spontaneous synchrotron radiation in a storage ring depend on the 6D phase-space distribution of the electron bunch. In some cases, if only one parameter of the distribution is unknown, this parameter can be determined from the measured magnitude of these power fluctuations. In this Letter, we report an absolute measurement (no free parameters or calibration) of a small vertical emittance (5--15 nm rms) of a flat beam by this method, under conditions, when it is unresolvable by a conventional synchrotron light beam size monitor.
In the baseline design of the International Linear Collider (ILC) an undulator-based source is foreseen for the positron source in order to match the physics requirements. The baseline parameters are optimized for the ILC at sqrt(s)=500 GeV, that means an electron drive beam of 250 GeV. Precision measurements in the Higgs sector, however, require measurements at sqrt(s)=250 GeV, i.e. running with the electron drive beam only at 125 GeV, which imposes a challenge for achieving a high yield. Therefore the baseline undulator parameters have to be optimized as much as possible within their technic…
We study turn-by-turn fluctuations in the number of spontaneously emitted photons from an undulator, installed in the Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA) electron storage ring at Fermilab. A theoretical model is presented, showing the relative contributions due to the discrete nature of light emission and to the incoherent sum of fields from different electrons in the bunch. The model is compared with a previous experiment at Brookhaven and with new experiments we carried out at IOTA. Our experiments focused on the case of a large number of longitudinal and transverse radiation modes, a …
High power ($\sim 100$ kW) industrial electron linear accelerators (linacs) are used for irradiation applications e.g., for pasteurization of food products, disinfection of medical waste, etc. We propose that high power electron beam from such an industrial linac can be first passed through an undulator to generate powerful terahertz (THz) radiation, and the spent electron beam coming out of the undulator can still be used for industrial applications. This will enhance the utilisation of a high power industrial linac. We have performed calculation of spontaneous emission in the undulator to sh…
We predict peculiar changes in spectral distributions of radiation emitted by ultra-relativistic positrons and electrons in periodically bent crystals with variation of the bending amplitude. It is shown that the changes, being sensitive to the projectile energy, manifest themselves differently for negatively and positively charged projectiles. We demonstrate that the features observed are due to the interplay of different radiation mechanisms occurring in periodically bent crystals. The observations are important for design, practical realization and channeling experiments with periodically b…
This paper is devoted to the investigation of the radiation energy losses of an ultra-relativistic charged particle channeling along a crystal plane which is periodically bent by a transverse acoustic wave. In such a system there are two essential mechanisms leading to the photon emission. The first one is the ordinary channeling radiation. This radiation is generated as a result of the transverse oscillatory motion of the particle in the channel. The second one is the acoustically induced radiation. This radiation is emitted because of the periodic bending of the particle's trajectory created…
The possibility of constructing terawatt (TW) x-ray free-electron lasers (FELs) has been discussed using novel superconducting helical undulators [5]. In this paper, we consider the conditions necessary for achieving powers in excess of 1 TW in a 1.5 Å FEL using simulations with the MINERVA simulation code [7]. Steady-state simulations have been conducted using a variety of undulator and focusing configurations. In particular, strong focusing using FODO lattices is compared with the natural, weak focusing inherent in helical undulators. It is found that the most important requirement to reach …
The optical klystron enhancement to self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) free electron lasers (FELs) is studied in theory and in simulations. In contrast to a seeded FEL, the optical klystron gain in a SASE FEL is not sensitive to any phase mismatch between the radiation and the microbunched electron beam. The FEL performance with the addition of four optical klystrons located at the undulator long breaks in the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) shows significant improvement if the uncorrelated energy spread at the undulator entrance can be controlled to a very small level. In addition,…

The laser-plasma accelerator has attracted great interest for constituting an alternative in the production of the relativistic electron beams of high peak current. But the generated electron beam has poor monochrome and emittance, which make it difficult to produce high brightness radiation. Here we propose a compact flexible laser undulator based on ponderomotive force to constitute a millimeter-sized synchrotron radiation source of X-ray. We demonstrate that it can produce bright radiation with tens of keV energies. This opens a new path to compact synchrotron source with high power laser.
A periodically bent Si crystal is shown to efficiently serve for producing highly monochromatic radiation in a gamma-ray energy spectral range. A short-period small-amplitude bending yields narrow undulator-type spectral peaks in radiation from multi-GeV electrons and positrons channeling through the crystal. Benchmark theoretical results on the undulator are obtained by simulations of the channeling with a full atomistic approach to the projectile-crystal interactions over the macroscopic propagation distances. The simulations are facilitated by employing the MBN Explorer package for molecula…
In this paper we propose a new method for measurements of the longitudinal profile of 100 femtosecond electron bunches for X-ray Free Electron Lasers (XFELs). The method is simply the combination of two well-known techniques, which where not previously combined to our knowledge. We use seed 10-ps 1047 nm quantum laser to produce exact optical replica of ultrafast electron bunches. The replica is generated in apparatus which consists of an input undulator (energy modulator), and the short output undulator (radiator) separated by a dispersion section. The radiation in the output undulator is exc…
A dielectric laser accelerator, operating at optical frequencies and GHz pulse rate, is expected to produce attosec electron bunches with a moderate beam current at high energy. For relativistic electrons, the attosec bunch has a spatial length of a few nanometers, which is well suited for generating high-brightness superradiance in the VUV, EUV, and x-ray spectra. Our study shows that the brilliance of coherent undulator radiation driven by a short-bunch beam with 1~10 fC bunch charge from a dielectric laser accelerator is comparable to or higher than that of a synchrotron in the 0.1 ~ 3 keV …
We outline the fundamental coherent radiation emission processes from a bunched charged particles beam. In contrast to spontaneous emission of radiation from a random electron beam that is proportional to the number of particles, a pre-bunched electron beam can emit spontaneously coherent radiation proportional to the number of particles - squared, through the process of (spontaneous) superradiance (SP-SR) (in the sense of Dicke's). The coherent SP-SR emission of a bunched electron beam can be even further enhanced by a process of stimulated-superradiance (ST-SR) in the presence of a seed inje…
This paper is devoted to a detailed analysis of the new type of the undulator radiation generated by an ultra-relativistic charged particle channeling along a crystal plane, which is periodically bent by a transverse acoustic wave, as well as to the conditions limiting the observation of this phenomenon. This mechanism makes feasible the generation of electromagnetic radiation, both spontaneous and stimulated, emitted in a wide range of the photon energies, from X- up to gamma-rays.

A new elementary mechanism of radiation due to the oscillatory character of a radiation reaction force appearing when a relativistic charged particle moves along a periodic structure without external fields is investigated. It is shown that the non-synchronous spatial harmonics of Cherenkov-type radiation (CR) can give rise to the oscillation of a particle which consequently generates undulator-type radiation (UR). In the spectral region, where the diffraction of generated waves is essential, the radiation manifests itself in the coherent interference of CR and UR. A pure undulator -type radia…
In this paper we couple Synchrotron Radiation (SR) theory with a branch of physical optics, namely laser beam optics. We show that the theory of laser beams is successful in characterizing radiation fields associated with any SR source. Both radiation beam generated by an ultra-relativistic electron in a magnetic device and laser beam are solutions of the wave equation based on paraxial approximation. It follows that they are similar in all aspects. In the space-frequency domain SR beams appear as laser beams whose transverse extents are large compared with the wavelength. In practical situati…
Spectral intensity of spontaneous radiation is calculated in relativistic strophotron. It is shown, that it in the strophotron is given by a superposition of contributions from emission at different (odd) harmonics of the main resonance frequency . The main resonance frequency is shown to depend on the initial conditions of the electron, and in particular on its initial transversal coordinate .
Modern electron storage rings produce bright X-rays via spontaneous synchrotron emission, which is useful for a variety of scientific applications. The X-ray free-electron laser oscillator (XFELO) has the potential to amplify this output, both in terms of peak power and photon coherence. However, even current 4th generation storage rings (4GSRs) lack the requisite electron beam brightness to drive the XFELO due to its electron energy spread. The transverse gradient undulator (TGU) can overcome this issue, thus providing a practical means to couple the 4GSR to the XFELO. In this study, we first…
The problem of X-ray Free-Electron Laser operating on self-amplified spontaneous emission in irregular microundulator is considered. The case when the spectrum width of spontaneous radiation is conditioned by the spatial distribution of sources creating the undulating field is considered. In this case gain function of the stimulated radiation is dozens of times higher than that of the conventional undulators. We propose a model of irregular microundulator, which can be used to construct a drastically cheap and compact X-ray free-electron laser operating on medium energy electron bunch.
A recent "beam splitting" experiment at LCLS apparently demonstrated that after a microbunched electron beam is kicked on a large angle compared to the divergence of the FEL radiation, the microbunching wave front is readjusted along the new direction of motion of the kicked beam. Therefore, coherent radiation from an undulator placed after the kicker is emitted along the kicked direction without suppression. This strong emission of coherent undulator radiation in the kicked direction cannot be explained in the framework of conventional synchrotron radiation theory. In a previous paper we expl…
We investigate, both analytically and numerically, the influence of the dechanneling process on the parameters of undulator radiation generated by ultra-relativistic positron channelling along a crystal plane, which is periodically bent. The bending might be due either to the propagation of a transverse acoustic wave through the crystal, or due to the static strain as it occurs in superlattices. In either case the periodically bent crystal serves as an undulator which allows to generate X-ray and gamma-radiation. We propose the scheme for accurate quantitative treatment of the radiation in pre…
The use of existing linacs, and in particular light source injectors, for free-electron laser (FEL) experiments is becoming more common due to the desire to test FELs at ever shorter wavelengths. The high-brightness, high-current beams required by high-gain FELs impose technical specifications that most existing linacs were not designed to meet. Moreover, the need for specialized diagnostics, especially shot-to-shot data acquisition, demands substantial modification and upgrade of conventional linacs. Improvements have been made to the Advanced Photon Source (APS) injector linac in order to pr…
The main resonance frequency is shown to depend on the initial conditions of the electron, and in particular on its initial transversal coordinate xo. This dependence is shown to give rise to a very strong inhomogeneous broadening of the spectral lines. The broadening can become large enough for the spectral lines to overlap with each other. The spectral intensity of a spontaneous emission is averaged over xo. The averaged spectral intensity is shown to have only a very weakly expressed resonance structure.
The interaction between noncolinear laser and relativistic electron beams in static magnetic undulator has been studied within the framework of dispersion equations. For a free-electron laser without inversion (FELWI), the threshold parameters are found. The large-amplification regime should be used to bring an FELWI above the threshold laser power.
Using proper beam energy chirp and the undulator detuning effect, we propose a modified optical replica synthesizer scheme to characterize the temporal structure of a relativistic electron bunch, which predicts a 100-fs temporal resolution in numerical simulation. The proof of principle experiment demonstrates a peak current of 9 A and a slice energy spread of about 0.5 keV for the uncompressed electron beam of the Shanghai Deep UV Free Electron Laser Facility.
It is now well established that laser plasma acceleration (LPA) is an innovative and good candidate in the beam acceleration field. Relativistic beams are indeed produced up to several GeV but their quality remains to be demonstrated in the highly demanding case of Free Electron Lasers (FELs). Several experiments already showed the feasibility of synchrotron radiation delivery based on a LPA but free electron lasing has still to be achieved. Since the quality of the LPA beam inside the undulator is the critical issue, any LPA based FEL experiment requires a refined characterization of the beam…
Recent successful lasing of the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) in the hard x-ray regime and the experimental demonstration of a possibility to produce low-charge bunches with ultra-small normalized emittance have lead to the discussions on optimistic scenarios of operation of the European XFEL. In this paper we consider new options that make use of low-emittance beams, a relatively high beam energy, tunable-gap undulators, and a multi-bunch capability of this facility. We study the possibility of operation of a spontaneous radiator (combining two of them, U1 and U2, in one beamline) in the…
We present results of an experiment showing the first successful demonstration of a cascaded micro-bunching scheme. Two modulator-chicane pre-bunchers arranged in series and a high power mid-IR laser seed are used to modulate a 52 MeV electron beam into a train of sharp microbunches phase-locked to the external drive laser. This configuration allows to increase the fraction of electrons trapped in a strongly tapered inverse free electron laser (IFEL) undulator to 96\%, with up to 78\% of the particles accelerated to the final design energy yielding a significant improvement compared to the cla…
