Improving the energy-extraction efficiency of laser-plasma accelerator driven free-electron laser using transverse-gradient undulator with focusing optics and longitudinal tapering
It is reported that [Z. Huang et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 204801 (2012)], high-gain free-electron laser (FEL) can be generated by transverse-dispersed electron beams from laser-plasma accelerators (LPAs) using transverse-gradient undulator (TGU) assuming an ideal constant dispersion function without focusing optics. The constant dispersion function keeps electrons beyond the resonant energy bandwidth still being on resonant with the FEL radiation. Instead, in this paper, the case with focusing optics in an LPA-driven FEL using TGU is numerically studied, in which the dispersion function should be monotonously decreasing along the undulator. Even though the FEL resonance is not always satisfied for off-energy electrons in this case, through subtly optimizing the initial dispersion and focusing parameters, it is feasible to achieve a similar radiation power to the case assuming an ideal constant dispersion function without focusing optics, and meanwhile, to attain a good transverse coherence. Moreover, higher radiation power could be expected if longitudinally tapering, transverse-gradient variation in different sections are systematically conducted, which is demonstrated with intense global multiparameters optimizations based on GENESIS simulation.
In a free-electron laser equipped with variable-gap undulator modules, the technique of undulator tapering opens up the possibility to increase the radiation power beyond the initial saturation point, thus enhancing the efficiency of the laser. The effectiveness of the enhancement relies on the proper optimization of the taper profile. In this work, a multidimensional optimization approach is implemented empirically in the x-ray free-electron laser FLASH2. The empirical results are compared with numerical simulations.
We describe statistical and coherence properties of the radiation from x-ray free electron lasers (XFEL) operating in the post-saturation regime. We consider practical case of the SASE3 FEL at the European XFEL. We perform comparison of the main characteristics of the X-ray FEL operating in the post-saturation regime with and without undulator tapering: efficiency, coherence time and degree of transverse coherence.
We study the tapering optimization scheme for a short period, less than two cm, superconducting undulator, and show that it can generate 4 keV X-ray pulses with peak power in excess of 1 terawatt, using LCLS electron beam parameters. We study the effect of undulator module length relative to the FEL gain length for continous and step-wise taper profiles. For the optimal section length of 1.5m we study the evolution of the FEL process for two different superconducting technologies NbTi and Nb3Sn. We discuss the major factors limiting the maximum output power, particle detrapping around the satu…
We demonstrate that the output radiation characteristics of the European XFEL sources at nominal operation point can be easily made significantly better than what is currently reported in the TDRs of scientific instruments and X-ray optics. In fact, the output SASE characteristics of the baseline European XFEL have been previously optimized assuming uniform undulators at a nominal operating point of 5 kA peak current, without considering the potential of udulator tapering in the SASE regime. In order to illustrate this point, we analyze the case of an electron bunch with nominal parameters. Ba…
High conversion efficiency between electrical and optical power is highly desirable both for high peak and high average power radiation sources. In this paper, we discuss a new mechanism based on stimulated superradiant emission in a strongly tapered undulator whereby an optimal undulator tapering is calculated by dynamically matching the resonant energy variation to the ponderomotive decelerating gradient. The method has the potential to allow the extraction of a large fraction (~50%) of power from a relativistic electron beam and convert it into coherent narrow-band tunable radiation, and sh…
The problem of an efficiency increase of an FEL amplifier is now of great practical importance. Technique of undulator tapering in the post-saturation regime is used at the existing x-ray FELs LCLS and SACLA, and is planned for use at the European XFEL, Swiss FEL, and PAL XFEL. There are also discussions on the future of high peak and average power FELs for scientific and industrial applications. In this paper we perform detailed analysis of the tapering strategies for high power seeded FEL amplifiers. Application of similarity techniques allows us to derive universal law of the undulator tape…
In this paper, we present a new kind of high power and high efficiency free-electron laser oscillator based on the application of the tapering enhanced stimulated superradiant amplification (TESSA) scheme. The main characteristic of the TESSA scheme is a high intensity seed pulse which provides high gradient beam deceleration and efficient energy extraction. In the oscillator configuration, the TESSA undulator is driven by a high repetition rate electron beam and embedded in an optical cavity. A beam-splitter is used for outcoupling a fraction of the amplified power and recirculate the remaind…
We put forward a method to optimize the step-tapering amplitude of undulator strength and initial energy detuning of electron beam with the goal of maximizing the saturation power of high-gain FELs, based on the physics of longitudinal electron beam phase space. Using the FEL simulation code GENESIS, we numerically demonstrate the accuracy of the estimation for parameters corresponding to the linac coherent light source and the Tesla test facility.
The efficiency of a free-electron laser can be enhanced by sustaining the growth of the radiation power beyond the initial saturation. One notable method is undulator tapering, which involves the variation of the gap height and/or the period along the undulator. Another method is the introduction of phase jumps, using phase-shifting chicanes in the drift sections separating the undulator segments. In this article, we develop a physics model of this phase jump method, and verify it with numerical simulations. The model elucidates the energy extraction process in the longitudinal phase space. Th…
Techniques like inelastic X-ray scattering (IXS) and nuclear resonance scattering (NRS) are currently limited by the photon flux available at X-ray sources. At $14.4$ keV, third generation synchrotron radiation sources produce a maximum of $10^{10}$ photons per second in a meV bandwidth. In this work we discuss about the possibility of increasing this flux a thousand-fold by exploiting high repetition rate self-seeded pulses at the European XFEL. Here we report on a feasibility study for an optimized configuration of the SASE2 beamline at the European XFEL which combines self-seeding and undul…
We study high efficiency, multi-terawatt peak power, few angstrom wavelength, X-ray Free Electron Lasers (X-ray FELs). To obtain these characteristics we consider an optimized undulator design: superconducting, helical, with short period and built-in strong focusing. This design reduces the length of the breaks between modules, decreasing diffraction effects, and allows using a stronger transverse electron focusing. Both effects reduce the gain length and the overall undulator length. The peak power and efficiency depend on the transverse electron beam distribution and on time dependent effect…
In this paper we discuss the design choices and construction strategy of the tapered undulator system designed for a high energy extraction efficiency experiment in the ultraviolet region of the electromagnetic spectrum planned for installation at the Argonne National Laboratory Linac Extension Area (LEA) beamline. The undulator is comprised of 4 sections pure permanent magnet Halbach array separated by short break sections, each one of them housing a focusing quadrupole doublet and a phase shifter. The quadrupoles use a novel hybrid design which allows one to vary the gradient and match the b…
The Self Stimulated Undulator Klystron (SSUK) and its possible applications in the Particle Accelerator Physics, incoherent Self-Stimulated Undulator Radiation Sources (SSUR) and Free-Electron Lasers (FEL) are discussed.
We analyze the dynamics of Free Electron Laser (FEL) devices, operating with a bunched beam exhibiting a longitudinal phase space correlation. We show that the presence of an energy-position correlation term is responsible for very interesting effects like an enhancement of the peak output power, a shortening of the laser pulses and an increase of the non linearly generated harmonic intensities. We conjecture that the mechanism is due to a kind of energy tapering effect associated with the correlation. We discuss the difference of the dynamics with respect to an ordinary undulator tapering and…
All-optical ideas provide a potential to dramatically cut off the size and cost of x-ray light sources to the university-laboratory scale, with the combination of the laser-plasma accelerator and the laser undulator. However, the large longitudinal energy spread of the electron beam from laser-plasma accelerator may hinder the way to high brightness of these all-optical light sources. In this paper, the beam energy spread effect is proposed to be significantly compensated by the natural transverse gradient of a laser undulator when properly transverse-dispersing the electron beam. Theoretical …
High power ($\sim 100$ kW) industrial electron linear accelerators (linacs) are used for irradiation applications e.g., for pasteurization of food products, disinfection of medical waste, etc. We propose that high power electron beam from such an industrial linac can be first passed through an undulator to generate powerful terahertz (THz) radiation, and the spent electron beam coming out of the undulator can still be used for industrial applications. This will enhance the utilisation of a high power industrial linac. We have performed calculation of spontaneous emission in the undulator to sh…

Building on the joint expertise of the University of Hamburg and DESY the beamline was carefully designed to combine state-of-the-art expertise in laser-plasma acceleration with the latest advances in accelerator technology and beam diagnostics. LUX introduces a paradigm change moving from single-shot demonstration experiments towards available, stable and controllable accelerator operation. Here, we discuss the general design concepts of LUX and present first critical milestones that have recently been achieved, including the gener…
Free Electron Lasers (FEL) are commonly regarded as the potential key application of laser wakefield accelerators (LWFA). It has been found that electron bunches exiting from state-of-the-art LWFAs exhibit a normalized 6-dimensional beam brightness comparable to those in conventional linear accelerators. Effectively exploiting this beneficial beam property for LWFA-based FELs is challenging due to the extreme initial conditions particularly in terms of beam divergence and energy spread. Several different approaches for capturing, reshaping and matching LWFA beams to suited undulators, such as …
Laser wakefield accelerators have emerged as a promising candidate for compact synchrotron radiation and even x-ray free electron lasers. Today, to make the electrons emit electromagnetic radiation, the trajectories of laser wakefield accelerated electrons are deflected by transverse wakefield, counter-propagating laser field or external permanent magnet insertion device. Here, we propose a novel type of undulator which has a few hundred microns of period and tens of Tesla of magnetic field. The undulator consists of a bifilar capacitor-coil target which sustains strong discharge current that …
A dielectric laser accelerator, operating at optical frequencies and GHz pulse rate, is expected to produce attosec electron bunches with a moderate beam current at high energy. For relativistic electrons, the attosec bunch has a spatial length of a few nanometers, which is well suited for generating high-brightness superradiance in the VUV, EUV, and x-ray spectra. Our study shows that the brilliance of coherent undulator radiation driven by a short-bunch beam with 1~10 fC bunch charge from a dielectric laser accelerator is comparable to or higher than that of a synchrotron in the 0.1 ~ 3 keV …
Laser-plasma accelerators (LPAs), producing high-quality electron beams, provide an opportunity to reduce the size of free-electron lasers (FELs) to only a few meters. A complete system is proposed here, which is based on FEL technology and consists of an LPA, two undulators, and other magnetic devices. The system is capable to generate carrier-envelope phase stable attosecond pulses with engineered waveform. Pulses with up to~60~nJ energy and 90 to~400~attosecond duration in the 30 to 120~nm wavelength range are predicted by numerical simulation. These pulses can be used to investigate ultraf…

In order to study the dynamic response of the material and the physical mechanism of the fluid dynamics, an accelerator scenario which can be applied to hard X-ray free electron laser and high energy electron radiography was proposed. This accelerator is mainly composed of a 12GeV linac, an undulator branch and an eRad beamline. In order to characterize sample's dynamic behavior in situ and real-time with XFEL and eRad simultaneously, the linac should be capable of accelerating the two kinds of beam within the same operation mode. Combining with in-vacuum and tapering techniques, the undulator…
The Advanced Superconducting Test Accelerator (ASTA) facility is currently under construction at Fermilab. With a 1-ms macropulse composed of up to 3000 micropulses and with beam energies projected from 45 to 800 MeV, the need for non-intercepting diagnostics for beam size, position, energy, and bunch length is clear. In addition to the rf BPMs, optical synchrotron radiation (OSR), and optical diffraction radiation (ODR) techniques already planned, we propose the use of undulator radiation from a dedicated device for diagnostics. with a nominal period of 4-5 cm, a tunable field parameter K, an…
Generally, turn-to-turn fluctuations of synchrotron radiation power in a storage ring depend on the 6D phase-space distribution of the electron bunch. This effect is related to the interference of fields radiated by different electrons. Changes in the relative electron positions and velocities inside the bunch result in fluctuations in the total emitted energy per pass in a synchrotron radiation source. This effect has been previously described assuming constant and equal electron velocities before entering the synchrotron radiation source. In this paper, we present a generalized formula for t…
Accelerator-based X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) are the latest addition to the revolutionary tools of discovery for the 21st century. The two major components of an XFEL are an accelerator-produced electron beam and a magnetic undulator which tend to be kilometer-scale long and expensive. Here, we present an ultra-compact scheme to produce 10s of attosecond X-ray pulses with several GW peak power utilizing a novel aspect of the FEL instability using a highly chirped, pre-bunched and ultra-bright electron beam from a plasma-based accelerator interacting with an optical undulator. The self-…
The most promising way to increase the output power of an X-ray FEL (XFEL) is by tapering the magnetic field of the undulator. Also, significant increase in power is achievable by starting the FEL process from a monochromatic seed rather than from noise. This report proposes to make use of a cascade self-seeding scheme with wake monochromators in a tunable-gap baseline undulator at the European XFEL to create a source capable of delivering coherent radiation of unprecedented characteristics at hard X-ray wavelengths. Compared with SASE X-ray FEL parameters, the radiation from the new source ha…
X-ray free-electron laser oscillator (XFELO) is expected to be a cutting edge tool for fully coherent X-ray laser generation, and undulator taper technique is well-known for considerably increasing the efficiency of free-electron lasers (FELs). In order to combine the advantages of these two schemes, FEL amplifier seeded by XFELO is proposed by simply using a chirped electron beam. With the right choice of the beam parameters, the bunch tail is within the gain bandwidth of XFELO, and lase to saturation, which will be served as a seeding for further amplification. Meanwhile, the bunch head whic…
We study turn-by-turn fluctuations in the number of spontaneously emitted photons from an undulator, installed in the Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA) electron storage ring at Fermilab. A theoretical model is presented, showing the relative contributions due to the discrete nature of light emission and to the incoherent sum of fields from different electrons in the bunch. The model is compared with a previous experiment at Brookhaven and with new experiments we carried out at IOTA. Our experiments focused on the case of a large number of longitudinal and transverse radiation modes, a …
The spectacular development of Laser-Plasma Accelerators (LPA) appears very promising for a free electron laser application. The handling of the inherent properties of those LPA beams already allowed controlled production of LPA-based spontaneous undulator radiation. Stepping further, we here unveil that the forthcoming LPA-based seeded FELs will present singular spatio-spectral distributions. Relying on numerical simulations and simple analytical models, we show how those interferometric patterns can be exploited to retrieve, in single-shot, the spectro-temporal content and source point prope…
Free-electron lasers (FELs) have been built ranging in wavelength from long-wavelength oscillators using partial wave guiding through ultraviolet through hard x-ray that are either seeded or start from noise (SASE). In addition, FELs that produce different polarizations of the output radiation ranging from linear through elliptic to circular polarization are currently under study. In this paper, we develop a three-dimensional, time-dependent formulation that is capable of modeling this large variety of FEL configurations including different polarizations. We employ a modal expansion for the op…
In order to ensure proper SASE lasing of a fourth Generation light source, one of the goal is to produce an electron beam of small emittance and to conserve it until its used in the machine undulator. One of the non recoverable emittance increase is the collision of the electron beam during its transport with the residual gas. Based on previous work by others, we have derived a useful expression of emittance increase for electrons of any energy and cross check its validity for energies above 100 MeV with an analytical formula.
Optical stochastic cooling (OSC) is expected to enable fast cooling of dense particle beams. Transition from microwave to optical frequencies enables an achievement of stochastic cooling rates which are orders of magnitude higher than ones achievable with the classical microwave based stochastic cooling systems. A subsytem critical to the OSC scheme is the focusing optics used to image radiation from the upstream "pickup" undulator to the downstream "kicker" undulator. In this paper, we present simulation results using wave-optics calculation carried out with the {\sc Synchrotron Radiation Wor…
A surprising small dechanneling length was observed at (111) channeling of ultrarelativistic electrons in a 60 $μ$m thick silicon single crystal with a bending radius of 0.15 m. The experiments were conducted at beam energies between 3.35 and 14 GeV at the Facility for Advanced Accelerator Experimental Tests (FACET at SLAC, USA). It is shown in this paper that the small dechanneling lengths can well be reproduced with a modified Fokker-Planck equation for plane crystals in which a crystal bending has been heuristically introduced. Encouraged by this result experiments have been reconsidered wh…
The laser-plasma accelerator has attracted great interest for constituting an alternative in the production of the relativistic electron beams of high peak current. But the generated electron beam has poor monochrome and emittance, which make it difficult to produce high brightness radiation. Here we propose a compact flexible laser undulator based on ponderomotive force to constitute a millimeter-sized synchrotron radiation source of X-ray. We demonstrate that it can produce bright radiation with tens of keV energies. This opens a new path to compact synchrotron source with high power laser.
Laser Plasma Accelerators (LPA) can sustain GeV/m accelerating fields offering outstanding new possibilities for compact applications. Despite the impressive recent developments, the LPA beam quality is still significantly lower than in the conventional radio-frequency accelerators, which is an issue in the cases of demanding applications such as Free Electron Lasers (FELs). If the electron beam duration is below few tens of femtosecond keeping pC charges, the mrad level divergence and few percent energy spread are particularly limiting. Several concepts of transfer line were proposed to mitig…

We propose a use of the self-seeding scheme with single crystal monochromator to produce high power, fully-coherent pulses for applications at a dedicated bio-imaging beamline at the European X-ray FEL in the photon energy range between 3.5 keV and 5 keV. We exploit the C(111) Bragg reflection (pi-polarization) in diamond crystals with a thickness of 0.1 mm, and we show that, by tapering the 40 cells of the SASE3 type undulator the FEL power can reach up to 2 TW in the entire photon energy range. The present design assumes the use of a nominal electron bunch with charge 0.1 nC at nominal elect…
The generation of X-rays and γ-rays based on synchrotron radiation from free electrons, emitted in magnet arrays such as undulators, forms the basis of much of modern X-ray science. This approach has the drawback of requiring very high energy, up to the multi-GeV-scale, electron beams, to obtain the required photon energy. Due to the limit in accelerating gradients in conventional particle accelerators, reaching high energy typically demands use of instruments exceeding 100's of meters in length. Compact, less costly, monochromatic X-ray sources based on very high field acceleration and very s…
The electron cloud is a possible heat source in the superconducting undulator (SCU) designed for the Advanced Photon Source (APS), a 7-GeV electron synchrotron radiation source at Argonne National Laboratory. In electron cloud generation extensive research has been done, and is continuing, to understand the secondary electron component. However, little work has been done to understand the parameters of photoemission in the accelerator environment. To better understand the primary electron generation in the APS; a beamline at the Australian Light Source synchrotron was used to characterize two …
Laser-based electron acceleration is attracting strong interest from the conventional accelerator community due to its outstanding characteristics in terms of high initial energy, low emittance and high beam current. Unfortunately, such beams are currently not comparable to those of conventional accelerators, limiting their use for the manifold applications that a traditional accelerator can have. Besides working on the plasma source itself, a promising approach to shape the laser-generated beams is coupling them with conventional accelerator elements in order to benefit from both, a versatile…
We convert a GeV laser-plasma electron accelerator into a compact femtosecond-pulsed $γ$-ray source by inserting a $100 μ$m-thick glass plate $\sim3$ cm after the accelerator exit. With near-unity reliability, and requiring only crude alignment, this glass plasma mirror retro-reflected spent drive laser pulses (photon energy $\hbarω_L = 1.17$ eV) with $>50\%$ efficiency back onto trailing electrons (peak Lorentz factor $1000 < γ_e < 4400$), creating an optical undulator that generated $\sim10^8 γ$-ray photons with sub-mrad divergence, estimated peak brilliance $\sim10^{21}$ photons/s/mm$^2$/mr…
We discuss the main factors affecting the design of accelerators aiming to investigate physics at the GUT scale. The most important constraints turn out to be the energy used and the time taken to accumulate sufficient luminosity. We propose a photon collider design, where the photons are generated by undulator radiation from high energy muon beams. This reduces the energy requirements by a factor of more than $10^7$ compared to a pp collider. Much of the reduction in energy use is achieved by using a periodic magnetic field, and by splitting the muon wavefunctions spatially to reduce the phot…
We demonstrate that a long-propagating plasma bubble executing undulatory motion can be produced in the wake of two co-propagating laser pulses: a near-single-cycle injector and a multi-cycle driver. When the undulation amplitude exceeds the analytically derived threshold, highly-localized injections of plasma electrons into the bubble are followed by their long-distance acceleration. While the locations of the injection regions are controlled by the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) of the injector pulse, the mono-energetic spectrum of the accelerated sub-femtosecond high-charge electron bunches i…
Full exploitation of the physics potential of a future International Linear Collider will require the use of polarized electron and positron beams. Experiment E166 at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) has demonstrated a scheme in which an electron beam passes through a helical undulator to generate photons (whose first-harmonic spectrum extended to 7.9MeV) with circular polarization, which are then converted in a thin target to generate longitudinally polarized positrons and electrons. The experiment was carried out with a one-meter-long, 400-period, pulsed helical undulator in the…
A compact accelerator based super-radiant THz source is under development at Inter University Accelerator Centre (IUAC), New Delhi. The facility is based on the principle of pre-bunched Free Electron Laser (FEL) which will produce THz radiation in the range of ~0.18 to 3 THz from a modulated electron beam. A photocathode electron gun will generate a short train of microbunches (a "comb" beam) driven by a fiber laser system capable of producing multi micro-pulse laser beam with variable separation ( "comb" laser pulse). Upon acceleration, the electron beam will be injected in to a compact undul…
