Let $S^1$ act on a symplectic manifold in a Hamiltonian fashion with momentum map $Ψ$. Fix a value $a$ of $Ψ$. There is a question of whether the symplectic quotient at $a$ is diffeomorphic to the orbit space of some proper Lie group action. We prove under mild assumptions that this only occurs if the symplectic quotient is diffeomorphic to an effective orbifold. This, in turn, only occurs if $a$ is a regular value, or there is at most one positive weight or at most one negative weight.
We prove that when $d>2$, a $d$-dimensional symplectic quotient at the zero level of a unitary circle representation $V$ such that $V^{\Sp^1}=\{0\}$ cannot be $\Z$-graded regularly symplectomorphic to the quotient of a unitary representations of a finite group.
We compute the Hilbert series of the graded algebra of regular functions on a symplectic quotient of a unitary circle representation. Additionally, we elaborate explicit formulas for the lowest coefficients of the Laurent expansion of such a Hilbert series in terms of rational symmetric functions of the weights. Considerable efforts are devoted to including the cases where the weights are degenerate. We find that these Laurent expansions formally resemble Laurent expansions of Hilbert series of graded rings of real invariants of finite subgroups of $\U_n$. Moreover, we prove that certain Laure…
In this article we are concerned with how to compute the cohomology ring of a symplectic quotient by a circle action using the information we have about the cohomology of the original manifold and some data at the fixed point set of the action. Our method is based on the Tolman-Weitsman theorem which gives a characterization of the kernel of the Kirwan map. First we compute a generating set for the kernel of the Kirwan map for the case of product of compact connected manifolds such that the cohomology ring of each of them is generated by a degree two class. We assume the fixed point set is iso…
We study an integration theory in circle equivariant cohomology in order to prove a theorem relating the cohomology ring of a hyperkahler quotient to the cohomology ring of the quotient by a maximal abelian subgroup, analogous to a theorem of Martin for symplectic quotients. We discuss applications of this theorem to quiver varieties, and compute as an example the ordinary and equivariant cohomology rings of a hyperpolygon space.
We provided two explicit formulas for the intersection cohomology (as a graded vector space with pairing) of the symplectic quotient by a circle in terms of the $S^1$ equivariant cohomology of the original symplectic manifold and the fixed point data. The key idea is the construction of a small resolution of the symplectic quotient.
We use symplectic cobordism, and the localization result of Ginzburg, Guillemin, and Karshon, to find a wall-crossing formula for the signature of regular symplectic quotients of Hamiltonian torus actions. The formula is recursive, depending ultimately on fixed point data. In the case of a circle action, we obtain a formula for the signature of singular quotients as well. We also show how formulas for the Poincare polynomial and the Euler characteristic (equivalent to those of Kirwan) can be expressed in the same recursive manner.
Let X be a Kahler manifold that is presented as a Kahler quotient of C^n by the linear action of a compact group G. We define the hyperkahler analogue M of X as a hyperkahler quotient of the cotangent bundle T^*C^n by the induced G-action. Special instances of this construction include hypertoric varieties and quiver varieties. Our aim is to provide a unified treatment of these two previously studied examples, with specific attention to the geometry and topology of the circle action on M that descends from the scalar action on the fibers of the cotangent bundle. We provide a detailed study of …
Let $K$ be a compact Lie group of positive dimension. We show that for most unitary $K$-modules the corresponding symplectic quotient is not regularly symplectomorphic to a linear symplectic orbifold (the quotient of a unitary module of a finite group). When $K$ is connected, we show that even a symplectomorphism to a linear symplectic orbifold does not exist. Our results yield conditions that preclude the symplectic quotient of a Hamiltonian $K$-manifold from being locally isomorphic to an orbifold. As an application, we determine which unitary $\operatorname{SU}_2$-modules yield symplectic q…
We consider a natural variant of Berezin-Toeplitz quantization of compact Kähler manifolds, in the presence of a Hamiltonian circle action lifting to the quantizing line bundle. Assuming that the moment map is positive, we study the diagonal asymptotics of the associated Szegö and Toeplitz operators, and specifically their relation to the moment map and to the geometry of a certain symplectic quotient. When the underlying action is trivial and the moment map is taken to be identically equal to one, this scheme coincides with the usual Berezin-Toeplitz quantization. This continues previous work…
We identify a family of torus representations such that the corresponding singular symplectic quotients at the $0$-level of the moment map are graded regularly symplectomorphic to symplectic quotients associated to representations of the circle. For a subfamily of these torus representations, we give an explicit description of each symplectic quotient as a Poisson differential space with global chart as well as a complete classification of the graded regular diffeomorphism and symplectomorphism classes. Finally, we give explicit examples to indicate that symplectic quotients in this class may …
In their 2007 paper, Jarvis, Kaufmann, and Kimura defined the full orbifold $K$-theory of an orbifold ${\mathfrak X}$, analogous to the Chen-Ruan orbifold cohomology of ${\mathfrak X}$ in that it uses the obstruction bundle as a quantum correction to the multiplicative structure. We give an explicit algorithm for the computation of this orbifold invariant in the case when ${\mathfrak X}$ arises as an abelian symplectic quotient. Our methods are integral $K$-theoretic analogues of those used in the orbifold cohomology case by Goldin, Holm, and Knutson in 2005. We rely on the $K$-theoretic Kirwa…
Let $M$ be a proper Hamiltonian $K$-space with proper moment map $μ$. The symplectic quotient $X=μ^{-1}(0)/K$ is in general a singular stratified space. In this paper we first generalize the Kirwan map to this symplectic setting which maps the $K$ equivariant cohomology of $μ^{-1}(0)$ to the middle perversity intersection cohomology $IH^*(X)$. Next, we show that there is a natural right inverse of the Kirwan map, under an assumption coming from the cosupport axiom for the intersection homology sheaf. Furthermore, we can identify the subspace of $H^*_K(μ^{-1}(0))$ which corresponds to $IH^*(X)$…
A symplectic cut of a manifold M with a Hamiltonian circle action is a symplectic quotient of M x C. If M is Kaehler then, since C is Kaehler, the cut space is Kaehler as well. The symplectic structure on the cut is well understood. In this paper we describe the complex structure (and hence the metric) on the cut. We then generalize the construction to the case where M has a torus action and C is replaced by a toric Kaehler manifold.
In this paper, we compute contact homology of some quasi-regular contact structures, which admit Hamiltonian actions of Reeb type of Lie groups. We will discuss the toric contact case, (where the torus is of Reeb type), and the case of homogeneous contact manifolds. In both of these cases the quotients by the Reeb action are Kähler and admit perfect Morse-Bott functions via the moment map. It turns out that the contact homology depends only on the homology of the symplectic base and the bundle data of the contact manifolds as a circle bundle over the base. Moreover we can identify the relevant…
The main purpose of this paper is to summarize the basic ingredients, illustrated with examples, of a pseudoholomorphic curve theory for symplectic 4-orbifolds. These are extensions of relevant work of Gromov, McDuff and Taubes on symplectic 4-manifolds concerning pseudoholomorphic curves and Seiberg-Witten theory. They form the technical backbone of the proof that a symplectic s-cobordism of elliptic 3-manifolds (with a canonical contact structure on the boundary) is smoothly a product. One interesting feature of the theory is that existence of pseudoholomorphic curves gives certain restricti…
