Molecular crystals often exist in multiple competing polymorphs, showing significantly different physico-chemical properties. Computational crystal structure prediction is key to interpret and guide the search for the most stable or useful form: A real challenge due to the combinatorial search space, and the complex interplay of subtle effects that work together to determine the relative stability of different structures. Here we take a comprehensive approach based on different flavors of thermodynamic integration in order to estimate all contributions to the free energies of these systems with density-functional theory, including the oft-neglected anharmonic contributions and nuclear quantum effects. We take the two main stable forms of paracetamol as a paradigmatic example. We find that anharmonic contributions, different descriptions of van der Waals interactions, and nuclear quantum effects all matter to quantitatively determine the stability of different phases. Our analysis highlights the many challenges inherent in the development of a quantitative and predictive framework to model molecular crystals. However, it also indicates which of the components of the free energy can benefit from a cancellation of errors that can redeem the predictive power of approximate models, and suggests simple steps that could be taken to improve the reliability of ab initio crystal structure prediction.
The low-frequency range of vibrational spectra is sensitive to collective vibrations of the lattice. In molecular crystals, it can be decisive to identify the structure of different polymorphs, and in addition, it plays an important role on the magnitude of the temperature-dependent component of vibrational free energy differences between these crystals. In this work we study the vibrational Raman spectra and vibrational density of states of different polymorphs of the flexible Aspirin and Paracetamol crystals based on dispersion-corrected density-functional theory, density-functional perturba…
We review our recent development of a first-principles lattice dynamics method that can treat anharmonic effects nonperturbatively. The method is based on the self-consistent phonon theory and temperature-dependent phonon frequencies can be calculated efficiently by incorporating recent numerical techniques to estimate anharmonic force constants. The validity of our approach is demonstrated through applications to cubic strontium titanate, where overall good agreements with experimental data are obtained for phonon frequencies and lattice thermal conductivity. We also show the feasibility of h…
Vacancies are prevalent point defects in crystals, but their thermal responses are elusive. Herein, we formulate a simple theoretical model to shed light on the vacancy evolution during heating. Vibrational excitations are thoroughly investigated via moment recurrence techniques in quantum statistical mechanics. On that basis, we carry out numerical analyses for Ag, Cu, and Ni with the Sutton-Chen many-body potential. Our results reveal that the well-known Arrhenius law is insufficient to describe the proliferation of vacancies. Specifically, anharmonic effects lead to a strong nonlinearity in…
Anharmonic phonon-phonon scattering serves a critical role in heat conduction in solids. Previous studies have identified many selection rules for possible phonon-phonon scattering channels imposed by phonon energy and momentum conservation conditions and crystal symmetry. However, the crystal-symmetry-based selection rules have mostly been \textit{ad hoc} so far in selected materials, and a general formalism that can summarize known selection rules and lead to new ones in any given crystal is still lacking. In this work, we apply a general formalism for symmetry-based scattering selection rul…
The calculations of thermal conductivity requires to know anharmonic properties of the crystal. For this purpose a non-perturbative anharmonic theory is applied, which do not make use of the potential energy expansion over atomic displacements, but instead, runs ab initio calculations of Hellmann-Feynman forces for atomic patterns of atoms with specific displacements to rebuild the anharmonic phonon frequencies, and group velocities. see [K.Parlinski, Phys.Rev. B 98, 054305 (2018),] The Green-Kubo equation for the thermal conductivity needs to know the above quantities and the phonon relaxatio…
We combine ab initio simulations and Raman scattering measurements to demonstrate explicit anharmonic effects in the temperature dependent dielectric response of a NaCl single crystal. We measure the temperature evolution of its Raman spectrum and compare it to both a quasi-harmonic and anharmonic model. Results demonstrate the necessity of including anharmonic lattice dynamics to explain the dielectric response of NaCl, as it is manifested in Raman scattering. Our model fully captures the linear dielectric response of a crystal at finite temperatures and may therefore be used to calculate the…
We adopted and extended an efficient Grüneisen formalism to study the phonon anharmonicity and linear thermal expansion coefficients (TECs) of trigonal bismuth selenide (Bi$_2$Se$_3$) and antimony telluride (Sb$_2$Te$_3$). Anharmonicity of the systems is studied via extensive calculation of Grüneisen parameters that exploit symmetry-preserving deformations. Consistent with experimental findings, a large anisotropy between the TECs in the $a$ and $c$ directions is found. The larger anharmonicity inherent in Sb$_2$Te$_3$, as compared to Bi$_2$Se$_3$ is offset by the volumetric effect, resulting …
The efficient and accurate calculation of how ionic quantum and thermal fluctuations impact the free energy of a crystal, its atomic structure, and phonon spectrum is one of the main challenges of solid state physics, especially when strong anharmonicy invalidates any perturbative approach. To tackle this problem, we present the implementation on a modular Python code of the stochastic self-consistent harmonic approximation method. This technique rigorously describes the full thermodyamics of crystals accounting for nuclear quantum and thermal anharmonic fluctuations. The approach requires the…
We devise a framework to compute accurate phonons in molecular crystals even in case of strong quantum anharmonicity. Our approach is based on the calculation of the static limit of the phononic Matsubara Green's function from path integral molecular dynamics simulations. Our method enjoys a remarkably low variance, which allows one to compute accurate phonon frequencies after a few picoseconds of nuclear dynamics, and it is further stabilized by the use of appropriate constrained displacement operators. We applied it to solid hydrogen at high pressure. For phase III, our predicted infrared (I…
The intermolecular lattice vibrations in small-molecule organic semiconductors have a strong impact on their functional properties. Existing models treat the lattice vibrations within the harmonic approximation. In this work, we use polarization-orientation (PO) Raman measurements to monitor the temperature-evolution of the symmetry of lattice vibrations in anthracene and pentacene single crystals. Combined with first-principles calculations, we show that at 10 K the lattice dynamics of the crystals are indeed harmonic. However, as the temperature is increased specific lattice modes gradually …

Knowledge of lattice anharmonicity is essential to elucidate distinctive thermal properties in crystalline solids. Yet, accurate \textit{ab initio} investigations of lattice anharmonicity encounter difficulties owing to the cumbersome computations. Here we introduce the phonon quasiparticle approach and review its application to various materials. This method efficiently and reliably addresses lattice anharmonicity by combining \textit{ab initio} molecular dynamics and lattice dynamics calculations. Thus, in principle, it accounts for full anharmonic effects and overcomes finite-size effects t…
The phonon dispersion relations of crystal lattices can often be well-described with the harmonic approximation. However, when the potential energy landscape exhibits more anharmonicity, for instance, in case of a weakly bonded crystal or when the temperature is raised, the approximation fails to capture all crystal lattice dynamics properly. Phonon-phonon scattering mechanisms become important and limit the phonon lifetimes. We take a novel approach and simulate the phonon dispersion of a complex dynamic solid at elevated temperatures with Machine-Learning Force Fields of near-first-principle…
The self-consisted harmonic approximation (SCHA) allows the computation of free energy of anharmonic crystals considering both quantum and thermal fluctuations. Recently, a stochastic implementation of the SCHA has been developed, tailored for applications that use total energy and forces computed from first principles. In this work, we extend the applicability of the stochastic SCHA to complex crystals with many degrees of freedom, with the optimisation of both the lattice vectors and the atomic positions. To this goal, we provide an expression for the evaluation of the pressure and stress te…
First-principles calculations of phonon frequencies, lifetimes and spectral functions from weak to strong anharmonicity: the example of palladium hydrides
For Sn$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ family of uniaxial ferroelectrics, the anharmonic quantum oscillators model, based on local three-well potential for spontaneous polarization fluctuations, has been used for a description of anharmonic properties, namely thermal expansion. The calculated pseudospin fluctuations spectra in ferroelectric phase demonstrate negative Grüneisen parameters for excitations that satisfy Curie-Weiss-like temperature and pressure dependencies in the vicinity of second order phase transition. Thermal expansion coefficient is calculated by evaluation of pseudospins entropy baric depend…
We explore how anharmonicity, nuclear quantum effects (NQE), many-body dispersion interactions, and Pauli repulsion influence thermal properties of dispersion-bound molecular crystals. Accounting for anharmonicity with $ab$ $initio$ molecular dynamics yields cell parameters accurate to within 2% of experiment for a set of pyridine-like molecular crystals at finite temperatures and pressures. From the experimental thermal expansion curve, we find that pyridine-I has a Debye temperature just above its melting point, indicating sizable NQE across the entire crystalline range of stability. We find…
It is a persistent problem in condensed matter physics that glasses exhibit vibrational and thermal properties that are markedly different from those of crystals. While recent works have advanced our understanding of vibrational excitations in glasses at the harmonic approximation limit, efforts in understanding finite-temperature anharmonic processes have been limited. It is well known that phonons in crystals couple through phonon-phonon interactions, an extremely efficient mechanism for anharmonic decay that is also important in glasses. Here, however, we show that an additional anharmonic …
Understanding and predicting lattice dynamics in strongly anharmonic crystals is one of the long-standing challenges in condensed matter physics. Here we propose a first-principles method that gives accurate quasiparticle (QP) peaks of the phonon spectrum with strong anharmonic broadening. On top of the conventional first-order self-consistent phonon (SC1) dynamical matrix, the proposed method incorporates frequency renormalization effects by the bubble self-energy within the QP approximation. We apply the developed methodology to the strongly anharmonic $α$-CsPbBr$_3$ that displays phonon ins…
We present the results of classical molecular dynamics simulations to assess the relative contributions to interfacial thermal conductance from inelastic phonon processes at the interface and in the adjacent bulk materials. The simulated system is the prototypical interface between argon and "heavy argon" crystals, which enables comparison with many past computational studies. We run simulations interchanging the Lennard-Jones potential with its harmonic approximation to test the effect of anharmonicity on conductance. The results confirm that the presence of anharmonicity is correlated with i…
Measurements of thermal diffusivity in several insulators have been shown to reach a Planckian bound on thermal transport that can be thought of as the limit of validity of semiclassical phonon scattering. Beyond this regime, the heat transport must be understood in terms of incoherent motion of the atoms under strongly anharmonic interactions. In this work, we propose a model for heat transport in a strongly anharmonic system where the thermal diffusivity can be lower than the Planckian thermal diffusivity bound. Similar to the materials which exhibit thermal diffusivity close to this bound, …
We investigate the role of the quartic anharmonicity in lattice dynamics and thermal transport of type-I clathrate Ba$_{8}$Ga$_{16}$Ge$_{30}$ based on \textit{ab initio} self-consistent phonon calculations. We show that the strong quartic anharmonicity of rattling guest atoms causes the hardening of vibrational frequencies of low-lying optical modes and thereby affects calculated lattice thermal conductivities $κ_{L}$ significantly, resulting in an improved agreement with experimental results including the deviation from $κ_{L}\propto T^{-1}$ at high temperature. Moreover, our static simulatio…

A quantum Langevin model, similar to models used recently for optomechanics, was used to predict intermodulation phonon sidebands (IPS). Ab initio calculations of anharmonic phonons in rocksalt NaBr showed these spectral features as "many-body effects". Modern inelastic neutron scattering measurements on a crystal of NaBr at 300K revealed diffuse intensity at high phonon energy from a predicted upper IPS. The transverse optical (TO) part of the new features originates from phonon intermodulation between the transverse acoustic (TA) and TO phonons. The longitudinal optical (LO) spectral feature…
Despite the widespread use of silicon in modern technology, its peculiar thermal expansion is not well-understood. Adapting harmonic phonons to the specific volume at temperature, the quasiharmonic approximation, has become accepted for simulating the thermal expansion, but has given ambiguous interpretations for microscopic mechanisms. To test atomistic mechanisms, we performed inelastic neutron scattering experiments from 100-1500K on a single-crystal of silicon to measure the changes in phonon frequencies. Our state-of-the-art ab initio calculations, which fully account for phonon anharmoni…
Investigating the competition between ferroelectric ordering and quantum fluctuations is essential to tailor the desired functionalities of mixed ferroelectric and incipient ferroelectric systems, like, (Ba,Sr)TiO3 and (Eu,Ba)TiO3. Recently, it has been shown that suppression of quantum fluctuations increases ferroelectric ordering in (Eu,Ba)TiO3 and since these phenomena are coupled to crystallographic phase transitions it is essential to understand the role of phonons. Here, we observe that the unusual temperature dependence of phonons in BaTiO3 gets suppressed when Ba2+ is replaced by Eu2+.…
