Anharmonic phonon-phonon scattering serves a critical role in heat conduction in solids. Previous studies have identified many selection rules for possible phonon-phonon scattering channels imposed by phonon energy and momentum conservation conditions and crystal symmetry. However, the crystal-symmetry-based selection rules have mostly been \textit{ad hoc} so far in selected materials, and a general formalism that can summarize known selection rules and lead to new ones in any given crystal is still lacking. In this work, we apply a general formalism for symmetry-based scattering selection rules based on the group theory to anharmonic phonon-phonon scatterings, which can reproduce known selection rules and guide the discovery of new selection rules between phonon branches imposed by the crystal symmetry. We apply this formalism to analyze the phonon-phonon scattering selection rules imposed by the in-plane symmetry of graphene, and demonstrate the significant impact of symmetry-breaking strain on the lattice thermal conductivity. Our work quantifies the critical influence of the crystal symmetry on the lattice thermal conductivity in solids and suggests routes to engineer heat conduction by tuning the crystal symmetry.
We calculate the lattice dielectric function of strongly anharmonic rutile $\mathrm{TiO}_2$ from ab initio anharmonic lattice dynamics methods. Since an accurate calculation of the $Γ$ point phonons is essential for determining optical properties, we employ the modified self-consistent approach, including third-order anharmonicity as well as fourth-order anharmonicity. The resulting optical phonon frequencies and linewidths at the $Γ$ point much better agree with experimental measurements than those from a perturbative approach. We show that the four-phonon scattering process contributes as mu…
An approach to compute the anharmonic peaks of the phonon dispersion curves through the ab initio calculated Hellmann-Feynman forces from a series of supercells with realistic atomic displacements of all atoms, which correspond to a given temperature, is reported. Obtained phonon dispersion bands are able to represent the positions and shapes of the anharmonic peaks. As example, the approach to cubic PbTe and perovskite MgSiO3 crystals is applied.
Phonon energies at finite temperatures shift away from their harmonic values due to anharmonicity. In this paper, we have realized the rigorous calculation of phonon energy shifts of silicon by three and four-phonon scattering from first principles. The anharmonic fourth-order force constants are calculated by considering up to the fifth nearest neighbors. The results agree reasonably well with available data from inelastic neutron scattering throughout the Brillouin zone. Surprisingly, the frequency shifts of optical phonon modes near the $Γ$ point are sensitive to the cutoff radius of the fo…
We formulate a theory of thermal expansion based on the self-consistent phonon (SCP) theory, which nonperturbatively considers the anharmonic effect. We show that the Grünseisen formula holds within the SCP theory by replacing the phonon frequency by the SCP frequency. By comparing it with the quasiharmonic approximation (QHA), we derive explicit formulas of the correction to the QHA result. We show that the phonon anharmonicity gives a small correction of $O(\langle{\hat{U}_4\rangle}/\langle{\hat{U}_2\rangle})$ to the thermal expansion coefficient $α$, where $\hat{U}_2$ and $\hat{U}_4$ are th…
Anharmonic lattice vibrations govern the thermal dynamics in materials and present how the atoms interact and how they conduct heat. An indepth understanding of the microscopic mechanism of phonon anharmonicity in condensed systems is critical for developing better functional and energy materials. In recent years, a variety of novel behaviors in condense matters are driven by phonon anharmonic effects in some way or another, such as soft mode phase transition, negative thermal expansion, multiferroicity, ultralow thermal conductivity or high thermal resistance, and high-temperature superconduc…
We use a hybrid strategy to obtain anharmonic frequency shifts and lifetimes of phonon quasi-particles from first principles molecular dynamics simulations in modest size supercells. This approach is effective irrespective of crystal structure complexity and facilitates calculation of full anharmonic phonon dispersions, as long as phonon quasi-particles are well defined. We validate this approach to obtain anharmonic effects with calculations in MgSiO3-perovskite, the major Earth forming mineral phase. First, we reproduce irregular temperature induced frequency shifts of well characterized Ram…
The variational stochastic self-consistent harmonic approximation is combined with the calculation of third-order anharmonic coefficients within density-functional perturbation theory and the "$2n+1$" theorem to calculate anharmonic properties of crystals. It is demonstrated that in the perturbative limit the combination of these two methods yields the perturbative phonon linewidth and frequency shift in a very efficient way, avoiding the explicit calculation of fourth-order anharmonic coefficients. Moreover, it also allows calculating phonon lifetimes and inelastic neutron scattering spectra …
We present an \textit{ab initio} framework to calculate anharmonic phonon frequency and phonon lifetime that is applicable to severely anharmonic systems. We employ self-consistent phonon (SCPH) theory with microscopic anharmonic force constants, which are extracted from density-functional calculations using the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator technique. We apply the method to the high-temperature phase of SrTiO$_{3}$ and obtain well-defined phonon quasiparticles that are free from imaginary frequencies. Here we show that the anharmonic phonon frequency of the antiferrodistorti…
Knowledge of lattice anharmonicity is essential to elucidate distinctive thermal properties in crystalline solids. Yet, accurate \textit{ab initio} investigations of lattice anharmonicity encounter difficulties owing to the cumbersome computations. Here we introduce the phonon quasiparticle approach and review its application to various materials. This method efficiently and reliably addresses lattice anharmonicity by combining \textit{ab initio} molecular dynamics and lattice dynamics calculations. Thus, in principle, it accounts for full anharmonic effects and overcomes finite-size effects t…
Anharmonic decay of coherent optical phonons in semimetal Sb has been investigated by using a femtosecond pump-probe technique. The coherent $A_{1g}$ mode is observed in time domain in a wide temperature range of 7 - 290 K. The decay rate (the inverse of the dephasing time) systematically increases as the lattice temperature increases, which is well explained by anharmonic phonon-phonon coupling, causing decay of the optical phonon into two acoustic phonon modes. The frequency of the $A_{1g}$ mode decreases with the temperature, which is interpreted to the results of both thermal expansion and…
A unified approach is used to study vibrational properties of periodic systems with first-principles methods and including anharmonic effects. Our approach provides a theoretical basis for the determination of phonon-dependent quantities at finite temperatures. The low-energy portion of the Born-Oppenheimer energy surface is mapped and used to calculate the total vibrational energy including anharmonic effects, electron-phonon coupling, and the vibrational contribution to the stress tensor. We report results for the temperature dependence of the electronic band gap and the linear coefficient o…
Understanding and predicting lattice dynamics in strongly anharmonic crystals is one of the long-standing challenges in condensed matter physics. Here we propose a first-principles method that gives accurate quasiparticle (QP) peaks of the phonon spectrum with strong anharmonic broadening. On top of the conventional first-order self-consistent phonon (SC1) dynamical matrix, the proposed method incorporates frequency renormalization effects by the bubble self-energy within the QP approximation. We apply the developed methodology to the strongly anharmonic $α$-CsPbBr$_3$ that displays phonon ins…
The anharmonic phonon properties of SnSe in the Pnma phase were investigated with a combination of experiments and first-principles simulations. Using inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and nuclear resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (NRIXS), we have measured the phonon dispersions and density of states (DOS) and their temperature dependence, which revealed a strong, inhomogeneous shift and broadening of the spectrum on warming. First-principles simulations were performed to rationalize these measurements, and to explain the previously reported anisotropic thermal expansion, in particular the …
A quantum Langevin model, similar to models used recently for optomechanics, was used to predict intermodulation phonon sidebands (IPS). Ab initio calculations of anharmonic phonons in rocksalt NaBr showed these spectral features as "many-body effects". Modern inelastic neutron scattering measurements on a crystal of NaBr at 300K revealed diffuse intensity at high phonon energy from a predicted upper IPS. The transverse optical (TO) part of the new features originates from phonon intermodulation between the transverse acoustic (TA) and TO phonons. The longitudinal optical (LO) spectral feature…
The microscopic origin of the large negative thermal expansion of cubic scandium trifluorides (ScF3) is investigated by performing a set of anharmonic free-energy calculations based on density functional theory. We demonstrate that the conventional quasiharmonic approximation (QHA) completely breaks down for ScF3 and the quartic anharmonicity, treated nonperturbatively by the self-consistent phonon theory, is essential to reproduce the observed transition from negative to positive thermal expansivity and the hardening of the R4+ soft mode with heating. In addition, we show that the contributio…
All phonons in a single crystal of NaBr were measured by inelastic neutron scattering at temperatures of 10, 300 and 700 K. Even at 300 K the phonons, especially the longitudinal-optical (LO) phonons, showed large shifts in frequencies, and showed large broadenings in energy owing to anharmonicity. Ab initio computations were first performed with the quasiharmonic approximation (QHA), in which the phonon frequencies depend only on $V$, and on $T$ only insofar as it alters $V$ by thermal expansion. This QHA was an unqualified failure for predicting the temperature dependence of phonon frequenci…

We present an $\textit{ab initio}$ study of the thermodynamic properties of cubic CaSiO$_3$ perovskite (CaPv) over the pressure and temperature range of the Earth's lower mantle. We compute the anharmonic phonon dispersions throughout the Brillouin zone by utilizing the phonon quasiparticle approach, which characterizes the intrinsic temperature dependence of phonon frequencies and, in principle, captures full anharmonicity. Such temperature-dependent phonon dispersions are used to calculate $\textit{ab initio}$ free energy in the thermodynamic limit ($N \rightarrow \infty$) within the framewo…

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_2$) is a promising material for making two-dimensional crystals and flexible electronic and optoelectronic devices at the nanoscale. MoS$_2$ flakes can show high mobilities and have even been integrated in nanocircuits . A fundamental requirement for such use is efficient thermal transport. Electronic transport generates heat which needs to be evacuated, more crucially so in nanostructures. Anharmonic phonon-phonon scattering is the dominant intrinsic limitation to thermal transport in insulators. Here, using appropriate samples, ultra-low energy Raman spectroscopy a…
Harmonic calculations based on density-functional theory are generally the method of choice for the description of phonon spectra of metals and insulators. The inclusion of anharmonic effects is, however, delicate as it relies on perturbation theory requiring a considerable amount of computer time, fast increasing with the cell size. Furthermore, perturbation theory breaks down when the harmonic solution is dynamically unstable or the anharmonic correction of the phonon energies is larger than the harmonic frequencies themselves. We present a stochastic implementation of the self-consistent har…
We investigate the harmonic and anharmonic contributions to the phonon spectrum of lead telluride, and perform a complete characterization of how the anharmonic effects dominate the phonons in PbTe as temperature increases. This effect is the strongest factor in the favorable thermoelectric properties of PbTe: an optical-acoustic phonon band crossing reduces the speed of sound and the intrinsic thermal conductivity. We present the detailed temperature dependence of the dispersion relation and compare our calculated neutron scattering cross section with recent experimental measurements. We anal…
We observe anharmonic decay of the photoexcited coherent A1g phonon in bismuth to points in the Brillouin zone where conservation of momentum and energy are satisfied for three-phonon scattering. The decay of a coherent phonon can be understood as a parametric resonance process whereby the atomic displacement periodically modulates the frequency of a broad continuum of modes. This results in energy transfer through resonant squeezing of the target modes. Using ultrafast diffuse x-ray scattering, we observe build up of coherent oscillations in the target modes driven by this parametric resonanc…
We have investigated the anisotropic thermal expansion of graphite using ab-initio calculation of lattice dynamics and anharmonicity of the phonons, which reveal that the negative thermal expansion (NTE) in the a-b plane below 600 K and very large positive thermal expansion along the c-axis up to high temperatures arise due to various phonons polarized along the c-axis. While the NTE arises from the anharmonicity of transverse phonons over a broad energy range up to 60 meV, the large positive expansion along the c-axis occurs largely due to the longitudinal optic phonon modes around 16 meV and…
We here introduce a Fortran code that computes anharmonic free energy of solids from first-principles based on our phonon quasiparticle approach. In this code, phonon quasiparticle properties, i.e., renormalized phonon frequencies and lifetimes, are extracted from mode-projected velocity auto-correlation functions (VAF) of modes sampled by molecular dynamics (MD) trajectories. Using renormalized frequencies as input, the code next constructs an effective harmonic force constant matrix to calculate anharmonic phonon dispersions over the whole Brillouin zone and thus the anharmonic free energy i…
While the vibrational thermodynamics of materials with small anharmonicity at low temperatures has been understood well based on the harmonic phonons approximation; at high temperatures, this understanding must accommodate how phonons interact with other phonons or with other excitations. We shall see that the phonon-phonon interactions give rise to interesting coupling problems, and essentially modify the equilibrium and non-equilibrium properties of materials, e.g., thermal expansion, thermodynamic stability, heat capacity, optical properties, thermal transport and other nonlinear properties…
SrTiO$_3$ has been extensively investigated owing to its abundant degrees of freedom for modulation. However, the microscopic mechanism of thermal transport especially the relationship between phonon scattering and lattice distortion during the phase transition are missing and unclear. Based on deep-potential molecular dynamics and self-consistent \textit{ab initio} lattice dynamics, we explore the lattice anharmonicity-induced tetragonal-to-cubic phase transition and explain this anomalous behavior during the phase transition. Our results indicate the significant role of the renormalization o…
We report on the temperature dependence of the anharmonic decay rate of zone-center (G mode) optical phonons in both single-walled carbon nanotubes and graphite. The measurements are performed using a pump-probe Raman scattering scheme with femtosecond laser pulses. For nanotubes, measured over a temperature range of 6 K-700 K, we observe little temperature dependence of the decay rate below room temperature. Above 300 K, the decay rate increases from 0.8 to 1.7 ps-1. The decay rates observed for graphite range from 0.5 to 0.8 ps-1 for temperatures from 300 K-700 K. We compare the behavior obs…
Understanding the microscopic processes affecting the bulk thermal conductivity is crucial to develop more efficient thermoelectric materials. PbTe is currently one of the leading thermoelectric materials, largely thanks to its low thermal conductivity. However, the origin of this low thermal conductivity in a simple rocksalt structure has so far been elusive. Using a combination of inelastic neutron scattering measurements and first-principles computations of the phonons, we identify a strong anharmonic coupling between the ferroelectric transverse optic (TO) mode and the longitudinal acousti…
Recently there has been paid much attention to phenomena caused by local anharmonic vibrations of the guest ions encapsulated in polyhedral cages of materials such as pyrochlore oxides, filled skutterdites and clathrates. We theoretically investigate the optical conductivity solely due to these so-called rattling phonons in a one-dimensional anharmonic potential model. The dipole interaction of the guest ions with electric fields induces excitations expressed as transitions among vibrational states with non-equally spaced energies, resulting in a natural line broadening and a shift of the peak…
The renormalization of the band structure at zero temperature due to electron-phonon coupling is investigated in diamond, BN, LiF and MgO crystals. We implement a dynamical scheme to compute the frequency-dependent self-energy and the resulting quasiparticle electronic structure. Our calculations reveal the presence of a satellite band below the Fermi level of LiF and MgO. We show that the renormalization factor (Z), which is neglected in the adiabatic approximation, can reduce the zero-point renormalization (ZPR) by as much as 40%. Anharmonic effects in the renormalized eigenvalues at finite …
Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are layered materials which show excellent potential for nanoelectronic and optoelectronic applications. However, as many of the exciting features of these materials are controlled by the anharmonic effects, a proper understanding of the phonon properties and anharmonicity associated with these materials is essential for the proposed applications to be realized. We present here a comprehensive study on the phonon properties of two different TMDs; viz., MoS2 and MoTe2, as a function of temperature, laser excitations, and polarization, as well as flake-thi…
Time-resolved Raman spectroscopy has been applied to probe the anharmonic coupling and electron-phonon interaction of optical phonons in graphite. From the decay of the transient anti-Stokes scattering of the G-mode following ultrafast excitation, we measured a lifetime of 2.2+/-0.1ps for zone-center optical phonons. We also observed a transient stiffening of G-mode phonons, an effect attributed to the reduction of the electron-phonon coupling for high electronic temperatures.
In a polar solid, electrons or other charge carriers can interact with the phonons of the ionic lattice, leading to the formation of polaron quasiparticles. The optical conductivity and optical absorption spectrum of a material are affected by this electron-phonon coupling, most notably leading to an absorption peak in the mid-infrared region. Recently, a model Hamiltonian for anharmonic electron-phonon coupling was derived [M. Houtput and J. Tempere, Phys. Rev. B \textbf{103}, 184306 (2021)], that includes both the conventional Fröhlich interaction as well an interaction where an electron int…
The anharmonicity of phonons in solid is ultimately rooted in the chemical bonding. However, the direct connection between phonon anharmoncity and chemical bonding is difficult to make experimentally or theoretically, due mainly to their complicated lattice structures. Here, with the help of density functional theory based calculations, we discovery that electrostatic inter-layer coupling in Bi$_2$O$_2$X (X=S,Se,Te) leads to intrinsically low lattice thermal conductivity. We explain our discovery by the strong anharmonic chemical bonding between Bi and chalcogen atoms. Our results shed light o…
Interfacial thermal transport is critical for many thermal-related applications such as heat dissipation in electronics. While the total interfacial thermal conductance (ITC) can be easily measured or calculated, the ITC spectral mapping has been investigated only recently and is not fully understood. By combining nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations and atomistic Green's function method, we systematically investigate the ITC spectrum across an ideal interface, i.e., the argon-heavy argon interface. Our results show that the ITC spectrum increases gradually with temperature as more ph…
We formulate a first-principle scheme for structural optimization at finite temperature ($T$) based on the self-consistent phonon (SCP) theory, which accurately takes into account the effect of strong phonon anharmonicity. The $T$-dependence of the shape of the unit cell and internal atomic configuration is determined by minimizing the variational free energy in the SCP theory. At each optimization step, the interatomic force constants in the new structure are calculated without running additional electronic structure calculations, which makes the method dramatically efficient. We demonstrate …

Anharmonic effects in an atomic monolayer thin crystal with honeycomb lattice structure are investigated by analytical and numerical lattice dynamical methods. Starting from a semi-empirical model for anharmonic couplings of third and fourth order, we study the in-plane and out-of-plane (flexural) mode components of the generalized wave vector dependent Grüneisen parameters, the thermal tension and the thermal expansion coefficients as function of temperature and crystal size. From the resonances of the displacement-displacement correlation functions we obtain the renormalization and decay rat…
The investigation of thermal properties of recently emerged two-dimensional (2D) materials is a necessary step towards fulfilling their potential applications in nano-electronics devices. In this study, the thermal conductivity of novel \b{eta}-NX (X=P, As, Sb) monolayers are investigated using a first-principles density functional theory (DFT) study based on the full solution of the linearized Peierls-Boltzmann transport equation (PBTE). The results show that the room temperature thermal conductivities of \b{eta}-NP, \b{eta}-NAs, and \b{eta}-NSb are about 1.1, 5.5, and 34.0 times higher than …
We review our recent development of a first-principles lattice dynamics method that can treat anharmonic effects nonperturbatively. The method is based on the self-consistent phonon theory and temperature-dependent phonon frequencies can be calculated efficiently by incorporating recent numerical techniques to estimate anharmonic force constants. The validity of our approach is demonstrated through applications to cubic strontium titanate, where overall good agreements with experimental data are obtained for phonon frequencies and lattice thermal conductivity. We also show the feasibility of h…
Two-dimensional (2D) ZrS2 monolayer (ML) has emerged as a promising candidate for thermoelectric (TE) device applications due to its high TE figure of merit, which is mainly contributed by its inherently low lattice thermal conductivity. This work investigates the effect of the lattice anharmonicity driven by temperature-dependent phonon dispersions on thermal transport of ZrS2 ML. The calculations are based on the self-consistent phonon (SCP) theory to calculate the thermodynamic parameters along with the lattice thermal conductivity. The higher- order (quartic) force constants were extracted…
At room temperature, PbTe and SnTe are efficient thermoelectrics with a cubic structure. At low temperature, SnTe undergoes a ferroelectric transition with a critical temperature strongly dependent on the hole concentration, while PbTe is an incipient ferroelectric. By using the stochastic self-consistent harmonic approximation, we investigate the anharmonic phonon spectra and the occurrence of a ferroelectric transition in both systems. We find that vibrational spectra strongly depends on the approximation used for the exchange-correlation kernel in density functional theory. If gradient corr…
Understanding collective phenomena in quantum materials from first principles is a promising route toward engineering materials properties on demand and designing new functionalities. This work examines the quantum paraelectric state, an elusive state of matter characterized by the smooth saturation of the ferroelectric instability at low temperature due to quantum fluctuations associated with anharmonic phonon effects. The temperature-dependent evolution of the soft ferroelectric phonon mode in the quantum paraelectric KTaO$_3$ in the range 0-300 K is modelled by combining density functional …
