The problem of formulating a manifest covariant Hamiltonian theory of General Relativity in the presence of source fields is addressed, by extending the so-called "DeDonder-Weyl" formalism to the treatment of classical fields in curved space-time. The theory is based on a synchronous variational principle for the Einstein equation, formulated in terms of superabundant variables. The technique permits one to determine the continuum covariant Hamiltonian structure associated with the Einstein equation. The corresponding continuum Poisson bracket representation is also determined. The theory relies on first-principles, in the sense that the conclusions are reached in the framework of a non-perturbative covariant approach, which allows one to preserve both the 4-scalar nature of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian densities as well as the gauge invariance property of the theory.
Creating a modified Belinfante/Rosenfeld procedure, Mathisson-Papapetrou-like equations are derived by which a comparison of General-Covariant Continuum Physics with General Relativity Theory becomes possible.
The covariant Hamilton-Jacobi equation for the Teleparallel Equivalent of General Relativity is derived based on the analysis of the second-class constraints within the covariant Hamiltonian theory of De Donder-Weyl according to the constraints algorithm developed by Kanatchikov.
A covariant formula for conserved currents of energy, momentum and angular-momentum is derived from a general form of Noethers theorem applied directly to the Einstein-Hilbert action of classical general relativity. Energy conservation in a closed big-bang cosmology is discussed as a special case. Special care is taken to distinguish between kinematic and dynamic expressions.
A general covariant extension of Einstein\'{}s field equations is considered with a view to Numerical Relativity applications. The basic variables are taken to be the metric tensor and an additional four-vector $Z_μ$. Einstein's solutions are recovered when the additional four-vector vanishes, so that the energy and momentum constraints amount to the covariant algebraic condition $Z_μ=0$. The extended field equations can be supplemented by suitable coordinate conditions in order to provide symmetric hyperbolic evolution systems: this is actually the case for either harmonic coordinates or norm…
I illustrate a simple hamiltonian formulation of general relativity, derived from the work of Esposito, Gionti and Stornaiolo, which is manifestly 4d generally covariant and is defined over a finite dimensional space. The spacetime coordinates drop out of the formalism, reflecting the fact that they are not related to observability. The formulation can be interpreted in terms of Toller's reference system transformations, and provides a physical interpretation for the spinnetwork to spinnetwork transition amplitudes computable in principle in loop quantum gravity and in the spin foam models.
A general covariant extension of Einstein's field equations is considered with a view to Numerical Relativity applications. The basic variables are taken to be the metric tensor and an additional four-vector. The extended field equations, when supplemented by suitable coordinate conditions, determine the time evolution of all these variables without any constraint. Einstein's solutions are recovered when the additional four-vector vanishes, so that the energy and momentum constraints hold true. The extended system is well posed when using the natural extension of either harmonic coordinates or…
The ADM formalism is reviewed and techniques for decomposing generic components of metric, connection and curvature are obtained. These techniques will turn out to be enough to decompose not only Einstein equations but also covariant conservation laws. Then a number of independent sets of hypotheses that are sufficient (though non-necessary) to obtain standard ADM quantities (and Hamiltonian) from covariant conservation laws are considered. This determines explicitely the range in which standard techniques are equivalent to covariant conserved quantities. The Schwarzschild metric in different …
The elliptic system of equations, which is general-covariant and locally SU(2)-covariant, is investigated. The new condition of the Dirichlet problem solvability and the condition of zeros absence for solutions are obtained for this system, which contains in particular case the Sen-Witten equation. On this basis it is proved the existence of the wide class of hypersurfaces, in all points of which there exists a correspondence between the Sen-Witten spinor field and three-frame, which generalizes the Nester orthoframe. The Nester special orthoframe also exists on a certain subclass containing n…
Diffeomorphism-induced symmetry transformations and time evolution are distinct operations in generally covariant theories formulated in phase space. Time is not frozen. Diffeomorphism invariants are consequently not necessarily constants of the motion. Time-dependent invariants arise through the choice of an intrinsic time, or equivalently through the imposition of time-dependent gauge fixation conditions. One example of such a time-dependent gauge fixing is the Komar-Bergmann use of Weyl curvature scalars in general relativity. An analogous gauge fixing is also imposed for the relativistic f…
Hamiltonian gravity, relying on arbitrary choices of "space," can obscure spacetime symmetries. We present an alternative, manifestly spacetime covariant formulation that nonetheless distinguishes between "spatial" and "temporal" variables. The key is viewing dynamical fields from the perspective of a field of observers -- a unit timelike vector field that also transforms under local Lorentz transformations. On one hand, all fields are spacetime fields, covariant under spacetime symmeties. On the other, when the observer field is normal to a spatial foliation, the fields automatically fall int…
We give a fully covariant energy momentum stress tensor for the gravitational field which is easily physically motivated, and which leads to a very general derivation of the Einstein equation for gravity. We do not need to assume any property of the surce matter fields' energy momentum stress tensor other than symmetry. We give a physical motivation for this choice using laser light pressure. As a consequence of our derivation, the energy momentum stress tensor for the total source matter and fields must be divergence free, when spacetime is 4 dimensional. Moreoverr, if the total source matter…
We carry out the canonical analysis of a covariant version of unimodular gravity in terms of the connection representation. We then proceed to quantize this theory by implementing the Dirac procedure. We confirm whether and how the Kodama state, which is a solution of quantum general relativity, can be extended into covariant unimodular gravity. Finally, we discuss the difference of quantum states between covariant unimodular gravity, the original unimodular gravity, and general relativity.
A trajectory-based representation for the quantum theory of the gravitational field is formulated. This is achieved in terms of a covariant Generalized Lagrangian-Path (GLP) approach which relies on a suitable statistical representation of Bohmian Lagrangian trajectories, referred to here as GLP-representation. The result is established in the framework of the manifestly-covariant quantum gravity theory (CQG-theory) proposed recently and the related CQG-wave equation advancing in proper-time the quantum state associated with massive gravitons. Generally non-stationary analytical solutions for …
Phase transitions with spontaneous symmetry breaking and vector order parameter are considered in multidimensional theory of general relativity. Covariant equations, describing the gravitational properties of topological defects, are derived. The topological defects are classified in accordance with the symmetry of the covariant derivative of the vector order parameter. The abilities of the derived equations are demonstrated in application to the brane world concept. New solutions of the Einstein equations with a transverse vector order parameter are presented. In the vicinity of phase transit…
We explain the necessity of application of semi-metric in general relativity. A detailed discussion on the energy-momentum conservation in the general relativity is presented using the mathematical tool of semi-metric. By means of the general covariant spacetime translation transformation, the most general covariant conservation law of energy-momentum is obtained, which is valid for any coordinates and overcomes the flaws of the expressions of Einstain, Landau and Moller.
Traditional derivations of general relativity from the graviton degrees of freedom assume space-time Lorentz covariance as an axiom. In this essay, we survey recent evidence that general relativity is the unique spatially-covariant effective field theory of the transverse, traceless graviton degrees of freedom. The Lorentz covariance of general relativity, having not been assumed in our analysis, is thus plausibly interpreted as an accidental or emergent symmetry of the gravitational sector. From this point of view, Lorentz covariance is a necessary feature of low-energy graviton dynamics, not…
We apply the 1+1+2 covariant approach to describe a general static and spherically symmetric relativistic stellar object which contains two interacting fluids. We then use the 1+1+2 equations to derive the corresponding Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equations in covariant form in the isotropic, non-interacting case. These equations are used to obtain new exact solutions by means of direct resolution and reconstruction techniques. Finally, we show that the generating theorem known for the single fluid case can also be used to obtain two-fluid solutions from single fluid ones.
We derive a coordinate-independent formulation of the post-1-Newtonian approximation to general relativity. This formulation is a generalization of the Newton-Cartan geometric formulation of Newtonian gravity. It involves several fields and a connection, but no spacetime metric at the fundamental level. We show that the usual coordinate-dependent equations of post-Newtonian gravity are recovered when one specializes to asymptotically flat spacetimes and to appropriate classes of coordinates.
In continuum physics is presupposed that general-relativistic balance equations are valid which are created from the Lorentz-covariant ones by application of the equivalence principle. Consequently, the question arises, how to make these general-covariant balances compatible with Einstein's field equations. The compatibility conditions are derived by performing a modified Belinfante-Rosenfeld symmetrization for the non-symmetric and not divergence-free general-relativistic energy-momentum tensor. The procedure results in the Mathisson-Papapetrou equations.
The Weyssenhoff fluid is a perfect fluid with spin where the spin of the matter fields is the source of torsion in an Einstein-Cartan framework. Obukhov and Korotky showed that this fluid can be described as an effective fluid with spin in general relativity. A dynamical analysis of such a fluid is performed in a gauge invariant manner using the 1+3 covariant approach. This yields the propagation and constraint equations for the set of dynamical variables. A verification of these equations is performed for the special case of irrotational flow with zero peculiar acceleration by evolving the co…
This thesis is a review of backreaction, which is a possible alternative to dark energy and modified gravity. We describe in detail the 3+1 covariant formalism and Frobenius' theorem. We present the averaging procedure developed by Buchert, the Buchert equations and the generalization of these equations to the case of general matter. We then generalize to arbitrary number of spatial dimensions. We focus on the case of 2+1 dimensions, where the relation between the topology and the geometry of a surface imposes a global constraint on backreaction.
We propose a covariant entropy bound in gravitational theories beyond general relativity (GR), using Wald-Jacobson-Myers entropy instead of Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. We first extend the proof of the bound known in 4-dimensional GR to D-dimensional GR, f(R) gravity and canonical scalar-tensor theory. We then consider Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) gravity as a more non-trivial example and, under a set of reasonable assumptions, prove the bound in the GR branch of spherically symmetric configurations. As a corollary, it is shown that under the null and dominant energy conditions, the generalized …
We present Hamilton's equations for the teleparallel equivalent of general relativity (TEGR), which is a reformulation of general relativity based on a curvatureless, metric compatible, and torsionful connection. For this, we consider the Hamiltonian for TEGR obtained through the vector, antisymmetric, symmetric and trace-free, and trace irreducible decomposition of the phase space variables. We present the Hamiltonian for TEGR in the covariant formalism for the first time in the literature, by considering a spin connection depending on Lorentz matrices. We introduce the mathematical formalism…
We construct a generally-covariant formulation of non-equilibrium thermodynamics in General Relativity. We find covariant entropic forces arising from gradients of the entropy density, and a corresponding non-conservation of the energy momentum tensor in terms of these forces. We also provide a Hamiltonian formulation of General Relativity in the context of non-equilibrium phenomena and write the Raychaudhuri equations for a congruence of geodesics. We find that a fluid satisfying the strong energy condition could avoid collapse for a positive and sufficiently large entropic-force contribution…
We discuss in this Chapter a series of theoretical developments which motivate the introduction of a quantum evolution equation for which the eikonal approximation results in the geodesics of a four dimensional manifold. This geodesic motion can be put into correspondence with general relativity. One obtains in this way a quantum theory on a flat spacetime, obeying the rules of the standard quantum theory in Lorentz covariant form, with a spacetime dependent Lorentz tensor $g_{μν}$, somewhat analogous to a gauge field, coupling to the kinetic terms. Since the geodesics predicted by the eikonal…
Einstein's relativity theory demands that all meaningful physical objects should be defined covariantly, i.e. in a coordinate independent way. Concepts of relative velocity, acceleration, gravity acceleration and gravity potential are fundamental in Newton's theory and they are imprinted in everyone's physical intuition. Unfortunately, relativistic definitions of them are not commonly known or appreciated. Every now and then some confused authors use wrong, non-covariant, definitions of velocity, acceleration and gravity, based on their vague Newtonian intuitions and hidden in a superficial, o…
An action principle of singular hypersurfaces in general relativity and scalar-tensor type theories of gravity in the Einstein frame is presented without assuming any symmetry. The action principle is manifestly doubly covariant in the sense that coordinate systems on and off a hypersurface are disentangled and can be independently specified. It is shown that, including variation of the metric, the position of the hypersurface and matter fields, the variational principle gives the correct set of equations of motion: the Einstein equation off the hypersurface, Israel's junction condition in a d…
We apply the 1+1+2 covariant semi-tetrad approach to describe a general static and spherically symmetric relativistic stellar object which contains two fluids with anisotropic pressure. The corresponding Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations are then obtained in covariant form for the anisotropic case. These equations are used to obtain new exact solutions using direct resolution and reconstruction techniques. Finally, we show that three of the generating theorems known for the single fluid case can also be used to obtain two-fluid solutions from single fluid ones.
In this we briefly cover the covariant approach to describe inertial forces in general relativity and in particular look at the behaviour of the cumulative drag index for stationary Kerr geometry.
We present a manifestly Lorentz-covariant description of the phase space of general relativity with the Immirzi parameter. This formulation emerges after solving the second-class constraints arising in the canonical analysis of the Holst action. We show that the new canonical variables give rise to other Lorentz-covariant parametrizations of the phase space via canonical transformations. The resulting form of the first-class constraints in terms of new variables is given. In the time gauge, these variables and the constraints become those found by Barbero.
All the Doubly Special Relativity (DSR) models studied in literature so far involve a deformation of the energy conservation rule that forces us to release the hypothesis of the additivity of the energy for composite systems. In view of the importance of the issue for a consistent formulation of a DSR statistical mechanics and a DSR thermodynamics, we show that DSR models preserving the usual (i.e. additive) energy conservation rule can be found. These models allow the construction of a DSR-covariant extensive energy. The implications of the analysis for the dynamics of DSR-covariant multipart…
The Lagrangian formulation of classical field theories and in particular general relativity leads to a coordinate-free, fully covariant analysis of these constrained systems. This paper applies multisymplectic techniques to obtain the analysis of Palatini and self-dual gravity theories as constrained systems, which have been studied so far in the Hamiltonian formalism. The constraint equations are derived while paying attention to boundary terms, and the Hamiltonian constraint turns out to be linear in the multimomenta. The equivalence with Ashtekar's formalism is also established. The whole c…
Numerical integration of the field equations in bimetric relativity is necessary to obtain solutions describing realistic systems. Thus, it is crucial to recast the equations as a well-posed problem. In general relativity, under certain assumptions, the covariant BSSN formulation is a strongly hyperbolic formulation of the Einstein equations, hence its Cauchy problem is well-posed. In this paper, we establish the covariant BSSN formulation of the bimetric field equations. It shares many features with the corresponding formulation in general relativity, but there are a few fundamental differenc…
A new definition of coarse-grained quantities describing the dust flow in General Relativity is proposed. It assigns the coarse--grained expansion, shear and vorticity to finite-size comoving domains of fluid in a covariant, coordinate-independent manner. The coarse--grained quantities are all quasi-local functionals, depending only on the geometry of the boundary of the considered domain. They can be thought of as relativistic generalizations of simple volume averages of local quantities in a flat space. The procedure is based on the isometric embedding theorem for S^2 surfaces and thus requi…
The Bargmann-Wigner (BW) scalar product is a particular case of a larger class of scalar products parametrized by a family of world-vectors. The choice of null and $p$-dependent world-vectors leads to BW amplitudes which behave as local $SU(2)$ spinors (BW-spinors) if {\it passive\/} transformations are concerned. The choice of null directions leads to a simplified formalism which allows for an application of ordinary, manifestly covariant spinor techniques in the context of infinite dimensional unitary representations of the Poincaré group.
We present a new finite action for Einstein gravity in which the Lagrangian is quadratic in the covariant derivative of a spinor field. Via a new spinor-curvature identity, it is related to the standard Einstein-Hilbert Lagrangian by a total differential term. The corresponding Hamiltonian, like the one associated with the Witten positive energy proof is fully four-covariant. It defines quasi-local energy-momentum and can be reduced to the one in our recent positive energy proof. (Fourth Prize, 1994 Gravity Research Foundation Essay.)
In de Sitter (dS) special relativity (SR), two kinds of conserved currents are derived. The first kind is a 5-dimensional (5d) dS-covariant angular momentum (AM) current, which unites the energy-momentum (EM) and 4d AM current in an inertial-type coordinate system. The second kind is a dS-invariant AM current, which can be generalized to a conserved current for the coupling system of the matter field and gravitational field in dS gravity. Moreover, an inherent EM tensor is predicted, which comes from the spin part of the dS-covariant current. All the above results are compared to the ordinary …
A Hamiltonian approach to the equations of general relativity is proposed using the powerful mathematical language of multivector-valued differential forms. In the approach, the gravitational coordinates are the 12 spatial components of the line interval (the vierbein) including their antisymmetric parts, and their 12 conjugate momenta. A feature of the proposed formalism is that it allows Lorentz gauge freedoms to be imposed on the Lorentz connections rather than on the vierbein, which may facilitate numerical integration in some challenging problems. The 40 Hamilton's equations comprise 12 +…
In Symmetric Teleparallel General Relativity, gravity is attributed to the non-metricity. The so-called "coincident gauge" is usually taken in this theory so that the affine connection vanishes and the metric is the only fundamental variable. This gauge choice was kept in many studies on the extensions of Symmetric Teleparallel General Relativity, such as the so-called f(Q) theory. In this paper, we point out that sometimes this will make the f(Q) theory inconsistent. To circumvent this problem, we reformulate the f(Q) theory in a covariant way with which we can find suitable non-vanishing aff…
A manifestly covariant equation is derived to describe the perturbations in a domain wall on a given background spacetime. This generalizes recent work on domain walls in Minkowski space and introduces a framework for examining the stability of relativistic bubbles in curved spacetimes.
General Relativity with nonvanishing torsion has been investigated in the first order formalism of Poincare gauge field theory. In the presence of torsion, either side of the Einstein equation has the nonvanishing covariant divergence. This fact turned out to be self-consistent in the framework under consideration. By using Noether's procedure with the definition of the Lie derivative where the general coordinate transformation and the local Lorentz rotation are combined, the revised covariant divergence of the energy momentum is consistently obtained. Subsequently we have definitely derived t…
The theory of gravitation in the spacetime with Finsler structure is constructed. It is shown that the theory keeps general covariance. Such theory reduces to Einstein's general relativity when the Finsler structure is Riemannian. Therefore, this covariant theory of gravitation is an elegant realization of Einstein's thoughts on gravitation in the spacetime with Finsler structure.
Manifestly covariant formalism for Bargmann-Wigner fields is developed. It is shown that there exists some freedom in the choice of the form of the Bargmann-Wigner scalar product: The general product depends implicitly on a family of world-vectors. The standard choice of the product corresponds to timelike and equal vectors which define a ``time" direction. The generalized form shows that formulas are simpler if one chooses {\it null\/} directions. This freedom is used to derive simple covariant formulas for momentum-space wave functions (generalized Wigner states) corresponding to arbitrary m…
Canonical Hamiltonian field theory in curved spacetime is formulated in a manifestly covariant way. Second quantization is achieved invoking a correspondence principle between the Poisson bracket of classical fields and the commutator of the corresponding quantum operators. The Dirac theory is investigated and it is shown that, in contrast to the case of bosonic fields, in curved spacetime, the field momentum does not coincide with the generators of spacetime translations. The reason is traced back to the presence of second class constraints occurring in Dirac theory. Further, it is shown that…
In this paper I give overviews of the polysymplectic approach to covariant Hamiltonian field theory and the simplest geometric quantization of classical particle theories. I then give a synopsis of a recently proposed toy model for applying this geometric quantization map to polysymplectic field theory. I show that no special difficulties arise when this toy model is applied to general relativity. I then sketch the reasons why the standard tools of covariant Hamiltonian field theory are not up to the challenge of GR, so that the resulting quantum theory cannot be taken seriously. A few remarks…
A suite of three evolution systems is presented in the framework of the 3+1 formalism. The first one is of second order in space derivatives and has the same causal structure of the Baumgarte-Shapiro-Shibata-Nakamura (BSSN) system for a suitable choice of parameters. The second one is the standard first order version of the first one and has the same causal structure of the Bona-Masso system for a given parameter choice. The third one is obtained from the second one by reducing the space of variables in such a way that the only modes that propagate with zero characteristic speed are the trivia…
Taking clues from the recent construction of the covariant action for type II and heterotic string field theories, we construct a manifestly Lorentz covariant action for type IIB supergravity, and discuss its gauge fixing maintaining manifest Lorentz invariance. The action contains a (non-gravitating) free 4-form field besides the usual fields of type IIB supergravity. This free field, being completely decoupled from the interacting sector, has no physical consequence.
We introduce a naturally-defined totally invariant spacetime energy expression for general relativity incorporating the contribution from gravity. The extension links seamlessly to the action integral for the gravitational field. The demand that the general expression for arbitrary systems reduces to the Tolman integral in the case of stationary bounded distributions, leads to the matter-localized Ricci integral for energy-momentum in support of the energy localization hypothesis. The role of the observer is addressed and as an extension of the special relativistic case, the field of observers…
We investigate the covariant Hamiltonian symplectic structure of General Relativity for spatially bounded regions of spacetime with a fixed time-flow vector. For existence of a well-defined Hamiltonian variational principle taking into account a spatial boundary, it is necessary to modify the standard Arnowitt-Deser-Misner Hamiltonian by adding a boundary term whose form depends on the spatial boundary conditions for the gravitational field. The most general mathematically allowed boundary conditions and corresponding boundary terms are shown to be determined by solving a certain equation obta…
One of the main features of covariant theories, in particular general relativity, is that the field equation possesses gauge freedom associated with global diffeomorphisms of the underlying manifold. I shall explain here how the hole argument is a reflection of this gauge freedom. Finally I shall point out some implications of the hole argument and extend the hole argument to the case of permutable theories. As covariant theories provides a general mathematical framework for classical physics, permutable theories provide the language for quantum physics. Permutable theories are defined functor…
The present paper continues the work of the authors [arXiv:1306.6887 [gr-qc]]. Here, we study generally covariant metric-torsion theories of gravity presented more concretely, setting that their Lagrangians are \emph{manifestly} generally covariant scalars. It is assumed that Lagrangians depend on metric tensor, curvature tensor, torsion tensor and its first and second covariant derivatives, besides, on an arbitrary set of other tensor (matter) fields and their first and second covariant derivatives. Thus, both the standard minimal coupling with the Riemann-Cartan geometry and non-minimal coup…
