We study the solvability of a general class of cross diffusion systems and establish the local and global existence of their strong solutions under the weakest assumption that they are VMO. This work simplifies the setting in our previous work [16] and provides new extensions which are more verifiable in applications.
We consider some cross diffusion systems which is inspired by models in mathematical biology/ecology, in particular the Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto (SKT) model in population biology. We establish the global existence of strong solutions to systems for multiple species having equal either diffusion or reaction rates. The systems are given on bounded domains of arbitrary dimension.
We prove existence and uniqueness of travelling waves for a reaction-diffusion system coupling a classical reaction-diffusion equation in a strip with a diffusion equation on a line. To do this we use a continuation method which leads to further insight into the system. In particular, the transition occurs through a singular perturbation which seems new in this context, connecting the system with a Wentzell type boundary value problem.
Global existence of strong solutions and the existence of global and atrractors are established for generalized Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto models on planar domains. The cross diffusion and reaction can have polynomial growth of any order.
In this paper, we mainly introduce a general method to study the existence and uniqueness of solution of free boundary problems with partially degenerate diffusion.
The aim of this paper is to construct invariant regions of a generalized m-component reaction-diffusion system with a tri-diagonal Toeplitz matrix of diffusion coefficients and prove the global existence of solutions using Lyapunov functional. The paper assumes nonhomogeneous boundary conditions and polynomial growth for the non-linear reaction term.
We prove a global existence, uniqueness and regularity result for a two-species reaction-diffusion volume-surface system that includes nonlinear bulk diffusion and nonlinear (weak) cross diffusion on the active surface. A key feature is a proof of upper $L^{\infty}$-bounds that exploits the entropic gradient structure of the system.
This paper is concerned with the local and global existence of solutions for a generalized $m$-component reaction--diffusion system with a tridiagonal $2$--Toeplitz diffusion matrix and polynomial growth. We derive the eigenvalues and eigenvectors and determine the parabolicity conditions in order to diagonalize the proposed system. We, then, determine the invariant regions and utilize a Lyapunov functional to establish the global existence of solutions for the proposed system. A numerical example is used to illustrate and confirm the findings of the study.
The global existence of classical solutions to cross diffusion systems of more than 2 equations given on a planar domain is established. The results can apply to generalized Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto (SKT) and food pyramid models whose diffusion and reaction can have polynomial growth of any order.
In this paper, we use duality arguments "à la Michel Pierre" to establish global existence of classic solutions for a class of parabolic reaction-diffusion systems modeling, for instance, the evolution of reversible chemical reactions.
We consider combustion problems in the presence of complex chemistry and nonlinear diffusion laws leading to fully nonlinear multispecies reaction-diffusion equations. We establish results of existence of solution and maximum principle, i.e. positivity of the mass fractions, which rely on specific properties of the models. The nonlinear diffusion coefficients are obtained by resolution of the so-called Stefan-Maxwell equations.
We investigate the global time existence of smooth solutions for the Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto system of cross-diffusion equations of two competing species in population dynamics. If there are self-diffusion in one species and no cross-diffusion in the other, we show that the system has a unique smooth solution for all time in bounded domains of any dimension. We obtain this result by deriving global $W^{1,p}$-estimates of Calderón-Zygmund type for a class of nonlinear reaction-diffusion equations with self-diffusion. These estimates are achieved by employing Caffarelli-Peral perturbation te…
We consider reaction diffusion systems where components diffuse inside the domain and react on the surface through mass transport type boundary conditions. Under reasonable hypotheses, we establish the existence of component wise non-negative global solutions which are uniformly bounded in the sup norm.
We introduce a generalized concept of solutions for reaction-diffusion systems and prove their global existence. The only restriction on the reaction function beyond regularity, quasipositivity and mass control is special in that it merely controls the growth of cross-absorptive terms. The result covers nonlinear diffusion and does not rely on an entropy estimate.
We show that reaction-diffusion equations with almost-monotonic nonlinear terms are well-posed in $L^q(Ω)$ for each $1\leq q < \infty$ and the solutions are globally defined.
In this article we investigate the existence and regularity of 1-d steady state fractional order diffusion equations. Two models are investigated:the Riemann-Liouville fractional diffusion equation, and the Riemann-Liouville-Caputo fractional diffusion equation. For these models we explicitly show how the regularity of the solution depends upon the right hand side (rhs) function. We also establish for which Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions the models are well posed.
In this work we use functional methods to prove the boundedness and global existence of solutions for a class of strongly coupled parabolic systems. We apply the results to deduce the global existence of solutions for a classic Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto (SKT) type model, for an extended range of the self-diffusion and cross-diffusion coefficients than those available in the current literature. We provide numerical simulations in 2D, via a spectral Galerkin method to verify our global existence results, as well as to visualize the dynamics of the system.
We consider reaction-diffusion systems where components diffuse inside the domain and react on the surface through mass transport type boundary conditions on an evolving domain. Using Lyapunov functional and duality arguments, we establish the existence of component-wise non-negative global solutions.
In this paper, we study the time-fractional diffusion equation on a metric star graph. The existence and uniqueness of the weak solution are investigated and the proof is based on eigenfunction expansions. Some priori estimates and regularity results of the solution are proved.
We establish the existence of semi-wavefronts solutions for a non-local delayed reaction-diffusion equation with monostable nonlinearity. The existence result is proved for all speeds $c\geq c_\star$, where the determination of $c_\star$ is similar to the calculation of the minimal speed of propagation. The results are applied to some non-local reaction-diffusion epidemic and population models with distributed time delay.
In this work we prove global existence and uniform boundedness of solutions of 2X2 reaction-diffusion systems with control of mass structure and nonlinearities of unlimited growth. Furthermore the results are obtained without restrictions on diffusion terms neither on the initial data. Such systems possess many applications in physical-chemistry. Our technique of proof relies on a judiciously rectified Lyapunov functional used previously by the author in several papers
In this article, we will analyze the existence of Peregrine type solutions for the fractional diffusion reaction equation by applying Splitting-type methods. These functions that have two main characteristics, they are direct sum of functions of periodic type and functions that tend to zero at infinity. Global existence results are obtained for each particular characteristic, for then finally combining both results.
Existence and uniqueness of radially symmetric self-similar very singular solutions are proved for the singular diffusion equation with gradient absorption {equation*} \partial_t u -Δ_{p}u+|\nabla u|^q=0, \ \hbox{in} \ (0,\infty)\times\real^N, {equation*} where $2N/(N+1)
We study the global existence of solutions reaction-diffusion systems with control of mass on multiple domains. Some of these domains overlap, and as a result, an unknown defined on one subdomain can impact another unknown defined on a different domain that intersects with the first. Our results extend those in \cite{fmty}.
A general reaction-diffusion equation with spatiotemporal delay and homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition is considered. The existence and stability of positive steady state solutions are proved via studying an equivalent reaction-diffusion system without nonlocal and delay structure and applying local and global bifurcation theory. The global structure of the set of steady states is characterized according to type of nonlinearities and diffusion coefficient. Our general results are applied to diffusive logistic growth models and Nicholson's blowflies type models.
This paper studies the solutions of a reaction--diffusion system with nonlinearities that generalise the Lengyel--Epstein and FitzHugh--Nagumo nonlinearities. Sufficient conditions are derived for the global asymptotic stability of the system's solutions and confirmed through numerical Examples.
The results of this paper build upon those first obtained by Sznitman and Zeitouni in [11]. We establish, for spacial dimensions greater than two, the existence of a unique invariant measure for isotropic diffusions in random environment which are small perturbations of Brownian motion. Furthermore, we establish a general homogenization result for initial data which are locally measurable with respect to the coefficients.
We consider a reaction-diffusion system which may serve as a model for a ferment catalytic reaction in chemistry. The model consists of a system of reaction diffusion equations with unbounded time dependent coefficients and different polynomial reaction terms. An exponential decay of the globally bounded solutions is proved. The key tool of the proofs are properties of analytic semigroups and some inequalities.
We study the existence of global weak solutions of a nonlinear transport-diffusion equation with a fractional derivative in the time variable and under some extra hypotheses, we also study some regularity properties for this type of solutions. In the system considered here, the diffusion operator is given by a fractional Laplacian and the nonlinear drift is assumed to be divergence free and it is assumed to satisfy some general stability and boundedness properties in Lebesgue spaces.
The traveling waves for surface diffusion of plane curves are studied. We consider an evolving plane curve with two endpoints, which can move freely on the x-axis with generating constant contact angles. For the evolution of this plane curve governed by surface diffusion, we discuss the existence, the uniqueness and the convexity of traveling waves. The main results show that the uniqueness and the convexity can be lost in depending on the conditions of the contact angles, although the existence holds for any contact angles in the interval $(0,π/2)$.
In this work we study a degenerate pseudo-parabolic system with cross diffusion describing the evolution of the densities of an unsaturated two-phase flow mixture with dynamic capillary pressure in porous medium with saturation-dependent relaxation parameter and hypocoercive diffusion operator modeling cross diffusion. The equations are derived in a thermodynamically correct way from mass conservation laws. Global-in-time existence of weak solutions to the system in a bounded domain with equilibrium boundary conditions is shown. The main tools of the analysis are an entropy inequality and a cr…
In this paper, we consider a drift-diffusion system describing the corrosion of an iron based alloy in a nuclear waste repository. In comparison with the classical drift-diffusion system arising in the modeling of semiconductor devices, the originality of the corrosion model lies in the boundary conditions which are of Robin type and induce an additional coupling between the equations. We prove the existence of a weak solution by passing to the limit on a sequence of approximate solutions given by a semi-discretization in time.
A time-space fractional reaction-diffusion equation in a bounded domain is considered. Under some conditions on the initial data, we show that solutions may experience blow-up in a finite time. However, for realistic initial conditions, solutions are global in time. Moreover, the asymptotic behavior of bounded solutions is analysed.
In this paper, we study degenerate parabolic system, which are strongly coupled. We prove general existence result, but the uniqueness remains an open question. Our proof of existence is based on a crucial entropy estimate which both control the gradient of the solution and the non-negativity of the solution. Our system are of porous medium type and our method applies to models in seawater intrusion.
We consider a class of cross diffusion systems with degenerate (or porous media type) diffusion which is inspired by models in mathematical biology/ecology with zero self diffusions. Known techniques for scalar equations are no longer available here as maximum/comparison principles are generally unavailable for systems. However, we will provide the existence of weak solutions to the degenerate systems under mild integrability conditions of strong solutions to nondegenerate systems and show that they converge to a weak solution of the degerate system. These conditions will be verified for the m…
We study the existence of segregated solutions to a class of reaction-diffusion systems with strong interactions, arising in many physical applications. These special solutions are obtained as weak limits of minimizers of a family of perturbed functionals. We prove some a priori estimates through a minimization procedure which is nonstandard in the parabolic theory: our approach is purely variational and all the information is encoded in the family of functionals we consider.
We consider a reaction-diffusion system where some components react and diffuse on the boundary of a region, while other components diffuse in the interior and react with those on the boundary through mass transport. We establish local well-posedness and global existence of solutions for these systems using classical potential theory and linear estimates for initial boundary value problems.
Keller-Segel systems in two and three space dimensions with an additional cross-diffusion term in the equation for the chemical concentration are analyzed. The cross-diffusion term has a stabilizing effect and leads to the global-in-time existence of weak solutions. The limit of vanishing cross-diffusion parameter is proved rigorously in the parabolic-elliptic and parabolic-parabolic cases. When the signal production is sublinear, the existence of global-in-time weak solutions as well as the convergence of the solutions to those of the classical parabolic-elliptic Keller--Segel equations are p…
We adapt the improved duality estimates for bounded coefficients derived by Canizo et al. to the framework of cross diffusion. Since the estimates can not be directly applied we need to derive a time discrete version of their results and apply it to an implicit semi-discretization in time of the cross diffusion systems. This leads to new global existence results for cross diffusion systems with bounded cross diffusion pressures and potentially superquadratic reaction.
We describe the accelerated propagation wave arising from a non-local reaction-diffusion equation. This equation originates from an ecological problem, where accelerated biological invasions have been documented. The analysis is based on the comparison of this model with a related local equation, and on the analysis of the dynamics of the solutions of this second model thanks to probabilistic methods.
We present new results of existence of global solutions for a class of reaction cross-diffusion systems of two equations presenting a cross-diffusion term in the first equation, and possibly presenting a self-diffusion term in any (or both) of the two equations. This class of systems arises in Population Dynamics, and notably includes the triangular SKT system. In particular, we recover and extend existing results for the triangular SKT system. Our proof relies on entropy and duality methods.
The aim of this note is to present preliminary existence results for a system of cross-diffusion equations defined on a domain with moving boundaries, which model the evolution of the concentrations of different chemical species in a solid during a Chemical Vapor Deposition process. The system of equations, when the domain remains fixed over time, can be seen formally as a gradient flow system which can be analyzed using the boundedness by entropy method introduced by Burger and Jüngel. Preliminary existence results are presented in the case of a one-dimensional moving boundary domain.
This paper is devoted to the use of the entropy and duality methods for the existence theory of reaction-cross diffusion systems consisting of two equations, in any dimension of space. Those systems appear in population dynamics when the diffusion rates of individuals of two species depend on the concentration of individuals of the same species (self-diffusion), or of the other species (cross diffusion).
This paper studies the existence and uniqueness of local weak solutions to the d-dimensional tropical climate model without thermal diffusion. We establish that, when $α=β\geq1$, $η=0$, any initial data $(u_{0},v_{0})\in B_{2,1}^{1+\frac{d}{2}-2α}(\mathbb{R}^{d})$ and $θ_{0}\in B_{2,1}^{1+\frac{d}{2}-α}(\mathbb{R}^{d})$ yields a unique weak solution.
In this work we study the existence of classical solutions for a class of reaction-diffusion systems with quadratic growth naturally arising in mass action chemistry when studying networks of reactions of the type $A_i+A_j \rightleftharpoons A_k$ with Fickian diffusion, where the diffusion coefficients might depend on time, space and on all the concentrations $c_i$ of the chemical species. In the case of one single reaction, we prove global existence for space dimensions $N\leq 5$. In the more restrictive case of diffusion coefficients of the type $d_i(c_i)$, we use an $L^2$-approach to prove …
We give an existence proof for distribution solutions to a scalar reaction diffusion equation, with the aim of illustrating both the differences and the common ingredients of the nonstandard and standard approaches. In particular, our proof shows how the operation of taking the standard part of a nonstandard real number can replace several different compactness theorems, such as Ascoli's theorem and the Banach--Alaoglu theorem on weak$^*$-compactness of the unit ball in the dual of a Banach space.
In this paper, we study a strongly coupled two-prey one-predator system. We first prove the unique positive equilibrium solution is globally asymptotically stable for the corresponding kinetic system (the system without diffusion) and remains locally linearly stable for the reaction-diffusion system without cross-diffusion, hence it does not belong to the classical Turing instability scheme. Moreover we prove that the positive equilibrium solution is globally asymptotically stable for the reaction-diffusion system without cross-diffusion. But it becomes linear unstable only when cross-diffusio…
We are concerned with the study of the well-posedness of a nonlinear diffusion equation with a monotonically increasing multivalued time-dependent nonlinearity derived from a convex continuous potential having a superlinear growth to infinity. The results in this paper state that the solution of the nonlinear equation can be retrieved as the null minimizer of an appropriate minimization problem for a convex functional involving the potential and its conjugate. This approach, inspired by the Brezis-Ekeland variational principle, provides new existence results under minimal growth and coercivity…
In this paper, we consider a generalized model of $2\times 2$ Keller-Segel system with nonlinear chemical gradient and small cell diffusion. The existence of the traveling pulses for such equations is established by the methods of geometric singular perturbation (GSP in short) and trapping regions from dynamical systems theory. By the technique of GSP, we show that the necessary condition for the existence of traveling pulses is that their limiting profiles with vanishing diffusion can only consist of the slow flows on the critical manifold of the corresponding algebraic-differential system. W…
The paper is devoted to the investigation of a reaction-diffusion system of equations describing the process of blood coagulation. Existence of pulses solutions, that is, positive stationary solutions with zero limit at infinity is studied. It is shown that such solutions exist if and only if the speed of the travelling wave described by the same system is positive. The proof is based on the Leray-Schauder method using topological degree for elliptic problems in unbounded domains and a priori estimates of solutions in some appropriate weighted spaces.
