In this paper a new parameter for hypergraphs called hypergraph infection is defined. This concept generalizes zero forcing in graphs to hypergraphs. The exact value of the infection number of complete and complete bipartite hypergraphs is determined. A formula for the infection number for interval hypergraphs and several families of cyclic hypergraphs is given. The value of the infection number for a hypergraph whose edges form a symmetric t-design is given, and bounds are determined for a hypergraph whose edges are a t-design. Finally, the infection number for several hypergraph products and line graphs are considered.
The power domination problem seeks to find the placement of the minimum number of sensors needed to monitor an electric power network. We generalize the power domination problem to hypergraphs using the infection rule from Bergen et al: given an initial set of observed vertices, $S_0$, a set $A\subseteq S_0$ may infect an edge $e$ if $A\subseteq e$ and for any unobserved vertex $v$, if $A\cup \{v\}$ is contained in an edge, then $v\in e$. We combine a domination step with this infection rule to create \emph{infectious power domination}. We compare this new parameter to the previous generalizat…
The concept of zero forcing is extended from graphs to uniform hypergraphs in analogy with the way zero forcing was defined as an upper bound for the maximum nullity of the family of symmetric matrices whose nonzero pattern of entries is described by a given graph: A family of symmetric hypermatrices is associated with a uniform hypergraph and zeros are forced in a null vector. The value of the hypergraph zero forcing number and maximum nullity are determined for various families of uniform hypergraphs and the effects of several graph operations on the hypergraph zero forcing number are determ…
There is interesting internal structure in the nullspaces of graph and hypergraph adjacency matrices, especially for trees, bipartite graphs, and related combinatorial classes. The zero loci of nullvectors, i.e., their zero coordinates' indices, encode information about matchings, coverings, and edges' influence on rank. This set system is the lattice of flats of a ``kernel matroid'', a subsystem of which are the ``stalled'' sets closed under skew zero forcing (SZF), a graph percolation/infection model known to have connections with rank and nullity. For a wide variety of graphs, the lattice o…
The graph entropy describes the structural information of graph. Motivated by the definition of graph entropy in general graphs, the graph entropy of hypergraphs based on Laplacian degree are defined. Some results on graph entropy of simple graphs are extended to k-uniform hypergraphs. Using an edge-moving operation, the maximum and minimum graph entropy based on Laplacian degrees are determined in k-uniform hypertrees, unicyclic k-uniform hypergraphs, bicyclic k-uniform hypergraphs and k-uniform chemical hypertrees, respectively, and the corresponding extremal graphs are determined.
We study hypergraphs which are uniquely determined by their chromatic, independence and matching polynomials. B. Bollobás, L. Pebody and O. Riordan (2000) conjectured (BPR-conjecture) that almost all graphs are uniquely determined by their chromatic polynomials. We show that for $r$-uniform hypergraphs with $r \geq 3$ this is almost never the case. This disproves the analolgue of the BPR-conjecture for $3$-uniform hypergraphs. For $r =2$ this also holds for the independence polynomial, as shown by J.A. Makowsky and V. Rakita (2017), whereas for the chromatic and matching polynomial this remain…
A (simple) hypergraph is a family H of pairwise incomparable sets of a finite set. We say that a hypergraph H is a domination hypergraph if there is at least a graph G such that the collection of minimal dominating sets of G is equal to H. Given a hypergraph, we are interested in determining if it is a domination hypergraph and, if this is not the case, we want to find domination hypergraphs in some sense close to it, the domination completions. Here we will focus on the family of hypergraphs containing all the subsets with the same cardinality, the uniform hypergraphs of maximum size. Specifi…
We study the number of lines in hypergraphs in a more symmetric setting, where both the hypergraph and its complement are considered. In the general case and in some special cases, the lower bounds on the number of lines are much higher than their counterparts in single hypergraph setting or admit more elegant proofs. We show that the minimum value of product of the number of lines in both hypergraphs on $n$ points is easily determined as $\binom{n}{2}$; and the minimum value of their sum is between $Ω(n)$ and $O(n \log n)$. We also study some restricted classes of hypergraphs; and determine t…
Let $χ_l(G)$ denote the list chromatic number of the $r$-uniform hypergraph~$G$. Extending a result of Alon for graphs, Saxton and the second author used the method of containers to prove that, if $G$ is simple and $d$-regular, then $χ_l(G)\ge (1/(r-1)+o(1))\log_r d$. To see how close this inequality is to best possible, we examine $χ_l(G)$ when $G$ is a random $r$-partite hypergraph with $n$ vertices in each class. The value when $r=2$ was determined by Alon and Krivelevich, here we show that $χ_l(G)= (g(r,α)+o(1))\log_r d$ almost surely, where $d$ is the expected average degree of~$G$ and $α…
For $n\geq 3$, let $r=r(n)\geq 3$ be an integer. A hypergraph is $r$-uniform if each edge is a set of $r$ vertices, and is said to be linear if two edges intersect in at most one vertex. In this paper, the number of linear $r$-uniform hypergraphs on $n\to\infty$ vertices is determined asymptotically when the number of edges is $m(n)=o(r^{-3}n^{ \frac32})$. As one application, we find the probability of linearity for the independent-edge model of random $r$-uniform hypergraph when the expected number of edges is $o(r^{-3}n^{ \frac32})$. We also find the probability that a random $r$-uniform lin…
Let a 2 to 1 directed hypergraph be a 3-uniform hypergraph where every edge has two tail vertices and one head vertex. For any such directed hypergraph F let the nth extremal number of F be the maximum number of edges that any directed hypergraph on n vertices can have without containing a copy of F. There are actually two versions the directed hypergraph model for this problem: the standard version where every triple of vertices is allowed to have up to all three possible directed edges and the oriented version where each triple can have at most one directed edge. In this paper, we determine …

In this paper we study the maximum number of hyperedges which may be in an $r$-uniform hypergraph under the restriction that no pair of vertices has more than $t$ Berge paths of length $k$ between them. When $r=t=2$, this is the even-cycle problem asking for $\mathrm{ex}(n, C_{2k})$. We extend results of Füredi and Simonovits and of Conlon, who studied the problem when $r=2$. In particular, we show that for fixed $k$ and $r$, there is a constant $t$ such that the maximum number of edges can be determined in order of magnitude.
For any given integer $r\geqslant 3$, let $k=k(n)$ be an integer with $r\leqslant k\leqslant n$. A hypergraph is $r$-uniform if each edge is a set of $r$ vertices, and is said to be linear if two edges intersect in at most one vertex. Let $A_1,\ldots,A_k$ be a given $k$-partition of $[n]$ with $|A_i|=n_i\geqslant 1$. An $r$-uniform hypergraph $H$ is called {\it $k$-partite} if each edge $e$ satisfies $|e\cap A_i|\leqslant 1$ for $1\leqslant i\leqslant k$. In this paper, the number of linear $k$-partite $r$-uniform hypergraphs on $n\to\infty$ vertices is determined asymptotically when the numbe…
A celebrated result of Rödl and Ruciński states that for every graph $F$, which is not a forest of stars and paths of length $3$, and fixed number of colours $r\ge 2$ there exist positive constants $c, C$ such that for $p \leq cn^{-1/m_2(F)}$ the probability that every colouring of the edges of the random graph $G(n,p)$ contains a monochromatic copy of $F$ is $o(1)$ (the "0-statement"), while for $p \geq Cn^{-1/m_2(F)}$ it is $1-o(1)$ (the "1-statement"). Here $m_2(F)$ denotes the $2$-density of $F$. On the other hand, the case where $F$ is a forest of stars has a coarse threshold which is det…
Background: Representing biological networks as graphs is a powerful approach to reveal underlying patterns, signatures, and critical components from high-throughput biomolecular data. However, graphs do not natively capture the multi-way relationships present among genes and proteins in biological systems. Hypergraphs are generalizations of graphs that naturally model multi-way relationships and have shown promise in modeling systems such as protein complexes and metabolic reactions. In this paper we seek to understand how hypergraphs can more faithfully identify, and potentially predict, imp…
A set $A$ of vertices in an $r$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal H$ is covered in $\mathcal H$ if there is some vertex $u\not\in A$ such that, for every $(r-1)$-set $B\subset A$, the set $\{u\}\cup B$ is in $\mathcal H$. Erdos and Moser (1970) determined the minimum number of edges in a graph on $n$ vertices such that every $k$-set is covered. We extend this result to $r$-uniform hypergraphs on sufficiently many vertices, and determine the extremal hypergraphs. We also address the problem for directed graphs.
We establish that in the large degree limit, the value of certain optimization problems on sparse random hypergraphs is determined by an appropriate Gaussian optimization problem. This approach was initiated in Dembo et. al.(2016) for extremal cuts of graphs. The usefulness of this technique is further illustrated by deriving the optimal value for Max $q$-cut on Erdős-Rényi and random regular graphs, Max XORSAT on Erdős-Rényi hypergraphs, and the min-bisection for the Stochastic Block Model.
An edge-colored hypergraph is rainbow if all of its edges have different colors. Given two hypergraphs $\mathcal{H}$ and $\mathcal{G}$, the anti-Ramsey number $ar(\mathcal{G}, \mathcal{H})$ of $\mathcal{H}$ in $\mathcal{G}$ is the maximum number of colors needed to color the edges of $\mathcal{G}$ so that there does not exist a rainbow copy of $\mathcal{H}$. Li et al. determined the anti-Ramsey number of $k$-matchings in complete bipartite graphs. Jin and Zang showed the uniqueness of the extremal coloring. In this paper, as a generalization of these results, we determine the anti-Ramsey numbe…
For two $s$-uniform hypergraphs $H$ and $F$, the Turán number $ex_s(H,F)$ is the maximum number of edges in an $F$-free subgraph of $H$. Let $s, r, k, n_1, \ldots, n_r$ be integers satisfying $2\leq s\leq r$ and $n_1\leq n_2\leq \cdots\leq n_r$. De Silva, Heysse and Young determined $ex_2(K_{n_1, \ldots, n_r}, kK_2)$ and De Silva, Heysse, Kapilow, Schenfisch and Young determined $ex_2(K_{n_1, \ldots, n_r},kK_r)$. In this paper, as a generalization of these results, we consider three Turán-type problems for $k$ disjoint cliques in $r$-partite $s$-uniform hypergraphs. First, we consider a multi-…
Recently O. Bernardi gave a formula for the Tutte polynomial $T(x,y)$ of a graph, based on spanning trees and activities just like the original definition, but using a fixed ribbon structure to order the set of edges in a different way for each tree. The interior polynomial $I$ is a generalization of $T(x,1)$ to hypergraphs. We supply a Bernardi-type description of $I$ using a ribbon structure on the underlying bipartite graph $G$. Our formula works because it is determined by the Ehrhart polynomial of the root polytope of $G$ in the same way as $I$ is. To prove this we interpret the Bernardi …
In this paper we generalize the concept of uniquely $K_r$-saturated graphs to hypergraphs. Let $K_r^{(k)}$ denote the complete $k$-uniform hypergraph on $r$ vertices. For integers $k,r,n$ such that $2\le k <r<n$, a $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$ with $n$ vertices is uniquely $K_r^{(k)}$-saturated if $H$ does not contain $K_r^{(k)}$ but adding to $H$ any $k$-set that is not a hyperedge of $H$ results in exactly one copy of $K_r^{(k)}$. Among uniquely $K_r^{(k)}$-saturated hypergraphs, the interesting ones are the primitive ones that do not have a dominating vertex---a vertex belonging to all possib…

The extension of an $r$-uniform hypergraph $G$ is obtained from it by adding for every pair of vertices of $G$, which is not covered by an edge in $G$, an extra edge containing this pair and $r-2$ new vertices. Keevash and Sidorenko~ have previously determined Turán densities of two families of hypergraph extensions. We determine the Turán numbers for these families, using classical stability techniques and new tools introduced in our earlier paper.
In $\HH$-bootstrap percolation, a set $A \subset V(\HH)$ of initially 'infected' vertices spreads by infecting vertices which are the only uninfected vertex in an edge of the hypergraph $\HH$. A particular case of this is the $H$-bootstrap process, in which $\HH$ encodes copies of $H$ in a graph $G$. We find the minimum size of a set $A$ that leads to complete infection when $G$ and $H$ are powers of complete graphs and $\HH$ encodes induced copies of $H$ in $G$. The proof uses linear algebra, a technique that is new in bootstrap percolation, although standard in the study of weakly saturated …
Erdős and Lovász noticed that an $r$-uniform intersecting hypergraph $H$ with maximal covering number, that is $τ(H)=r$, must have at least $\frac{8}{3}r-3$ edges. There has been no improvement on this lower bound for 45 years. We try to understand the reason by studying some small cases to see whether the truth lies very close to this simple bound. Let $q(r)$ denote the minimum number of edges in an intersecting $r$-uniform hypergraph. It was known that $q(3)=6$ and $q(4)=9$. We obtain the following new results: The extremal example for uniformity 4 is unique. Somewhat surprisingly it is not …
Given a family of $r$-uniform hypergraphs ${\cal F}$ (or $r$-graphs for brevity), the Turán number $ex(n,{\cal F})$ of ${\cal F}$ is the maximum number of edges in an $r$-graph on $n$ vertices that does not contain any member of ${\cal F}$. A pair $\{u,v\}$ is covered in a hypergraph $G$ if some edge of $G$ contains $\{u,v\}$. Given an $r$-graph $F$ and a positive integer $p\geq n(F)$, let $H^F_p$ denote the $r$-graph obtained as follows. Label the vertices of $F$ as $v_1,\ldots, v_{n(F)}$. Add new vertices $v_{n(F)+1},\ldots, v_p$. For each pair of vertices $v_i,v_j$ not covered in $F$, add a…
The $k$-power hypergraph $G^{(k)}$ is the $k$-uniform hypergraph that is obtained by adding $k-2$ new vertices to each edge of a graph $G$, for $k \geq 3$. A parity-closed walk in $G$ is a closed walk that uses each edge an even number of times. In an earlier paper, we determined the eigenvalues of the adjacency tensor of $G^{(k)}$ using the eigenvalues of signed subgraphs of $G$. Here, we express the entire spectrum (that is, we determine all multiplicities and the characteristic polynomial) of $G^{(k)}$ in terms of parity-closed walks of $G$. Moreover, we give an explicit expression for the …
Combinatorial group testing (CGT) is used to identify defective items from a set of items by grouping them together and performing a small number of tests on the groups. Recently, group testing has been used to design efficient COVID-19 testing, so that resources are saved while still identifying all infected individuals. Due to test waiting times, a focus is given to non-adaptive CGT, where groups are designed a priori and all tests can be done in parallel. The design of the groups can be done using Cover-Free Families (CFFs). The main assumption behind CFFs is that a small number $d$ of posi…
One of the central questions in Ramsey theory asks how small can be the size of the largest clique and independent set in a graph on $N$ vertices. By the celebrated result of Erdős from 1947, the random graph on $N$ vertices with edge probability $1/2$, contains no clique or independent set larger than $2\log_2 N$, with high probability. Finding explicit constructions of graphs with similar Ramsey-type properties is a famous open problem. A natural approach is to construct such graphs using algebraic tools. Say that an $r$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ is \emph{algebraic of complexity $(n,d…
Given two $k$-uniform hypergraphs $F$ and $G$, we say that $G$ has an $F$-covering if every vertex in $G$ is contained in a copy of $F$. For $1\le i \le k-1$, let $c_i(n,F)$ be the least integer such that every $n$-vertex $k$-uniform hypergraph $G$ with $δ_i(G)> c_i(n,F)$ has an $F$-covering. The covering problem has been systematically studied by Falgas-Ravry and Zhao [Codegree thresholds for covering 3-uniform hypergraphs, SIAM J. Discrete Math., 2016]. Last year, Falgas-Ravry, Markström, and Zhao [Triangle-degrees in graphs and tetrahedron coverings in 3-graphs, Combinatorics, Probability a…
The generalized Turán number $\mathrm{ex}(n,H,F)$ is the largest number of copies of $H$ in $n$-vertex $F$-free graphs. We denote by $tF$ the vertex-disjoint union of $t$ copies of $F$. Gerbner, Methuku and Vizer in 2019 determined the order of magnitude of $\mathrm{ex}(n,K_s,tK_r)$. We extend this result in three directions. First, we determine $\mathrm{ex}(n,K_s,tK_r)$ exactly for sufficiently large $n$. Second, we determine the asymptotics of the analogous number for $p$-uniform hypergraphs. Third, we determine the order of magnitude of $\mathrm{ex}(n,H,tK_r)$ for every graph $H$, and also …
