The longitudinal ($Γ_1$) and transverse ($Γ_2$) decay rates of a two-level quantum system have profound influence on its evolution. Atomic systems with $Γ_2=\tfrac{1}{2}Γ_1$ have been studied extensively, but with the rise of solid-state quantum devices it is also important to consider the effect of stronger transverse relaxation due to interactions with the solid environment. Here we study the quantum dynamics of a single organic dye molecule driven by a laser. We measure the variation of $Γ_2$ with temperature and determine the activation energy for thermal dephasing of the optical dipole. Then we measure the second-order correlation function $g^{(2)}(τ)$ of the light emitted by the molecule for various ratios $Γ_2/Γ_1$ and saturation parameters $S$. We show that the general solution to the optical Bloch equations accurately describes the observed quantum dynamics over a wide range of these parameters, and we discuss the limitations of the various approximate expressions for $g^{(2)}(τ)$ that appear in the literature.
By using the zero-phonon line emission of an individual organic molecule, we realized a source of indistinguishable single photons in the near infrared. A Hong-Ou-Mandel interference experiment is performed and a two-photon coalescence probability of higher than 50% at 2 K is obtained. The contribution of the temperature-dependent dephasing processes to the two-photon interference contrast is studied. We show that the molecule delivers nearly ideal indistinguishable single photons at the lowest temperatures when the dephasing is nearly lifetime limited. This source is used to generate post-sel…
We study relaxation and dephasing in a strongly driven two-level system interacting with its environment. We develop a theory which gives a straightforward physical picture of the complex dynamics of the system in terms of dressed states. In addition to the dressing of the energy diagram, we describe the dressing of relaxation and dephasing. We find a good quantitative agreement between the theoretical calculations and measurements of a superconducting qubit driven by an intense microwave field. The competition of various processes leads to a rich structure in the observed behavior, including …
Organic molecules have recently gained attention as novel sources of single photons. We present a joint experiment--theory analysis of the temperature-dependent emission spectra, zero-phonon linewidth, and second-order correlation function of light emitted from a single molecule. We observe spectra with a zero-phonon-line together with several additional sharp peaks, broad phonon sidebands, and a strongly temperature dependent homogeneous broadening. Our model includes both localised vibrational modes of the molecule and a thermal phonon bath, which we include non-perturbatively, and is able c…
We proposed an analytical model to analyze the Landau-Zener interference in a multilevel superconducting flux qubit driven by large amplitude external fields. Our analytical results agree remarkably with those of the experiment [Nature 455, 51 (2008)]. Moreover, we studied the effect of driving-frequency and dephasing rate on the interference. The dephasing generally destroys the interference while increasing frequency rebuilds the interference at large dephasing rate. At certain driving frequency and dephasing rate, the interference shows some anomalous features as observed in recent experime…
The dynamics of atom-molecule conversion system subject to dephasing noises is studied in this paper. With the dephasing master equation and the mean-field theory, we drive a Bloch equation for the system, this equation is compared with the Bloch equation derived by the Bogoliubov-Born-Green-Kirkwood-Yvon (BBGKY) hierarchy truncation approach. Fixed points of the system are calculated by solving both the Bloch equations and the master equation, comparison between these two calculations suggests that while in a short time the mean-field theory is a good approximation for the atom-molecule conve…
We study dephasing-enhanced transport in boundary-driven quasi-periodic systems. Specifically we consider dephasing modelled by current preserving Lindblad dissipators acting on the non-interacting Aubry-André-Harper (AAH) and Fibonacci bulk systems. The former is known to undergo a critical localization transition with a suppression of ballistic transport above a critical value of the potential. At the critical point, the presence of non-ergodic extended states yields anomalous sub-diffusion. The Fibonacci model, on the other hand, yields anomalous transport with a continuously varying expone…
We study the entanglement dynamics for a two-spin system coupled to a spin environment of different configurations by z-x type interaction. The models considered in this paper are solved both analytically and numerically giving rise to some concise analytical expressions when certain approximations are properly made. Our purpose is to find how the initial states of the environment with different numbers of spins affect the decay or revival of the entanglement between central qubits. In Particular, it is found that the block-entangled environment could speed up the decay and revival of the qubi…
We monitor the Landau-Zener dynamics of a single-ion magnet in a spin-transistor geometry. For increasing field-sweep rates, the spin reversal probability shows increasing deviations from that of a closed system. In the low-conductance limit, such deviations are shown to result from a dephasing process. In particular, the observed behaviors are succesfully simulated by means of an adiabatic master equation, with time averaged dephasing (Lindblad) operators. The time average is tentatively interpeted in terms of the finite time resolution of the continuous measurement.
The generated magnitude of quadrature squeezing in a cavity-coupled ensemble, which is continuously driven using a coherent off-axis field, is theoretically explored. Using a truncated set of equations-of-motion derived from a Dicke Hamiltonian, steady-state quadrature squeezing of the cavity field is numerically calculated to approach a limit of -3 dB, while frequency-modulated quadrature squeezing approaches a limit of -14 dB, in the absence of pure-dephasing, and as a function of the ensemble's size and detuning. The impact of pure-dephasing on steady-state quadrature squeezing is shown to …
High contrast matter-wave interferometry is essential in various fundamental quantum mechanical experiments as well as for technical applications. Thereby, contrast and sensitivity are typically reduced by decoherence and dephasing effects. While decoherence accounts for a general loss of quantum information in a system due to entanglement with the environment, dephasing is due to collective time-dependent external phase shifts, which can be related to temperature drifts, mechanical vibrations or electromagnetic oscillations. In contrast to decoherence, dephasing can in principle be reversed. …
Molecular Nanomagnets may enable the implementation of qudit-based quantum error-correction codes which exploit the many spin levels naturally embedded in a single molecule, a promising step towards scalable quantum processors. To fully realize the potential of this approach, a microscopic understanding of the errors corrupting the quantum information encoded in a molecular qudit is essential, together with the development of tailor-made quantum error correction strategies. We address these central points by first studying dephasing effects on the molecular spin qudit produced by the interacti…
We investigate the nonclassicality of a two-level system driven by an external time-dependent field in the presence of dephasing. We consider two criteria for nonclassicality, one based on the quantum witness built upon the no-signaling in time condition and one based on the temporal steering inequality, for a linearly driven qubit. We show that both strongly depend on the amplitude of the driving field. As a result, we demonstrate that the quantumness of the two-level system can be successfully controlled by properly tuning the driving strength. We establish in particular that maximal violati…
The molecular photo cell, i.e., a single molecule donor-acceptor complex, beside being technologically important, is a paradigmatic example of a many-body system operating in strong non-equilibrium. The quantum transport and the photo-voltaic energy conversion efficiency of the photocell, attached to two external leads, are investigated within the open quantum system approach by solving the Lindblad master equation. The interplay of the vibrational degrees of freedom corresponding to the molecules (via the electron-phonon interaction) and the environment (via dephasing) shows its signature in …
Arrays of covalently bound organic molecules possess potential for light-harvesting and energy transfer applications due to the strong coherent dipole-dipole coupling between the transition dipole moments of the molecules involved. Here, we show that such molecular systems, based on perylene-molecules, can be considered as arrays of qubits that are amenable for laser-driven quantum coherent control. The perylene monomers exhibit dephasing times longer than four orders of magnitude a typical gating time, thus allowing for the execution of a large number of gate operations on the sub-picosecond …

We theoretically demonstrate the enhanced and dephasing immune squeezing in the resonance fluorescence of a single quantum dot (QD) confined to a pillar-microcavity and driven by a continuous wave laser. We employ a formalism based on Polaron master equation theory for incorporating the influence of exciton-phonon coupling quite accurately in the dot-cavity system. We show a significant enhancement of squeezing due to cavity coupling of the QD as compared to that of an ideal single two-level system in free space. Particularly, we show a four-fold enhancement in squeezing as compared to that of…
We demonstrate that an optically driven spin of a carrier in a quantum dot undergoes indirect dephasing via conditional optically induced charge evolution even in the absence of any direct interaction between the spin and its environment. A generic model for the indirect dephasing with a three-component system with spin, charge, and reservoir is proposed. This indirect decoherence channel is studied for the optical spin manipulation in a quantum dot with a microscopic description of the charge-phonon interaction taking into account its non-Markovian nature.
Considering a multi-pathway structure in a light-harvesting complex of photosynthesis, we investigate the role of energy-level mismatches between antenna molecules in transferring the absorbed energy to a reaction center. We find a condition in which the antenna molecules faithfully play their roles: Their effective absorption ratios are larger than those of the receiver molecule directly coupled to the reaction center. In the absence of energy-level mismatches and dephasing noise, there arises quantum destructive interference between multiple paths that restricts the energy transfer. On the o…
Single molecules in solid-state matrices have been proposed as sources of single-photon Fock states back 20 years ago. Their success in quantum optics and in many other research fields stems from the simple recipes used in the preparation of samples, with hundreds of nominally identical and isolated molecules. Main challenges as of today for their application in photonic quantum technologies are the optimization of light extraction and the on-demand emission of indistinguishable photons. We here present Hong-Ou-Mandel experiments with photons emitted by a single molecule of dibenzoterrylene in…
In a closely packed ensemble of quantum emitters, cooperative effects are typically suppressed due to the dephasing induced by the dipole-dipole interactions. Here, we show that by adding sufficiently strong collective dephasing cooperative effects can be restored. In particular, we show that the dipole force on a closely packed ensemble of strongly driven two-level quantum emitters, which collectively dephase, is enhanced in comparison to the dipole force on an independent non-interacting ensemble. Our results are relevant to solid state systems with embedded quantum emitters such as colour c…
We {\it analytically} investigate the population and coherence dynamics and relaxations in the vibrational energy transport in molecules. The corresponding two time scales $t_1$ and $t_2$ are explored. Coherence-population entanglement is found to considerably promote the time scale $t_2$ for dephasing and the amplitude of coherence. This is attributed to the suppression of the environment-induced drift force by coherence. Moreover the population imbalance (magnetization) is shown to be significantly amplified with the coherence-population entanglement. Contrary to the previous studies, we exa…
The coupling between single-photon emitters and phonons opens many possibilities to store and transmit quantum properties. In this paper we apply the independent boson model to describe the coupling between an optically driven two-level system and a discrete phonon mode. Tailored optical driving allows not only to generate coherent phonon states, but also to generate coherent superpositions in the form of Schrödinger cat states in the phonon system. We analyze the influence of decay and dephasing of the two-level system on these phonon preparation protocols. We find that the decay transforms t…
We discuss femtosecond Raman type techniques to control molecular vibrations, which can be implemented for internal state cooling from Feshbach states with the use of optical frequency combs with and without modulation. The technique makes use of multiple two-photon resonances induced by optical frequencies present in the comb. It provides us with a useful tool to study the details of molecular dynamics at ultracold temperatures. In our theoretical model we take into account decoherence in the form of spontaneous emission and collisional dephasing in order to ascertain an accurate model of the…
While typical theories of atom-light interactions treat the atomic medium as being smooth, it is well-known that microscopic optical effects driven by atomic granularity, dipole-dipole interactions, and multiple scattering can lead to important effects. Recently, for example, it was experimentally observed that these ingredients can lead to a fundamental, density-dependent dephasing of optical spin waves in a disordered atomic medium. Here, we go beyond the short-time and dilute limits considered previously, to develop a comprehensive theory of dephasing dynamics for arbitrary times and atomic…
A key insight from recent studies is that noise, such as dephasing, can improve the efficiency of quantum transport by suppressing coherent single-particle interference effects. However, it is not yet clear whether dephasing can enhance transport in an interacting many-body system. Here, we address this question by analyzing the transport properties of a boundary driven spinless fermion chain with nearest-neighbor interactions subject to bulk dephasing. The many-body nonequilibrium stationary state is determined using large-scale matrix product simulations of the corresponding quantum master e…
Reliable single photon sources constitute the basis of schemes for quantum communication and measurement based quantum computing. Solid state single photon sources based on quantum dots are convenient and versatile but the electronic transitions that generate the photons are subject to interactions with lattice vibrations. Using a microscopic model of electron-phonon interactions and a quantum master equation, we here examine phonon-induced decoherence and assess its impact on the rate of production, and indistinguishability, of single photons emitted from an optically driven quantum dot syste…
The feasibility of high-fidelity single-qubit operations of a hole spin in a quantum dot molecule by electric g tensor control is demonstrated. Apart from a constant external magnetic field the proposed scheme allows for an exclusively electric control of the hole spin. Realistic electric gate bias profiles are identified for various qubit operations using process-tomography-based optimal control. They are shown to be remarkably robust against decoherence and dissipation arising from the interaction of the hole with host-lattice nuclear spins and phonons, with a fidelity loss of $\approx$ 1 pe…
