We construct a Borel graph G such that ZF+DC+"There are no maximal independent sets in G" is equiconsistent with ZFC+"There exists an inaccessible cardinal".
Assuming that $0^\dagger$ does not exist, we prove that if there is a partition of $\mathbb R$ into $\aleph_ω$ Borel sets, then there is also a partition of $\mathbb R$ into $\aleph_{ω+1}$ Borel sets.
We discuss the Borel Tukey ordering on cardinal invariants of the continuum. We observe that this ordering makes sense for a larger class of cardinals than has previously been considered. We then provide a Borel version of a large portion of van Douwen's diagram. For instance, although the usual proof of the inequality $\mathfrak p\leq\mathfrak b$ does not provide a Borel Tukey map, we show that in fact there is one. Afterwards, we revisit a result of Mildenberger concerning a generalization of the unsplitting and splitting numbers. Lastly, we show that the inclusion ordering on $\mathcal P(ω)…
Boykin and Jackson recently introduced a property of countable Borel equivalence relations called Borel boundedness, which they showed is closely related to the union problem for hyperfinite equivalence relations. In this paper, we introduce a family of properties of countable Borel equivalence relations which correspond to combinatorial cardinal characteristics of the continuum in the same way that Borel boundedness corresponds to the bounding number $\mathfrak b$. We analyze some of the basic behavior of these properties, showing for instance that the property corresponding to the splitting …
We prove that consistently, cov($\mathcal{M})< λ_\mathbf{0} < λ_\mathbf{1} < λ_\mathbf{\infty} < 2^{\aleph_0}$, where $λ_\mathbf{0}$ denotes the weak Borel chromatic number of the Kechris-Solecki-Todorčević graph $\mathbb{G}_0$, that is, the minimal cardinality of a $\mathbb{G}_0$-independent Borel covering of $2^ω$, while $λ_\mathbf{1}$ and $λ_\infty$ are the corresponding invariants of the graph $\mathbb{G}_1$ and the simple graph associated with the equivalence relation $E_0$.
Let $Γ$ be a countable group. A classical theorem of Thorisson states that if $X$ is a standard Borel $Γ$-space and $μ$ and $ν$ are Borel probability measures on $X$ which agree on every $Γ$-invariant subset, then $μ$ and $ν$ are equidecomposable, i.e. there are Borel measures $(μ_γ)_{γ\inΓ}$ on $X$ such that $μ= \sum_γμ_γ$ and $ν= \sum_γγμ_γ$. We establish a generalization of this result to cardinal algebras.
In $\mathsf{ZFC}$, if there is a measurable cardinal with infinitely many Woodin cardinals below it, then for every equivalence relation $E \in L(\mathbb{R})$ on $\mathbb{R}$ with all $\mathbfΔ_1^1$ classes and every $σ$-ideal $I$ on $\mathbb{R}$ so that the associated forcing $\mathbb{P}_I$ of $I^+$ $\mathbfΔ_1^1$ subsets is proper, there exists some $I^+$ $\mathbfΔ_1^1$ set $C$ so that $E \upharpoonright C$ is a $\mathbfΔ_1^1$ equivalence relation. In $\mathsf{ZF} + \mathsf{DC} + \mathsf{AD}_\mathbb{R} + V = L(\mathscr{P}(\mathbb{R}))$, for every equivalence relation $E$ on $\mathbb{R}$ with…
We introduce a natural generalization of Borel's Conjecture. For each infinite cardinal number $κ$, let {\sf BC}$_κ$ denote this generalization. Then ${\sf BC}_{\aleph_0}$ is equivalent to the classical Borel conjecture. Assuming the classical Borel conjecture, $\neg{\sf BC}_{\aleph_1}$ is equivalent to the existence of a Kurepa tree of height $\aleph_1$. Using the connection of ${\sf BC}_κ$ with a generalization of Kurepa's Hypothesis, we obtain the following consistency results: (1)If it is consistent that there is a 1-inaccessible cardinal then it is consistent that ${\sf BC}_{\aleph_1}$. (…
For a cardinal lambda<lambda_{omega_1} we give a ccc forcing notion P which forces that for some Borel subset B of the Cantor space (1) there a sequence (eta_alpha:alpha<lambda) of distinct elements such that |(eta_alpha+B) cap (eta_beta+B)|>5 for all alpha, beta<lambda, but (2) there is no perfect set of such eta's. The construction closely follows the one from Shelah math.LO/9802134
In [Sh893], Shelah proves that (on a stationary set of cardinals) an AEC has not too many models or every model has extensions of arbitrary cardinality. We show that, if we assume limited amalgamation, then the second condition holds for a larger class of cardinals.
A subset $X$ of a Polish group $G$ is \emph{Haar null} if there exists a Borel probability measure $μ$ and a Borel set $B$ containing $X$ such that $μ(gBh)=0$ for every $g,h \in G$. A set $X$ is \emph{Haar meager} if there exists a compact metric space $K$, a continuous function $f : K \to G$ and a Borel set $B$ containing $X$ such that $f^{-1}(gBh)$ is meager in $K$ for every $g,h \in G$. We calculate (in $ZFC$) the four cardinal invariants ($\rm add$, $\rm cov$, $\rm non$, $\rm cof$) of these two $σ$-ideals for the simplest non-locally compact Polish group, namely in the case $G = \mathbb{Z}…
In this work, we continue the tradition initiated by Geschke, 2011 of viewing the uncountable Borel chromatic number of analytic graphs as cardinal invariants of the continuum. We show that various uncountable Borel chromatic numbers of closed graphs can be consistently different, as well as consistently equal to the continuum. This is done using arguments that are typical to Axiom A forcing notions.
Given an analytic equivalence relation, we tend to wonder whether it is Borel. When it is non Borel, there is always the hope it will be Borel on a "large" set -- nonmeager or of positive measure. That has led Kanovei, Sabok and Zapletal to ask whether every proper $σ$ ideal satisfies the following property: given $E$ an analytic equivalence relation with Borel classes, there exists a set $B$ which is Borel and $I$-positive such that $E\restriction_{B}$ is Borel. We propose a related problem -- does every proper $σ$ ideal satisfy: given $A$ an analytic subset of the plane with Borel sections, …
We are interested in examples of a.e.c. with amalgamation having some (extreme) behaviour concerning types. Note we deal with k being sequence-local, i.e. local for increasing chains of length a regular cardinal (for types, equality of all restrictions imply equality). . For any cardinal theta>= aleph_0 we construct an a.e.c. with amalgamation k with L.S.T.(k) = theta, |tau_K| = theta such that {kappa : kappa is a regular cardinal and K is not (2^kappa, kappa)-sequence-local} is maximal. In fact we have a direct characterization of this class of cardinals: the regular kappa such that there is …
We show that it is consistent, relative to the consistency of a strongly inaccessible cardinal, that an instance of the generalized Borel Conjecture introduced in [8] holds while the classical Borel Conjecture fails.
In this work we study the uncountable Borel chromatic numbers, defined by Geschke (2011) as cardinal characteristics of the continuum, of low complexity graphs. We show that a strong form of locally countable graphs with compact totally disconnected set of vertices have Borel chromatic number bounded by the continuum of the ground model in the model obtained by adding $\aleph_2$ Laver reals. From this, we answer a question from Geschke and the second author (2022), and another question from Fisher, Friedman and Khomskii (2014) concerning regularity properties of subsets of the real line.
We introduce the notion of a `pure` Abstract Elementary Class to block trivial counterexamples. We study classes of models of bipartite graphs and show: Main Theorem (cf. Theorem 3.5.2 and Corollary 3.5.6): If $(λ_i : i \le α<\aleph_1)$ is a strictly increasing sequence of characterizable cardinals (Definition 2.1) whose models satisfy JEP$(<λ_0)$, there is an $L_{ω_1,ω}$ -sentence $ψ$ whose models form a pure AEC and (1) The models of $ψ$ satisfy JEP$(<λ_0)$, while JEP fails for all larger cardinals and AP fails in all infinite cardinals. (2) There exist $2^{λ_i^+}$ non-isomorphic maximal mod…
In this note we derive a property of maximal ideal-independent subsets of boolean algebras which has corollaries regarding the continuum cardinals p and s_mm(P(omega)/fin).
We study classes of Borel subsets of the real line $\mathbb{R}$ such as levels of the Borel hierarchy and the class of sets that are reducible to the set $\mathbb{Q}$ of rationals, endowed with the Wadge quasi-order of reducibility with respect to continuous functions on $\mathbb{R}$. Notably, we explore several structural properties of Borel subsets of $\mathbb{R}$ that diverge from those of Polish spaces with dimension zero. Our first main result is on the existence of embeddings of several posets into the restriction of this quasi-order to any Borel class that is strictly above the classes …
A family $\mathscr{I} \subseteq [ω]^ω$ such that for all finite $\{X_i\}_{i\in n}\subseteq \mathcal I$ and $A \in \mathscr{I} \setminus \{X_i\}_{i\in n}$, the set $A \setminus \bigcup_{i < n} X_i$ is infinite, is said to be ideal independent. An ideal independent family which is maximal under inclusion is said to be a maximal ideal independent family and the least cardinality of such family is denoted $\mathfrak{s}_{mm}$. We show that $\mathfrak{u}\leq\mathfrak{s}_{mm}$, which in particular establishes the independence of $\mathfrak{s}_{mm}$ and $\mathfrak{i}$. Given an arbitrary set $C$ of un…
We study uniqueness of limit models in abstract elementary classes (AECs) with no maximal models. We prove (assuming instances of diamonds) that categoricity in a cardinal of the form $μ^{+(n + 1)}$ implies the uniqueness of limit models of cardinality $μ^{+}, μ^{++}, \ldots, μ^{+n}$. This sheds light on a paper of Shelah and Villaveces, who were the first to consider uniqueness of limit models in this context. We also prove that (again assuming instances of diamonds) in an AEC with no maximal models, tameness (a locality property for types) together with categoricity in a proper class of card…
We investigate when a Borel graph admits a (Borel or measurable) orientation with outdegree bounded by $k$ for various cardinals $k$. We show that for a p.m.p. graph $G$, a measurable orientation can be found when $k$ is larger than the normalized cost of the restriction of $G$ to any positive measure subset. Using an idea of Conley and Tamuz, we can also find Borel orientations of graphs with subexponential growth; however, for every $k$ we also find graphs which admit measurable orientations with outdegree bounded by $k$ but no such Borel orientations. Finally, for special values of $k$ we b…
Theorem: There is a {\em complete sentence} $ϕ$ of $L_{ω_1,ω}$ such that $ϕ$ has maximal models in a set of cardinals $λ$ that is cofinal in the first measurable $μ$ while $ϕ$ has no maximal models in any $χ\geq μ$.
This is the Ph.D. thesis of the author, which was written under the supervision of Michael Hrušák at UNAM. The main contributions of this thesis are the following: There is a $+$-Ramsey \textsf{MAD} family. This answers an old question of Michael Hrušák. There are no $P$-points in the Silver model, answering a question of Michael Hrušák (this is joint work with David Chodounský. Let $\mathfrak{i}$ denote the minimal cardinality of a maximal independent family and let $\mathfrak{a}_T$ denote the minimal cardinality of a maximal family of pairwise almost disjoint subtrees of $2^{<ω}$. Using a countable support iteration of proper, $^ωω$-bounding posets of length $ω_2$ over a model of CH, we show that consistently $\mathfrak{i}<\mathfrak{a}_T$. Moreover, we show that the inequality can be witnessed by a co-analytic maximal independent family of size $\aleph_1$ in the presence of a $Δ^1_3$ definable well-order of the reals. The main result of the paper can be viewed as a …
