Let $Γ$ be a countable group. A classical theorem of Thorisson states that if $X$ is a standard Borel $Γ$-space and $μ$ and $ν$ are Borel probability measures on $X$ which agree on every $Γ$-invariant subset, then $μ$ and $ν$ are equidecomposable, i.e. there are Borel measures $(μ_γ)_{γ\inΓ}$ on $X$ such that $μ= \sum_γμ_γ$ and $ν= \sum_γγμ_γ$. We establish a generalization of this result to cardinal algebras.
The present status of the problems in my book "Cardinal Invariants on Boolean algebras" (Birkhauser 1996) is described, with a description of solutions or partial solutions, and references.
We deal with some of problems posed by Monk and related to cardinal invariant of ultraproducts of Boolean algebras. We also introduce and investigate some new cardinal invariants.
An interval algebra is a Boolean algebra which is isomorphic to the algebra of finite unions of half-open intervals, of a linearly ordered set. An interval algebra is hereditary if every subalgebra is an interval algebra. We answer a question of M. Bekkali and S. Todorčević, by showing that it is consistent that every $σ$-centered interval algebra of size $\mathfrak{b}$ is hereditary. We also show that there is, in ZFC, an hereditary interval algebra of cardinality $\aleph_1.$
We construct Boolean Algebras answering questions of Monk on cardinal invariants. The results are proved in ZFC (rather than giving consistency results). We deal with the existence of superatomic Boolean Algebras with ``few automorphisms'', with entangled sequences of linear orders, and with semi-ZFC examples of the non-attainment of the spread (and hL, hd).
Using Koszmider's strongly unbounded functions, we show the following consistency result: Suppose that $κ,λ$ are infinite cardinals such that $κ^{+++} \leq λ$, $κ^{<κ}=κ$ and $2^κ= κ^+$, and $η$ is an ordinal with $κ^+\leq η<κ^{++}$ and $cf(η) = κ^+$. Then, in some cardinal-preserving generic extension there is a superatomic Boolean algebra $B$ such that - $ht(B) = η+ 1$, - the cardinality of the $α$th level of $B$ is $κ$ for every $α<η$, - and the cardinality of the $η$th level of $B$ is $λ$ Especially, $\<ω\>_{ω_1}\concatenation \<ω_3\>$ and $\<ω_1\>_{ω_2}\concatenation \<ω_4\>$ can be cardi…
Let C denote any of the following cardinal characteristics of Boolean algebras: incomparability, spread, character, pi-character, hereditary Lindelof number, hereditary density. It is shown to be consistent that there exists a sequence <B_i:i<kappa> of Boolean algebras and an ultrafilter D on kappa such that C(prod_{i<kappa}B_i/D)<|prod_{i<kappa}C(B_i)/D|. This answers a number of problems posed by Monk.
We prove that for every singular cardinal mu of cofinality omega, the complete Boolean algebra compP_mu(mu) contains as a complete subalgebra an isomorphic copy of the collapse algebra Comp Col(omega_1,mu^{aleph_0}). Consequently, adding a generic filter to the quotient algebra P_mu(mu)=P(mu)/[mu]^{<mu} collapses mu^{aleph_0} to aleph_1. Another corollary is that the Baire number of the space U(mu) of all uniform ultrafilters over mu is equal to omega_2. The corollaries affirm two conjectures by Balcar and Simon. The proof uses pcf theory.
We introduce a large cardinal property which is consistent with L and show that for every superatomic Boolean algebra B and every cardinal lambda with the large cardinal property, if tightness^+(B) >= lambda^+, then depth (B) >= lambda. This improves a theorem of Dow and Monk.
We investigate states on von Neumann algebras which are not normal but enjoy various forms of infinite additivity, and show that these exist on $B(H)$ if and only if the cardinality of an orthonormal basis of $H$ satisfies various large cardinal conditions. For instance, there is a singular countably additive pure state on $B(l^2(κ))$ if and only if $κ$ is Ulam measurable, and there is a singular ${<}\,κ$-additive pure state on $B(l^2(κ))$ if and only if $κ$ is measurable. The proofs make use of Farah and Weaver's theory of quantum filters. Applications to Ueda's peak set theorem for von Neuma…
We give a definition of some classes of boolean algebras generalizing free boolean algebras; they satisfy a universal property that certain functions extend to homomorphisms. We give a combinatorial property of generating sets of these algebras, which we call n -independent. The properties of these classes (n-free and omega-free boolean algebras) are investigated. These include connections to hypergraph theory and cardinal invariants on these algebras. Related cardinal functions, n Ind, which is the supremum of the cardinalities of n-independent subsets; i_n, the minimum size of a maximal n -i…
The notion of commutation of operations in universal algebra leads to the concept of centralizer clone and gives rise to a well-known class of problems that we call centralizer problems, in which one seeks to determine whether a given set of operations arises as a centralizer or, equivalently, coincides with its own double centralizer. Centralizer clones and centralizer problems in universal algebra have been studied by several authors, with early contributions by Cohn, Kuznecov, Danil'čenko, and Harnau. In this paper, we work within a generalized setting of infinitary universal algebra relati…
For every uncountable cardinal $κ$ there are $2^κ$ nonisomorphic simple AF algebras of density character $κ$ and $2^κ$ nonisomorphic hyperfinite II$_1$ factors of density character $κ$. These estimates are maximal possible. All C*-algebras that we construct have the same Elliott invariant and Cuntz semigroup as the CAR algebra.
We prove that on many inaccessible there is a Jonsson algebra, so e.g. the first regular Jonsson cardinal lambda which is lambda x omega-Mahlo. We give further restrictions on successor of singulars which are Jonsson cardinals. E.g. there is a Jonsson algebra on the successor of beth_omega. Lastly, we give further information on guessing of clubs.
Boolean ultrapowers extend the classical ultrapower construction to work with ultrafilters on any complete Boolean algebra, rather than only on a power set algebra. When they are well-founded, the associated Boolean ultrapower embeddings exhibit a large cardinal nature, and the Boolean ultrapower construction thereby unifies two central themes of set theory---forcing and large cardinals---by revealing them to be two facets of a single underlying construction, the Boolean ultrapower.
Let inv denote the cardinal invariants Depth^+ and Length^+ on Boolean algebras. For many singular cardinals we create a strict inequality between the product of the inv values and the inv of the product algebra. The proof holds in ZFC.
Extending a result of the first author and Katsura, we prove that for every UHF algebra $A$ of infinite type, in every uncountable cardinality $κ$ there are $2^κ$ nonisomorphic approximately matricial C*-algebras with the same $K_0$ group as $A$. These algebras are group \cstar-algebras `twisted' by prescribed canonical commutation relations (CCR), and they can also be considered as nonseparable generalizations of noncommutative tori.
We address several questions of Donald Monk related to irredundance and spread of Boolean algebras, gaining both some ZFC knowledge and consistency results. We show in ZFC that irr(B_0 times B_1)= max(irr(B_0),irr(B_1)). We prove consistency of the statement ``there is a Boolean algebra B such that irr(B)<s(B otimes B)'' and we force a superatomic Boolean algebra B_* such that s(B_*)=inc(B_*)=kappa, irr(B_*)=Id(B_*)=kappa^+ and Sub(B_*)=2^(kappa^+). Next we force a superatomic algebra B_0 such that irr(B_0)<inc(B_0) and a superatomic algebra B_1 such that t(B_1)>Aut(B_1). Finally we show that …
Let P be the direct product of countably many copies of the additive group Z of integers. We study, from a set-theoretic point of view, those subgroups of P for which all homomorphisms to Z annihilate all but finitely many of the standard unit vectors. Specifically, we relate the smallest possible size of such a subgroup to several of the standard cardinal characteristics of the continuum. We also study some related properties and cardinals, both group-theoretic and set-theoretic. One of the set-theoretic properties and the associated cardinal are combinatorially natural, independently of any …
We prove that assuming suitable cardinal arithmetic, if B is a Boolean algebra every homomorphic image of which is isomorphic to a factor, then B has locally small density. We also prove that for an (infinite) Boolean algebra B, the number of subalgebras is not smaller than the number of endomorphisms, and other related inequalities. Lastly we deal with the obtainment of the supremum of the cardinalities of sets of pairwise incomparable elements of a Boolean algebra.
If $A$ is an infinite Boolean algebra the cardinal invariant $\mathfrak{a}(A)$ is defined as the smallest size of an infinite partition of $A$. The cardinal $\mathfrak{a}(A\oplus B)$, where $A\oplus B$ is the free product of the Boolean algebras $A$ and $B$ (whose dual topological space is the product of the dual topological spaces of $A$ and $B$), is below both $\mathfrak{a}(A)$ and $\mathfrak{a}(B)$. The equality $\mathfrak{a}(A\oplus B)=\min\lbrace\mathfrak{a}(A),\mathfrak{a}(B)\rbrace$ is not known to hold for all infinite Boolean algebras $A$ and $B$. Here some lower bounds of $\mathfrak{…
The structure of quotient Boolean algebras in terms of cardinal invariants is investigated. Some results of Gitik and Shelah regarding atomless ideals are reproved and proofs are significantly simplified.
For I a proper, countably complete ideal on P(X) for some set X, can the quotient Boolean algebra P(X)/I be complete? This question was raised by Sikorski in 1949. By a simple projection argument as for measurable cardinals, it can be assumed that X is an uncountable cardinal kappa, and that I is a kappa-complete ideal on P(kappa) containing all singletons. In this paper we provide consequences from and consistency results about completeness.
In this paper, we continue the study of a left-distributive algebra of elementary embeddings from the collection of sets of rank less than lambda to itself, as well as related finite left-distributive algebras (which can be defined without reference to large cardinals). In particular, we look at the critical points (least ordinals moved) of the elementary embeddings; simple statements about these ordinals can be reformulated as purely algebraic statements concerning the left distributive law. Previously, lower bounds on the number of critical points have been used to show that certain such alg…
We give a simplified proof of a theorem of M. Rabus and S. Shelah claiming that for each cardinal mu there is a c.c.c Boolean algebra with topological density mu.
Suppose B is the unital algebra consisting of the algebraic product of full matrix algebras over an index set X. A bijection is set up between the equivalence classes of irreducible representations of B as operators on a Banach space and the sigma-complete ultrafilters on X, Theorem 1. Therefore, if X has less than measurable cardinality (e.g. accessible), the equivalence classes of the irreducible representations of B are labeled by points of X, and all representations of B are described, Theorem 3.
The main result is Theorem: Let A be an R-algebra, mu, lambda be cardinals such that |A|<=mu=mu^{aleph_0}<lambda<=2^mu. If A is aleph_0-cotorsion-free or A is countably free, respectively, then there exists an aleph_0-cotorsion-free or a separable (reduced, torsion-free) R-module G respectively of cardinality |G|=lambda with End_RG=A oplus Fin G.
We consider algebras with one binary operation $\cdot$ and one generator ({\it monogenic}) and satisfying the left distributive law $a\cdot (b\cdot c)=(a\cdot b)\cdot (a\cdot c)$. One can define a sequence of finite left-distributive algebras $A_n$, and then take a limit to get an infinite monogenic left-distributive algebra~$A_\infty$. Results of Laver and Steel assuming a strong large cardinal axiom imply that $A_\infty$ is free; it is open whether the freeness of $A_\infty$ can be proved without the large cardinal assumption, or even in Peano arithmetic. The main result of this paper is the…
Foreman proved the Duality Theorem, which gives an algebraic characterization of certain ideal quotients in generic extensions. As an application he proved that generic supercompactness of $ω_1$ is preserved by any proper forcing. We generalize portions of Foreman's Duality Theorem to the context of generic extender embeddings and ideal extenders (as introduced by Claverie in his PhD Thesis, Universitat Munster, 2010). As an application we prove that if $ω_1$ is generically strong, then it remains so after adding any number of Cohen subsets of $ω_1$; however many other $ω_1$-closed posets---su…
Complete Boolean algebras proved to be an important tool in topology and set theory. Two of the most prominent examples are B(kappa), the algebra of Borel sets modulo measure zero ideal in the generalized Cantor space {0,1}^kappa equipped with product measure, and C(kappa), the algebra of regular open sets in the space {0,1}^kappa, for kappa an infinite cardinal. C(kappa) is much easier to analyse than B(kappa) : C(kappa) has a dense subset of size kappa, while the density of B(kappa) depends on the cardinal characteristics of the real line; and the definition of C(kappa) is simpler. Indeed, C…
Techniques of combinatorial set theory are applied to the following algebraic problem. Suppose G is an abelian group such that, for all countable subgroups C, the divisible part of the quotient G/C is countable. What can one conclude about the size of the divisible part of G/K when the cardinality of the subgroup K is a given uncountable cardinal?
Using a theorem from pcf theory, we show that for any singular cardinal nu, the product of the Cohen forcing notions on kappa, kappa < nu adds a generic for the Cohen forcing notion on nu^+. This solves Problem 5.1 in Miller's list (attributed to Rene David and Sy Friedman).
We investigate reflection-type problems on the class SPM, of Boolean algebras carrying strictly positive finitely additive measures. We show, in particular, that in the constructible universe there is a Boolean algebra $\mathfrak A$ which is not in SPM but every subalgebra of $\mathfrak A$ of cardinality $\mathfrak c$ admits a strictly positive measure. This result is essentially due to Farah and Velickovic.
We answer three problems by J. D. Monk on cardinal invariants of Boolean algebras. Two of these are whether taking the algebraic density pi(A), resp. the topological density d(A), of a Boolean algebra A commutes with formation of ultraproducts; the third one compares the number of endomorphisms and of ideals of a Boolean algebra.
We give a unified treatment of the model theory of various enrichments of infinite atomic Boolean algebras, with special attention to quantifier-eliminations, complete axiomatizations and decidability. A classical example is the enrichment by a predicate for the ideal of finite sets, and a novel one involves predicates giving congruence conditions on the cardinality of finite sets. We focus on three examples, and classify them by expressive power.
Let $\mathbb{B}$ be a complete Boolean algebra. We show, as an application of a previous result of the author, that if $λ$ is an infinite cardinal and $\mathbb{B}$ is weakly $(λ^ω, ω)$-distributive, then $\mathbb{B}$ is $(λ, 2)$-distributive. Using a parallel result, we show that if $κ$ is a weakly compact cardinal such that $\mathbb{B}$ is weakly $(2^κ, κ)$-distributive and $\mathbb{B}$ is $(α, 2)$-distributive for each $α< κ$, then $\mathbb{B}$ is $(κ, 2)$-distributive.
We describe representation theorems for local and perfect MV-algebras in terms of ultraproducts involving the unit interval [0,1]. Furthermore, we give a representation of local Abelian lattice-ordered groups with strong unit as quasi-constant functions on an ultraproduct of the reals. All the above theorems are proved to have a uniform version, depending only on the cardinality of the algebra to be embedded, as well as a definable construction in ZFC. The paper contains both known and new results and provides a complete overview of representation theorems for such classes.
Let ϕbe a first order formula and M be a countable model. ϕ^M denotes the set of all assignments that satisfy ϕin M. Let M, N be countable models. A formula ϕdistinguishes these models if |ϕ^M|\neq |ϕ^N|. We show that the number of distinguishable countable models for a complete countable first order theory, satisfies the Glimm Effross dichotomy, hence also Vaught's conjecture. The proof in the presence of equality is fairly easy, though we need infinite conjunctions to implement it and somewhat heavy theorems from descriptive set theory. However, the case without equality seems to be much mor…
Under the assumption that the continuum c is a regular cardinal, we prove the existence and uniqueness of a Boolean algebra B of size c defined by sharing the main structural properties that P(N)/fin has under CH and in the aleph2-Cohen model. We prove a similar result in the category of Banach spaces.
