In the context of LLM geometries, we show that superpositions of classical coherent states of trivial topology can give rise to new classical limits where the topology of spacetime has changed. We argue that this phenomenon implies that neither the topology nor the geometry of spacetime can be the result of an operator measurement. We address how to reconcile these statements with the usual semiclassical analysis of low energy effective field theory for gravity.
The topological classification of critical points of black holes in 4D Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity coupled to Born-Infeld theory is investigated. Considered independently, Born-infeld corrections to the Einstein action alter the topological charge of critical points of the charged AdS black hole system, whereas the Gauss-Bonnet corrections do not. For the combined system though, the total topological charge of the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory is unaltered in the presence of Born-Infeld coupling.
We propose a definition for the Lorentzian Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity path integral that includes Lorentzian topology changing configurations. The construction is inspired by the bosonic string genus expansion on singular Lorentzian worldsheets, with geometries known as lightcone diagrams playing a prominent role. The Lorentzian path integral is defined through a suitable analytic continuation of the Euclidean path integral, and includes metrics that become degenerate at isolated points allowing for Lorentzian topology changing transitions. We discuss the relation between Euclidean JT ampl…
Thermodynamics of black holes in anti de Sitter (AdS) spacetimes typically contains critical points in the phase diagram, some of which correspond to the first order transition ending in a second order one. Following the recent proposal in [arXiv:2112.01706] on using Duan's $ϕ$-mapping theory, we classify the critical points of six dimensional charged Gauss-Bonnet black holes in AdS spacetime. We find that the higher derivative corrections from Gauss-Bonnet gravity do not change the topological class of critical points in charged black holes in AdS, unlike the case of Born-Infeld corrections n…
With in the extended thermodynamics, we study the efficiency $η_k$ of critical heat engines for charged black holes in massive gravity for spherical ($k=1$), flat ($k=0$) and hyperbolic ($k=-1$) topologies. Although, $η_k$ is in general higher (lower) for hyperbolic (spherical) topology, we show that this order can be reversed in critical heat engines with efficiency higher for spherical topology, following in particular the order: $ η_{\rm -1}^{\phantom{-1}} < η_{\rm 0}^{\phantom{0}} < η_{\rm +1}^{\phantom{+1}}$. Furthermore, the study of the near horizon region of the critical hole shows tha…
Causal Dynamical Triangulations (CDT) is a non-perturbative lattice approach to quantum gravity where one assumes space-time foliation into spatial hyper-surfaces of fixed topology. Most of the CDT results were obtained for the spatial topology of the 3-sphere. It was shown that CDT has rich phase structure, including the semiclassical phase consistent with Einstein's general relativity. Some of the phase transitions were found to be second (or higher) order which makes a possibility of taking continuum limit viable. Here we present new results of changing the spatial topology to that of the 3…
The Kerr-Schild double copy relates exact solutions of gauge and gravity theories. In all previous examples, the gravity solution is associated with an abelian-like gauge theory object, which linearises the Yang-Mills equations. This appears to be at odds with the double copy for scattering amplitudes, in which the non-abelian nature of the gauge theory plays a crucial role. Furthermore, it is not yet clear whether or not global properties of classical fields - such as non-trivial topology - can be matched between gauge and gravity theories. In this paper, we clarify these issues by explicitly…
Using the new normalized thermodynamic scalar curvature, we investigate the microstructures and phase transitions of black holes in massive gravity for horizons of various topologies. We find that the graviton mass enhances the repulsive interactions of small black holes and weakens the attractive interactions of large black holes, with possiblity of new repulsive regions for microstructures in phase space. In addition, the repulsive interactions of small black hole are strong for spherical topology, followed by flat and hyperbolic topology; while, the attractive interactions of large black ho…
Taking the quantization of electromagnetism as the paradigm, we show how this procedure cannot work for Einstein gravity. However, it does work for conformal gravity, a fourth-order derivative, renormalizable theory of gravity that Bender and Mannheim have shown to be ghost free. We show that in any gravity theory gravity cannot be quantized canonically. Rather, because of an interplay between the zero-point energy of gravity and that of its matter source, gravity is quantized purely by its coupling to a quantized matter source, with gravity being intrinsically quantum mechanical. Treating the…
CDT is an attempt to formulate a non-perturbative lattice theory of quantum gravity. We describe the phase diagram and analyse the phase transition between phase B and phase C (which is the analogue of the de Sitter phase observed for the spherical spatial topology). This transition is accessible to ordinary Monte Carlo simulations when the topology of space is toroidal. We find that the transition is most likely first order, but with unusual properties. The end points of the transition line are candidates for second order phase transition points where an UV continuum limit might exist.
We compute a momentum space version of the entanglement spectrum and entanglement entropy of general Young tableau states, and one-point functions on Young tableau states. These physical quantities are used to measure the topology of the dual spacetime geometries in the context of gauge/gravity correspondence. The idea that Young tableau states can be obtained by superposing coherent states is explicitly verified. In this quantum superposition, a topologically distinct geometry is produced by superposing states dual to geometries with a trivial topology. Furthermore we have a refined bound for…

Recently, Kenna-Allison et.al. claimed that bimetric gravity cannot give rise to a viable cosmological expansion history while at the same time being compatible with local gravity tests. In this note we review that claim and combine various results from the literature to provide several simple counter examples. We conclude that the results of Kenna-Allison et.al. cannot hold in general.
We explore a scenario of the general relativity determined by the framework of the rainbow gravity with the purpose of searching for analogues of the Aharonov-Bohm effect. By focusing on the confinement of the Dirac field and the scalar field to a hard-wall confining potential in a modified background of the cosmic string spacetime, we examine the effects of the rainbow gravity and the topology of the cosmic string spacetime. Then, we compare each spectrum of energy with the cases where the rainbow gravity is absent.
