In this paper we explore the different mechanisms that affect the thermopower of a band insulating perovskite (in this case, SrTiO$_3$) when subject to strain (both compressive or tensile). We analyze the high temperature, entropy dominated limit and the lower temperature, energy-transport regime. We observe that the effect of strain in the high-temperature Seebeck coefficient is small at the concentration levels of interest for thermoelectric applications. However, the effective mass changes substantially with strain, which produces an opposite effect to that of the degeneracy-breakups produced by strain. In particular, we find that the thermopower can be enhanced by applying tensile strain in the adequate regime. We conclude that the detrimental effect of strain in thermopower due to band splitting is a minor effect that will not hamper the optimization of the thermoelectric properties of oxides with t$_{2g}$-active bands by applying strain.
Using advanced ab-initio calculations, we describe the formation and confinement of a two-dimensional electron gas in short-period ($\simeq$4 nm) Nb-doped SrTiO$_3$ superlattices as function of Nb doping. We predict complete two-dimensional confinement for doping concentrations higher than 70%. In agreement with previous observations, we find a large thermopower enhancement at room temperature. However, this effect is primarily determined by dilution of the mobile charge over a multitude of weakly occupied bands. As a general rule, we conclude that thermopower in similar heterostructures will …
We show herein fabrication and field-modulated thermopower for KTaO3 single-crystal based field-effect transistors (FETs). The KTaO3 FET exhibits field effect mobility of ~8 cm2/Vs, which is ~4 times larger than that of SrTiO3 FETs. The thermopower of the KTaO3 FET decreased from 600 to 220 microV/K by the application of gate electric field up to 1.5 MV/cm, ~400 microV/K below that of an SrTiO3 FET, clearly reflecting the smaller carrier effective mass of KTaO3.
Valley lines on total-energy surfaces for the zone-center distortions of free-standing and in-plane strained SrTiO3 are investigated with a newly developed first-principles structure optimization technique [Jpn. J. Appl. Phys. vol.43 (2004), p.6785]. The results of numerical calculations confirmed that the ferroelectricity is induced, and the Curie temperature is increased, by applying biaxial compressive or tensile strains. Along the distortion, strong nonlinear coupling between the soft- and hard-modes is demonstrated.
Here we investigate LaAlO_3-SrTiO_3 heterostructure withδ-doping of the interface by LaMnO_3 at less than one monolayer. This doping strongly inhibits the formation of mobile electron layer at the interface. This results in giant increase of the resistance and the thermopower of the heterostructure. Several aspects of this phenomena are investigated. A model to calculate the carrier concentration is presented and effect of doping and detailed temperature dependence is analyzed in terms of model parameters and the weak-scattering theory. The large enhancement of thermopower is attributed to the…
We study the origin of the large thermopower in quasi-two-dimensional a $τ$-type organic conductor, $τ-(EDO-S,S-DMEDT-TTF)_2(AuBr_2)_{1+y}$ ($y \le 0.875$), from the view point of a "pudding mold"-type band structure. We calculate the electronic band structure using an \textit{ab initio} band calculation package, and obtain a tight binding model fit to the \textit{ab initio} band structure. Using the model and the Boltzmann's equation approach, we calculate the temperature dependence of the Seebeck coefficient. We conclude that the peculiar band structure is the origin of the large Seebeck coe…
Employing ab-initio electronic structure calculations combined with the non-equilibrium Green's function technique, we study the dependence of the thermopower Q on the conformation in biphenyl-based single-molecule junctions. For the series of experimentally available biphenyl molecules, alkyl side chains allow us to gradually adjust the torsion angle ϕ between the two phenyl rings from 0 to 90° and to control in this way the degree of π-electron conjugation. Studying different anchoring groups and binding positions, our theory predicts that the absolute values of the thermopower decrease slig…
The experimental unexpected large Seebeck coefficient in SrTiO3 (STO) cannot be reproduced theoretically by the conventional Bloch-Boltzmann transport with electron-phonon coupling calculated perturbatively, indicating a failure of Fermi liquid picture in STO and ill-treatment of polaronic states. Starting from many-body interaction picture, the polaronic states can be precisely described by the method of cumulant expansion of retarded Green's function. By applying Kubo-Greenwood method, we found that the mysterious Seebeck coefficient can be fully described by a combination of polarons and Fe…
We predict high thermoelectric efficiency in the layered perovskite La$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, based on calculations (mostly ab-initio) of the electronic structure, transport coefficients, and thermal conductivity in a wide temperature range. The figure of merit $ZT$ computed with a temperature-dependent relaxation time increases monotonically from just above 1 at room temperature to over 2.5 at 1200 K, at an optimal carrier density of around 10$^{20}$ cm$^{-3}$. The Seebeck thermopower coefficient is between 200 and 300 $μ$V/K at optimal doping, but can reach nearly 1 mV/K at low doping. Much of the …
SrTiO$_3$ is a promising $n$-type oxide semiconductor for thermoelectric energy conversion. Epitaxial thin films of SrTiO$_3$ doped with both La and oxygen vacancies have been synthesized by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). The thermoelectric and galvanomagnetic properties of these films have been characterized at temperatures ranging from 300 K to 900 K and are typical of a doped semiconductor. Thermopower values of double-doped films are comparable to previous studies of La doped single crystals at similar carrier concentrations. The highest thermoelectric figure of merit ($ZT$) was measured t…
The Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) homologous series Sr$_{n+1}$Ti$_{n}$O$_{3n+1}$ provides a useful template for the study and control of the effects of dimensionality and quantum confinement on the excited state properties of the complex oxide SrTiO$_3$. We use ab initio many-body perturbation theory within the $GW$ approximation and the Bethe-Salpeter equation approach to calculate quasiparticle energies and absorption spectrum of Sr$_{n+1}$Ti$_{n}$O$_{3n+1}$ for $n=1-5$ and $\infty$. Our computed direct and indirect optical gaps are in excellent agreement with spectroscopic measurements. The calcul…
Measurements of magneto-thermopower (S(H, T)) of interfacial delta doped LaTiO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ (LTO/STO) heterostructure by an iso-structural antiferromagnetic perovskite LaCrO$_3$ are reported. The thermoelectric power of the pure LTO/STO interface at 300 K is $\approx$ 118 $μ$V/K, but increases dramatically on $δ$-doping. The observed linear temperature dependence of S(T) over the temperature range 100 K to 300 K is in agreement with the theory of diffusion thermopower of a two-dimensional electron gas. The S(T) displays a distinct enhancement in the temperature range (T $<$ 100 K) where the s…
Two-dimensionally confined electrons showing unusually large thermopower (S) have attracted attention as a potential approach for developing high performance thermoelectric materials. However, enhanced S has never been observed in electric field induced two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG). Here we demonstrate electric field modulation of S for a field effect transistor (FET) fabricated on a SrTiO3 crystal using a water-infiltrated nanoporous glass as the gate insulator. An electric field application confined carrier electrons up to ~2E15 /cm^2 in an extremely thin (~2 nm) 2DEG. Unusually large…
We present a strategy for increasing thermoelectric performance by invoking ferroelectric distortion in a transition-metal oxide. By using an ab initio calculation approach with the Boltzmann transport equation, a large Seebeck coefficient is calculated in n-type BaTiO3. The polar structural distortion causes the peculiar dispersion of the lowest conduction band, which enhances the Seebeck coefficient along the polar direction. A microscopic mechanism of carrier concentration dependence of the Seebeck coefficient is discussed in terms of the band velocity distribution in the Brillouin zone.
We study the origin of the large Seebeck coefficient despite the metallic conductivity in the La-doped SrTiO$_3$ and Ba-doped KTaO$_3$. We calculate the band structure of SrTiO$_3$ and KTaO$_3$, from which the Seebeck coefficient is obtained using the Boltzmann's equation. We conclude that the multiplicity of the $t_{2g}$ bands in these materials is one major origin of the good thermoelectric property in that when compared at a fixed total number of doped electrons, the Seebeck coefficient and thus the power factor are larger in multiple band systems than in single band ones because the number…
We present a combined treatment of the non-equilibrium dynamics and transport of electrons and phonons by carrying out \textit{ab initio} calculations of the fully coupled electron and phonon Boltzmann transport equations. We find that the presence of mutual drag between the two carriers causes the thermopower to be enhanced and dominated by the transport of phonons, rather than electrons as in the traditional semiconductor picture. Drag also strongly boosts the intrinsic electron mobility, thermal conductivity and the Lorenz number. Impurity scattering is seen to suppress the drag-enhancement…
Diamond is one of the most studied materials because of its unique combination of remarkable electrical, mechanical, thermal and optical properties. Using a fully self-consistent ab initio theory of coupled electron-phonon transport, we reveal another striking behavior: a huge drag enhancement of the thermopower of lightly doped diamond. Thermopower values of around 100,000 microvolts per Kelvin are found at 100 K, significantly exceeding the highest previously measured value in the correlated metal FeSb2, and occurring at much higher temperatures. The enormous thermopower in diamond arises pr…
Band structure, Fermi surface, and phonon dispersions of noncentrosymmetric B20-type RhGe are calculated ab initio for the first time and their evolution with increasing pressure is investigated. We consider in detail symmetry-conditioned features of the band structure, as well as pressure-induced changes in the Fermi surface topology, which are expected to affect the thermopower of RhGe. We also report on special calculations of electric field gradients on the Rh and Ge nuclei and compare these results with a very recent 111 Cd-TDPAC study of B20-RhGe.
By means of ab initio calculations, we study the effect of charge transfer and symmetry mismatch on the magnetic and electronic properties of CaMnO$_3$ ultrathin films, epitaxially grown on SrTiO$_3$ (001). We find that the interplay of these degrees of freedom, together with the low dimensionality and the strain imposed by the substrate, changes the bulk occupancy of the Mn e_$g$ orbitals, which determines the magnetic configuration of the ultrathin CMO films. A transition from an insulating G-type to a metallic A-type antiferromagnetic configuration is stabilized.
We demonstrate how the quantum paraelectric ground state of SrTiO$_3$ can be accessed via a microscopic $ab~initio$ approach based on density functional theory. At low temperature the quantum fluctuations are strong enough to stabilize the paraelectric phase even though a classical description would predict a ferroelectric phase. We find that accounting for quantum fluctuations of the lattice and for the strong coupling between the ferroelectric soft mode and lattice elongation is necessary to achieve quantitative agreement with experimental frequency of the ferroelectric soft mode. The temper…
We use density-functional theory with the local-density approximation to study the structural and ferroelectric properties of SrTiO$_3$ under misfit strains. Both the antiferrodistortive (AFD) and ferroelectric (FE) instabilities are considered. The rotation of the oxygen octahedra and the movement of the atoms are fully relaxed within the constraint of a fixed in-plane lattice constant. We find a rich misfit strain-induced phase transition sequence and is obtained only when the AFD distortion is taken into account. We also find that compressive misfit strains induce ferroelectricity in the te…
Epitaxially grown SrTiO$_{3}$ (STO) thin films are material enablers for a number of critical energy-conversion and information-storage technologies like electrochemical electrode coatings, solid oxide fuel cells and random access memories. Oxygen vacancies (${\rm V_{O}}$), on the other hand, are key defects to understand and tailor many of the unique functionalities realized in oxide perovskite thin films. Here, we present a comprehensive and technically sound ab initio description of ${\rm V_{O}}$ in epitaxially strained (001) STO thin films. The novelty of our first-principles study lies in…
Comment on 2501.17230 and 2502.00103 "Phonon-mediated electron attraction in SrTiO3 via the generalized Frohlich and deformation potential mechanisms" and "Theory of ab initio downfolding with arbitrary range electron-phonon coupling"
We report thermoelectric power experiments in e-doped thin films of SrTiO$_3$ (STO) which demonstrate that the electronic band degeneracy can be lifted through defect management during growth. We show that even small amounts of cationic vacancies, combined with epitaxial stress, produce a homogeneous tetragonal distortion of the films, resulting in a Kondo-like resistance upturn at low temperature, large anisotropic magnetoresistance, and non-linear Hall effect. Ab-initio calculations confirm a different occupation of each band depending on the degree of tetragonal distortion. The phenomenolog…
Thermoelectric properties of the system La$_2$NiO$_{4+δ}$ have been studied ab initio. Large Seebeck coefficient values are predicted for the parent compound, and to some extent remain in the hole-doped metallic phase, accompanied of an increase in the conductivity. This system, due to its layered structure would be a suitable candidate for an improvement of its thermoelectric figure of merit by nanostructurization in thin films, that has already been shown to increase the electrical conductivity ($σ$). Our calculations show that in the region around La$_2$NiO$_{4.05}$ the system has a large t…
Thermoelectric properties of the system La$_2$NiO$_{4+δ}$ have been recently discussed [Phys. Rev. B 86, 165114 (2012)] via ab initio calculations. An optimum hole-doping value was obtained with reasonable thermopower and thermoelectric figure of merit being calculated. Here, a large increase in the thermoelectric performance through lattice strain and the corresponding atomic relaxations is predicted. This increase would be experimentally attainable via growth in thin films of the material on top of different substrates. A small tensile strain would produce large thermoelectric figures of mer…
We report an ab-initio study of the stability and electronic properties of transition metal silicides in order to study their potential for high temperature thermoelectric applications. We focus on the family M5Si3 (M = Ta, W) which is stable up to about 2000 °C. We first investigate the structural stability of the two compounds and then determine the thermopower of the equilibrium structure using the electronic density of states and Mott's law. We find that W5Si3 has a relatively large thermopower but probably not sufficient enough for thermoelectric applications.
Titanium dioxide has been extensively studied in recent decades for its important photocatalytic application in environmental purification. The search for a method to narrow the optical band-gap of TiO2 plays a key role for enhancing its photocatalytic application. The optical band gap of epitaxial rutile and anatase TiO2 thin films deposited by helicon magnetron sputtering on sapphire and on SrTiO3 substrates was correlated to the lattice constants estimated from HRTEM images and SAED. The optical band-gap of 3.03 eV for bulk-rutile increased for the thin films to 3.37 on sapphire. The band g…
We present a fully ab initio based scheme to compute transport properties, i.e. the electrical conductivity σ and thermopower S, in the presence of electron-phonon interaction. Therefore, we explicitly investigate the k-dependent structure of the Eliashberg spectral function , the coupling strength, the linewidth and the relaxation time τ. We obtain a state-dependent τ and show its necessity to reproduce the increased thermopower at temperatures below the Debye temperature, without accounting for the phonon-drag effect. Despite the detailed investigations of various k and q dependencies, the p…
The two-dimensional electron gas found at the surface of SrTiO$_3$ and related interfaces has attracted significant attention as a promising basis for oxide electronics. In order to utilize its full potential, the response of this 2DEG to structural changes and surface modification must be understood in detail. Here, we present a study of the detailed electronic structure evolution of the 2DEG as a function of sample temperature and surface step density. By comparing our experimental results with \textit{ab initio} calculations, we found that a SrO-rich surface layer is a prerequisite for elec…
The replacement of SiO2 by so-called high-k oxides is one of the major challenges for the semiconductor industry to date. Based on electronic structure calculations and ab-initio molecular dynamics simulations, we are able to provide a consistent picture of the growth process of a class of epitaxial oxides around SrO and SrTiO3. The detailed understanding of the interfacial binding principles has also allowed us to propose a way to engineer the band-offsets between the oxide and the silicon substrate.
The quasi-two-dimensional electronic gas at the (111) SrTiO$_3$-based heterostructure interfaces is described by a multi-band tight-binding model providing electronic bands in agreement at low energies with photoemission experiments. We analyze both the roles of the spin-orbit coupling and of the trigonal crystal field effects. We point out the presence of a regime with sizable strain where the band structure exhibits a Dirac cone whose features are consistent with \textit{ab-initio} approaches. The combined effect of spin-orbit coupling and trigonal strain gives rise to non-trivial spin and o…
We present an \textit{ab initio} framework to calculate anharmonic phonon frequency and phonon lifetime that is applicable to severely anharmonic systems. We employ self-consistent phonon (SCPH) theory with microscopic anharmonic force constants, which are extracted from density-functional calculations using the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator technique. We apply the method to the high-temperature phase of SrTiO$_{3}$ and obtain well-defined phonon quasiparticles that are free from imaginary frequencies. Here we show that the anharmonic phonon frequency of the antiferrodistorti…
ThTaN$_3$, a rare cubic perovskite nitride semiconductor, has been studied using {\it ab initio} methods. Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) results in band inversion and a band gap of 150 meV at the zone center. In spite of the trivial $Z_2$ indices, two pairs of spin-polarized surface bands cross the gap near the zone center, indicating that this system is a topological crystalline insulator with the mirror Chern number of $|{\cal C}_m|=2$ protected by the mirror and $C_4$ rotational symmetries. Additionally, SOC doubles the Seebeck coefficient, leading to a maximum of $\sim$400 $μ$V/K at 150 K for c…
Using {\it ab initio} density functional theory we explore the behavior of thin layers of metallic $d^4$ SrFeO$_3$ confined between the $d^0$ dielectric SrTiO$_3$ in a superlattice geometry. We find the presence of insulating SrTiO$_3$ spacer layers strongly affects the electronic properties of SrFeO$_3$: For single SrFeO$_3$ layers constrained to their bulk cubic structure, the Fermi surface is two-dimensional, nested and resembles the hole-doped superconducting cuprates. A Jahn-Teller instability couples to an octahedral tilt mode, however, to remove this degeneracy resulting in insulating s…
We investigated the electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity and thermopower as a function of Nb content (x) in Ba0.7Eu0.3Ti1-xNbxO3 (x = 0.001- 0.10) in the temperature range T = 400-2 K. The substitution of Nb destabilizes the ferroelectric insulating ground state of Ba0.7Eu0.3TiO3 and transforms into a paramagnetic metal for x = 0.1. Thermopower is negative in the entire composition range (S = -613 microVolt/K at 400 K for x = 0.001) and its magnitude decreases with increasing Nb content which suggests doping of electrons into empty Ti-3d(t2g) conduction band. In this series, the dimen…
TiO$_2$ and SrTiO$_3$ are well known materials in the field of photocatalysis due to their exceptional electronic structure, high chemical stability, non-toxicity and low cost. However, owing to the wide band gap, these can be utilized only in the UV region. Thus, it's necessary to expand their optical response in visible region by reducing their band gap through doping with metals, nonmetals or the combination of different elements, while retaining intact the photocatalytic efficiency. We report here, the codoping of a metal and a nonmetal in anatase TiO$_2$ and SrTiO$_3$ for efficient photoc…
We study Ti 1s near-edge spectroscopy in PbTiO$_3$ at various temperatures above and below its tetragonal-to-cubic phase transition, and in SrTiO$_3$ at room temperature. Ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) runs on 80-atom supercells are used to determine the average internal coordinates and their fluctuations. We determine that one vector local order parameter is the dominant contributor to changes in spectral features: the displacement of the Ti ion with respect to its axial O neighbors in each Cartesian direction, as these displacements enhance the cross section for transitions to E$_{\rm g…
Using path-integral Monte Carol simulations and an ab initio effective Hamiltonian, we study the effects of quantum fluctuations on structural phase transitions in the cubic perovskite compounds SrTiO3 and BaTiO3. We find quantum fluctuations affect ferroelectric (FE) transitions more strongly than antiferrodistortive (AFD) ones, even though the effective mass of a single FE local mode is larger. For SrTiO3 we find that the quantum fluctuations suppress the FE transition completely, and reduce the AFD transition temperature from 130K to 110K. For BaTiO3, quantum fluctuations do not affect the …
We present evidence of a drastic renormalization of the optical conductivity of graphene on SrTiO$_3$ resulting in almost full transparency in the ultraviolet region. These findings are attributed to resonant excitonic effects further supported by \emph{ab initio} Bethe-Salpeter equation and density functional theory calculations. The ($π$,$π$*)-orbitals of graphene and Ti-3\textit{d} $t_{2g}$ orbitals of SrTiO$_3$ are strongly hybridized and the interactions of electron-hole states residing in those orbitals play dominant role in the graphene optical conductivity. These interactions are prese…
The effective mass is one of the main factors determining the Seebeck coefficient and electronic conductivity. Nb-doping increases the effective mass because of two reasons, lattice constants increase and electronic effects. In this ab-initio study the effective mass is estimated from the curvature of electronic bands and it could be clarified that the deformation of SrTiO3 crystals has a significant influence on bandgap and effective DOS and band mass, which are both in excellent agreement to experimental data. However, the electronic effect due to the e2g- band flattening near the Gamma-poin…
The theories of flexoelectricity and that of nonlocal elasticity are closely related, and are often considered together when modeling strain-gradient effects in solids. Here I show, based on a first-principles lattice-dynamical analysis, that their relationship is much more intimate than previously thought, and their consistent simultaneous treatment is crucial for obtaining correct physical answers. In particular, I identify a gauge invariance in the theory, whereby the energies associated to strain-gradient elasticity and flexoelectrically induced electric fields are individually reference-d…
In recent experiments the irradiation of insulators of perovskite type with swift heavy ions under glancing incidence has been shown to provide a unique means to generate periodically arranged nanodots at the surface. The physical origin of these patterns has been suggested to stem from a highly anisotropic electron density distribution within the bulk. In order to show the relevance of the electron density distribution of the target we present a model calculation for the system Xe$^{+23}$ $\to$ SrTiO$_{3}$ that is known to produce the aforementioned surface modifications. On the basis of the …
On the basis of detailed first-principles calculations the anisotropic thermoelectric transport properties of biaxially strained silicon were studied with focus on a possible enhancement of the powerfactor. Electron as well as hole doping were examined in a broad doping and temperature range. In the low-temperature and low-doping regime an enhancement of the powerfactor was obtained for compressive and tensile strain in the electron-doped case and for compressive strain in the hole-doped case. In the thermoelectrically more important high-temperature and high- doping regime a slight enhancemen…
Experimental results on Bi2FeCrO6 (BFCO) epitaxial films deposited by laser ablation on SrTiO3 substrates are presented. It has been theoretically predicted using first-principles density functional theory that BFCO is ferrimagnetic (with a magnetic moment of 2muB per formula unit) and ferroelectric (with a polarization of ~80 microC/cm2 at 0K). The crystal structure investigated using X-ray diffraction shows that the films are epitaxial with a high degree of crystallinity. Chemical analysis carried out by X-ray Microanalysis and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy indicates the correct cationic …
Transition metal oxides are considered promising thermoelectric materials for harvesting high-temperature waste heat due to their stability, abundance and low toxicity. Despite their typically strong ionic character, they can exhibit surprisingly high power factors $σS^2$, as in n-type SrTiO$_3$ for instance. Thus, it is worth examining other transition metal oxides that might surpass the performances of SrTiO$_3$. This theoretical paper investigates the thermoelectric properties of n-type rutile TiO$_2$, which is the most stable phase of titanium oxide up to 2000 K. The electronic structure i…
Electric and thermoelectric properties of silicene nanoribbons doped with Al and P impurity atoms are investigated theoretically for both antiparallel and parallel orientations of the edge magnetic moments. In the former case, appropriately arranged impurities can lead to a net magnetic moment and thus also to spin thermoelectric effects. In the latter case, in turn, spin thermoelectric effects also occur in the absence of impurities. Numerical results based on ab-initio calculations show that the spin thermopower can be considerably enhanced by the impurities.
Thin films of high-permittivity dielectrics are considered ideal candidates for realizing high charge density nanosized capacitors for use in next generation energy storage and nanoelectronic applications. The experimentally observed capacitance of such film nanocapacitors is, however, an order of magnitude lower than expected. This dramatic drop in capacitance is attributed to the so called dead layer - a low-permittivity layer at the metal-dielectric interface in series with the high-permittivity dielectric. The exact nature of the dead layer and the reasons for its origin still remain somew…
Weyl semimetals are characterized by the presence of massless band dispersion in momentum space. When a Weyl semimetal meets magnetism, large anomalous transport properties emerge as a consequence of its topological nature. Here, using $in-situ$ spin- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy combined with $ab\ initio$ calculations, we visualize the spin-polarized Weyl cone and flat-band surface states of ferromagnetic Co$_2$MnGa films with full remanent magnetization. We demonstrate that the anomalous Hall and Nernst conductivities systematically grow when the magnetization-induced massiv…
The effect of high tensile strain and low dimensionality on the magnetic and electronic properties of CaMnO$_3$ ultrathin films, epitaxially grown on SrTiO$_3$ substrates, are experimentally studied and theoretically analyzed. By means of ab initio calculations, we find that, both, the high strain produced by the substrate and the presence of the free surface contribute to the stabilization of an in-plane ferromagnetic coupling, giving rise to a non-zero net magnetic moment in the ultrathin films. Coupled with this change in the magnetic order we find an insulator-metal transition triggered by…
Control of order-disorder phase transitions is a fundamental materials science challenge, underpinning the development of energy storage technologies such as solid oxide fuel cells and batteries, ultra-high temperature ceramics, and durable nuclear waste forms. At present, the development of promising complex oxides for these applications is hindered by a poor understanding of how interfaces affect lattice disordering processes and defect transport. Here we explore the evolution of local disorder in ion-irradiated La$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ / SrTiO$_3$ thin film heterostructures using a combination of …
CrN/MgO(111) multilayers modeled via \textit{ab initio} calculations give rise to nanoscale, scalable, spatially separated two-dimensional electron and hole gases (2DEG+2DHG), each confined to its own CrN interface. Due to the Cr $3d^3$ configuration, both electron and hole gases are based on correlated transition metal layers involving bands of $3d$ character. Transport calculations predict each subsystem will have a large thermopower, on the order of 250 $μ$$V /K$ at room temperature. These heterostructures combine a large thermoelectric efficiency with scalable nanoscale conducting sheets; …
Using finite-temperature phonon calculations and the Lyddane-Sachs-Teller relations, we calculate ab initio the static dielectric constants of 78 semiconducting oxides and fluorides with cubic perovskite structures at 1000 K. We first compare our method with experimental measurements, and we find that it succeeds in describing the temperature dependence and the relative ordering of the static dielectric constant $ε_{DC}$ in the series of oxides BaTiO$_{3}$, SrTiO$_{3}$, KTaO$_{3}$. We show that the effects of anharmonicity on the ion-clamped dielectric constant, on Born charges, and on phonon …
The observation of metallic interface between band insulators LaAlO$_3$ and SrTiO$_3$ has led to massive efforts to understand the origin of the phenomenon as well as to search for other systems hosting such two dimensional electron gases (2-DEG). However, the understanding of the origin of the 2-DEG is very often hindered as several possible mechanisms such as polar catastrophe, cationic intermixing and oxygen vacancy (OV) etc. can be operative simultaneously. The presence of a heavy element makes KTaO$_3$ (KTO) based 2-DEG a potential platform to investigate spin orbit coupling driven novel …
In the present work, we report the experimental thermopower ($α$) data for ZnV$_{2}$O$_{4}$ compound in the high temperature range 300-600 K. The value of $α$ is found to be $\sim$184 and $\sim$126 $μ$V/K at $\sim$300 and $\sim$600 K, respectively. The temperature dependent behavior of $α$ is almost linear in the measured temperature range. To understand the large and positive $α$ value observed in this compound, we have also investigated the electronic and thermoelectric properties by combining the \textit{ab-initio} electronic structures calculations with Boltzmann transport theory. Within t…
