We investigated the electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity and thermopower as a function of Nb content (x) in Ba0.7Eu0.3Ti1-xNbxO3 (x = 0.001- 0.10) in the temperature range T = 400-2 K. The substitution of Nb destabilizes the ferroelectric insulating ground state of Ba0.7Eu0.3TiO3 and transforms into a paramagnetic metal for x = 0.1. Thermopower is negative in the entire composition range (S = -613 microVolt/K at 400 K for x = 0.001) and its magnitude decreases with increasing Nb content which suggests doping of electrons into empty Ti-3d(t2g) conduction band. In this series, the dimensionless figure of merit (ZT) increases with temperature for all the compositions and the x = 0.03 composition exhibits the maximum ZT (= 0.12 at 400 K). The enhanced value of ZT is primarily due to the low thermal conductivity of samples in this series (~ 0.7 to 1 W/(m.K) at 400 K) compared to other potential high temperature n-type thermoelectric oxides such as carrier doped SrTiO3 and CaMnO3. The low thermal conductivity in our compounds most likely arises from heavy Eu2+ ion and lattice disorder introduced by Nb5+ which scatter phonons effectively.
It is thought that the proposed new family of multi-functional materials namely the ferroelectric thermoelectrics may exhibit enhanced functionalities due to the coupling of the thermoelectric parameters with ferroelectric polarization in solids. Therefore, the ferroelectric thermoelectrics are expected to be of immense technological and fundamental significance. As a first step towards this direction, it is most important to identify the existing high performance thermoelectric materials exhibiting ferroelectricity. Herein, through the direct measurement of local polarization switching we sho…

Ferroelectric domain walls are boundaries between regions with different polarization orientations in a ferroelectric material. Using first principles calculations, we characterize all different types of domain walls forming on ($11\bar{1}$), ($111$) and ($1\bar{1}0$) crystallographic planes in thermoelectric GeTe. We find large structural distortions in the vicinity of most of these domain walls, which are driven by polarization variations. We show that such strong strain-order parameter coupling will considerably reduce the lattice thermal conductivity of GeTe samples containing domain walls…
We present a strategy for increasing thermoelectric performance by invoking ferroelectric distortion in a transition-metal oxide. By using an ab initio calculation approach with the Boltzmann transport equation, a large Seebeck coefficient is calculated in n-type BaTiO3. The polar structural distortion causes the peculiar dispersion of the lowest conduction band, which enhances the Seebeck coefficient along the polar direction. A microscopic mechanism of carrier concentration dependence of the Seebeck coefficient is discussed in terms of the band velocity distribution in the Brillouin zone.
The proximity to structural phase transitions in IV-VI thermoelectric materials is one of the main reasons for their large phonon anharmonicity and intrinsically low lattice thermal conductivity $κ$. However, the $κ$ of GeTe increases at the ferroelectric phase transition near $700$ K. Using first-principles calculations with the temperature dependent effective potential method, we show that this rise in $κ$ is the consequence of negative thermal expansion in the rhombohedral phase and increase in the phonon lifetimes in the high-symmetry phase. Negative thermal expansion increases phonon grou…
Understanding the microscopic processes affecting the bulk thermal conductivity is crucial to develop more efficient thermoelectric materials. PbTe is currently one of the leading thermoelectric materials, largely thanks to its low thermal conductivity. However, the origin of this low thermal conductivity in a simple rocksalt structure has so far been elusive. Using a combination of inelastic neutron scattering measurements and first-principles computations of the phonons, we identify a strong anharmonic coupling between the ferroelectric transverse optic (TO) mode and the longitudinal acousti…
There is currently much interest in materials and structures that provide coupled ferroelectric and ferromagnetic responses, with a long-term goal of developing new memories and spintronic logic elements. Within the field there is a focus on composites coupled by magnetostrictive and piezoelectric strain transmitted across ferromagnetic-ferroelectric interfaces, but substrate clamping limits the response in the supported multilayer configuration favoured for devices. This constraint is avoided in a ferroelectric-ferromagnetic bilayer in which the magnetic response is modulated by the electric …
The local atomic structure of SnSe was characterized across its orthorhmbic-to-orthorhombic structural phase transition using x-ray pair distribution function analysis. Substantial Sn off-centering distortions persist in the high symmetry high temperature phase, with symmetry different from that of ordered distortions below the transition. The analysis implies that the transition is neither order-disorder nor displacive, but rather a complex crossover where the character of coupling changes from 3D-like at low temperature to 2D-like at high temperature. Robust ferro-coupled SnSe intra-layer di…
The quest for nonmagnetic Weyl semimetals with high tunability of phase has remained a demanding challenge. As the symmetry breaking control parameter, the ferroelectric order can be steered to turn on/off the Weyl semimetals phase, adjust the band structures around the Fermi level, and enlarge/shrink the momentum separation of Weyl nodes which generate the Berry curvature as the emergent magnetic field. Here, we report the realization of a ferroelectric nonmagnetic Weyl semimetal based on indium doped Pb1 xSnxTe alloy where the underlying inversion symmetry as well as mirror symmetry is broke…
GeTe is a well-known ferroelectric and thermoelectric material that undergoes a structural phase transition from a rhombohedral to the rocksalt structure at $\sim 600-700$ K. We present a first principles approach to calculate the thermal expansion of GeTe in the rhombohedral phase up to the Curie temperature. We find the minimum of the Helmholtz free energy with respect to each structural parameter in a manner similar to the traditional Gr{ü}neisen theory, and account for the temperature dependence of elastic constants. We obtain the temperature variation of the structural parameters of rhomb…
We study the thermopower of a junction between a metal and a strongly correlated semiconductor. Both in the electronic ferroelectric regime and in the Kondo insulator regime the thermoelectric figures of merit, ZT, of these junctions are compared with that of the ordinary semiconductor. By inserting at the interface one or two monolayers of atoms different from the bulk, with a suitable choice of rare-earth elements very high values of ZT can be reached at low temperatures. The potential of the junction as a thermoelectric device is discussed.
The major obstacle in the design of materials with low lattice thermal conductivity is the difficulty in efficiently scattering phonons across the entire frequency spectrum. Using first principles calculations, we show that driving PbTe materials to the brink of the ferroelectric phase transition could be a powerful strategy to solve this problem. We illustrate this concept by applying tensile [001] strain to PbTe and its alloys with another rock-salt IV-VI material, PbSe; and by alloying PbTe with a rhombohedral IV-VI material, GeTe. This induces extremely soft optical modes at the zone cente…
At room temperature, PbTe and SnTe are efficient thermoelectrics with a cubic structure. At low temperature, SnTe undergoes a ferroelectric transition with a critical temperature strongly dependent on the hole concentration, while PbTe is an incipient ferroelectric. By using the stochastic self-consistent harmonic approximation, we investigate the anharmonic phonon spectra and the occurrence of a ferroelectric transition in both systems. We find that vibrational spectra strongly depends on the approximation used for the exchange-correlation kernel in density functional theory. If gradient corr…
The binary compound SnSe exhibits record high thermoelectric performance, largely because of its very low thermal conductivity. The origin of the strong phonon anharmonicity leading to the low thermal conductivity of SnSe is investigated through first-principles calculations of the electronic structure and phonons. It is shown that a Jahn-Teller instability of the electronic structure is responsible for the high-temperature lattice distortion between the Cmcm and Pnma phases. The coupling of phonon modes and the phase transition mechanism are elucidated, emphasizing the connection with hybrid …
Ferroelectrics with spontaneous electric polarization play an essential role in today's device engineering, such as capacitors and memories. Their physical properties are further enriched by suppressing the long-range polar order, as is exemplified by quantum paraelectrics with giant piezoelectric and dielectric responses at low temperatures. Likewise in metals, a polar lattice distortion has been theoretically predicted to give rise to various unusual physical properties. So far, however, a "ferroelectric"-like transition in metals has seldom been controlled and hence its possible impacts on …
