We investigate the effect of a general toric wall crossing on genus zero Gromov-Witten theory. Given two complete toric orbifolds $X_+$ and $X_-$ related by wall crossing under variation of GIT, we prove that their respective $I$-functions are related by linear transformation and asymptotic expansion. We use this comparison to deduce a similar result for birational complete intersections in $X_+$ and $X_-$. This extends the work of the previous authors in Acosta-Shoemaker to the case of complete intersections in toric varieties, and generalizes some of the results of Coates-Iritani-Jiang on the crepant transformation conjecture to the setting of non-zero discrepancy.
We review how log Gromov--Witten invariants of toric varieties can be used to express quiver Donaldson--Thomas invariants in terms of the simpler attractor Donaldson--Thomas invariants. This is an exposition of joint work with Pierrick Bousseau.
Gromov-Witten invariants have been constructed to be deformation invariant, but their behavior under other transformations is subtle. In this note we show that logarithmic Gromov-Witten invariants are also invariant under appropriately defined logarithmic modifications.
In this paper we analyze six examples of birational transformations between toric orbifolds: three crepant resolutions, two crepant partial resolutions, and a flop. We study the effect of these transformations on genus-zero Gromov-Witten invariants, proving the Coates-Corti-Iritani-Tseng/Ruan form of the Crepant Resolution Conjecture in each case. Our results suggest that this form of the Crepant Resolution Conjecture may also hold for more general crepant birational transformations. They also suggest that Ruan's original Crepant Resolution Conjecture should be modified, by including appropria…
Bernardi and Tirabassi show the existence of full strong exceptional collections consisting of line bundles on smooth toric Fano $3$-folds under assuming Bondal's conjecture, which states that the Frobenius push-forward of the structure sheaf $\mc O_X$ generates the derived category $D^b(X)$ for smooth projective toric varieties $X$. In this article, we show Bondal's conjecture for smooth toric Fano $3$-folds and also improve their result, using birational geometry.
We announce a factorization result for equivariant birational morphisms between toric 4-folds whose source is Fano: such a morphism is always a composite of blow-ups along smooth invariant centers. Moreover, we show with a counterexample that, differently from the 3-dimensional case, even if both source and target are Fano, the intermediate varieties can not be chosen Fano.
Toric geometry provides a bridge between algebraic geometry and combinatorics of fans and polytopes. For each polarized toric variety (X,L) we have associated a polytope P. In this thesis we use this correspondence to study birational geometry for toric varieties. To this end, we address subjects such as Minimal Model Program, Mori fiber spaces, and chamber structures on the cone of effective divisors. We translate some results from these theories to the combinatorics of polytopes and use them to get structure theorems on space of polytopes. In particular, we treat toric varieties known as 2-F…
Let X be a Gorenstein orbifold and let Y be a crepant resolution of X. We state a conjecture relating the genus-zero Gromov--Witten invariants of X to those of Y, which differs in general from the Crepant Resolution Conjectures of Ruan and Bryan--Graber, and prove our conjecture when X = P(1,1,2) and X = P(1,1,1,3). As a consequence, we see that the original form of the Bryan--Graber Conjecture holds for P(1,1,2) but is probably false for P(1,1,1,3). Our methods are based on mirror symmetry for toric orbifolds.
The recent two proofs for the (weak) factorization theorem for birational maps, one by Włodarczyk and the other by Abramovich-Karu-Matsuki-Włodarczyk rely on the results of Morelli. The former uses the process for $π$-desingularization (the most subtle part of Morelli's combinatorial algorithm), while the latter uses the strong factorization of toric (toroidal) birational maps directly. This paper provides a coherent account of Morelli's work (and its toroidal extension) clarifying some discrepancies in the original argument.
In this paper we study smooth toric Fano varieties using primitive relations and toric Mori theory. We show that for any irreducible invariant divisor D in a toric Fano variety X, we have $0\leqρ_X-ρ_D\leq 3$, for the difference of the Picard numbers of X and D. Moreover, if $ρ_X-ρ_D>0$ (with some additional hypotheses if $ρ_X-ρ_D=1$), we give an explicit birational description of X. Using this result, we show that when dim X=5, we have $ρ_X\leq 9$. In the second part of the paper, we study equivariant birational morphisms f whose source is Fano. We give some general results, and in dimension …
We prove the equivariant Gromov-Witten theory of a nonsingular toric 3-fold X with primary insertions is equivalent to the equivariant Donaldson-Thomas theory of X. As a corollary, the topological vertex calculations by Agangic, Klemm, Marino, and Vafa of the Gromov-Witten theory of local Calabi-Yau toric 3-folds are proven to be correct in the full 3-leg setting.
We provide an enumerative meaning of the mirror maps for toric Calabi-Yau orbifolds in terms of relative Gromov-Witten invariants of the toric compactifications. As a consequence, we obtain an equality between relative Gromov-Witten invariants and open Gromov-Witten invariants. Therefore, the instanton corrected mirrors for toric Calabi-Yau orbifolds can be constructed using relative Gromov-Witten invariants.
We prove a conjecture of Artur Elezi in a generalized form suggested by Givental. Namely, our main result relates genus-0 Gromov--Witten invariants of a bundle space with such invariants of the base, provided that the fiber is a toric manifold. When the base is the point, a new proof of mirror theorems by A. Givental and by H. Iritani for toric manifolds is obtained.
Toric geometry provides a bridge between the theory of polytopes and algebraic geometry: one can associate to each lattice polytope a polarized toric variety. In this thesis we explore this correspondence to classify smooth lattice polytopes having small degree, extending a classification provided by Dickenstein, Di Rocco and Piene. Our approach consists in interpreting the degree of a polytope as a geometric invariant of the corresponding polarized variety, and then applying techniques from Adjunction Theory and Mori Theory. In the opposite direction, we use the combinatorics of fans to descr…
For a toric Calabi-Yau (CY) orbifold $\mathcal{X}$ whose underlying toric variety is semi-projective, we construct and study a non-toric Lagrangian torus fibration on $\mathcal{X}$, which we call the Gross fibration. We apply the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow (SYZ) recipe to the Gross fibration of $\mathcal{X}$ to construct its mirror with the instanton corrections coming from genus 0 open orbifold Gromov-Witten (GW) invariants, which are virtual counts of holomorphic orbi-disks in $\mathcal{X}$ bounded by fibers of the Gross fibration. We explicitly evaluate all these invariants by first proving an o…
We show that the standard generating functions for genus 0 two-point twisted Gromov-Witten invariants arising from concavex vector bundles over symplectic toric manifolds are explicit transforms of the corresponding one-point generating functions. The latter are, in turn, transforms of Givental's J-function. We obtain closed formulas for them and, in particular, for two-point Gromov-Witten invariants of non-negative toric complete intersections. Such two-point formulas should play a key role in the computation of genus 1 Gromov-Witten invariants (closed, open, and unoriented) of toric complete…
We compute local Gromov-Witten invariants of cubic surfaces at all genera. We use a deformation of a cubic surface to a nef toric surface and the deformation invariance of Gromov-Witten invariants.
In this paper, we give a tropical method for computing Gromov-Witten type invariants of Fano manifolds of special type. This method applies to those Fano manifolds which admit toric degenerations to toric Fano varieties with singularities allowing small resolutions. Examples include (generalized) flag manifolds of type A, and some moduli space of rank two bundles on a genus two curve.
We describe the quantum cohomology rings of a class of toric varieties. The description includes, in addition to the (already known) ring presentations, the (new) analogues for toric varieties of the sorts of quantum Giambelli formulas which exist already for Grassmannian varieties, flag varieties, etc.
This is an erratum to math.AG/9803126, Tohoku 51 (1999) 489-537. This erratum describes: 1. the failure of the algorithm in [AMR] and [Morelli1] for the strong factorization pointed out by Kalle Karu, 2. the statement of a refined weak factorization theorem for toroidal birational morphisms in [AMR], in the form utilized in [AKMR] for the proof of the weak factorization theorem for general birationla maps, avoiding the use of the above mentioned algorithm for the strong factorization, and 3. a list of corrections for a few other mistakes in [AMR], mostly pointed out by Laurent Bonavero.
Using degeneration techniques, we prove the correspondence of tropical curve counts and log Gromov-Witten invariants with general incidence and psi-class conditions in toric varieties for genus zero curves and all non-superabundant higher-genus situations. We also relate the log invariants to the ordinary ones, in particular explaining the appearance of negative multiplicities in the descendant correspondence result of Mark Gross.
Starting from $\mathbb{C}^*$-actions on complex projective varieties, we construct and investigate birational maps among the corresponding extremal fixed point components. We study the case in which such birational maps are locally described by toric flips, either of Atiyah type or so called non-equalized. We relate this notion of toric flip with the property of the action being non-equalized. Moreover, we find explicit examples of rational homogeneous varieties admitting a $\mathbb{C}^*$-action whose weighted blow-up at the extremal fixed point components gives a birational map among two proj…
We prove that for a compact toric manifold whose anti-canonical divisor is numerically effective, the Lagrangian Floer superpotential defined by Fukaya-Oh-Ohto-Ono is equal to the superpotential written down by using the toric mirror map under a convergence assumption. This gives a method to compute open Gromov-Witten invariants using mirror symmetry.
In this expository article, we explain how to use localization to compute Gromov-Witten invariants of smooth toric varieties and orbifold Gromov-Witten invariants of smooth toric Deligne-Mumford stacks.
We study the formation of finite time singularities of the Kahler-Ricci flow in relation to high codimensional birational surgery in algebraic geometry. We show that the Kahler-Ricci flow on an n-dimensionl Kahler manifold contracts a complex submanifold $\mathbb{P}^m$ with normal bundle $\oplus_{j=1}^{n-m}\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^m}(-a_j)$ for $a_j\in\mathbb{Z}^+$ and $\sum_{j=1}^{n-m} a_j \leq m$ in Gromov-Hausdorff topology with suitable initial Kahler class. We also show that the Kahler-Ricci flow resolves a family of isolated singularities uniquely in Gromov-Hausdorff topology. In particul…
We present a new approach to construct $T$-equivariant flat toric degenerations of flag varieties and spherical varieties, combining ideas coming from the theory of Newton-Okounkov bodies with ideas originally stemming from PBW-filtrations. For each pair $(S,>)$ consisting of a birational sequence and a monomial order, we attach to the affine variety $G/\hskip -3.5pt/U$ a monoid $Γ=Γ(S,>)$. As a side effect we get a vector space basis $\mathbb B_Γ$ of $\mathbb C[G/\hskip -3.5pt/U]$, the elements being indexed by $Γ$. The basis $\mathbb B_Γ$ has multiplicative properties very similar to those o…
We study how relative quantum cohomology, defined by Tseng--You and Fan--Wu--You, varies under birational transformations. For toric complete intersections with simple normal crossings divisors that contain the loci of indeterminacy, we prove that their respective relative $I$-functions can be directly identified. For toric complete intersections with smooth divisors, we prove that their respective relative $I$-functions are related by analytic continuation. We also study some connections with extremal transitions and FJRW theory.
We construct a fully equivariant correspondence between Gromov-Witten and stable pairs descendent theories for toric 3-folds X. Our method uses geometric constraints on descendents, A_n surfaces, and the topological vertex. The rationality of the stable pairs descendent theory plays a crucial role in the definition of the correspondence. We prove our correspondence has a non-equivariant limit. As a result of the construction, we prove an explicit non-equivariant stationary descendent correspondence for X (conjectured previously by MNOP). Using descendent methods, we establish the relative GW/P…
For any finite abelian group G, the equivariant Gromov-Witten invariants of C^r/G can be viewed as a certain kind of abelian Hurwitz-Hodge integrals. In this note, we use Tseng's orbifold quantum Riemann-Roch theorem to express this kind of abelian Hurwitz-Hodge integrals as a sum over Feynman graphs, where the weight of each graph is expressed in terms of descendant integrals over moduli spaces of stable curves and representations of G. This expression will play a crucial role in the proof of the remodeling conjecture (arXiv:0709.1453, arXiv:0807.0597) for affine toric Calabi-Yau 3-orbifolds …
It is pretty well-known that toric Fano varieties of dimension k with terminal singularities correspond to convex lattice polytopes P in R^k of positive finite volume, such that intersection of P and Z^k consists of the point 0 and vertices of P. Likewise, Q-factorial terminal toric singularities essentially correspond to lattice simplexes with no lattice points inside or on the boundary (except the vertices). There have been a lot work, especially in the last 20 years or so on classification of these objects. The main goal of this paper is to bring together these and related results, that are…
We study open-closed orbifold Gromov-Witten invariants of 3-dimensional Calabi-Yau smooth toric Deligne-Mumford (DM) stacks (with possibly non-trivial generic stabilizers and semi-projective coarse moduli spaces) relative to Lagrangian branes of Aganagic-Vafa type. We present foundational materials of enumerative geometry of stable holomorphic maps from bordered orbifold Riemann surfaces to a 3-dimensional Calabi-Yau smooth toric DM stack with boundaries mapped into a Aganagic-Vafa brane. All genus open-closed Gromov-Witten invariants are defined by torus localization and depend on the choice …
Based on the large N duality relating topological string theory on Calabi-Yau 3-folds and Chern-Simons theory on 3-manifolds, M. Aganagic, A. Klemm, M. Marino and C. Vafa proposed the topological vertex (hep-th/0305132), an algorithm on computing Gromov-Witten invariants in all genera of any non-singular toric Calabi-Yau 3-fold. In this expository article, we describe the mathematical theory of the topological vertex developed by J. Li, K. Liu, J. Zhou, and the author (math/0408426).
In this paper, we compute the open Gromov-Witten invariants for every compact toric surface X which is semi-Fano (i.e. the anticanonical line bundle is nef). Unlike the Fano case, this involves non-trivial obstructions in the corresponding moduli problem. As a consequence, an explicit formula for the Lagrangian Floer superpotential W is obtained, which in turn gives an explicit presentation of the small quantum cohomology ring of X. We also provide a computational verification of the conjectural ring isomorphism between the small quantum cohomology of X and the Jacobian ring of W.
In this paper, we classify projective toric birational morphisms from Gorenstein toric 3-folds onto the 3-dimensional affine space with relatively ample anti-canonical divisors.
In this paper, using the degeneration formula we obtain a blowup formulae of local Gromov-Witten invariants of Fano surfaces. This formula makes it possible to compute the local Gromov-Witten invariants of non-toric Fano surfaces form toric Fano surface, such as del Pezzo surfaces. This formula also verifed an expectation of Chiang-Klemm-Yau-Zaslow.
We introduce a global Landau-Ginzburg model which is mirror to several toric Deligne-Mumford stacks and describe the change of the Gromov-Witten theories under discrepant transformations. We prove a formal decomposition of the quantum cohomology D-modules (and of the all-genus Gromov-Witten potentials) under a discrepant toric wall-crossing. In the case of weighted blowups of weak-Fano compact toric stacks along toric centres, we show that an analytic lift of the formal decomposition corresponds, via the $\widehatΓ$-integral structure, to an Orlov-type semiorthogonal decomposition of topologic…
We define a formalism for computing open orbifold GW invariants of [C^3/G] where G is any finite abelian group. We prove that this formalism and a suitable gluing algorithm can be used to compute GW invariants in all genera of any toric CY orbifold of dimension 3. We conjecture a correspondence with the DT orbifold vertex of Bryan-Cadman-Young.
We exhaustively analyze the toric symmetries of CP^3 and its toric blowups. Our motivation is to study toric symmetry as a computational technique in Gromov-Witten theory and Donaldson-Thomas theory. We identify all nontrivial toric symmetries. The induced nontrivial isomorphisms lift and provide new symmetries at the level of Gromov-Witten Theory and Donaldson-Thomas Theory. The polytopes of the toric varieties in question include the permutohedron, the cyclohedron, the associahedron, and in fact all graph associahedra, among others.
We study Gromov-Witten theory of hypertoric Deligne-Mumford stacks from two points of view. From the viewpoint of representation theory, we calculate the operator of small quantum product by a divisor, following \cite{BMO}, \cite{MO}, \cite{MS}. From the viewpoint of Lawrence toric geometry, we compare Gromov-Witten invariants of a hypertoric Deligne-Mumford stack with those of its associated Lawrence toric stack.
We present a proof of the mirror conjecture of Aganagic-Vafa [arXiv:hep-th/0012041] and Aganagic-Klemm-Vafa [arXiv:hep-th/0105045] on disk enumeration in toric Calabi-Yau 3-folds for all smooth semi-projective toric Calabi-Yau 3-folds. We consider both inner and outer branes, at arbitrary framing. In particular, we recover previous results on the conjecture for (i) an inner brane at zero framing in the total space of the canonical line bundle of the projective plane (Graber-Zaslow [arXiv:hep-th/0109075]), (ii) an outer brane at arbitrary framing in the resolved conifold (Zhou [arXiv:1001.0447]…
We introduce iterated sequences for Grassmannians, a new class of Fang-Fourier-Littelmanns' birational sequences and explain how they give rise to points in $\text{trop}(\text{Gr}(k,\mathbb C^n))$, Speyer-Sturmfels' tropical Grassmannian. For $\text{Gr}(2,\mathbb C^n)$ we show that the associated valuations induce toric degenerations. We describe recursively the vertices of the corresponding Newton--Okounkov polytopes, which are particular vertices of a hypercube and hence integral. We show further that every toric degeneration of $\text{Gr}(2,\mathbb C^{n})$ constructed using the tropical Gra…
In general, a Kobayashi-Hitchin correspondence establishes an isomorphism between a moduli space of stable algebraic geometric objects and a moduli space of solutions of a certain (generalized) Hermite-Einstein equation. We believe that, for a large class of moduli problems, this correspondence respects the virtual fundamental classes defined in the two categories. We prove this statement in an interesting case, namely the moduli problem associated with the symplectic factorization problem which yields the complete toric varieties. Therefore, our main objects are the moduli spaces of "twisted"…
We establish a correspondence between the disk invariants of a smooth toric Calabi-Yau 3-fold $X$ with boundary condition specified by a framed Aganagic-Vafa outer brane $(L, f)$ and the genus-zero closed Gromov-Witten invariants of a smooth toric Calabi-Yau 4-fold $\widetilde{X}$, proving the open/closed correspondence proposed by Mayr and developed by Lerche-Mayr. Our correspondence is the composition of two intermediate steps: $\circ$ First, a correspondence between the disk invariants of $(X,L,f)$ and the genus-zero maximally-tangent relative Gromov-Witten invariants of a relative Calabi-Y…
