The atomic pair distribution function (PDF) for nano-particles has to be corrected with a shape factor, also known as form factor, in order to take size and shape effects into consideration. For most anisotropic shapes an analytical formulation of the shape factor is a challenge. In this paper, we present a new method to numerically compute the shape factor using atomistic model. This numerical method to calculate PDF for a wide range of geometrical shapes is demonstrated. In addition, a fitting formulation, which effectively converts the numerical shape factors for some selected geometrical shapes to the analytical forms, is presented.
We present classical molecular dynamics calculations of the behavior of copper and gold nanoparticles on a graphene sheet, sheared with a constant applied force $F_{\rm a}$. The force $F_{\rm s}$ acting on the particle from the substrate depends on the material of the nanoparticles (Au or Cu), and exhibits a sawtooth dependency on time, which we attribute to local commensurability between the metal nanoparticle surface atomic positions with the graphene lattice. The time-averaged value of $F_{\rm s}$ (the friction force) acting on Au nanoparticles increases linearly with the contact area, havi…
We present a detailed atomistic picture of the oxidation mechanism of Co nanoparticles and its impact on magnetism by experimentally following the evolution of the structure, chemical composition, and magnetism of individual, gas-phase grown Co nanoparticles during controlled oxidation. The early stage oxidation occurs in a twostep process characterized by (i) the initial formation of small CoO crystallites randomly distributed across the nanoparticle surface, until their coalescence leads to structural completion of the oxide shell and passivation of the metallic core; (ii) progressive conver…
We present a computational study for the equilibrium shape of gold nanoparticles. By linking extensive quantum-mechanical calculations, based on Density-Functional Theory (DFT) to Wulff construction, we predict equilibrium shapes that are in good agreement with experimental observa- tions. We discuss the effect of the interactions between a nanoparticle and the encapsulating material on the equilibrium shape. As an example, we calculate adsorption of CO on several different Au(hkl) and use the results to explain the experimentally observed shape change of Au nanoparticles.
The validity of the linear elasticity theory is examined at the nanometer scale by investigating the vibrational properties of silver and gold nanoparticles whose diameters range from about 1.5 to 4 nm. Comparing the vibration modes calculated by elasticity theory and atomistic simulation based on the Embedded Atom Method, we first show that the anisotropy of the stiffness tensor in elastic calculation is essential to ensure a good agreement between elastic and atomistic models. Second, we illustrate the reduction of the number of vibration modes due to the diminution of the number of atoms wh…
Understanding and mastering the mechanical properties of metallic nanoparticles is crucial for their use in a wide range of applications. In this context, we use atomic-scale (Molecular Dynamics) and continuous (Finite Elements) calculations to investigate in details gold nanoparticles under deformation. By combining these two approaches, we show that the elastic properties of such nanoobjects are driven by their size but, above all, by their shape. This outcome was achieved by introducing a descriptor in the analysis of our results enabling to distinguish among the different nanoparticle shap…
Bimetallic nanoalloys such as nanoparticles and nanowires are attracting significant attention due to their vast potential applications such as in catalysis and nanoelectronics. Notably, Pd-Pt nanoparticles/nanowires are being widely recognized as catalysts and hydrogen sensors. Compared to unary systems, alloys present more structural complexity with various compositional configurations. Therefore, it is important to understand energetically preferred atomic structures of bimetallic nanoalloys. In this study, we performed a series of simulated annealing Monte Carlo simulations to predict the …
The shape of metal nanoparticles embedded in dielectric matrices influences the optical properties of the composite material. Swift heavy ion irradiation can induce a controllable shape transformation in gold and other metals embedded in amorphous silicon dioxide, where the particles elongate along the direction of the ion beam. The details of this transformation are not fully understood, but it is presumably related to nanometer-scale phase transitions induced by individual ion impacts. The phenomenon has been reproduced using atomistic simulations, although the time scale limitations and the…
We observe using ab initio methods that localized surface plasmon resonances in icosahedral silver nanoparticles enter the asymptotic region already between diameters of 1 and 2 nm, converging close to the classical quasistatic limit around 3.4 eV. We base the observation on time-dependent density-functional theory simulations of the icosahedral silver clusters Ag$_{55}$ (1.06 nm), Ag$_{147}$ (1.60 nm), Ag$_{309}$ (2.14 nm), and Ag$_{561}$ (2.68 nm). The simulation method combines the adiabatic GLLB-SC exchange-correlation functional with real time propagation in an atomic orbital basis set us…
The size-dependent phase stability of gamma-Al2O3 was studied by large-scale molecular dynamics simulations over a wide temperature range from 300 to 900 K. For the gamma-Al2O3 crystal, a bulk transformation to alpha-Al2O3 by an FCC-to-HCP transition of the O sublattice is still kinetically hindered at 900 K. However, local distortions of the FCC O-sublattice by the formation of quasi-octahedral Al local coordination spheres become thermally activated, as driven by the partial covalency of the Al-O bond. On the contrary, spherical gamma-Al2O3 NPs (with sizes of 6 and 10 nm) undergo a crystalli…
Signature of surface anisotropy in the spin-flip neutron scattering cross section of spherical nanoparticles: atomistic simulations and analytical theory
The effect of smooth shape changes of metallic nanoparticles on localized surface plasmon resonances is assessed with a boundary integral equation method. The boundary integral equation method allows compact expressions of nanoparticle polarizability which is expressed as an eigenmode sum of terms that depends on the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the integral operator associated to the boundary integral equation method. Shape variations change not only the eigenvalues but also their coupling weights to the electromagnetic field. Thus, rather small changes in the shape may induce large vari…
We study the influence of spherical, triangular, and rod-like nanoparticles on the mechanical properties of a polymer nanocomposite (PNC), via coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations. We focus on how the nanoparticle size, loading, mass, and shape influence the PNC's elastic modulus, stress at failure and resistance against cavity formation and growth, under external stress. We find that in the regime of strong polymer-nanoparticle interactions, the formation of a polymer network via temporary polymer-nanoparticle crosslinks has a predominant role on the PNC reinforcement. Spherical nano…
Microscopic description of Raman spectra in nanopowders of nonpolar crystals is accomplished by developing the theory of disorder-induced broadening of optical vibrational eigenmodes. Analytical treatment of this problem is performed, and line shape and width are determined as functions of phonon quantum numbers, nanoparticle shape, size, and the strength of disorder. The results are found to be strongly dependent on either the broadened line is separated or it is overlapped with other lines of the spectrum. Three models of disorder, i.e. weak point-like impurities, weak smooth random potentia…
Atomistic simulations are performed to study the statistical mechanical property of gold nanoparticles. It is demonstrated that the yielding behavior of gold nanoparticles is governed by dislocation nucleation around surface steps. Since the nucleation of dislocations is an activated process with the aid of thermal fluctuation, the yield stress at a specific temperature should exhibit a statistical distribution rather than a definite constant value. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal that the yield stress follows a Gaussian distribution at a specific temperature. As the temperature increase…
Using B3LYP method, the nearly spheric structure of [Ti7O28H26]2- , the rod-like structures of [Ti2O10H10]2- and [Ti7O30H10]2- chains and the structures of their neutral complexes with Cu2+ coordinated at various terminal or bridging oxygen sites were optimized in order to assess the toxicity of rutile nanoparticles
We compare the light extinction spectra of elongated gold nanoparticles with different shapes (cylinder, spherocylinder and ellipsoid) and sizes of 10 to 100~nm. We argue that the equivalence of the various moments of mass distribution is the natural comparison criterion -rather than the length-to-diameter (aspect) ratio generally used in the literature- and that it leads to better spectral correspondence between the various shapes.
The rheology of nanoparticle suspensions for nanoparticles of various shapes with equal mass is studied using molecular dynamics simulations. The equilibrium structure and the response to imposed shear are analyzed for suspensions of spheres, rods, plates, and jacks in an explicit solvent for both charged and uncharged nanoparticles. For the volume fraction studied, ?$ϕ_{vf}=0.075$, the uncharged systems are all in their isotropic phase and the viscosity is only weakly dependent on shape for spheres, rods, and plate whereas for the jacks the viscosity is an order of magnitude larger than for t…
A workflow is presented for performing pair distribution function (PDF) analysis of defected materials using structures generated from atomistic simulations. A large collection of structures, which differ in the types and concentrations of defects present, are obtained through energy minimization with an empirical interatomic potential. Each of the structures is refined against an experimental PDF. The structures with the lowest goodness of fit $R_w$ values are taken as being representative of the experimental structure. The workflow is applied to anatase titanium dioxide ($a$-TiO$_2$) and tet…
Halogen compounds are capable of playing an important role in the manipulation of nanoparticle shapes and properties. In a new approach, we examined the shape evolution of CdSe nanorods to hexagonal pyramids in a hot-injection synthesis under the influence of halogenated additives in the form of organic chlorine, bromine and iodine compounds. Supported by DFT calculations, this shape evolution is explained as a result of X-type ligand coordination to sloped and flat Cd-rich facets and an equilibrium shape strongly influenced by halides. Synchrotron XPS measurements and TXRF results show that t…
The influence of pre-strain and temperature on the superior properties exhibited by an Nb nanowire embedded in a NiTi shape memory alloy (SMA) are investigated via molecular dynamics simulations. To this end, a new Nb-Ni-Ti ternary interatomic potential based on the second nearest-neighbor modified embedded-atom method (2NN MEAM) is developed and employed. The origin of the unique phenomena of quasi-linear elasticity, slim hysteresis, and reduction in Young's modulus observed for pre-strained nanowire-SMA composites is uncovered. The results demonstrate the importance of plastic deformation in…
Stabilization of Martensite and Austenite Phases and Realization of Two-way Martensitic Transition in Co-Ni-Ga Ferromagnetic Shape Memory Alloy Nanoparticles
We study a system of classical particles in two dimensions interacting through an isotropic pair potential that displays a martensitic phase transition between a triangular and a rhomboidal structure upon the change of a single parameter. Previously it was shown that this potential is able to reproduce the shape memory effect and super-elasticity, among other well known features of the phenomenology of martensites. Here we extend those previous studies and describe the development of the more subtle two-way shape memory effect. We show that in a poly-crystalline sample, the effect can be assoc…
We demonstrate scaffolding of plasmonic nanoparticles by topological defects induced by colloidal microspheres to match their surface boundary conditions with a uniform far-field alignment in a liquid crystal host. Displacing energetically costly liquid crystal regions of reduced order, anisotropic nanoparticles with concave or convex shapes not only stably localize in defects but also self-orient with respect to the microsphere surface. Using laser tweezers, we manipulate the ensuing nanoparticle-microsphere colloidal dimers, probing the strength of elastic binding and demonstrating self-asse…
We report a comprehensive study of aqueous halide adsorption on nanoparticles of gold and palladium that addresses several limitations hampering the use of atomistic modeling as a tool for understanding and improving wet-chemical synthesis and related applications. A combination of thermodynamic modeling with density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental data is used to predict equilibrium shapes of halide-covered nanoparticles as a function of the chemical environment. To ensure realistic and experimentally relevant results, we account for solvent effects and include a large s…
We observe growth of shape-controlled potassium nanoparticles inside a random network of glass nanopores, exposed to low-power laser radiation. Visible laser light plays a dual role: it increases the desorption probability of potassium atoms from the inner glass walls and induces the self-assembly of metastable metallic nanoparticles along the nanopores. By probing the sample transparency and the atomic light-induced desorption flux into the vapour phase, the dynamics of both cluster formation/evaporation and atomic photo-desorption processes are characterized. Results indicate that laser ligh…
Optical phonons in nanoparticles with the randomness of interatomic bonds are considered both analytically and numerically. For weak dilute disorder two qualitatively different regimes of separated and overlapped levels are observed, resembling the case of random atomic masses investigated previously. At stronger and/or more dense disorder, the particles become essentially inhomogeneous, thus constituting the minimal model to describe an amorphous phase, where the picture of vibrational modes becomes more subtle. We concentrate here on the experimentally relevant case of strong disorder locate…
The two most common polymorphs in industrial alite, $M_1$ and $M_3$, were characterized at the molecular scale. Different methods were employed and discussed to assess mechanical properties and specific heat of both polymorphs. The calculated homogenized elastic moduli and specific heat were found in good agreement with experimental measurements. A comparative analysis of spacial Young's modulus reveal isotropic and anisotropic spacial distribution for $M_1$ and $M_3$ respectively. A more isotropic compressive strength is also reported for $M_1$ when compared to $M_3$ polymorph. Cleavage energ…

We developed a grain growth model that is based on the energy minimisation of surfaces with respect to the volume energy and the grain's environment. We used the well-known FePt L1$_\text{0}$ system to discover the physical factors that drive the shape and size of FePt grains. It was found that the preferred growth directions are along symmetry planes that are determined by the basic crystal and driven by surface energy minimisation. The model developed here can be used to predict a grain's growth and shape as a function of atomic number and composition. This means that by tailoring a grain's …
Molecular dynamics simulations are performed to provide a detailed understanding of the functional degradation of shape memory alloys at small scale. The origin of the experimentally reported accumulation of plastic deformation and the anomalous sudden increase of the residual strain under cyclic mechanical loading are explained by detailed insights into the relevant atomic scale processes. Our work reveals that the mechanical response of shape-memory-alloy pillars under cyclic compression is significantly influenced by the presence of an amorphous-like surface region as experimentally induced…
Colloidal lead sulfide is a versatile material with great opportunities to tune the bandgap by electronic confinement and to adapt the optical and electrical properties to the target application. We present a new and simple synthetic route to control size and shape of PbS nanoparticles. Increasing concentrations of explicitly added acetic acid are used to tune the shape of PbS nanoparticles from quasi-spherical particles via octahedrons to six-armed stars. The presence of acetate changes the intrinsic surface energies of the different crystal facets and enables the growth along the <100> direc…
Structure of amorphous nangranular composite (Co$_{86}$Nb$_{12}$Ta$_2$)$_x$(SiO$_2$)$_{1-x}$ films was studied by means of grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering as a function of atomic concentration $x$ of the metal fraction in vicinity of the percolation threshold. It has been established that the average size of magnetic nanoparticles increases with $x$ and this increment exhibit the anisotropic character. It was found that in a whole concentration range the particles are elongated along the growth direction perpendicular to the film plane. For the lowest concentration $x=0.193$ clu…
We present here the results of our density-functional-theory-based calculations of the electronic and geometric structures and energetics of Se and O adsorption on Ru 93- and 105-atom nanoparticles. These studies have been inspired by the fact that Se/Ru nanoparticles are considered promising electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on the direct methanol fuel cell cathodes and the oxygen binding energy is a descriptor for the catalyst activity towards this reaction. We find the character of chemical bonding of Se on a flat nanoparticle facet to be ionic, similar to that obtain…
Coalescence (or Growth) of tiny particles to larger particles has been an exciting and practical research topic in nanotechnology. This study deals with development of gold particles at varying precursor concentration in a custom-built setup. Under the tuned ratio of bipolar pulse OFF to ON time, tiny particles of different sizes and shapes develop depending on the amount of gold precursor. When compact monolayer assembly is formed on solution surface, nano energy in packet shapes bind gold atoms in own shape. Between 0.07 mM to 0.90 mM precursor concentration, tiny particles develop in both t…
In this work, we proposed new shape nanoparticles in the name of supershape nanoparticles by manipulation in the morphology of a disk nanoparticle. The electric field distribution of supershape nanoparticles were investigated at resonance wavelength of particle plasmons. The effects of dispersed medium and different sensory materials on particle plasmons were reported. The obtained results showed that there exist the multiple plasmonics modes in supershape nanoparticles. We found that the high sensitivity factor is available in the supershape nanoparticles. This study can be a base for the cha…
We study the ground state and magnetic hysteresis properties of 2$d$ arrays ($L^{}_x\times L^{}_y$) of dipolar interacting magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) by performing micromagnetic simulations. Our primary interest is to understand the effect of sample shape, $Θ$- the ratio of the dipolar strength to the anisotropy strength, and the direction of the applied field $\vec{H} = H_{o}\hat{e}^{}_H$ on the ground state and the magnetic hysteresis in an array of MNPs. To study the effect of shape of the sample, we have varied the aspect ratio $A^{}_r=L^{}_y/L^{}_x$ which in turn, is found to induce sh…
Shape-controlled synthesis of multiply twinned nanostructures is heavily emphasized in nanoscience, in large part due to the desire to control the size, shape, and terminating facets of metal nanoparticles for applications in catalysis. Direct control of the size and shape of solution-grown nanoparticles relies on an understanding of how synthetic parameters alter nanoparticle structures during synthesis. However, while outcome populations can be effectively studied with standard electron microscopy methods, transient structures that appear during some synthetic routes are difficult to study u…
The activity and stability of a platinum nanoparticle (NP) is not only affected by its size but additionally depends on its shape. To this end, simulations can identify structure-property relationships to make a priori decisions on the most promising structures. While activity is routinely probed by electronic structure calculations on simplified surface models, modeling the stability of NP model systems in electrochemical reactions is challenging due to the long timescale of relevant processes such as oxidation beyond the point of reversibility. In this work, a routine for simulating electroc…
