We present a study on the magnetic properties of naked and silica-coated Fe3O4 nanoparticles with sizes between 5 and 110 nm. Their efficiency as heating agents was assessed through specific power absorption (SPA) measurements as a function of particle size and shape. The results show a strong dependence of the SPA with the particle size, with a maximum around 30 nm, as expected for a Neel relaxation mechanism in single-domain particles. The SiO2 shell thickness was found to play an important role in the SPA mechanism by hindering the heat outflow, thus decreasing the heating efficiency. It is concluded that a compromise between good heating efficiency and surface functionality for biomedical purposes can be attained by making the SiO2 functional coating as thin as possible.
Iron-oxide nanoparticles have been synthesized by high temperature arc plasma route with different plasma currents and characterized for their structure, morphology and local atomic order. Fe K-edge x-ray absorption spectra reveal distinct local structure of the samples grown with different plasma currents. We have shown that the local disorder is higher for the higher plasma current grown samples that also have a larger average particle-size. The results provide useful information to control structural and morphological properties of nanoparticles grown by high temperature plasma synthesis pr…
For the first time nanoparticles of CdP2 and CdP4 semiconductors were prepared and studied. The nanoparticles were prepared by incorporation into zeolite Na-X matrix. Absorption and photoluminescence (PL) spectra of CdP2 and CdP4 nanoparticles were measured at the temperature of 77 K. Two bands were observed in both the absorption and PL spectra of CdP2 nanoparticles demonstrating the blue shift from the line of free exciton in bulk crystal. Single band was observed in both the absorption and PL spectra of CdP4 nanoparticles demonstrating the blue shift from the spectra of bulk crystal. We att…
We have studied the magnetic and power absorption properties of a series of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) of Fe3O4 with average sizes <d> ranging from 3 to 26 nm. Heating experiments as a function of particle size revealed a strong increase in the specific power absorption (SPA) values for particles with <d> = 25-30 nm. On the other side saturation magnetization MS values of these MNPs remain essentially constant for particles with <d> above 10 nm, suggesting that the absorption mechanism is not determined by MS. The largest SPA value obtained was 130 W/g, corresponding to a bimodal particle d…
La$_{1.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$NiO$_4$ is well known to have a colossal dielectric constant ($\varepsilon_R>10^7$). The La$_{1.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$NiO$_4$ nanoparticle powder was prepared by a combinational method of solid state reaction and high-energy ball milling. Magnetic measurements show that the material has a very small magnetic moment and paramagnetic characteristic at room temperature. The mixture of the nanoparticle powder (40% vol.) and paraffin (60% vol.) coated in the form of flat layers of different thicknesses ($t$) exhibits strong microwave absorption resonances in the 4-18 GHz range. The refle…
Ultrafast demagnetization in magnetic nanoparticles using pulsed laser has attracted considerable attention because of its potential applications in spintronics, such as data storage. In such applications, it is necessary to control magnetization using low energy laser pulses, however, this poses the problem of increasing the amount of energy from the excitation laser pulses to the spin subsystem. We take advantage of the phenomenon known as localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) to enhance the energy transfer from laser pulses to the spin subsystem. To induce LSPR, hybrid nanoparticles co…
We report spectral features of far infrared electromagnetic radiation absorption in anatase TiO2 nanopowders which we attribute to absorption by acoustic phonon modes of nanoparticles. The frequency of peak excess absorption above the background level corresponds to the predicted frequency of the dipolar acoustic phonon from continuum elastic theory. The intensity of the absorption cannot be accounted for in a continuum elastic dielectric description of the nanoparticle material. Quantum mechanical scale dependent effects must be considered. The absorption cross section is estimated from a sim…
Copper nanoparticles have been grown in silica matrix by annealing of the sol-gel prepared porous matrix impregnated with the copper nitrate. The annealing has been performed in air, successively in air and hydrogen, and in hydrogen. Cu nanoparticles in size range of 2-65 nm have been grown depending on annealing conditions. Annealing in air results in copper oxide nanoparticles (Cu2O) growth as well. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and optical spectroscopy of the copper nanoparticles in silica matrix have been performed. The copper nanoparticles of two types are grown: spherical mature…
High-temperature Cu-Mn-Fe spinel-oxide nanoparticle solar selective absorber coatings are investigated experimentally and theoretically. A reliable, general approach to evaluate absorption coefficient spectra from the optical measurements of the nanoparticle-pigmented coatings is developed based on solving the inverse problem using four-flux-radiative method. The derived absorption properties of NP materials can be directly applied to predict the solar absorptance, optimize the nanoparticle-pigmented coatings, and analyze the thermal degradation, which agree well with the experimental results.…
Donor-modified TiO 2 nanoparticles are interesting hybrid systems shifting the absorption edge of this semiconductor from the ultra-violet to the visible or infrared light spectrum, which is a benefit for several applications ranging from photochemistry, photocatalysis, photovoltaics, or photodynamic therapy. Here, we investigate the absorption properties of two catechol-like molecules, i.e. dopamine and DOPAC ligands, when anchored to a spherical anatase TiO 2 nanoparticle of realistic size (2.2 nm), by means of time-dependent density functional theory calculations. By the differential absorb…
Semiconducting nanoparticles are the building blocks of optical nanodevices as their electronic states, and therefore light absorption and emission, can be controlled by modifying their size and shape. CdSe is perhaps the most studied of these nanoparticles, due to the efficiency of its synthesis, the high quality of the resulting samples, and the fact that the optical gap is in the visible range. In this article, we study light absorption of CdSe nanostructures with sizes up to 1.5 nm within density functional theory. We study both bulk fragments with wurtzite symmetry and novel fullerene-lik…
We have studied the magnetic and power absorption properties of three samples of CoFe2O4 nanoparticles with sizes from 5 to 12 nm prepared by thermal decomposition of Fe (acac)3 and Co(acac)2 at high temperatures. The blocking temperatures TB estimated from magnetization M(T) curves spanned the range 180 < TB < 320 K, reflecting the large magnetocrystalline anisotropy of these nanoparticles. Accordingly, high coercive fields HC \approx 1.4 - 1.7 T were observed at low temperatures. Specific Power Absorption (SPA) experiments carried out in ac magnetic fields indicated that, besides particle vo…
The dependence of the surface plasmons resonance (SPR) frequency on the size of gold nanoparticles (GNPs) is experimentally studied. The measured data for the SPR frequency by UV-Vis spectroscopy and GNPs diameter by Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) are collected in the course of classical citrate GNPs synthesis. The relationship between the GNPs size and the blue shift of the light absorption is presented. They are fitted by an equation with a single free parameter, the dielectric permittivity of the surrounding media. Th…
We have performed measurements of the IR absorption of $\text{SiO}_2$ nanoparticles confined in an argon radio-frequency plasma discharge using an FTIR spectrometer. By varying the gas pressure of the discharge and duty cycle of the applied radio-frequency voltage we observed a shift of the absorption peak of $\text{SiO}_2$. We attributed this shift to charge-dependent absorption features of $\text{SiO}_2$. The charge-dependent shift has been calculated for $\text{SiO}_2$ particles and from comparisons with the experiment the particle charge has been retrieved using our IRPRS (Infrared Phonon …
UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy is frequently used to characterize the size and shape of gold nanoparticles. We present a full-spectrum model that yields reliable results for the commonly encountered case of mixtures of spheres and rods in varying proportions. We determine the volume fractions of the two populations, the aspect ratio distribution of the nanorods (average value and variance) and the interface damping parameter. We validate the model by checking the fit results against small-angle X-ray scattering and transmission electron microscopy data and show that correctly accounting for th…
Anomalous resonances in properly shaped plasmonic nanostructures can in principle lead to infinite absorption/gain efficiencies over broad bandwidths. By developing a closed-form analytical solution for the fields scattered by conjoined semicircles, we outline the fundamental physics behind these phenomena, associated with broadband adiabatic focusing of surface plasmons at the nanoscale. We are able to justify the apparent paradox of finite absorption/gain in the limit of infinitesimally small material loss/gain, and we explore the potential of these phenomena in nonlinear optics, spasing, en…
Electronic structure of nickel nanoparticles encapsulated in carbon was characterized by photoelectron, X-ray absorption, and X-ray emission spectroscopies. Experimental spectra are compared with the density of states calculated in the frame of the density functional theory. The carbon shell of Ni nanoparticles has been found to be multilayer graphene with significant (about 6%) amount of Stone--Wales defects. Results of the experiments evidence protection of the metallic nanoparticles from the environmental degradation by providing a barrier against oxidation at least for two years. Exposure …
We report that for the first time the nanoparticles of II-V semiconductor (ZnP2) were prepared and studied. ZnP2 nanoparticles were prepared by incorporation into zeolite Na-X matrix. Absorption, diffuse reflection (DR) and photoluminescence (PL) spectra of the ZnP2 nanoclusters incorporated into the supercages of zeolite Na-X were measured at the temperature 77 K. Five bands B1-B5 are observed in both the DR and PL spectra demonstrating the blue shift from the line of free exciton in bulk crystal. We attribute the B1-B5 bands to some stable nanoclusters with size less than the size of zeolite…
In the context of magnetic hyperthermia, several physical parameters are used to optimize the heat generation and these include the nanoparticles concentration and the magnitude and frequency of the external AC magnetic field. Here we extend our previous work by computing nonlinear contributions to the specific absorption rate, while taking into account (weak) inter-particle dipolar interactions and DC magnetic field. In the previous work, the latter were shown to enhance the SAR in some specific geometries and setup. We find that the cubic correction to the AC susceptibility does not modify t…
A review of the main phenomena related with the linear optical properties of isolated and supported metal nanoparticles is presented. The extinction, absorption and scattering efficiencies are calculated using the Mie theory and the Discrete Dipole Approximation. The origin of the optical spectra is discussed in terms of the size, shape and environment for each nanoparticle. The main optical features of each nanoparticle are identified, showing the tremendous potentiality of optical spectroscopy as a tool of characterization.
Results obtained from the optical absorption and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy experiments have shown the formation of excitons in the silver-exchanged glass samples. These findings are reported here for the first time. Further, we investigate the dramatic changes in the photoemission properties of the silver-exchanged glass samples as a function of postannealing temperature. Observed changes are thought to be due to the structural rearrangements of silver and oxygen bonding during the heat treatments of the glass matrix. In fact, photoelectron spectroscopy does reveal these chemical tra…
We have studied the optical properties of metallic nanoparticles with arbitrary shape. We performed theoretical calculations of the absorption, extinction and scattering efficiencies, which can be directly compared with experiments, using the Discrete Dipole Approximation (DDA). In this work, the main features in the optical spectra have been investigated depending of the geometry and size of the nanoparticles. The origin of the optical spectra are discussed in terms of the size, shape and material properties of each nanoparticle, showing that a nanoparticle can be distinguish by its optical s…
We address the issue of inter-particle dipolar interactions in the context of magnetic hyperthermia. More precisely, the main question dealt with here is concerned with the conditions under which the specific absorption rate is enhanced or reduced by dipolar interactions. For this purpose, we propose a theory for the calculation of the AC susceptibility, and thereby the specific absorption rate, for a monodisperse two-dimensional assembly of nanoparticles with oriented anisotropy, in the presence of a DC magnetic field, in addition to the AC magnetic field. We also study the competition betwee…
Optical properties of polymer capped gold nanoparticles of various sizes (diameter 3-6 nm) have been studied. We present a new scheme to extract size dependent variation of total dielectric function of gold nanoparticles from measured UV-Vis absorption data. The new scheme can also be used, in principle, for other related systems as well. We show how quantum effect, surface atomic co - ordination and polymer - nanoparticle interface morphology leads to a systematic variation in inter band part of the dielectric function of gold nanoparticles, obtained from the analysis using our new scheme. Ca…
We present theoretical calculations for the absorption properties of protein-coated gold nanoparticles on graphene and graphite substrates. As the substrate is far away from nanoparticles, numerical results show that the number of protein bovine serum molecules molecules aggregating on gold surfaces can be quantitatively determined for gold nanoparticles with arbitrary size by means of the Mie theory and the absorption spectra. The presence of graphitic substrate near protein-conjugated gold nanoparticles substantially enhances the red shift of the surface plasmon resonances of the nanoparticl…
Titanic acid nanotubes (with a chemical formula H2Ti2O4(OH)2, abbreviated as TANTs) were synthesized by the hydrothermal method using commercial TiO2 nanoparticle powder (P25, Degussa, Germany) including anatase and rutile phase as a starting material. Conversion from nanoparticles to nanotubes was achieved by treating the nanoparticle powder with 10 M NaOH aqueous solution. Absorption and photoluminescence (PL) data indicate that the nanotubes obtained under slow and suitable drying and heating conditions had very strong and stable visible absorption with three peaks at 515, 575, and 675 nm a…
We report studies of the Yb$^{3+}$ site distribution in Er$^{3+}$ co-doped upconverting alkaline earth fluoride nanoparticles using high-resolution absorption measurements. Similar to bulk crystals, Yb$^{3+}$ single ion cubic (O$_h$), and preferentially formed clusters are the dominant centres for moderate dopant concentrations. At higher concentrations, and for larger particle sizes, a minority C$_{4v}$(F$^-$) centre is also observed. Furthermore, the behaviour of Yb$^{3+}$ cluster centres, whose primary absorption band is located around 10205 cm$^{-1}$ (in near resonance with 980 nm laser di…
We report size-dependent melting of spherical copper nanoparticles embedded into silica matrix. Based on the temperature dependence of the surface plasmon resonance energy and its width we observe two distinct melting regimes. For particles smaller than 20 nm the absorption spectrum changes monotonically with the temperature, and this allows us to assume the gradual solid-liquid phase transition (melting) of the nanoparticles or existence of superheated solid nanoparticles. In contrast, for nanoparticles larger than 20 nm, we observe a jump-like increase of the bandwidth and non-monotonic depe…
Assemblies of closely separated gold nanoparticles exhibit a strong collective plasmonic response due to coupling of the plasmon modes of the individual nanostructures. In the context of self-assembly of nanoparticles, closed packed 2D clusters of spherical nanoparticles present an important composite system that promises numerous applications. The present study probes the collective plasmonic characteristics and resulting photothermal behavior of closed packed 2D Au nanoparticle clusters in order to delineate the effects of cluster size, inter-particle distance and particle size. Smaller nano…
We report on novel ferrogels derived from polysaccharides (sodium alginate and chitosan) with embedded iron oxide nanoparticles synthesized in situ and their combination with thermally responsive poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) for externally-driven drug release using AC magnetic fields. Samples were characterized by Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and magnetic measurements. The obtained nanoparticles were found to be of ca. 10 nm average size, showing magnetic properties very close to those of the bulk material. The thermal response was measured by power absorption exp…

After a brief description of the main synthesis approaches and the core/shell structural-morphological characterization, the basic static and dynamic magnetic properties are presented. Five different types of perspective applications, based on diverse patents and research articles, are described: permanent magnets, recording media, microwave absorption, biomedical applications and other applications. We have investigated the spin and orbital magnetic moments of Fe in FePt nanoparticles in the $L$1$_{0}$-ordered phase coated with SiO$_{2}$ by x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements at the Fe $L_{\rm 2,3}$ absorption edges. Using XMCD sum rules, we evaluated the ratio of the orbital magnetic moment ($M_{\rm orb}$) to the spin magnetic moment ($M_{\rm spin}$) of Fe to be $M_{\rm orb}/M_{\rm spin}$ = 0.08. This $M_{\rm orb}/M_{\rm spin}$ value is comparable to the value (0.09) obtained for FePt nanoparticles prepared by gas phase condensati…
The present paper deals with the systematic growth of plasmonic gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) on molybdenum disulphide (MoS$_2$) nanosheets as well as the effect of Au NPs on the optical and magnetic properties. The crystalline nature of the nanocomposites is confirmed by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopic techniques. The optical properties are characterized using absorption and Raman spectroscopic techniques. The electron paramagnetic resonance technique is used to study the magnetic response of the nanocomposites. The paper attempts to gain a fundamental understanding of t…
Using microemulsion methods, CoO-Pt core-shell nanoparticles (NPs), with diameters of nominally 4 nm, were synthesized and characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and a suite of x-ray spectroscopies, including diffraction (XRD), absorption (XAS), absorption near-edge structure (XANES), and extended absorption fine structure (EXAFS), which confirmed the existence of CoO cores and pure Pt surface layers. Using a commercial magnetometer, the ac and dc magnetic properties were investigated over a range of temperature (2 K $\leq$ T $\leq$ 300 K), magnetic field ($\…
Optical properties of ZnO nanoparticles prepared from a simple chemical method using sodium zincate bath show strong white light emission. X-ray absorption fine structure studies reveal a completely different local environment around Zn in these ZnO nanoparticles. The observed luminescence properties and local structural changes have been explained on the basis of a linkage between Zn and OH- ions in the surface layers of ZnO nanoparticles.
The magnetic behaviour of nanoparticles of antiferromagnetic ferritin, with a mean Fe loading of 410 atoms per core, has been investigated by 57Fe Mossbauer absorption spectroscopy down to very low temperature (34mK). In previous experi- ments of frequency dependent magnetic susceptibility and magnetic noise performed at 25mK in similar samples, it was claimed that a resonance at a frequency of about 10**8 Hz, due to a macroscopic coherent state, had been observed. However, our search of incoherent tunnel fluctuations around 10**8 Hz using 57Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy, whose "window" of measure…
We numerically study light scattering and absorption in self-similar aggregates of dielectric nanoparticles, as generated by simulated ballistic deposition upon a surface starting from a single seed particle. The resulting structure exhibits a complex tree-like shape, intended to mimic the morphologic properties of building blocks of real nanostructured thin films produced by means of fine controlled physical deposition processes employed in nanotechnology. The relationship of scattering and absorption cross sections to morphology is investigated within a computational scheme which thoroughly …
We report on the preparation of hydrogenated amorphous carbon nano-particles whose spectral characteristics include an absorption band at 217.5 nm with the profile and characteristics of the interstellar 217.5 nm feature. Vibrational spectra of these particles also contain the features commonly observed in absorption and emission from dust in the diffuse interstellar medium. These materials are produced under slow deposition conditions by minimizing the flux of incident carbon atoms and by reducing surface mobility. The initial chemistry leads to the formation of carbon chains, together with a…
We investigate the impact of water, a polar solvent, on the optical absorption of prototypical silicon clusters with oxygen passivation. We approach this complex problem by assessing the contributions of three factors: chemical reactivity; thermal equilibration and dielectric screening. We find that the silanone (Si=O) functional group is not chemically stable in the presence of water and exclude this as a source of significant red shift in absorption in aqueous environments. We perform first principles molecular dynamics simulations of the solvation of an oxygenated silicon cluster with expli…

The saturation magnetization and coercivity were obtained 172 emu/g and 268 Oe at 300 K, respectively. The heat elevation of the FeCo magnetic colloid was measured under alternating magnetic fields of 76, 102, and 127 Oe with selectable frequencies of 190, 250 a…
Gallium is a plasmonic material offering ultraviolet to near-infrared tunability, facile and scalable preparation, and good stability of nanoparticles. In our contribution, we experimentally demonstrate the link between the shape and size of individual gallium nanoparticles and their optical properties. To this end, we utilize scanning transmission electron microscopy combined with electron energy loss spectroscopy. Lens-shaped gallium nanoparticles with a diameter between 10 nm and 200 nm were grown directly on a silicon nitride membrane using an in-house developed effusion cell operated at u…
We report on the magnetic hyperthermia properties of chemically synthesized ferromagnetic 11 and 16 nm Fe(0) nanoparticles of cubic shape displaying the saturation magnetization of bulk iron. The specific absorption rate measured on 16 nm nanocubes is 1690+-160 W/g at 300 kHz and 66 mT. This corresponds to specific losses-per-cycle of 5.6 mJ/g, largely exceeding the ones reported in other systems. A way to quantify the degree of optimization of any system with respect to hyperthermia applications is proposed. Applied here, this method shows that our nanoparticles are not fully optimized, proba…
We present a detailed analytical theory for the plasmonic nanoring configuration first proposed in [A. Alu, A. Salandrino, N. Engheta, Opt. Expr. 14, 1557 (2006)], which is shown to provide negative magnetic permeability and negative index of refraction at infrared and optical frequencies. We show analytically how the nanoring configuration may provide superior performance when compared to some other solutions for optical negative index materials, offering a more 'pure' magnetic response at these high frequencies, which is necessary for lowering the effects of radiation losses and absorption. …
We report on the role of plasmonic resonances in determining the delicate balance between scattering and absorption of light in nanometric particle arrays applied to the front surface of solar cells. Strong parasitic absorption is shown to be dependent upon the excitation of localized surface plasmon resonances and prohibits efficient scattering into the underlying semiconductor. Via detailed analytical and numerical investigations we obtain the dependence of scattering and absorption in nanoparticles upon their complex refractive index. These results provide an insight into the optimum materi…
