Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over a field $k$. Let $R:= \text{End}\, E$. There is a functor $\mathscr{H}\!\!\mathit{om}_R(-,E)$ from the category of finitely presented torsion-free left $R$-modules to the category of abelian varieties isogenous to a power of $E$, and a functor $\text{Hom}(-,E)$ in the opposite direction. We prove necessary and sufficient conditions on $E$ for these functors to be equivalences of categories.
Given an elliptic curve $E/k$ and a Galois extension $k'/k$, we construct an exact functor from torsion-free modules over the endomorphism ring ${\rm End}(E_{k'})$ with a semilinear ${\rm Gal}(k'/k)$ action to abelian varieties over $k$ that are $k'$-isogenous to a power of $E$. As an application, we show that every elliptic curve with complex multiplication geometrically is isogenous over the ground field to one with complex multiplication by a maximal order.
Two abelian varieties $A_1, A_2$ over a number field $K$ are called strongly iso-Kummerian if the torsion fields $K(A_1[d])$ and $K(A_2[d])$ coincide for all $d \geq 1$. For all $g \geq 4$ we construct geometrically simple, strongly iso-Kummerian $g$-dimensional abelian varieties over number fields that are not geometrically isogenous. We also discuss related examples and put significant constraints on any further iso-Kummerian pair.
In this paper we give a module-theoretic description of the isomorphism classes of abelian varieties $A$ isogenous to $B^r$, where the characteristic polynomial $g$ of Frobenius of $B$ is an ordinary square-free $q$-Weil polynomial, for a power $q$ of a prime $p$, or a square-free $p$-Weil polynomial with no real roots. Under some extra assumptions on the polynomial $g$ we give an explicit description of all the isomorphism classes which can be computed in terms of fractional ideals of an order in a finite product of number fields. In the ordinary case, we also give a module-theoretic descript…
Let Z be a subvariety of the moduli space of principally polarised abelian varieties of dimension g over the complex numbers. Suppose that Z contains a Zariski dense set of points which correspond to abelian varieties from a single isogeny class. A generalisation of a conjecture of André and Pink predicts that Z is a weakly special subvariety. We prove this when dim Z = 1 using the Pila--Zannier method and the Masser--Wüstholz isogeny theorem. This generalises results of Edixhoven and Yafaev when the Hecke orbit consists of CM points and of Pink when it consists of Galois generic points.
Investigating a conjecture of Zannier, we study irreducible subvarieties of abelian schemes that dominate the base and contain a Zariski dense set of torsion points that lie on pairwise isogenous fibers. If everything is defined over the algebraic numbers and the abelian scheme has maximal variation, we prove that the geometric generic fiber of such a subvariety is a union of torsion cosets. We go on to prove fully or partially explicit versions of this result in fibered powers of the Legendre family of elliptic curves. Finally, we apply a recent result of Galateau-Martínez to obtain uniform b…
We investigate to what extent an abelian variety over a finite field can be lifted to one in characteristic zero with small Mumford-Tate group. We prove that supersingular abelian surfaces, respectively threefolds, can be lifted to ones isogenous to a square, respectively product, of elliptic curves. On the other hand, we show that supersingular abelian threefolds cannot be lifted to one isogenous to the cube of an elliptic curve over the Witt vectors.
From the product of two elliptic curves, Shioda and Inose constructed an elliptic $K3$ surface having two $\mathrm{II}^*$ fibers. Its Mordell-Weil lattice structure depends on the morphisms between the two elliptic curves. In this paper, we give a method of writing down generators of the Mordell-Weil lattice of such elliptic surfaces when two elliptic curves are $3$-isogenous. In particular, we obtain a basis of the Mordell-Weil lattice for the singular $K3$ surfaces $X_{[3,3,3]}$, $X_{[3,2,3]}$ and $X_{[3,0,3]}$.
Let $K$ be a field of characteristic different from $2$, $\bar{K}$ its algebraic closure. Let $n \ge 3$ be an odd integer. Let $f(x)$ and $h(x)$ be degree $n$ polynomials with coefficients in $K$ and without repeated roots. Let us consider genus $(n-1)/2$ hyperelliptic curves $C_f: y^2=f(x)$ and $C_h: y^2=h(x)$, and their jacobians $J(C_f)$ and $J(C_h)$, which are $(n-1)/2$-dimensional abelian varieties defined over $K$. Suppose that one of the polynomials is irreducible and the other splits completely over $K$. We prove that if $J(C_f)$ and $J(C_h)$ are isogenous over $\bar{K}$ then there is …
In recent years there has been an interest in constructing examples of closed Riemann surfaces whose jacobian varieties are isogenous to a product of many elliptic factors and some other jacobian varieties. The first ones, provided by Ekedahl and Serre, are examples for which the isogenous decomposition has all factors being elliptic curves. It is well known that given two elliptic curves $E_{1}$ and $E_{2}$, there is a closed Riemann surface $X$ of genus two, with equations in terms of the elliptic curves, and whose jacobian variety $JX$ is isogenous to $E_{1} \times E_{2}$. In this paper, gi…
In this paper we consider the question of when all Seshadri constants on a product of two isogenous elliptic curves $E_1\times E_2$ without complex multiplication are integers. By studying elliptic curves on $E_1\times E_2$ we translate this question into a purely numerical problem expressed by quadratic forms. By solving that problem, we show that all Seshadri constants on $E_1\times E_2$ are integers if and only if the minimal degree of an isogeny $E_1\to E_2$ equals 1 or 2. Furthermore, this method enables a characterization of irreducible principal polarizations on $E_1\times E_2$.
Let p:C-->Y be a covering of smooth, projective curves which is a composition of π:C-->C' of degree 2 and g:C'-->Y of degree n. Let f:X-->Y be the covering of degree 2^n, where the curve X parametrizes the liftings in C^{(n)} of the fibers of g:C'-->Y. Let P(X,δ) be the associated Prym-Tyurin variety, known to be isogenous to the Prym variety P(C,C'). Most of the results in the paper focus on calculating the polarization type of the restriction of the canonical polarization of JX on P(X,δ). We obtain the polarization type when n=3. When Y=P^1 we conjecture that P(X,δ) is isomorphic to the dual…
Let $K$ be a field of characteristic different from $2$, $\bar{K}$ its algebraic closure. Let $n \ge 3$ be an odd prime such that $2$ is a primitive root modulo $n$. Suppose that one of the polynomials is irreducible and the other reducible. We prove that if $J(C_f)$ and $J(C_h)$ are isogenous ove…
We show that Albanese varieties of abelian covers of projective plane are isogenous to product of isogeny components of abelian varieties associated with singularities of the ramification locus. In particular Albanese varieties of abelian covers of projective plane ramified over arrangements of lines and uniformized by unit ball are isogenous to a product of Jacobians of Fermat curves. Periodicity of the sequence of (semi-abelian) Albanese varieties of unramified cyclic covers of complements to a plane singular curve is shown.
We describe the isotypical decomposition of the Jacobian variety JW of the Galois extension W-->T of any fourfold cover of smooth connected irreducible projective complex curves X-->T, in terms of Prym's of intermediate covers. We also compute the degree of the isogenies involved and as a result we obtain new proofs of the bigonal and trigonal constructions. Furthermore, we give examples of families of Jacobians isogenous to a product of Jacobians and of families of Prym varieties isogenous to the product of elliptic curves.
Given a fixed product of non-isogenous abelian varieties at least one of which is general, we show how to construct complete families of indecomposable abelian varieties whose very general fiber is isogenous to the given product and whose connected monodromy group is a product of symplectic groups or is a unitary group. As a consequence, we show how to realize any product of symplectic groups of total rank $g$ as the connected monodromy group of a complete family of $g'$-dimensional abelian varieties for any $g'\ge g$. These methods also yield a construction of a new Kodaira fibration with fib…
Faltings in 1983 proved that a necessary and sufficient condition for two abelian varieties $A$ and $B$ to be isogenous over a number field $K$ is that the local factors of the L-series of $A$ and $B$ are equal for almost all primes of $K$ ; for each such prime this implies that $A$ and $B$ have the same number of points over the residue field. We show in this article that for abelian varieties faithfully of type GSp (a class containing the abelian varieties with endomorphism ring $\mathbb{Z}$ and of odd dimension) `having the same number of points' may be replaced by `the number of points hav…
This paper studies a class of Abelian varieties that are of $\GL_2$-type and with isogenous classes defined over a number field $k$. We treat the cases when their endomorphism algebras are either (1) a totally real field $K$ or (2) a totally indefinite quaternion algebra over a totally real field $K$. Among the isogenous class of such an Abelian variety, we identify one whose Galois conjugates can be described in terms of actions of Atkin-Lehner operators and the class group of $K$. Thus we deduce that such Abelian varieties are parametrised by finite quotients of certain PEL Shimura varieties…
To a pair of elliptic curves, one can naturally attach two K3 surfaces: the Kummer surface of their product and a double cover of it, called the Inose surface. They have prominently featured in many interesting constructions in algebraic geometry and number theory. There are several more associated elliptic K3 surfaces, obtained through base change of the Inose surface; these have been previously studied by Kuwata. We give an explicit description of the geometric Mordell-Weil groups of each of these elliptic surfaces in the generic case (when the elliptic curves are non-isogenous). In the non-…
We prove two theorems concerning isogenies of elliptic curves over function fields. The first one describes the variation of the height of the $j$-invariant in an isogeny class. The second one is an "isogeny estimate", providing an explicit bound on the degree of a minimal isogeny between two isogenous elliptic curves. We also give several corollaries of these two results.
In this note we show that if an abelian variety possesses a Galois embedding into some projective space, then it must be isogenous to the self product of an elliptic curve. We prove moreover that the self product of an elliptic curve always has infinitely many Galois embeddings.
We give an efficient, deterministic algorithm to decide if two abelian varieties over a number field are isogenous. From this, we derive an algorithm to compute the endomorphism ring of an elliptic curve over a number field.
We show that any polarized abelian variety over a finite field is covered by a Jacobian whose dimension is bounded by an explicit constant. We do this by first proving an effective version of Poonen's Bertini theorem over finite fields, which allows us to show the existence of smooth curves arising as hypersurface sections of bounded degree and genus. Additionally, we show that for simple abelian varieties a better bound is possible. As an application of these results we show that if $E$ is an elliptic curve over a finite field then for any $n\in \mathbb{N}$ there exist smooth curves of bounde…
In this paper, we associate canonically to every imaginary quadratic field $K=\Bbb Q(\sqrt{-D})$ one or two isogenous classes of CM abelian varieties over $K$, depending on whether $D$ is odd or even ($D \ne 4$). These abelian varieties are characterized as of smallest dimension and smallest conductor, and such that the abelian varieties themselves descend to $\Bbb Q$. When $D$ is odd or divisible by 8, they are the `canonical' ones first studied by Gross and Rohrlich. We prove that these abelian varieties have the striking property that the vanishing order of their $L$-function at the center …
We show that every connected commutative algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0 is the Picard variety of some projective variety, obtained by pinching a smooth variety along a finite subscheme. In contrast, no Witt group of dimension at least 3 over a perfect field of prime characteristic is isogenous to the Picard variety obtained by this construction.
An abelian variety defined over an algebraically closed field k of positive characteristic is supersingular if it is isogenous to a product of supersingular elliptic curves and is superspecial if it is isomorphic to a product of supersingular elliptic curves. In this paper, the superspecial condition is generalized by defining the superspecial rank of an abelian variety, which is an invariant of its p-torsion. The main results in this paper are about the superspecial rank of supersingular abelian varieties and Jacobians of curves. For example, it turns out that the superspecial rank determines…
In his previous papers (Math. Res. Letters 7 (2000), 123--13; Progress in Math. 195 (2001), 473--490; Math. Res. Letters 8 (2001), 429--435; Moscow Math. J. 2 (2002), issue 2, 403-431; Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 131 (2003), no. 1, 95--102) the author introduced certain explicit constructions of hyperelliptic jacobians without nontrivial endomorphisms. In the present paper we discuss when these jacobians are mutually non-isogenous. In addition, a special case ($n=m=3$) of our Theorem 1.2 provides the following criterion for elliptic curves $C_f: y^2=f(x)$ and $C_h: y^2=h(x)$ to be non-isogenous. (H…
We show that under the assumption of Artin's Primitive Root Conjecture, for all primes p there exist ordinary elliptic curves over $\bar F_p(x)$ with arbitrary high rank and constant j-invariant. For odd primes p, this result follows from a theorem which states that whenever p is a generator of (Z/ell Z)^*/<-1> (ell an odd prime) there exists a hyperelliptic curve over $\bar F_p$ whose Jacobian is isogenous to a power of one ordinary elliptic curve.
We describe a framework for constructing an efficient non-interactive key exchange (NIKE) protocol for n parties for any n >= 2. Our approach is based on the problem of computing isogenies between isogenous elliptic curves, which is believed to be difficult. We do not obtain a working protocol because of a missing step that is currently an open mathematical problem. What we need to complete our protocol is an efficient algorithm that takes as input an abelian variety presented as a product of isogenous elliptic curves, and outputs an isomorphism invariant of the abelian variety. Our framework …
A closed Riemann surface $S$ is called a generalized Fermat curve of type $(p,n)$, where $p,n \geq 2$ are integers, if it admits a group $H \cong {\mathbb Z}_{p}^{n}$ of conformal automorphisms so that $S/H$ is an orbifold of genus zero with exactly $n+1$ cone points, each one of order $p$. It is known that $S$ is a fiber product of $(n-1)$ classical Fermat curves of degree $p$ and, for $(p-1)(n-1)>2$, that it is a non-hyperelliptic Riemann surface. In this paper, assuming $p$ to be a prime integer, we provide a decomposition, up to isogeny, of the Jacobian variety $JS$ as a product of Jacobia…
Let E and E' be two elliptic curves over a number field. We prove that the reductions of E and E' at a finite place p are geometrically isogenous for infinitely many p, and draw consequences for the existence of supersingular primes. This result is an analogue for distributions of Frobenius traces of known results on the density of Noether-Lefschetz loci in Hodge theory. The proof relies on dynamical properties of the Hecke correspondences on the modular curve.
We show that any derived equivalent smooth, projective varieties of dimension 3 over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ have equal zeta functions. This result is an application of the extension to smooth, projective varieties over any field of Popa and Schnell's proof that derived equivalent smooth, projective varieties over $\mathbb{C}$ have isogenous Albanese torsors; this result is proven in an appendix by Achter, Casalaina-Martin, Honigs and Vial.
We show that for all odd primes $p$, there exist ordinary elliptic curves over $\bar{\mathbb{F}}_p(x)$ with arbitrarily high rank and constant $j$-invariant. This shows in particular that there are elliptic curves with arbitrarily high rank over these fields for which the corresponding elliptic surface is not supersingular. The result follows from a theorem which states that for all odd prime numbers $p$ and $\ell$, there exists a hyperelliptic curve over $\bar{\mathbb{F}}_p$ of genus $(\ell-1)/2$ whose Jacobian is isogenous to the power of one ordinary elliptic curve.
It is well known that the Prym variety of an étale cyclic covering of a hyperelliptic curve is isogenous to the product of two Jacobians. Moreover, if the degree of the covering is odd or congruent to 2 mod 4, then the canonical isogeny is an isomorphism. We compute the degree of this isogeny in the remaining cases and show that only in the case of coverings of degree 4 it is an isomorphism.
Let $K$ be a number field and $E_1, \ldots, E_n$ be elliptic curves over $K$, pairwise non-isogenous over $\overline{K}$ and without complex multiplication over $\overline{K}$. We study the image of the adelic representation of the absolute Galois group of $K$ naturally attached to $E_1 \times \cdots \times E_n$. The main result is an explicit bound for the index of this image in $\left\{ (x_1,\ldots,x_n) \in \operatorname{GL}_2(\hat{\mathbb{Z}})^n \bigm\vert \det x_i = \det x_j \;\; \forall i,j \right\}$.
We prove that the geometric Bogomolov conjecture for any abelian varieties is reduced to that for nowhere degenerate abelian varieties with trivial trace. In particular, the geometric Bogomolov conjecture holds for abelian varieties whose maximal nowhere degenerate abelian subvariety is isogenous to a constant abelian variety. To prove the results, we investigate closed subvarieties of abelian schemes over constant varieties, where constant varieties are varieties over a function field which can be defined over the constant field of the function field.
We construct certain elements in the integral motivic cohomology group $H^3_{\cal M}(E \times E',\Q(2))_{\ZZ}$, where $E$ and $E'$ are elliptic curves over $\Q$. When $E$ is not isogenous to $E'$ these elements are analogous to `cyclotomic units' in real quadratic fields as they come from modular parametrisations of the elliptic curves. We then find an analogue of the class number formula for real quadratic fields. Finally we use the Beilinson conjectures for $E \times E'$ to deduce them for products of $n$ elliptic curves. A certain amount of this paper is expository in nature.
In this paper we prove that the Prym map, from the space of double coverings of a curve of genus g with r branch points to the moduli space of abelian varieties, is generically injective if r>6 and g>1, r=6 and g>2, r=4 and g>4, r=2 and g>5. We also show that a very generic Prym variety of dimension at least 4 is not isogenous to a Jacobian.
Let $\mathcal X$ be a genus 2 curve defined over a field $K$, $\mbox{char} K = p \geq 0$, and $\mbox{Jac} (\mathcal X, ι)$ its Jacobian, where $ι$ is the principal polarization of $\mbox{Jac} (\mathcal X)$ attached to $\mathcal X$. Assume that $\mbox{Jac} (\mathcal X)$ is $(n, n)$- geometrically reducible with $E_1$ and $E_2$ its elliptic components. We prove that there are only finitely many curves $\mathcal X$ (up to isomorphism) defined over $K$ such that $E_1$ and $E_2$ are $N$-isogenous for $n=2$ and $N=2,3, 5, 7$ with $\mbox{Aut} (\mbox{Jac} \mathcal X )\cong V_4$ or $n = 2$, $N = 3,5, 7…
Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over a number field $K$. The number of torsion points that are rational over a finite extension $L$ is bounded polynomially in terms of the degree $[L:K]$ of $L$ over $K$. Under the following three conditions, we compute the optimal exponent for this bound, in terms of the dimension of abelian subvarieties and their endomorphism rings. The three hypothesis are the following: $(1)$ $A$ is geometrically isogenous to a product of simple abelian varieties of type I, II or III, according to the Albert classification; $(2)$ $A$ is of "Lefschetz type", that is, t…
The first part surveys the push forward formula for elliptic class and various applications obtained in the papers by L.Borisov and the author. In the remaining part we discuss the ring of quasi-Jacobi forms which allow to characterize the functions which are the elliptic genera of almost complex manifolds and extension of Ochanine elliptic genus to certain singular real algebraic varieties.
We show how non-vanishing of p-adic L functions controls the dimensions of Selmer varieties associated to the complement of the origin in an elliptic curve with CM. As a corollary, one obtains a π_1-proof of the theorem of Siegel for such curves.
We formulate a conjecture for semiabelian varieties A over number fields that includes both the Mordell-Lang conjecture (now proven) and the Bogomolov conjecture. We prove the "Mordellic" (finitely generated) part of the conjecture when A is isogenous to the product of an abelian variety and a torus. The proof makes use of the Mordell-Lang conjecture, the Bogomolov conjecture, and an equidistribution theorem.
We determine the limiting distribution of the normalized Euler factors of an abelian surface A defined over a number field k when A is isogenous to the square of an elliptic curve defined over k with complex multiplication. As an application, we prove the Sato-Tate Conjecture for Jacobians of Q-twists of the curves y^2=x^5-x and y^2=x^6+1, which give rise to 18 of the 34 possibilities for the Sato-Tate group of an abelian surface defined over Q. With twists of these two curves one encounters, in fact, all of the 18 possibilities for the Sato-Tate group of an abelian surface that is isogenous t…
Let $E_λ$ be the Legendre elliptic curve of equation $Y^2=X(X-1)(X-λ)$. We recently proved that, given $n$ linearly independent points $P_1(λ), \dots,P_n(λ)$ on $E_λ$ with coordinates in $\bar{\mathbb{Q}(λ)}$, there are at most finitely many complex numbers $λ_0$ such that the points $P_1(λ_0), \dots,P_n(λ_0)$ satisfy two independent relations on $E_{λ_0}$. In this article we continue our investigations on Unlikely Intersections in families of abelian varieties and consider the case of a curve in a product of two non-isogenous families of elliptic curves and in a family of split semi-abelian v…
We compare the asymptotic grows of the number of rational points on modular varieties of D-elliptic sheaves over finite fields to the grows of their Betti numbers as the degree of the level tends to infinity. This is a generalization to higher dimensions of a well-known result for modular curves. As a consequence of the main result, we also produce a new asymptotically optimal sequence of curves.
