We show that quantum Hall states on surfaces with conical singularities behave as conformal primaries near the singular points, with a conformal dimension controlled by the gravitational anomaly. We show that the electronic fluid at the cone tip possesses an intrinsic angular momentum equal to the conformal dimension, in units of the Planck constant. Finally, we argue that the gravitational anomaly also controls { the fine structure of electronic density at the tip, and } the exchange statistics of cones in the Laughlin states, arising from adiabatically braiding conical singularities. Thus, the gravitational anomaly, which appears as a finite size correction on smooth surfaces, dominates geometric transport on singular surfaces.
We use the conformal bootstrap program to derive necessary conditions for emergent symmetry enhancement from discrete symmetry (e.g. $\mathbb{Z}_n$) to continuous symmetry (e.g. $U(1)$) under the renormalization group flow. In three dimensions, in order for $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry to be enhanced to $U(1)$ symmetry, the conformal bootstrap program predicts that the scaling dimension of the order parameter field at the infrared conformal fixed point must satisfy $Δ_1 > 1.08$. We also obtain the similar conditions for $\mathbb{Z}_3$ symmetry with $Δ_{1} > 0.580$ and $\mathbb{Z}_4$ symmetry with $…
Quantum Hall matrix models are simple, solvable quantum mechanical systems which capture the physics of certain fractional quantum Hall states. Recently, it was shown that the Hall viscosity can be extracted from the matrix model for Laughlin states. Here we extend this calculation to the matrix models for a class of non-Abelian quantum Hall states. These states, which were previously introduced by Blok and Wen, arise from the conformal blocks of Wess-Zumino-Witten conformal field theory models. We show that the Hall viscosity computed from the matrix model coincides with a result of Read, in …
Recently, the steady states of non-unitary free fermion dynamics are found to exhibit novel critical phases with power-law squared correlations and a logarithmic subsystem entanglement. In this work, we theoretically understand the underlying physics by constructing solvable static/Brownian quadratic Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev chains with non-Hermitian dynamics. We find the action of the replicated system generally shows (one or infinite copies of) ${O(2)\times O(2)}$ symmetries, which is broken to ${O(2)}$ by the saddle-point solution. This leads to an emergent conformal field theory of the Goldstone …
We consider a two dimensional (2D) model of particles interacting in a Landau level. We work in a finite disk geometry and take the particles to interact with a linearly decreasing two-body Haldane pseudo-potential. We show that the ground state subspace of this model is spanned by the wave-functions that can be written as polynomial conformal blocks (of an arbitrary conformal field theory) consistent with the filling fraction (scaling dimension). To remove degeneracies, we then add a quadratic perturbation to the Hamiltonian and show that; 1. Conformal blocks constructed using the Moore-Read …
The classic composite fermion field theory (Ref. 1) builds up an excellent framework to uniformly study important physical objects and globally explain anomalous experimental phenomena in fractional quantum Hall physics while there are also inherent weaknesses. We present a nonperturbative emergent Dirac fermion theory from this strongly correlated composite fermion field theory, which overcomes these serious long-standing shortcomings. The particle-hole symmetry of Dirac equation resolves this particle-hole symmetry enigma in the composite fermion field theory. With the help of presented nume…
We consider a model of spinful fermions on the triangular lattice which exhibits a C=2 Chern insulator (CI) phase with a quantized anomalous Hall effect, sandwiched between two normal insulator (NI) phases. The first NI-CI quantum phase transition is driven by simultaneous mass inversion of a pair of Dirac fermions, with short range interactions being perturbatively irrelevant. The second CI-NI transition is driven by a single quadratic band touching point protected by momentum space topology and C_6 lattice symmetry. A one-loop renormalization group analysis shows that short range interaction…
The study of electronic and magnetic properties of kagome lattice has been an active research area searching for topological phases of matters. In particular, the kagome system with transition metal stannides and etc exhibit interesting anomalous Hall effects driven by ferromagnetic or non-collinear magnetic ordering. In this paper, motivated by these pioneer works, we study strongly correlated spin-orbit coupled electrons in kagome lattice at 1/3 filling. Using both Hartree-Fock approach and effective model analysis, we report quantum phase transitions accompanied with distinct charge and mag…
Fractional quantum Hall (FQH) system at Landau level filling fraction $ν=5/2$ has long been suggested to be non-Abelian, either Pfaffian (Pf) or antiPfaffian (APf) states by numerical studies, both with quantized Hall conductance $σ_{xy}=5e^2/2h$. Thermal Hall conductances of the Pf and APf states are quantized at $κ_{xy}=7/2$ and $κ_{xy}=3/2$ respectively in a proper unit. However, a recent experiment shows the thermal Hall conductance of $ν=5/2$ FQH state is $κ_{xy}=5/2$. It has been speculated that the system contains random Pf and APf domains driven by disorders, and the neutral chiral Maj…
Carrier doping to the Mott insulator is essential to produce highly correlated metals with emergent properties. Pyrochlore ruthenates, Pr$_{2}$Ru$_{2}$O$_{7}$ (Ru-$4d$ electron number, $n=4$) and Ca$_{2}$Ru$_{2}$O$_{7}$ ($n=3$), are a Mott insulator and a magnetic bad metal, respectively, due to the strong electron correlation. We investigate magneto-transport properties of (Pr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$)$_{2}$Ru$_{2}$O$_{7}$ in a whole band-filling range, $0<x<1$. With increasing hole-doping $x$, the system undergoes an insulator-metal transition. When Ca$_{2}$Ru$_{2}$O$_{7}$ is doped with electrons ($0…
We show that model states of fractional quantum Hall fluids at all experimentally detected plateau can be uniquely determined by imposing translational invariance with a particular scheme of Hilbert space truncation motivated from physical local measurements. The scheme allows us to identify filling factors, topological shifts and pairing/clustering of topological quantum fluids unambiguously in a universal way without resorting to microscopic Hamiltonians. This prompts us to propose the notion of emergent commensurability as a fundamental property for at least most of the known FQH states, wh…
We consider gapped fractional quantum Hall states on the lowest Landau level when the Coulomb energy is much smaller than the cyclotron energy. We introduce two spectral densities, ρ_T(ω) and \bar ρ_T(ω), which are proportional to the probabilities of absorption of circularly polarized gravitons by the quantum Hall system. We prove three sum rules relating these spectral densities with the shift S, the q^4 coefficient of the static structure factor S_4, and the high-frequency shear modulus of the ground state μ_\infty, which is precisely defined. We confirm an inequality, first suggested by Ha…
We study the origin of Lorentz force on the spinons in a U(1) spin liquid. We are inspired by the previous observation of gauge field correlation in the pairwise spin correlation using the neutron scattering measurement when the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction intertwines with the lattice geometry. We extend this observation to the Lorentz force that exerts on the (neutral) spinons. The external magnetic field, that polarizes the spins, effectively generates an internal U(1) gauge flux for the spinons and twists the spinon motion through the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Such a mechanis…
Experiments studying renormalization group flows in the quantum Hall system provide significant evidence for the existence of an emergent holomorphic modular symmetry $Γ_0(2)$. We briefly review this evidence and show that, for the lowest temperatures, the experimental determination of the position of the quantum critical points agrees to the parts \emph{per mille} level with the prediction from $Γ_0(2)$. We present evidence that experiments giving results that deviate substantially from the symmetry predictions are not cold enough to be in the quantum critical domain. We show how the modular …
Scalar spin chirality is expected to induce a finite contribution to the Hall response at low temperatures. We study this spin-chirality-driven Hall effect, known as the topological Hall effect, at the manganite side of the interface between La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ and SrIrO$_3$. The ferromagnetic double-exchange hopping at the manganite layer, in conjunction with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction which arises at the interface due to broken inversion symmetry and strong spin-orbit coupling from the iridate layer, could produce a skyrmion-crystal (SkX) phase in the presence of an e…
We propose a trial wave function for the quantum Hall bilayer system of total filling factor $ν_T=1$ at a layer distance $d$ to magnetic length $\ell$ ratio $d/\ell=κ_{c1}\approx1.1$, where the lowest charged excitation is known to have a level crossing. The wave function has two-particle correlations which fit well with those in previous numerical studies, and can be viewed as a Bose-Einstein condensate of free excitons formed by composite bosons and anti-composite bosons in different layers. We show the free nature of these excitons indicating an emergent SU(2) symmetry for the composite bos…
We show the explicit connection between two distinct and complementary approaches to the fractional quantum Hall system (FQHS): the quantum wires formalism and the topological low-energy effective description given in terms of an Abelian Chern-Simons theory. The quantum wires approach provides a description of the FQHS directly in terms of fermions arranged in an array of one-dimensional coupled wires. In this sense it is usually referred to as a microscopic description. On the other hand, the effective theory has no connection with the microscopic modes, involving only the emergent topologica…
When a fermionic quantum Hall system is projected into the lowest Landau level, there is an exact particle-hole symmetry between filling fractions $ν$ and $1-ν$. We investigate whether a similar symmetry can emerge in bosonic quantum Hall states, where it would connect states at filling fractions $ν$ and $2-ν$. We begin by showing that the particle-hole conjugate to a composite fermion `Jain state' is another Jain state, obtained by reverse flux attachment. We show how information such as the shift and the edge theory can be obtained for states which are particle-hole conjugates. Using the tec…
In [Can et al. 2016], quantum Hall states on singular surfaces were shown to possess an emergent conformal symmetry. In this paper, we develop this idea further and flesh out details on the emergent conformal symmetry in holomorphic adiabatic states, which we define in the paper. We highlight the connection between the universal features of geometric transport of quantum Hall states and holomorphic dimension of primary fields in conformal field theory. In parallel we compute the universal finite-size corrections to the free energy of a critical system on a hyperbolic sphere with conical and cu…
Ionic substitution forms an essential pathway to manipulate the carrier density and crystalline symmetry of materials via ion-lattice-electron coupling, leading to a rich spectrum of electronic states in strongly correlated systems. Using the ferromagnetic metal SrRuO3 as a model system, we demonstrate an efficient and reversible control of both carrier density and crystalline symmetry through the ionic liquid gating induced protonation. The insertion of protons electron-dopes SrRuO3, leading to an exotic ferromagnetic to paramagnetic phase transition along with the increase of proton concentr…
The description of chiral quantum incompressible fluids by the W-infinity symmetry can be extended from the edge, where it encompasses the conformal field theory approach, to the non-conformal bulk. The two regimes are characterized by excitations with different sizes, energies and momenta within the disk geometry. In particular, the bulk quantities have a finite limit for large droplets. We obtain analytic results for the radial shape of excitations, the edge reconstruction phenomenon and the energy spectrum of density fluctuations in Laughlin states.
We investigate the quantum phases of hard-core bosonic atoms in an extended Hubbard model where particles interact via soft-shoulder potentials in one dimension. Using a combination of field-theoretical methods and strong-coupling perturbation theory, we demonstrate that the low-energy phase can be a conformal cluster Luttinger liquid (CLL) phase with central charge $c=1$, where the microscopic degrees of freedom correspond to mesoscopic ensembles of particles. Using numerical density-matrix-renormalization-group methods, we demonstrate that the CLL phase, first predicted in [Phys. Rev. Lett. …
Extending the background metric optimization procedure for Euclidean path integrals of two-dimensional conformal field theories, introduced by Caputa et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 071602 (2017)), to a $z=2$ anisotropically scale-invariant $(2+1)$-dimensional Lifshitz field theory of a free massless scalar field, we find optimal geometries for static and dynamic correlation functions. For the static correlation functions, the optimal background metric is equivalent to an AdS metric on a Poincare patch, while for dynamical correlation functions, we find Lifshitz like metric. This results suggest…
We investigate the skyrmion formation process in nano-structured FeGe Hall-bar devices by measurements of topological Hall effect, which extracts the winding number of a spin texture as an emergent magnetic field. Step-wise profiles of topological Hall resistivity are observed in the course of varying the applied magnetic field, which arise from instantaneous changes in the magnetic nano-structure such as creation, annihilation, and jittering motion of skyrmions. The discrete changes in topological Hall resistivity demonstrate the quantized nature of emergent magnetic flux inherent in each sky…
The fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) realized in two-dimensional electron systems under a magnetic field is one of the most remarkable discoveries in condensed matter physics. Interestingly, it has been proposed that FQHE can also emerge in time-reversal invariant spin systems, known as the chiral spin liquid (CSL) characterized by the topological order and the emerging of the fractionalized quasiparticles. A CSL can naturally lead to the exotic superconductivity originating from the condense of anyonic quasiparticles. Although CSL was highly sought after for more than twenty years, it ha…
Just as spontaneous symmetry breaking can be understood in terms of energy, emergent symmetry (more precisely, its `size' and structure) can also be explained by free energy. In particular, in renormalization group flow to rational conformal field theory, we find infrared symmetry category is realized by consistent modular tensor category with minimal free energy. For demonstration, we study non-unitary theories.
We study the energy and entanglement dynamics of $(1+1)$D conformal field theories (CFTs) under a Floquet drive with the sine-square deformed (SSD) Hamiltonian. Previous work has shown this model supports both a non-heating and a heating phase. Here we analytically establish several robust and `super-universal' features of the heating phase which rely on conformal invariance but not on the details of the CFT involved. First, we show the energy density is concentrated in two peaks in real space, a chiral and anti-chiral peak, which leads to an exponential growth in the total energy. The peak lo…
We show numerically that the `deconfined' quantum critical point between the Néel antiferromagnet and the columnar valence-bond-solid, for a square lattice of spin-1/2s, has an emergent $SO(5)$ symmetry. This symmetry allows the Néel vector and the valence-bond-solid order parameter to be rotated into each other. It is a remarkable 2+1-dimensional analogue of the $SO(4)= [SU(2)\times SU(2)]/Z_2$ symmetry that appears in the scaling limit for the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain. The emergent $SO(5)$ is strong evidence that the phase transition in the 2+1D system is truly continuous, despite the viola…
In this letter, we analyze the topological response of a fermionic model defined on the Lieb lattice in presence of an electromagnetic field. The tight-binding model is built in terms of three species of spinless fermions and supports a topological Varma phase due to the spontaneous breaking of time-reversal symmetry. In the low-energy regime, the emergent effective Hamiltonian coincides with the so-called Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau (DKP) Hamiltonian, which describes relativistic pseudospin-0 quasiparticles. By considering a minimal coupling between the DKP quasiparticles and an external Abelian gau…
Using truncated conformal field theory (CFT), we present the formalism necessary to obtain exact matrix product state (MPS) representations for any fractional quantum hall model state which can be written as an expectation value of primary fields in some conformal field theory. The auxiliary bond space is the Hilbert space of the descendants of primary fields and matrix elements can be calculated using well-known CFT commutation relations. We obtain a site-independent MPS representation on the thin annulus and cylinder, while a site-dependent representation is possible on the disk and sphere g…
The particle-hole (PH) symmetry of {\em electrons} is an exact symmetry of the electronic Hamiltonian confined to a specific Landau level, and its interplay with the formation of composite fermions has attracted much attention of late. This article investigates an emergent symmetry in the fractional quantum Hall effect, namely the PH symmetry of {\em composite fermions}, which relates states at composite fermion filling factors $ν^*=n+\barν$ and $ν^*=n+1-\barν$, where the integer $n$ is the $Λ$ level index and $0\leq \barν\leq 1$. Detailed calculations using the microscopic theory of composite…
In this paper, a series of $ν=2/5$ fractional quantum Hall wave functions are constructed from conformal field theory(CFT). They share the same topological properties with states constructed by Jain's composite fermion approach. Upon exact lowest Landau level(LLL) projection, some of Jain composite fermion states would not survive if constraints on Landau level indices given in the appendices of this paper were not satisfied. By contrast, states constructed from CFT always stay in LLL. These states are characterized by different topological shifts and multibody relative angular momenta. As a b…
Commensurability is of paramount importance in numerous strongly interacting electronic systems. In the Fractional Quantum Hall effect, a rich cascade of increasingly narrow plateaux appear at larger denominator filling fractions. Rich commensurate structures also emerge, at certain filling fractions, in high temperature superconductors and other electronic systems. A natural question concerns the character of these and other electronic systems at irrational filling fractions. Here we demonstrate that quasicrystalline structures naturally emerge in these situations, and trigger behaviors not t…

Recent experiments in graphene heterostructures have observed Chern insulators - integer and fractional Quantum Hall states made possible by a periodic substrate potential. Here we study theoretically the competition between different Chern insulators, which can be tuned by the amplitude of the periodic potential, leads to a new family of quantum critical points described by QED$_3$-Chern-Simons theory. At these critical points, $N_f$ flavors of Dirac fermions interact through an emergent U$(1)$ gauge theory at Chern-Simons level $K$, and remarkably, the entire family (with any $N_f$ or $K$) c…
Topological superconductors are characterized by topological invariants that describe the number and nature of their robust boundary modes. These invariants must also have observable consequences in the bulk of the system, akin to the quantized bulk Hall conductivity in the quantum Hall effect, but such consequences are made elusive by the spontaneous breaking of $U(1)$ symmetry in the superconductor. Here we focus on 2+1 dimensional spin-less $p$-wave superconductors and show that emergent gravity serves as a natural bulk probe for their topological invariant. This emergent gravity is due to …
Condensed matter exhibits a wide variety of exotic emergent phenomena such as the fractional quantum Hall effect and the low temperature cooperative behavior of highly frustrated magnets. I consider the classical Hamiltonian dynamics of spins of the latter phenomena using a method introduced by Dirac in the 1950s by assuming they are constrained to their lowest energy configurations as a simplifying measure. Focusing on the kagome antiferromagnet as an example, I find it is a gauge system with topological dynamics and non-locally connected edge states for certain open boundary conditions simil…
The Kalmeyer-Laughlin state, which is a lattice version of the bosonic Laughlin state at filling factor one half, has attracted much attention due to its topological and chiral spin liquid properties. Here we show that the Kalmeyer-Laughlin state on the torus can be expressed in terms of a correlator of conformal fields from the $SU(2)_1$ Wess-Zumino-Witten model. This reveals an interesting underlying mathematical structure and provides a natural way to generalize the Kalmeyer-Laughlin state to arbitrary lattices on the torus. We find that the many-body Chern number of the states is unity for…
The fractional quantum Hall effect is the paradigmatic example of topologically ordered phases. One of its most fascinating aspects is the large variety of different topological orders that may be realized, in particular nonabelian ones. Here we analyze a class of nonabelian fractional quantum Hall model states which are generalizations of the abelian Haldane-Halperin hierarchy. We derive their topological properties and show that the quasiparticles obey nonabelian fusion rules of type su(q)_k. For a subset of these states we are able to derive the conformal field theory description that makes…
