We study the energy and entanglement dynamics of $(1+1)$D conformal field theories (CFTs) under a Floquet drive with the sine-square deformed (SSD) Hamiltonian. Previous work has shown this model supports both a non-heating and a heating phase. Here we analytically establish several robust and `super-universal' features of the heating phase which rely on conformal invariance but not on the details of the CFT involved. First, we show the energy density is concentrated in two peaks in real space, a chiral and anti-chiral peak, which leads to an exponential growth in the total energy. The peak locations are set by fixed points of the Möbius transformation. Second, all of the quantum entanglement is shared between these two peaks. In each driving period, a number of Bell pairs are generated, with one member pumped to the chiral peak, and the other member pumped to the anti-chiral peak. These Bell pairs are localized and accumulate at these two peaks, and can serve as a source of quantum entanglement. Third, in both the heating and non-heating phases we find that the total energy is related to the half system entanglement entropy by a simple relation $E(t)\propto c \exp \left( \frac{6}{c}S(t) \right)$ with $c$ being the central charge. In addition, we show that the non-heating phase, in which the energy and entanglement oscillate in time, is unstable to small fluctuations of the driving frequency in contrast to the heating phase. Finally, we point out an analogy to the periodically driven harmonic oscillator which allows us to understand global features of the phases, and introduce a quasiparticle picture to explain the spatial structure, which can be generalized to setups beyond the SSD construction.
While driven interacting quantum matter is generically subject to heating and scrambling, certain classes of systems evade this paradigm. We study such an exceptional class in periodically driven critical (1 + 1)-dimensional systems with a spatially modulated, but disorder-free time evolution operator. Instead of complete scrambling, the excitations of the system remain well-defined. Their propagation is analogous to the evolution along light cones in a curved space-time obtained by two Schwarzschild black holes. The Hawking temperature serves as an order parameter which distinguishes between …

Equilibrium statistical mechanics rests on the assumption of ergodic dynamics of a system modulo the conservation laws of local observables: extremization of entropy immediately gives Gibbs' ensemble (GE) for energy conserving systems and a generalized version of it (GGE) when the number of local conserved quantities (LCQ) is more than one. Through the last decade, statistical mechanics has been extended to describe the late-time behaviour of periodically driven (Floquet) quantum matter starting from a generic state. The structure built on the fundamental assumptions of ergodicity and identifi…
Conformal field theories (CFT) play an important role in quantum field theories as they allow for exact studies that are hard to access without the conformal symmetries in place. A remarkable recent development is the application of conformal field theory to periodically driven systems, the so-called Floquet-driven CFTs. A number of recent works have found that there are classes of periodically driven (1+1)-dimensional CFTs that can be analytically solved, and that show both heating and non-heating phases, as well as unusual properties in terms of information scrambling. Hitherto, most results…
We propose a general method of cooling -- periodic driving generated by spatially deformed Hamiltonians -- and study it in general one-dimensional quantum critical systems described by a conformal field theory. Our protocol is able to efficiently cool a finite-temperature Gibbs (mixed) state down to zero temperature at prescribed sub-regions exponentially rapidly in Floquet time cycles. At the same time, entropy and energy are transferred and localized to the complementary regions that shrink with time. We derive these conclusions through an exact analytic solution of the full time evolution o…
When a Dirac semimetal is subject to a circularly polarized laser, it is predicted that the Dirac cone splits into two Weyl nodes and a nonequilibrium transient state called the Floquet Weyl semimetal is realized. We focus on the previously unexplored low-frequency regime, where the upper and lower Dirac bands resonantly couple with each other through multi-photon processes, which is a realistic situation in solid state ultrafast pump-probe experiments. We find a series of new Weyl nodes emerging in pairs when the Floquet replica bands hybridize with each other. The nature of the Floquet Weyl …
Given a $generic$ two-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT), we propose an analytically solvable setup to study the Floquet dynamics of the CFT, i.e., the dynamics of a CFT subject to a periodic driving. A complete phase diagram in the parameter space can be analytically obtained within our setup. We find two phases: the heating phase and the non-heating phase. In the heating phase, the entanglement entropy keeps growing linearly in time, indicating that the system keeps absorbing energy; in the non-heating phase, the entanglement entropy oscillates periodically in time, i.e., the system is…
Classification of the non-equilibrium quantum many-body dynamics is a challenging problem in condensed matter physics and statistical mechanics. In this work, we study the basic question that whether a (1+1) dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) is stable or not under a periodic driving with $N$ non-commuting Hamiltonians. Previous works showed that a Floquet (or periodically driven) CFT driven by certain $SL_2$ deformed Hamiltonians exhibit both non-heating (stable) and heating (unstable) phases. In this work, we show that the phase diagram depends on the types of driving Hamiltonians. In …
We study the properties {of a conformal field theory} (CFT) driven periodically with a continuous protocol characterized by a frequency $ω_D$. Such a drive, in contrast to its discrete counterparts (such as square pulses or periodic kicks), does not admit exact analytical solution for the evolution operator $U$. In this work, we develop a Floquet perturbation theory which provides an analytic, albeit perturbative, result for $U$ that matches exact numerics in the large drive amplitude limit. We find that the drive yields the well-known heating (hyperbolic) and non-heating (elliptic) phases sep…
In this work, we study non-equilibrium dynamics in Floquet conformal field theories (CFTs) in 1+1D, in which the driving Hamiltonian involves the energy-momentum density spatially modulated by an arbitrary smooth function. This generalizes earlier work which was restricted to the sine-square deformed type of Floquet Hamiltonians, operating within a $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ sub-algebra. Here we show remarkably that the problem remains soluble in this generalized case which involves the full Virasoro algebra, based on a geometrical approach. It is found that the phase diagram is determined by the strob…
A tremendous amount of recent attention has focused on characterizing the dynamical properties of periodically driven many-body systems. Here, we use a novel numerical tool termed `density matrix truncation' (DMT) to investigate the late-time dynamics of large-scale Floquet systems. We find that DMT accurately captures two essential pieces of Floquet physics, namely, prethermalization and late-time heating to infinite temperature. Moreover, by implementing a spatially inhomogeneous drive, we demonstrate that an interplay between Floquet heating and diffusive transport is crucial to understandi…
We show that quantum Hall states on surfaces with conical singularities behave as conformal primaries near the singular points, with a conformal dimension controlled by the gravitational anomaly. We show that the electronic fluid at the cone tip possesses an intrinsic angular momentum equal to the conformal dimension, in units of the Planck constant. Finally, we argue that the gravitational anomaly also controls { the fine structure of electronic density at the tip, and } the exchange statistics of cones in the Laughlin states, arising from adiabatically braiding conical singularities. Thus, t…
We demonstrate that the prethermal regime of periodically driven (Floquet), classical many-body systems can host nonequilibrium phases of matter. In particular, we show that there exists an effective Hamiltonian that captures the dynamics of ensembles of classical trajectories despite the breakdown of this description at the single trajectory level. In addition, we prove that the effective Hamiltonian can host emergent symmetries protected by the discrete time-translation symmetry of the drive. The spontaneous breaking of such an emergent symmetry leads to a subharmonic response, characteristi…
We use the conformal bootstrap program to derive necessary conditions for emergent symmetry enhancement from discrete symmetry (e.g. $\mathbb{Z}_n$) to continuous symmetry (e.g. $U(1)$) under the renormalization group flow. In three dimensions, in order for $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry to be enhanced to $U(1)$ symmetry, the conformal bootstrap program predicts that the scaling dimension of the order parameter field at the infrared conformal fixed point must satisfy $Δ_1 > 1.08$. We also obtain the similar conditions for $\mathbb{Z}_3$ symmetry with $Δ_{1} > 0.580$ and $\mathbb{Z}_4$ symmetry with $…
Time crystals, a phase showing spontaneous breaking of time-translation symmetry, has been an intriguing subject for systems far away from equilibrium. Recent experiments found such a phase both in the presence and absence of localization, while in theories localization by disorder is usually assumed a priori. In this work, we point out that time crystals can generally exist in systems without disorder. A series of clean quasi-one-dimensional models under Floquet driving are proposed to demonstrate this unexpected result in principle. Robust time crystalline orders are found in the strongly in…
Conventional wisdom suggests that the long time behavior of isolated interacting periodically driven (Floquet) systems is a featureless maximal entropy state characterized by an infinite temperature. Efforts to thwart this uninteresting fixed point include adding sufficient disorder to realize a Floquet many-body localized phase or working in a narrow region of drive frequencies to achieve glassy non-thermal behavior at long time. Here we show that in clean systems the Floquet eigenstates can exhibit non-thermal behavior due to finite system size. We consider a one-dimensional system of spinle…

Prolonged experimental attempts to find magnetic monopoles (i.e., elementary particles with an isolated magnetic charge in three dimensions) have not yet been successful despite intensive efforts made since Dirac's proposal in 1931. Particle physicists have predicted the possible collision and pair annihilation of two magnetic charges with opposite signs. However, if such annihilation exists, its experimental observation would be difficult because its energy scale is predicted to be tremendously high ($\sim$10$^{16}$ GeV). In the present work, we theoretically predict using the Floquet theory …
Recently, the steady states of non-unitary free fermion dynamics are found to exhibit novel critical phases with power-law squared correlations and a logarithmic subsystem entanglement. In this work, we theoretically understand the underlying physics by constructing solvable static/Brownian quadratic Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev chains with non-Hermitian dynamics. We find the action of the replicated system generally shows (one or infinite copies of) ${O(2)\times O(2)}$ symmetries, which is broken to ${O(2)}$ by the saddle-point solution. This leads to an emergent conformal field theory of the Goldstone …
We consider a two dimensional (2D) model of particles interacting in a Landau level. We work in a finite disk geometry and take the particles to interact with a linearly decreasing two-body Haldane pseudo-potential. We show that the ground state subspace of this model is spanned by the wave-functions that can be written as polynomial conformal blocks (of an arbitrary conformal field theory) consistent with the filling fraction (scaling dimension). To remove degeneracies, we then add a quadratic perturbation to the Hamiltonian and show that; 1. Conformal blocks constructed using the Moore-Read …
We construct a many-body quantized invariant that sharply distinguishes among two dimensional non-equilibrium driven phases of interacting fermions. This is an interacting generalization of a band-structure Floquet quasi-energy winding number, and describes chiral pumping of quantum information along the edge. In particular, our invariant sharply distinguishes between a trivial and anomalous Floquet Anderson insulator in the interacting, many-body localized setting. It also applies more generally to models where only fermion parity is conserved, where it differentiates between trivial models a…
We investigate the quantum phases of hard-core bosonic atoms in an extended Hubbard model where particles interact via soft-shoulder potentials in one dimension. Using a combination of field-theoretical methods and strong-coupling perturbation theory, we demonstrate that the low-energy phase can be a conformal cluster Luttinger liquid (CLL) phase with central charge $c=1$, where the microscopic degrees of freedom correspond to mesoscopic ensembles of particles. Using numerical density-matrix-renormalization-group methods, we demonstrate that the CLL phase, first predicted in [Phys. Rev. Lett. …

A quantum critical system described at low energy by a conformal field theory (CFT) and subjected to a time-periodic boundary drive displays multiple dynamical regimes depending on the drive frequency. We compute the behavior of quantities including the entanglement entropy and Loschmidt echo, confirming analytic predictions from field theory by exact numerics on the transverse field Ising model, and demonstrate universality by adding non-integrable perturbations. The dynamics naturally separate into three regimes: a slow-driving limit, which has an interpretation as multiple quantum quenches …
In this paper, we study 2d Floquet conformal field theory, where the external periodic driving is described by iterated logistic or tent maps. These maps are known to be typical examples of dynamical systems exhibiting the order-chaos transition, and we show that, as a result of such driving, the entanglement entropy scaling develops fractal features when the corresponding dynamical system approaches the chaotic regime. For the driving set by the logistic map, fractal contribution to the scaling dominates, making entanglement entropy highly oscillating function of the subsystem size.
We propose a mechanism for light-induced unconventional superconductivity in a two-valley semiconductor with a massive Dirac type band structure. The superconducting phase results from the out-of-equilibrium excitation of carriers in the presence of Coulomb repulsion and is stabilized by coupling the driven semiconductor to a bosonic or fermionic thermal bath. We consider a circularly-polarized light pump and show that by controlling the detuning of the pump frequency relative to the band gap, different types of chiral superconductivity would be induced. The emergence of novel superconducting …
Extending the background metric optimization procedure for Euclidean path integrals of two-dimensional conformal field theories, introduced by Caputa et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 071602 (2017)), to a $z=2$ anisotropically scale-invariant $(2+1)$-dimensional Lifshitz field theory of a free massless scalar field, we find optimal geometries for static and dynamic correlation functions. For the static correlation functions, the optimal background metric is equivalent to an AdS metric on a Poincare patch, while for dynamical correlation functions, we find Lifshitz like metric. This results suggest…
Just as spontaneous symmetry breaking can be understood in terms of energy, emergent symmetry (more precisely, its `size' and structure) can also be explained by free energy. In particular, in renormalization group flow to rational conformal field theory, we find infrared symmetry category is realized by consistent modular tensor category with minimal free energy. For demonstration, we study non-unitary theories.
In [Can et al. 2016], quantum Hall states on singular surfaces were shown to possess an emergent conformal symmetry. In this paper, we develop this idea further and flesh out details on the emergent conformal symmetry in holomorphic adiabatic states, which we define in the paper. We highlight the connection between the universal features of geometric transport of quantum Hall states and holomorphic dimension of primary fields in conformal field theory. In parallel we compute the universal finite-size corrections to the free energy of a critical system on a hyperbolic sphere with conical and cu…
We develop a flow renormalization approach for periodically-driven quantum systems, which reveals prethermal dynamical regimes and associated timescales via direct correspondence between real time and flow time behavior. In this formalism, the dynamical problem is recast in terms of coupling constants of the theory flowing towards an attractive fixed point that represents the thermal Floquet Hamiltonian at long times, while narrowly avoiding a series of unstable fixed points which determine distinct prethermal regimes at intermediate times. We study a class of relevant perturbations that trigg…
We study the quantum critical phase of a SU(2) symmetric spin-2 chain obtained from spin-2 bosons in a one-dimensional lattice. We obtain the scaling of the entanglement entropy and finite-size energies by exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization group methods. From the numerical results of the energy spectrum, central charge, and scaling dimension we identify the conformal field theory describing the whole critical phase to be the SU(3)$_1$ Wess-Zumino-Witten model. We find that while in the whole critical phase the Hamiltonian is only SU(2) invariant, there is an emergent SU(…
Time periodic driving serves not only as a convenient way to engineer effective Hamiltonians, but also as a means to produce intrinsically dynamical phases that do not exist in the static limit. A recent example of the latter are 2D chiral Floquet (CF) phases exhibiting anomalous edge dynamics that pump discrete packets of quantum information along one direction. In non-fractionalized systems with only bosonic excitations, this pumping is quantified by a dynamical topological index that is a rational number -- highlighting its difference from the integer valued invariant underlying equilibrium…

In this work, we explore the possibility of emergent nonequilibrium steady states arising from the electric-field-driven Mott insulator via the Keldysh-Floquet dynamical mean field theory (DMFT), which can determine the fully-interacting, nonequilibrium steady-state Green's functions with the noninteracting counterparts as an input to the DMFT self-consistency loop. Unlike the retarded component, obtaining the lesser Green's function for the noninteracting system presents an important obstacle since the thermalization of the noninteracting system still requires a precise understanding of the d…
