In this paper, we consider categories with colored morphisms and functors such that morphisms assigned to morphisms with a common color have a common color. In this paper, we construct a morphism-colored functor such that any morphism-colored functor from a given small morphism-colored groupoid to any discrete morphism-colored category factors through it. We also apply the main result to a schemoid constructed from a Hamming scheme.
The present work presents some results about the categorial relation between logics and its categories of structures. A (propositional, finitary) logic is a pair given by a signature and Tarskian consequence relation on its formula algebra. The logics are the objects in our categories of logics; the morphisms are certain signature morphisms that are translations between logics (\cite{AFLM1},\cite{AFLM2},\cite{AFLM3} \cite{FC}). Morphisms between algebraizable logics (\cite{BP}) are translations that preserves algebraizing pairs (\cite{MaMe}): they can be completely encoded by certain functors …
We introduce a notion of normalised oplax $3$-functor suitable for the elementary homotopy theory of strict $3$-categories, following the combinatorics of orientals. We show that any such morphism induces a morphism of simplicial sets between the Street nerves and we characterise those morphisms of simplicial sets coming from normalised oplax $3$-functors. This allows us to prove that normalised oplax $3$-functors compose. Finally we construct a strictification for normalised oplax $3$-functors whose source is a $1$-category without split-monos or split-epis.
We study the existence and uniqueness of minimal right determiners in various categories. Particularly in a Hom-finite hereditary abelian category with enough projectives, we prove that the Auslander-Reiten-Smalø-Ringel formula of the minimal right determiner still holds. As an application, we give a formula of minimal right determiners in the category of finitely presented representations of strongly locally finite quivers.
We systematically investigate morphisms and equivalences of toposes from multiple points of view. We establish a dual adjunction between morphisms and comorphisms of sites, introduce the notion of weak morphism of toposes and characterize the functors which induce such morphisms. In particular, we examine continuous comorphism of sites and show that this class of comorphisms notably includes all fibrations as well as morphisms of fibrations. We also establish a characterization theorem for essential geometric morphisms and locally connected morphisms in terms of continuous functors, and a rela…
Departing from a suitable categorical concept of topogenous orders defined relative to the bifibration of subobjects, this note introduces and studies topogenous orders on faithful and amnestic functors. Amongst other things, it is shown that this approach captures the formal closure operators and leads to the introduction of formal interior operators. Turning to special morphisms relative to the orders introduced, we show that a morphism is strict relative to an order if the order preserves codomains of its cocartesian liftings while a morphism is final if the order reflects domains of its ca…
We study a number of categorical quasi-uniform structures induced by functors. We depart from a category $\mathcal{C}$ with a proper $(\mathcal{E}, \mathcal{M})$-factorization system, then define the continuity of a $\mathcal{C}$-morphism with respect to two syntopogenous structures (in particular with respect to two quasi-uniformities) on $\mathcal{C}$ and use it to describe the quasi-uniformities induced by pointed and copointed endofunctors of $\mathcal{C}$. In particular, we demonstrate that every quasi-uniformity on a reflective subcategory of $\mathcal{C}$ can be lifted to a coarsest qua…
We provide three functorial extensions of the equivalence between localic etale groupoids and their quantales. The main result is a biequivalence between the bicategory of localic etale groupoids, with bi-actions as 1-cells, and a bicategory of inverse quantal frames whose 1-cells are bimodules. As a consequence, the category InvQuF of inverse quantale frames, whose morphisms are the (necessarily involutive) homomorphisms of unital quantales, is equivalent to a category of localic etale groupoids whose arrows are the algebraic morphisms in the sense of Buneci and Stachura. We also show that th…
Let C and D be quasi-categories (a.k.a. infinity-categories). Suppose also that one has an assignment sending commutative diagrams of C to commutative diagrams of D which respects face maps, but not necessarily degeneracy maps. (This is akin to having an assignment which respects all compositions, but may not send identity morphisms to identity morphisms.) When does this assignment give rise to an actual functor? We show that if the original assignment can be shown to respect identity morphisms up to homotopy, then there exists an honest functor of infinity-categories which respects the origin…
In the present paper, we propose a new theory named "Theory of indeterminate natural transformation (TINT)" to investigate the dynamical creation of meanings as association relationships between images, focusing on the metaphor comprehension as an example. TINT models the meaning creation as a kind of stochastic processes based on the mathematical structure defined by association relationships as morphisms in category theory, so as to represent the indeterminate nature of structure-structure interactions between the systems of the meanings of images. Such interactions are formulated in terms o…
We prove that a large class of natural transformations (consisting roughly of those constructed via composition from the "functorial" or "base change" transformations) between two functors of the form $\cdots f^* g_* \cdots$ actually has only one element, and thus that any diagram of such maps necessarily commutes. We identify the precise axioms defining what we call a "geofibered category" that ensure that such a coherence theorem exists. Our results apply to all the usual sheaf-theoretic contexts of algebraic geometry. The analogous result that would include any other of the six functors rem…
To a B-coring and a (B,A)-bimodule that is finitely generated and projective as a right A-module an A-coring is associated. This new coring is termed a base ring extension of a coring by a module. We study how the properties of a bimodule such as separability and the Frobenius properties are reflected in the induced base ring extension coring. Any bimodule that is finitely generated and projective on one side, together with a map of corings over the same base ring, lead to the notion of a module-morphism, which extends the notion of a morphism of corings (over different base rings). A module-m…
We study limits in 2-categories whose objects are categories with extra structure and whose morphisms are functors preserving the structure only up to a coherent comparison map, which may or may not be required to be invertible. This is done using the framework of 2-monads. In order to characterize the limits which exist in this context, we need to consider also the functors which do strictly preserve the extra structure. We show how such a 2-category of weak morphisms which is "enhanced", by specifying which of these weak morphisms are actually strict, can be thought of as category enriched o…
We show that a functor category whose domain is a colored category is a topos. The topos structure enables us to introduce cohomology of colored categories including quasi-schemoids. If the given colored category arises from an association scheme, then the cohomology coincides with the group cohomology of the factor scheme by the thin residue. Moreover, it is shown that the cohomology of a colored category relates to the standard representation of an association scheme via the Leray spectral sequence.
The category of (colored) props is an enhancement of the category of colored operads, and thus of the category of small categories. In this paper, the second in a series on "higher props," we show that the category of all small colored simplicial props admits a cofibrantly generated model category structure. With this model structure, the forgetful functor from props to operads is a right Quillen functor.
The fundamental construction underlying descent theory, the lax descent category, comes with a functor that forgets the descent data. We prove that, in any $2$-category $\mathfrak{A} $ with lax descent objects, the forgetful morphisms create all Kan extensions that are preserved by certain morphisms. As a consequence, in the case $\mathfrak{A} = \mathsf{Cat} $, we get a monadicity theorem which says that a right adjoint functor is monadic if and only if it is, up to the composition with an equivalence, (naturally isomorphic to) a functor that forgets descent data. In particular, within the cla…
We prove that the notion of Drinfeld center defines a functor from the category of indecomposable multi-tensor categories with morphisms given by bimodules to that of braided tensor categories with morphisms given by monoidal bimodules. Moreover, we apply some ideas from the physics of topological orders to prove that the center functor restricted to indecomposable multi-fusion categories (with additional conditions on the target category) is fully faithful. As byproducts, we provide new proofs to some important known results in fusion categories. In physics, this fully faithful functor gives …
We define a class of morphisms between strict $ω$-categories called discrete Conduch{é} $ω$-functors that generalize discrete Conduch{é} functors between 1-categories and we study their properties related to polygraphs. The main result we prove is that for every discrete Conduch{é} $ω$-functor, if its target is a free strict $ω$-category on a polygraph then so is its source.
We describe a procedure for constructing morphisms in additive categories, combining Auslander's concept of a morphism determined by an object with the existence of flat covers. Also, we show how flat covers are turned into projective covers, and we interprete these constructions in terms of adjoint functors.
We introduce a notion of bimodule in the setting of enriched $\infty$-categories, and use this to construct a double $\infty$-category of enriched $\infty$-categories where the two kinds of 1-morphisms are functors and bimodules. We then consider a natural definition of natural transformations in this context, and show that in the underlying $(\infty,2)$-category of enriched $\infty$-categories with functors as 1-morphisms the 2-morphisms are given by natural transformations.
Generalizing the approach to pseudo monoidal DG-categories as certain colored non-symmetric DG-operads, we introduce a certain relaxed notion of a category enriched in DG-categories. We construct model structures on the category of colored non-symmetric DG-operads and on the category of DGCat-enriched categories with a fixed set of objects. This allows us to talk about strong homotopy maps in both settings. We discuss the notion of a strong homotopy monad in a DG-category and a notion of strong homotopy adjunction data for two DG-functors.
In this paper we prove a few propositions concerning factorizations of morphisms in pro categories, the most important of which solves an open problem of Isaksen concerning the existence of certain types of functorial factorizations. On our way we explain and correct an error in one of the standard references on pro categories.
It is known that monoidal functors between internal groupoids in the category Grp of groups constitute the bicategory of fractions of the 2-category Grpd(Grp) of internal groupoids, internal functors and internal natural transformations in Grp with respect to weak equivalences. Monoidal functors can be described equivalently by a kind of weak morphisms introduced by B. Noohi under the name of "butter ies". In order to internalize monoidal functors in a wide context, we introduce the notion of internal butterflies between internal crossed modules in a semi-abelian category C, and we show that t…
We survey the general theory of groupoids, groupoid actions, groupoid principal bundles, and various kinds of morphisms between groupoids in the framework of categories with pretopology. We study extra assumptions on pretopologies that are needed for this theory. We check these extra assumptions in several categories with pretopologies. Functors between groupoids may be localised at equivalences in two ways. One uses spans of functors, the other bibundles (commuting actions) of groupoids. We show that both approaches give equivalent bicategories. Another type of groupoid morphisms, called acto…
We consider all Bott-Samelson varieties ${\rm BS}(s)$ for a fixed connected semisimple complex algebraic group with maximal torus $T$ as the class of objects of some category. The class of morphisms of this category is an extension of the class of canonical (inserting the neutral element) morphisms ${\rm BS}(s)\hookrightarrow{\rm BS}(s')$, where $s$ is a subsequence of $s'$. Every morphism of the new category induces a map between the $T$-fixed points but not necessarily between the whole varieties. We construct a contravariant functor from this new category to the category of graded $H^\bulle…
Let F be the free group functor, left adjoint to the forgetful functor between the category of groups GRP and the category of sets SET. Let f from A to B, and h from A to C be two functions in SET and let Ker(F(f)) and Ker(F(h)) be the kernels of the induced morphisms between free groups. Provided that the kernel pairs Eq(f) and Eq(h) of f and h permute (such as it is the case when the pushout of f and h is a double extension in SET), this short article describes a method to rewrite a general element in the intersection of Ker(F(f)) and Ker(F(g)) as a product of generators in A which is (f,h)-…
Relative realizability toposes satisfy a universal property that involves regular functors to other categories. We use this universal property to define what relative realizability categories are, when based on other categories than of the topos of sets. This paper explains the property and gives a construction for relative realizability categories that works for arbitrary base Heyting categories. The universal property shows us some new geometric morphisms to relative realizability toposes too.
Jacob Lurie (arXiv:math/0412266) has shown that for geometric stacks X,Y every cocontinuous tensor functor F : Qcoh(X) -> Qcoh(Y) is the pullback of a morphism Y -> X under the additional assumption that F is tame. In this note we get rid of this assumption if X is a projective scheme. In general, we call a scheme X tensorial if every cocontinuous tensor functor Qcoh(X) -> Qcoh(Y) is induced by a unique morphism Y -> X, show that projective schemes are tensorial and tensorial schemes are closed under various operations.
Lenses may be characterised as objects in the category of algebras over a monad, however they are often understood instead as morphisms, which propagate updates between systems. Working internally to a category with pullbacks, we define lenses as simultaneously functors and cofunctors between categories. We show that lenses may be canonically represented as a particular commuting triangle of functors, and unify the classical state-based lenses with both c-lenses and d-lenses in this framework. This new treatment of lenses leads to considerable simplifications that are important in applications…
A dg-natural transformation between dg-functors is called an objectwise homotopy equivalence if its induced morphism on each object admits a homotopy inverse. In general an objectwise homotopy equivalence does not have a dg-inverse but has an $A_{\infty}$ quasi-inverse. In this note we give a recurrent formula of the $A_{\infty}$ quasi-inverse. This result is useful in studying the compositions of dg-lifts of derived functors of schemes.
We initiate the study of derived functors in the setting of extriangulated categories. By using coends, we adapt Yoneda's theory of higher extensions to this framework. We show that, when there are enough projectives or enough injectives, thus defined extensions agree with the ones defined earlier via projective or injective resolutions. For categories with enough projective or enough injective morphisms, we prove that these are right derived functors of the $\operatorname{Hom}$-bifunctor in either argument. Since $\operatorname{Hom}$ is only half-exact in each argument, it is natural to expec…
Categorification is the process of finding category-theoretic analogs of set-theoretic concepts by replacing sets with categories, functions with functors, and equations between functions by natural isomorphisms between functors, which in turn should satisfy certain equations of their own, called `coherence laws'. Iterating this process requires a theory of `n-categories', algebraic structures having objects, morphisms between objects, 2-morphisms between morphisms and so on up to n-morphisms. After a brief introduction to n-categories and their relation to homotopy theory, we discuss algebrai…
Let $\mathcal C$ be a category with finite colimits, and let $(\mathcal E,\mathcal M)$ be a factorisation system on $\mathcal C$ with $\mathcal M$ stable under pushouts. Writing $\mathcal C;\mathcal M^{\mathrm{op}}$ for the symmetric monoidal category with morphisms cospans of the form $\stackrel{c}\to \stackrel{m}\leftarrow$, where $c \in \mathcal C$ and $m \in \mathcal M$, we give method for constructing a category from a symmetric lax monoidal functor $F\colon (\mathcal C; \mathcal M^{\mathrm{op}},+) \to (\mathrm{Set},\times)$. A morphism in this category, termed a \emph{decorated corelatio…
For a quasi-compact quasi-separated scheme X and an arbitrary scheme Y we show that the pullback construction implements an equivalence between the discrete category of morphisms Y --> X and the category of cocontinuous tensor functors Qcoh(X) --> Qcoh(Y). This is an improvement of a result by Lurie and may be interpreted as the statement that algebraic geometry is 2-affine. Moreover, we prove the analogous version of this result for Durov's notion of generalized schemes over F_1.
The hammock localization provides a model for a homotopy function complex in any Quillen model category. We prove that a homotopy between a pair of morphisms induces a homotopy between the maps induced by taking the hammock localization. We describe applications of this fact to the study of homotopy algebras over monads and homotopy idempotent functors. Among other things, we prove that, under Vopěnka's principle, every homotopy idempotent functor in a cofibrantly generated model category is determined by simplicial orthogonality with respect to a set of morphisms. We also give a new proof of …
Motivated by the work of of A. Zelevinsky on positive self-adjoint Hopf algebras, we define what we call a symmetric self-adjoint Hopf structure for a certain kind of semisimple abelian categories. It is known that every positive self-adjoint Hopf algebra admits a natural action of the associated Heisenberg double. We construct canonical morphisms lifting the relations that define this action on the algebra level and define an object that we call a categorical Heisenberg double that is a natural setting for considering these morphisms. As examples, we exhibit the symmetric self-adjoint Hopf st…
A notion of a coring extension is defined and it is related to the existence of an additive functor between comodule categories that factorises through forgetful functors. This correspondence between coring extensions and factorisable functors is illustrated by functors between categories of descent data. A category in which objects are corings and morphisms are coring extensions is also introduced.
Let G be a finite group. Given a finite G-set X and a modular tensor category C, we construct a weak G-equivariant fusion category, called the permutation equivariant tensor category. The construction is geometric and uses the formalism of modular functors. As an application, we concretely work out a complete set of structure morphisms for Z/2-permutation equivariant categories, finishing thereby a program we initiated in an earlier paper arXiv:0812.0986 [math.CT].
We study "canonical weight decompositions" slightly generalizing that defined by J. Wildeshaus. For an triangulated category $C$, any integer $n$, and a weight structure $w$ on $C$ a triangle $LM\to M\to RM\to LM[1]$, where $LM$ is of weights at most $m-1$ and $RM$ is of weights at least $n+1$ for some $m\le n$, is determined by $M$ if exists. This happens if and only if the weight complex $t(M)\in Obj K(Hw)$ ($Hw$ is the heart of $w$) is homotopy equivalent to a complex with zero terms in degrees $-n,\dots, -m$; hence this condition can be "detected" via pure functors. One can also take $m=-\…
We introduce a very general extension of the monomorphism category as studied by Ringel and Schmidmeier which in particular covers generalised species over locally bounded quivers. We prove that analogues of the kernel and cokernel functor send almost split sequences over the path algebra and the preprojective algebra to split or almost split sequences in the monomorphism category. We derive this from a general result on preservation of almost split morphisms under adjoint functors whose counit is a monomorphism. Despite of its generality, our monomorphism categories still allow for explicit c…
We consider three (2-)categories and their (anti-)equivalence. They are the category of small abelian categories and exact functors, the category of definable additive categories and interpretation functors, the category of locally coherent abelian categories and coherent morphisms. These categories link algebra, model theory and "geometry".
We propose to extend ``invertibility'' to ``regularity'' for categories in general abstract algebraic manner. Higher regularity conditions and ``semicommutative'' diagrams are introduced. Distinction between commutative and ``semicommutative'' cases is measured by non-zero obstruction proportional to the difference of some self-mappings (obstructors) $e^{(n)}$ from the identity. This allows us to generalize the notion of functor and to ``regularize'' braidings and related structures in monoidal categories. A ``noninvertible'' analog of the Yang-Baxter equation is proposed.
