We have used integral field spectroscopy of a sample of six nearby (z~0.01-0.04) high star-formation rate (SFR~10-40 solar masses per year) galaxies to investigate the relationship between local velocity dispersion and star formation rate on sub-galactic scales. The low redshift mitigates, to some extent, the effect of beam smearing which artificially inflates the measured dispersion as it combines regions with different line-of-sight velocities into a single spatial pixel. We compare the parametric maps of the velocity dispersion with the Halpha flux (a proxy for local star-formation rate), and the velocity gradient (a proxy for the local effect of beam smearing). We find, even for these very nearby galaxies, the Halpha velocity dispersion correlates more strongly with velocity gradient than with Halpha flux - implying that beam smearing is still having a significant effect on the velocity dispersion measurements. We obtain a first-order non parametric correction for the unweighted and flux weighted mean velocity dispersion by fitting a 2D linear regression model to the spaxel-by-spaxel data where the velocity gradient and the Halpha flux are the independent variables and the velocity dispersion is the dependent variable; and then extrapolating to zero velocity gradient. The corrected velocity dispersions are a factor of ~1.3-4.5 and ~1.3-2.7 lower than the uncorrected flux-weighted and unweighted mean line-of-sight velocity dispersion values, respectively. These corrections are larger than has been previously cited using disc models of the velocity and velocity dispersion field to correct for beam smearing. The corrected flux-weighted velocity dispersion values are sigma_m~20-50 km/s.
Aims. Interacting galaxies show unique irregularities in their kinematic structure. By investigating the spatially resolved kinematics and stellar population properties of galaxies that show irregularities, we can paint a detailed picture of the formation and evolutionary processes that took place during its lifetimes. Methods. In this work, we focus on galaxies with a specific kinematic irregularity, a kinematically distinct stellar core (KDC), in particular, counter-rotating galaxies where the core and main body of the galaxy are rotating in opposite directions. We visually identify eleven M…
We investigate the resolved kinematics of the molecular gas, as traced by ALMA in CO (2-1), of 25 cluster member galaxies across three different clusters at a redshift of $z\sim1.6$. This is the first large-scale analysis of the molecular gas kinematics of cluster galaxies at this redshift. By separately estimating the rotation curve of the approaching and receding side of each galaxy via kinematic modeling, we quantify the difference in total circular velocity to characterize the overall kinematic asymmetry of each galaxy. 3/14 of the galaxies in our sample that we are able to model have simi…
We report on the discovery of a rare case of spatially and kinematically resolved galactic scale outflow at intermediate redshift, based on VLT/MUSE optical integral field spectroscopic observation of the quasar HE 0238$-$1904. This classical non-broad absorption line (non-BAL) quasar at $z=0.631$ remains underexplored in its optical emission lines, though its UV absorption lines are well-studied. We identify a superbubble driven by HE 0238$-$1904 from the emission line morphology, line ratio diagnostics and kinematics, showing a one-sided outflow reaching a projected distance of $R \sim 55$ k…
We present the spatially resolved gas and stellar kinematics of a sample of ten hidden type 1 AGNs in order to investigate the true nature of the central source and the scaling relation with host galaxy stellar velocity dispersion. The sample is selected from a large number of hidden type 1 AGN, which are identified based on the presence of a broad component in the \ha\ line profile (i.e., full-width-at-half-maximum $>$ $\sim$1000 \kms), while they are often mis-classified as type 2 AGN because AGN continuum and broad emission lines are weak or obscured in the optical spectral range. We used t…
We present a new study of archival ALMA observations of the CO(2-1) line emission of the host galaxy of quasar RX J1131 at redshift $z$=0.654, lensed by a foreground galaxy. A simple lens model is shown to well reproduce the optical images obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope. Clear evidence for rotation of the gas contained in the galaxy is obtained and a simple rotating disc model is shown to give an excellent overall description of the morpho-kinematics of the source. The possible presence of a companion galaxy suggested by some previous authors is not confirmed. Detailed comparison betwe…
We select 456 galaxies with kinematically misaligned gas and stellar components from 9546 parent galaxies in MaNGA, and classify them into 72 star-forming galaxies, 142 green-valley galaxies and 242 quiescent galaxies. Comparing the spatial resolved properties of the misaligned galaxies with control samples closely match in the D$_n$4000 and stellar velocity dispersion, we find that: (1) the misaligned galaxies have lower values in $V_{\rm gas}/σ_{\rm gas}$ and $V_{\rm star}/σ_{\rm star}$ (the ratio between ordered to random motion of gas and stellar components) across the entire galaxies than…
The kinematics of galaxies provide valuable insights in their physics and assembly history. Kinematics are governed not only by the gravitational potential, but also by merger events and stellar feedback processes such as stellar winds and supernova explosions. Aims. We aim at identifying what governs the kinematics in a sample of SDSS selected nearby starburst galaxies, by obtaining spatially resolved measurements of the gas and stellar kinematics. We obtain near-infrared integral field K-band spectroscopy with VLT/SINFONI of 15 compact starburst galaxies. We derive the integrated as well as …
A new but rare sample of spatially extended emission line nebulae, nicknamed "Green Beans", was discovered at z~0.3 thanks to strong [OIII] emission, and subsequently shown to be local cousins of the Lyman-alpha (Lya) nebulae found at high redshift. Here we use follow-up APO/DIS spectroscopy to better understand how these low redshift Lya nebulae compare to other populations of strong emission line sources. Our spectroscopic data show that low-z Lya nebulae have AGN-like emission line ratios, relatively narrow line widths (FWHM<1000 km s^{-1}), and emission line kinematics resembling those of …
We present parsec-scale kinematics of eleven nearby galactic nuclei, derived from adaptive-optics assisted integral-field spectroscopy at (near-infrared) CO band-head wavelengths. We focus our analysis on the balance between ordered rotation and random motions, which can provide insights into the dominant formation mechanism of nuclear star clusters (NSCs). We divide our target sample into late- and early-type galaxies, and discuss the nuclear kinematics of the two sub-samples, aiming at probing any link between NSC formation and host galaxy evolution. The results suggest that the dominant for…
Advances in instrumentation have recently extended detailed measurements of gas kinematics to large samples of high-redshift galaxies. Relative to most nearby, thin disk galaxies, in which gas rotation accurately traces the gravitational potential, the interstellar medium (ISM) of z>1 galaxies is typically more dynamic and exhibits elevated turbulence. If not properly modeled, these effects can strongly bias dynamical mass measurements. We use high-resolution FIRE-2 cosmological zoom-in simulations to analyze the physical effects that must be considered to correctly infer dynamical masses from…
Aims: There is a spatially resolved star-forming main sequence (rSFMS) and mass-metallicity relation (rMZR) of galaxies in local universe. We know that the global mass-metallicity relation (MZR) results from the integral of rMZR, and it will evolve with the redshift. However, the evolution of rMZR with redshift is still unclear due to the low spatial resolution and signal-to-noise ratio. There are currently too few observations beyond local universe, and only simulations can reproduce the evolution of rMZR with redshift. Methods: In this work, we select ten emission-line galaxies with an avera…
We discuss constraints on the mass density distribution (parameterized as $ρ\propto r^{-γ}$) in early-type galaxies provided by strong lensing and stellar kinematics data. The constraints come from mass measurements at two `pinch' radii. One `pinch' radius $r_1=2.2 R_{Einst}$ is defined such that the Einstein (i.e. aperture) mass can be converted to the spherical mass almost independently of the mass-model. Another `pinch' radius $r_2=R_{opt}$ is chosen so that the dynamical mass, derived from the line-of-sight velocity dispersion, is least sensitive to the anisotropy of stellar orbits. We ver…
We present spatially-resolved two-dimensional maps and radial trends of the stellar populations and kinematics for a sample of six compact elliptical galaxies (cE) using spectroscopy from the Keck Cosmic Web Imager (KCWI). We recover their star formation histories, finding that all except one of our cEs are old and metal rich, with both age and metallicity decreasing toward their outer radii. We also use the integrated values within one effective radius to study different scaling relations. Comparing our cEs with others from the literature and from simulations we reveal the formation channel t…
High redshift disc galaxies are more gas rich, clumpier, and more turbulent than local Universe galaxies. This early era of galaxy formation imprints the distribution and kinematics of the stars that we observe today, but it is not yet well established how. In this work, we use simulations of isolated Milky Way-mass disc galaxies to study how kinematic properties of stars change when varying the gas fraction. This allows us to quantify the roles played by internal processes, e.g. gas turbulence and gravitational scattering off massive gas clumps, in establishing the observed stellar velocity d…
Integral field spectroscopy of high-redshift galaxies has become a powerful tool for understanding their dynamics and evolutionary states. However, in the case of gravitationally lensed systems, it has proved difficult to model both lensing and intrinsic kinematics in a way that takes full advantage of the information available in the spectral domain. In this paper, we introduce a new method for pixel-based source reconstruction that alters standard regularization schemes for two-dimensional data in a way that leverages kinematic information in a physically motivated but flexible fashion, and …
I review here the spatially-resolved spectroscopic properties of low-redshift star-forming galaxies (and their retired counter-parts), using results from the most recent Integral Field Spectroscopy galaxy surveys. First, I briefly summarise the global spectroscopic properties of these galaxies, discussing the main ionization processes, and the global relations described between the star-formation rates, oxygen abundances, and average properties of their stellar populations (age and metallicity) with the stellar mass. Second, I present the local distribution of the ionizing processes, down to k…
We use GAIA DR2 proper motions of the RIOTS4 field OB stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) to study the kinematics of runaway stars. The data reveal that the SMC Wing has a systemic peculiar motion relative to the SMC Bar of (v_RA, v_Dec) = (62 +/-7, -18+/-5) km/s and relative radial velocity +4.5 +/- 5.0 km/s. This unambiguously demonstrates that these two regions are kinematically distinct: the Wing is moving away from the Bar, and towards the Large Magellanic Cloud with a 3-D velocity of 64 +/- 10 km/s. This is consistent with models for a recent, direct collision between the Clouds. W…
We examine the kinematics of the gas in the environments of galaxies hosting quasars at $z\sim2$. We employ 148 projected quasar pairs to study the circumgalactic gas of the foreground quasars in absorption. The sample selects foreground quasars with precise redshift measurements, using emission-lines with precision $\lesssim300\,{\rm km\,s^{-1}}$ and average offsets from the systemic redshift $\lesssim|100\,{\rm km\,s^{-1}}|$. We stack the background quasar spectra at the foreground quasar's systemic redshift to study the mean absorption in \ion{C}{2}, \ion{C}{4}, and \ion{Mg}{2}. We find tha…
We present spatially resolved Hubble Space Telescope grism spectroscopy of 15 galaxies at $z\sim0.8$ drawn from the DEEP2 survey. We analyze H$α$+[N II], [S II] and [S III] emission on kpc scales to explore which mechanisms are powering emission lines at high redshifts, testing which processes may be responsible for the well-known offset of high redshift galaxies from the $z\sim0$ locus in the [O III]/H$β$ versus [N II]/H$α$ BPT (Baldwin-Phillips-Terlevich) excitation diagram. We study spatially resolved emission line maps to examine evidence for active galactic nuclei (AGN), shocks, diffuse i…

We use observations from the GEMINI-N/GMOS integral-field spectrograph (IFS) to obtain spatially resolved stellar kinematics of the central $\sim 1$ kpc of 20 early-type galaxies (ETGs) with stellar masses greater than $10^{11.7} M_\odot$ in the MASSIVE survey. Together with observations from the wide-field Mitchell IFS at McDonald Observatory in our earlier work, we obtain unprecedentedly detailed kinematic maps of local massive ETGs, covering a scale of $\sim 0.1-30$ kpc. The high ($\sim 120$) signal-to-noise of the GMOS spectra enable us to obtain two-dimensional maps of the line-of-sight v…

Context. The formation and evolution of galaxies appear linked to the growth of supermassive black holes, as evidenced by empirical scaling relations in nearby galaxies. Understanding this co-evolution over cosmic time requires the revelation of the dynamical state of galaxies and the measurement of the mass of their central black holes (MBH) at a range of cosmic distances. Bright active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are ideal for this purpose. Aims. The High Angular Resolution Monolithic Optical and Near-infrared Integral field spectrograph (HARMONI), the first light integral-field spectrograph for …
We map the optical and near-infrared (NIR) emission-line flux distributions and kinematics of the inner 320$\times$535pc$^2$ of the elliptical galaxy NGC1052. The integral field spectra were obtained with the Gemini Telescope using the GMOS-IFU and NIFS instruments, with angular resolutions of 0''88 and 0''1 in the optical and NIR, respectively. We detect five kinematic components: (1 and 2) Two spatially unresolved components, being a broad line region visible in H$α$, with a FWHM of $\sim$3200km s$^{-1}$ and an intermediate-broad component seen in the [OIII]$λλ$4959,5007 doublet; (3) an exte…
In this work, we explore the diversity of ionised gas kinematics (rotational velocity $v_ϕ$ and velocity dispersion $σ_{\mathrm{g}}$) and gas-phase metallicity gradients at $0.1 \leq z \leq 2.5$ using a compiled data set of 74 galaxies resolved with ground-based integral field spectroscopy. We find that galaxies with the highest and the lowest $σ_{\mathrm{g}}$ have preferentially flat metallicity gradients, whereas those with intermediate values of $σ_{\mathrm{g}}$ show a large scatter in the metallicity gradients. Additionally, steep negative gradients appear almost only in rotation-dominated…
We present spatially-resolved stellar kinematics of the well-studied ultra diffuse galaxy (UDG) Dragonfly 44, as determined from 25.3 hrs of observations with the Keck Cosmic Web Imager. The luminosity-weighted dispersion within the half-light radius is $σ_{1/2}=33^{+3}_{-3}$ km/s. There is no evidence for rotation, with $V/σ<0.12$ (90% confidence) along the major axis, in apparent conflict with models where UDGs are the high-spin tail of the normal dwarf galaxy distribution. The spatially-averaged line profile is more peaked than a Gaussian, with Gauss-Hermite coefficient $h_4=0.13\pm 0.05$. …

We present a comprehensive analysis of the multi-phase structure of the interstellar medium (ISM) and the stellar kinematics in the edge-on nearby galaxy UGC 10205 using integral field spectroscopy (IFS) data taken with MEGARA at the GTC. We explore both the neutral and the ionized gas phases using the interstellar Na ${\small I}$ D doublet absorption (LR$-$V set-up, R $\sim$ 6000) and the H$α$ emission line (HR$-$R set-up, R $\sim$ 18000), respectively. The high-resolution data show the complexity of the H$α$ emission line profile revealing the detection of up to three kinematically distinct …
We present simulated observations of gas kinematics in galaxies formed in 10 pc resolution cosmological simulations with the hydrodynamical + N-body code RAMSES, using the new RAMSES2HSIM pipeline with the simulated observing pipeline (HSIM) for the ELT HARMONI IFU spectrograph. We post-process the galaxy's gas kinematics and Hα line emission for each simulation cell, and integrate the emission to produce an extinction-corrected input cube. We then simulate observations of the input cube with HARMONI, for a range of exposure times, spatial sampling, and spectral resolution. We analyze the mock…
Our understanding of the structure, composition and evolution of galaxies has strongly improved in the last decades, mostly due to new results based on large spectroscopic and imaging surveys. In particular, the nature of ionized gas, its ionization mechanisms, its relation with the stellar properties and chemical composition, the existence of scaling relations that describe the cycle between stars and gas, and the corresponding evolution patterns have been widely explored and described. More recently, the introduction of additional techniques, in particular Integral Field Spectroscopy, and th…

We present the results of our spatially resolved investigation into the interplay between the ages of the stellar populations and the kinematics of the warm ionised outflows in the well-studied type II quasar Markarian 34. Utilising IFS data, we determine the spatial distribution of the young stellar population (YSP; $t_{ysp} < 100 \mbox{ Myr}$) using spectral synthesis modelling. We also employ the $\mbox{[OIII]}λ5007$ emission line as a tracer of the warm ionised gas kinematics. We demonstrate a spatial correlation between the outer edges of the blue-side of the outflow and an enhancement in…
A Redshift Survey of the Nearby Galaxy Cluster Abell 2199: Comparison of the Spatial and Kinematic Distributions of Galaxies with the Intracluster Medium
We investigate the Tully-Fisher Relation (TFR) for a morphologically and kine- matically diverse sample of galaxies from the SAMI Galaxy Survey using 2 dimensional spatially resolved Halpha velocity maps and find a well defined relation across the stellar mass range of 8.0 < log(M*) < 11.5. We use an adaptation of kinemetry to parametrise the kinematic Halpha asymmetry of all galaxies in the sample, and find a correlation between scatter (i.e. residuals off the TFR) and asymmetry. This effect is pronounced at low stellar mass, corresponding to the inverse relationship between stellar mass and …
The existence of a spatially resolved Star-Forming Main Sequence (rSFMS) and a spatially resolved Mass-Metallicity Relation (rMZR) is now well established for local galaxies. Moreover, gradients with metallicity decreasing with radius seem to be common in local disc galaxies. These observations suggest that galaxy formation is a self-regulating process, and provide constraints for galaxy evolution models. Studying the evolution of these relations at higher redshifts is still however very challenging. In this paper, we analyse three gravitationally lensed galaxies at z = 0.6, 0.7 and 1, observe…
We characterise ionised gas outflows using a large sample of ~330 high-luminosity (45.5 < log(L_bol/erg s^-1) < 49.0), high-redshift (1.5 < z < 4.0) quasars via their [OIII]4960,5008 emission. The median velocity width of the [OIII] emission line is 1540 kms^-1, increasing with increasing quasar luminosity. Broad, blue-shifted wings are seen in the [OIII] profiles of 42 per cent of the sample. Rest-frame ultraviolet spectra with well-characterised CIV 1550 emission line properties are available for more than 210 quasars, allowing an investigation of the relationship between the Broad Line Regi…
We present detailed observations of photoionization conditions and galaxy kinematics in eleven z$=1.39-2.59$ radio-loud quasar host galaxies. Data was taken with OSIRIS integral field spectrograph (IFS) and the adaptive optics system at the W.M. Keck Observatory that targeted nebular emission lines (H$β$,[OIII],H$α$,[NII]) redshifted into the near-infrared (1-2.4 \micron). We detect extended ionized emission on scales ranging from 1-30 kpc photoionized by stars, shocks, and active galactic nuclei (AGN). Spatially resolved emission-line ratios indicate that our systems reside off the star forma…
We investigate how HII region temperature structure assumptions affect "direct-method" spatially-resolved metallicity observations using multispecies auroral lines in a galaxy from the SAMI Galaxy Survey. SAMI609396B, at redshift $z=0.018$, is a low-mass galaxy in a minor merger with intense star formation, analogous to conditions at high redshifts. We use three methods to derive direct metallicities and compare with strong-line diagnostics. The spatial metallicity trends show significant differences among the three direct methods. Our first method is based on the commonly used electron temper…
