We present spatially-resolved two-dimensional maps and radial trends of the stellar populations and kinematics for a sample of six compact elliptical galaxies (cE) using spectroscopy from the Keck Cosmic Web Imager (KCWI). We recover their star formation histories, finding that all except one of our cEs are old and metal rich, with both age and metallicity decreasing toward their outer radii. We also use the integrated values within one effective radius to study different scaling relations. Comparing our cEs with others from the literature and from simulations we reveal the formation channel that these galaxies might have followed. All our cEs are fast rotators, with relatively high rotation values given their low ellipticites. In general, the properties of our cEs are very similar to those seen in the cores of more massive galaxies, and in particular, to massive compact galaxies. Five out of our six cEs are the result of stripping a more massive (compact or extended) galaxy, and only one cE is compatible with having been formed intrinsically as the low-mass, compact object that we see today. These results further confirm that cEs are a mixed-bag of galaxies that can be formed following different formation channels, reporting for the first time an evolutionary link within the realm of compact galaxies (at all stellar masses).
With a metallicity of 12 + Log(O/H) $\approx$ 7.1-7.2, I Zw 18 is a canonical low-metallicity blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxy. A growing number of BCDs, including I Zw 18, have been found to host strong, narrow-lined, nebular He II ($λ$4686) emission with enhanced intensities compared to H$β$ (e.g., He II($λ$4686)/H$β$ > 1%). We present new observations of I Zw 18 using the Keck Cosmic Web Imager. These observations reveal two nebular He II emission regions (or He III regions) northwest and southeast of the He III region in the galaxy's main body investigated in previous studies. All regions e…
We study the kinematics of the giant H II regions NGC 5455 and NGC 5471 located in the galaxy M101, using integral field observations that include the Hbeta and [O III] 5007 emission lines, obtained with the Keck Cosmic Web Imager. We analyse the line profiles using both single and multiple Gaussian curves, gathering evidence for the presence of several expanding shells and moving filaments. The line decomposition shows that a broad (sigma = 30-50 km/s) underlying component is ubiquitous, extending across hundreds of pc, while a large fraction of the narrow components have subsonic line widths…

Using the Keck Cosmic Web Imager we obtain spectra of several globular clusters (GCs), ultra compact dwarfs (UCDs) and the inner halo starlight of M87, at a similar projected galactocentric radius of $\sim$5 kpc. This enables us, for the first time, to apply the same stellar population analysis to the GCs, UCDs and starlight consistently to derive ages, metallicities and alpha-element abundances in M87. We find evidence for a dual stellar population in the M87 halo light, i.e an $\sim$80\% component by mass which is old and metal-rich and a $\sim$20\% component which is old but metal-poor. Two…
The Palomar Cosmic Web Imager (PCWI) and Keck Cosmic Web Imager (KCWI) are integral-field spectrographs on the Hale 5m telescope at Palomar Observatory and the Keck-2 10m telescope at W. M. Keck Observatory, respectively. In recent years, these instruments have been increasingly used to conduct survey work; in particular focused on the circumgalactic and intergalactic media at high redshift. Extracting faint signals from three-dimensional IFU data is a complex task which can become prohibitively difficult for large samples without the proper tools. We present CWITools, a package written in Pyt…
Motivated by the recent discovery of the near-ubiquity of Ly$α$ emission around $z \gtrsim 3$ QSOs, we performed a systematic study of QSO circumgalactic Ly$α$ emission at $z\approx2$, utilizing the unique capability of the Keck Cosmic Web Imager (KCWI) -- a new wide-field, blue sensitive integral-field spectrograph (IFU). In this paper, we present KCWI observations on a sample of 16 ultraluminous Type-I QSOs at $z=2.1-2.3$ with ionizing luminosities of $L_{\rm{ν_{\rm{LL}}}}=10^{31.1-32.3}$ erg s$^{-1}$ Hz$^{-1}$. We found that 14 out of 16 QSOs are associated with Ly$α$ nebulae with projected…
The ultra-diffuse galaxy in the NGC 5846 group (NGC 5846_UDG1) was shown to have a large number of globular cluster (GC) candidates from deep imaging as part of the VEGAS survey. Recently, Muller et al. published a velocity dispersion, based on a dozen of its GCs. Within their quoted uncertainties, the resulting dynamical mass allowed for either a dark matter free or a dark matter dominated galaxy. Here we present spectra from KCWI which reconfirms membership of the NGC 5846 group and reveals a stellar velocity dispersion for UDG1 of $σ_{GC}$ = 17 $\pm$ 2 km/s. Our dynamical mass, with a reduc…

We present new observations of Lyman-$α$ (Ly$α$) Blob 1 (LAB1) in the SSA22 protocluster region ($z$ = 3.09) using the Keck Cosmic Web Imager (KCWI) and the Keck Multi-object Spectrometer for Infrared Exploration (MOSFIRE). By applying matched filtering to the KCWI datacube, we have created a narrow-band Ly$α$ image and identified several prominent features. By comparing the spatial distributions and intensities of Ly$α$ and H$β$, we find that recombination of photo-ionized HI gas followed by resonant scattering is sufficient to explain all the observed Ly$α$/H$β$ ratios. We further decode the…
We present Keck Cosmic Web Imager (KCWI) integral field spectroscopy (IFS) observations of rest-frame UV emission lines $\rm Lyα$, C IV $λλ$ 1548 Å, 1550Åand He II 1640 Åobserved in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of two $z=2$ radio-loud quasar host galaxies. We detect extended emission on 80-90 kpc scale in $\rm Lyα$ in both systems with C IV, and He II emission also detected out to 30-50 kpc. All emission lines show kinematics with a blue and redshifted gradient pattern consistent with velocities seen in massive dark matter halos and similar to kinematic patterns of inflowing gas seen in hyd…
We present high resolution spectroscopy taken with the Keck Echellete Spectrograph and Imager to measure stellar velocity dispersions for eight active dwarf galaxies ($M_{\ast}<3\times10^{9}~M_{\odot}$) with virial black hole masses. We double the number of systems in this stellar mass regime with measurements of both black hole mass ($M_{\rm BH}$) and stellar velocity dispersion ($σ_{\ast}$), and place them on the $M_{\rm BH}-σ_{\ast}$ relation. The tight relation between $M_{\rm BH}$ and $σ_{\ast}$ for higher mass galaxies is a strong piece of evidence for the co-evolution of BHs and their h…
We present a survey of the central region of the nearest starburst galaxy, IC 10, using the W. M. Keck Observatory Keck Cosmic Web Imager (KCWI) at high spectral and spatial resolution. We map the central starburst of IC 10 to sample the kinematic and ionization properties of the individual star-forming regions. Using the low spectral resolution mode of KCWI we map the oxygen abundance and with the high spectral resolution mode we identify 46 individual H II regions. These H II regions have an average radius of 4.0 pc, star formation rate $\sim1.3\times10^{-4}$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$, and velocit…
We present the first statistical analysis of kinematically-resolved, spatially-extended Ly$α$ emission around $z = 2-3$ galaxies in the Keck Baryonic Structure Survey (KBSS) using the Keck Cosmic Web Imager (KCWI). Our sample of 59 star-forming galaxies ($z_\mathrm{med} = 2.29$) comprises the subset with typical KCWI integration times of ~5 hours and with existing imaging data from the Hubble Space Telescope and/or adaptive optics-assisted integral field spectroscopy. The high resolution images were used to evaluate the azimuthal dependence of the diffuse Ly$α$ emission with respect to the ste…
