We present a framework to build realistic mock spectroscopic observations for state-of-the-art hydrodynamical simulations, using high spectral resolution stellar population models and full radiative transfer treatment with SKIRT. As a first application we generate stellar continuum mock observations for the Auriga cosmological zoom simulations emulating integral-field observations from the SAMI Galaxy survey. We perform spectral fitting on our synthetic cubes and compute the resulting rotation velocity ($V_{\rm{rot}}$) and velocity dispersion within 1$R_{\text{e}}$ ($σ_{\text{e}}$) for a sub-set of the Auriga sample. We find that the kinematics produced by Auriga are in good agreement with the observations from the SAMI Galaxy survey after taking into account the effects of dust and the systematics produced by the observation limitations. We also explore the effects of seeing convolution, inclination, and attenuation on the line-of-sight velocity distribution. For highly inclined galaxies, these effects can lead to an artificial decrease in the measured $V/σ$ by nearly a factor two (after inclination correction). We also demonstrate the utility of our method for high-redshift galaxies by emulating spatially resolved continuum spectra from the LEGA-C survey and, looking forward, E-ELT HARMONI. Our framework represents a crucial link between the ground truth for stellar populations and kinematics in simulations and the observed stellar continuum observations at low and high redshift.
We have observed an N-body/Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics simulation of a Milky Way like barred spiral galaxy. We present a simple method that samples N-body model particles into mock Gaia stellar observations and takes into account stellar populations, dust extinction and Gaia's science performance estimates. We examine the kinematics around a nearby spiral arm at a similar position to the Perseus arm at three lines of sight in the disc plane; (l,b)=(90,0), (120,0) and (150,0) degrees. We find that the structure of the peculiar kinematics around the co-rotating spiral arm, which is found in …
We present SimSpin, a new, public, software framework for generating integral field spectroscopy (IFS) data cubes from N-body/hydrodynamical simulations of galaxies, which can be compared directly with observational datasets. SimSpin provides a consistent method for studying a galaxy's stellar component. It can be used to explore how observationally inferred measurements of kinematics, such as the spin parameter $λ_R$, are impacted by the effects of, for example, inclination, seeing conditions, distance, etc. SimSpin is written in R and has been designed to be highly modular, flexible, and ext…

Early-type galaxies (ETGs) possess total density profiles close to isothermal, which can lead to non-Gaussian line-of-sight velocity dispersion (LOSVD) under anisotropic stellar orbits. However, recent observations of local ETGs in the MASSIVE Survey reveal outer kinematic structures at $1.5 R_{\mathrm{eff}}$ (effective radius) that are inconsistent with fixed isothermal density profiles; the authors proposed varying density profiles as an explanation. We aim to verify this conjecture and understand the influence of stellar assembly on these kinematic features through mock ETGs in IllustrisTNG…

Stellar halos and globular cluster (GC) systems contain valuable information regarding the assembly history of their host galaxies. Motivated by the detection of a significant rotation signal in the outer halo GC system of M31, we investigate the likelihood of detecting such a rotation signal in projection, using cosmological simulations. To this end we select subsets of tagged particles in the halos of the Aquarius simulations to represent mock GC systems, and analyse their kinematics. We find that GC systems can exhibit a non-negligible rotation signal provided the associated stellar halo al…
The open source SKIRT Monte Carlo radiative transfer code has been used for more than 15 years to model the interaction between radiation and dust in various astrophysical systems. In this work, we present version 9 of the code, which has been substantially redesigned to support long-term objectives. We invite interested readers to participate in the development, testing and application of new features such as including gas media types in addition to dust, performing line transfer in addition to continuum radiation transfer, and modeling polarization by non-spherical dust grains aligned by mag…
As we enter a golden age for studies of internal kinematics and dynamics of Galactic globular clusters (GCs), it is timely to assess the performance of modelling techniques in recovering the mass, mass profile, and other dynamical properties of GCs. Here, we compare different mass-modelling techniques (distribution-function (DF)-based models, Jeans models, and a grid of N-body models) by applying them to mock observations from a star-by-star N-body simulation of the GC M 4 by Heggie. The mocks mimic existing and anticipated data for GCs: surface brightness or number density profiles, local ste…
Through synthetic observations of a hydrodynamical simulation of an evolving star-forming region, we assess how the choice of observational techniques affects the measurements of properties which trace star formation. Testing and calibrating observational measurements requires synthetic observations which are as realistic as possible. In this part of the paper series (Paper I), we explore different techniques for how to map the distributions of densities and temperatures from the particle-based simulations onto a Voronoi mesh suitable for radiative transfer and consequently explore their accur…
Extending the simulations of intermediate-mass black hole mass measurements to Virgo Cluster using ELT/HARMONI high resolution integral-field stellar kinematics
Context: We present COSTA (COld STream finder Algorithm), a novel algorithm to search for cold kinematical substructures in the phase space of planetary nebulae (PNe) and globular clusters (GCs) in the halo of massive galaxies and intracluster regions. Aims: COSTA aims at detecting small sized, low velocity dispersion streams, as the ones produced in recent interactions of dwarf galaxies with the halo of more massive galaxies, including the ones sitting in the central region of rich galaxy clusters. Methods: COSTA is based on a deep friend-of-friend procedure that isolates groups of N particle…

Comparing the VANDELS sample to a zoom-in Radiative Hydrodynamical Simulation: using the Si II and C II line spectra as tracers of galaxy evolution and Lyman Continuum leakage
We present new spectroscopic observations of Lyman-$α$ (Ly$α$) Blob 2 ($z \sim$ 3.1). We observed extended Ly$α$ emission in three distinct regions, where the highest Ly$α$ surface brightness (SB) center is far away from the known continuum sources. We searched through the MOSFIRE slits that cover the high Ly$α$ SB regions, but were unable to detect any significant nebular emission near the highest SB center. We further mapped the flux ratio of the blue peak to the red peak and found it is anti-correlated with Ly$α$ SB with a power-law index of $\sim$ -0.4. We used radiative transfer models wi…

We present $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, and C$^{18}$O data as the next major release for the CHaMP project, an unbiased sample of Galactic molecular clouds in $l$ = 280$^{\circ}$-300$^{\circ}$. From a radiative transfer analysis, we self-consistently compute 3D cubes of optical depth, excitation temperature, and column density for $\sim$300 massive clumps, and update the $I_{\rm CO}$-dependent CO$\rightarrow$H$_2$ conversion law of Barnes et al (2015). For $N$ $\propto$ $I^p$, we find $p$ = 1.92$\pm$0.05 for the velocity-resolved conversion law aggregated over all clumps. A practical, integrated conv…

In recent years integral-field spectroscopic surveys have revealed that the presence of kinematically decoupled stellar components is not a rare phenomenon in nearby galaxies. However, complete statistics are still lacking because they depend on the detection limit of these objects. We investigate the kinematic signatures of two large-scale counter-rotating stellar disks in mock integral-field spectroscopic data to address their detection limits as a function of the galaxy properties and instrumental setup. We built a set of mock data of two large-scale counter-rotating stellar disks as if the…
We explore how observations relate to the physical properties of the emitting galaxies by post-processing a pair of merging $z\sim2$ galaxies from the cosmological, hydrodynamical simulation NewHorizon using LCARS (Light from Cloudy Added to RAMSES) to encode the physical properties of the simulated galaxy into H$α$ emission line. By carrying out mock observations and analysis on these data cubes we ascertain which physical properties of the galaxy will be recoverable with the HARMONI spectrograph on the European Extremely Large Telescope (ELT). We are able to estimate the galaxy's star format…
We present new observations of Lyman-$α$ (Ly$α$) Blob 1 (LAB1) in the SSA22 protocluster region ($z$ = 3.09) using the Keck Cosmic Web Imager (KCWI) and the Keck Multi-object Spectrometer for Infrared Exploration (MOSFIRE). By applying matched filtering to the KCWI datacube, we have created a narrow-band Ly$α$ image and identified several prominent features. By comparing the spatial distributions and intensities of Ly$α$ and H$β$, we find that recombination of photo-ionized HI gas followed by resonant scattering is sufficient to explain all the observed Ly$α$/H$β$ ratios. We further decode the…
We present a series of 20 cosmological zoom simulations of the formation of massive galaxies with and without a model for AGN feedback. Differences in stellar population and kinematic properties are evaluated by constructing mock integral field unit (IFU) maps. The impact of the AGN is weak at high redshift when all systems are mostly fast-rotating and disc-like. After $z \sim 1$ the AGN simulations result in lower mass, older, less metal rich and slower rotating systems with less disky isophotes - in general agreement with observations. Two-dimensional kinematic maps of in-situ and accreted s…

We present mock optical images, broad-band and H$α$ fluxes, and D4000 spectral indices for 30,145 galaxies from the EAGLE hydrodynamical simulation at redshift $z=0.1$, modelling dust with the SKIRT Monte Carlo radiative transfer code. The modelling includes a subgrid prescription for dusty star-forming regions, with both the subgrid obscuration of these regions and the fraction of metals in diffuse interstellar dust calibrated against far-infrared fluxes of local galaxies. The predicted optical colours as a function of stellar mass agree well with observation, with the SKIRT model showing mar…
We study the relationship between supermassive black hole (BH) feedback, BH luminosity and the kinematics of stars and gas for galaxies in IllustrisTNG. We use a sample of galaxies with mock MaNGA observations to identify kinematic misalignment at $z=0$ (difference in rotation of stars and gas), for which we follow the evolutionary history of BH activity and gas properties over the last 8 Gyrs. Misaligned low mass galaxies typically have boosted BH luminosity, BH growth and have had more energy injected into the gas over the last 8 Gyr in comparison to aligned galaxies. These properties likely…
We present simulated observations of gas kinematics in galaxies formed in 10 pc resolution cosmological simulations with the hydrodynamical + N-body code RAMSES, using the new RAMSES2HSIM pipeline with the simulated observing pipeline (HSIM) for the ELT HARMONI IFU spectrograph. We post-process the galaxy's gas kinematics and Hα line emission for each simulation cell, and integrate the emission to produce an extinction-corrected input cube. We then simulate observations of the input cube with HARMONI, for a range of exposure times, spatial sampling, and spectral resolution. We analyze the mock…
To determine the importance of merging galaxies to galaxy evolution, it is necessary to design classification tools that can identify different types and stages of merging galaxies. Previously, using GADGET-3/SUNRISE simulations of merging galaxies and linear discriminant analysis (LDA), we created an accurate merging galaxy classifier from imaging predictors. Here, we develop a complementary tool based on stellar kinematic predictors derived from the same simulation suite. We design mock stellar velocity and velocity dispersion maps to mimic the specifications of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies a…
Resonant lines are powerful probes of the interstellar and circumgalactic medium of galaxies. Their transfer in gas being a complex process, the interpretation of their observational signatures, either in absorption or in emission, is often not straightforward. Numerical radiative transfer simulations are needed to accurately describe the travel of resonant line photons in real and in frequency space, and to produce realistic mock observations. This paper introduces RASCAS, a new public 3D radiative transfer code developed to perform the propagation of any resonant line in numerical simulation…
The expected gamma-ray flux coming from dark matter annihilation in dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies depends on the so-called `J-factor', the integral of the squared dark matter density along the line-of-sight. We examine the degree to which estimates of J are sensitive to contamination (by foreground Milky Way stars and stellar streams) of the stellar-kinematic samples that are used to infer dark matter densities in `ultrafaint' dSphs. Applying standard kinematic analyses to hundreds of mock data sets that include varying levels of contamination, we find that mis-classified contaminants can c…
We have adapted our made-to-measure (M2M) algorithm PRIMAL to use mock Milky Way like data constructed from an N-body barred galaxy with a boxy bulge in a known dark matter potential. We use M0 giant stars as tracers, with the expected error of the ESA space astrometry mission Gaia. We demonstrate the process of constructing mock Gaia data from an N-body model, including the conversion of a galactocentric Cartesian coordinate N-body model into equatorial coordinates and how to add error to it for a single stellar type. We then describe the modifications made to PRIMAL to work with observationa…
Integral field spectroscopy of high-redshift galaxies has become a powerful tool for understanding their dynamics and evolutionary states. However, in the case of gravitationally lensed systems, it has proved difficult to model both lensing and intrinsic kinematics in a way that takes full advantage of the information available in the spectral domain. In this paper, we introduce a new method for pixel-based source reconstruction that alters standard regularization schemes for two-dimensional data in a way that leverages kinematic information in a physically motivated but flexible fashion, and …
[Context] Recent detections of disks around young high-mass stars support the idea of massive star formation through accretion rather than coalescence, but the detailed kinematics in the equatorial region of the disk candidates is not well known, which limits our understanding of the accretion process. [Aims] This paper explores the kinematics of the gas around a young massive star with millimeter-wave interferometry to improve our understanding of the formation of massive stars though accretion. [Methods] We use Plateau de Bure interferometric images to probe the environment of the nearby (~1…

We present a kinematic study of ionised extraplanar gas in two low-inclination late-type galaxies (NGC 3982 and NGC 4152) using integral field spectroscopy data from the DiskMass H$α$ sample. We first isolate the extraplanar gas emission by masking the H$α$ flux from the regularly rotating disc. The extraplanar gas emission is then modelled in the three-dimensional position-velocity domain using a parametric model described by three structural and four kinematic parameters. Best-fit values for the model are determined via a Bayesian MCMC approach. The reliability and accuracy of our modelling …
We present the first asymmetric drift (AD) measurements for unresolved stellar populations of different characteristic ages above and below 1.5 Gyr. These measurements sample the age-velocity relation (AVR) in galaxy disks. In this first paper we develop two efficient algorithms to extract AD on a spaxel-by-spaxel basis from optical integral-field spectroscopic (IFS) data-cubes. The algorithms apply different spectral templates, one using simple stellar populations and the other a stellar library; their comparison allows us to assess systematic errors in derived multi-component velocities, suc…
We describe the dynamical evolution of a unique type of dark star cluster model in which the majority of the cluster mass at Hubble time is dominated by an intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH). We analyzed results from about 2000 star cluster models (Survey Database I) simulated using the Monte-Carlo code MOCCA and identified these dark star cluster models. Taking one of these models, we apply the method of simulating realistic "mock observations" by utilizing the COCOA and SISCO codes to obtain the photometric and kinematic observational properties of the dark star cluster model at 12 Gyr. We …

Cosmological growth can be measured in the redshift space clustering of galaxies targeted by spectroscopic surveys. Accurate prediction of clustering of galaxies will require understanding galaxy physics which is a very hard and highly non-linear problem. Approximate models of redshift space distortion (RSD) take a perturbative approach to solve the evolution of dark matter and galaxies in the universe. In this paper we focus on eBOSS emission line galaxies (ELGs) which live in intermediate mass haloes. We create a series of mock catalogues using haloes from the Multidark and {\sc Outer Rim} d…
The local escape velocity provides valuable inputs to the mass profile of the Galaxy, and requires understanding the tail of the stellar speed distribution. Following Leonard $\&$ Tremaine (1990), various works have since modeled the tail of the stellar speed distribution as $\propto (v_{\rm{esc}} -v)^k$, where $v_{\rm{esc}}$ is the escape velocity, and $k$ is the slope of the distribution. In such studies, however, these two parameters were found to be largely degenerate and often a narrow prior is imposed on $k$ in order to constrain $v_{\rm{esc}}$. Furthermore, the validity of the power law…
The kinematics of satellite galaxies moving in a dark matter halo are a direct probe of the underlying gravitational potential. Thus, the phase-space distributions of satellites represent a powerful tool to determine the galaxy-halo connection from observations. By stacking the signal of a large number of satellite galaxies this potential can be unlocked even for haloes hosting a few satellites on average. In this work, we test the impact of various modelling assumptions on constraints derived from analysing satellite phase-space distributions in the non-linear, 1-halo regime. We discuss their…
