This work presents the Globular cluster Extra-tidal Mock Star (GEMS) catalogue of extra-tidal stars and binaries created via three-body dynamical encounters in globular cluster cores. Using the particle-spray code Corespray, we sample N=50,000 extra-tidal stars and escaped recoil binaries for 159 Galactic globular clusters. Sky positions, kinematics, stellar properties and escape information are provided for all simulated stars. Stellar orbits are integrated in seven different static and time-varying Milky Way gravitational potential models where the structure of the disc, perturbations from the Large Magellanic Cloud and the mass and sphericity of the Milky Way's dark matter halo are all investigated. We find that the action coordinates of the mock extra-tidal stars are largely Galactic model independent, where minor offsets and broadening of the distributions between models are likely due to interactions with substructure. Importantly, we also report the first evidence for stellar stream contamination by globular cluster core stars and binaries for clusters with pericentre radii larger than five kiloparsecs. Finally, we provide a quantitative tool that uses action coordinates to match field stars to host clusters with probabilities. Ultimately, combining data from the GEMS catalogue with information of observed stars will allow for association of extra-tidal field stars with any Galactic globular cluster; a requisite tool for understanding population-level dynamics and evolution of clusters in the Milky Way.
We present the first results from the GeMS/GSAOI Galactic Globular Cluster Survey (G4CS) of the Milky-Way globular clusters (GCs) NGC 3201 and NGC 2298. Using the Gemini South Adaptive Optics Imager (GSAOI), in tandem with the Gemini Multi-conjugate adaptive optics System (GeMS) on the 8.1-meter Gemini-South telescope, we collected deep near-IR observations of both clusters, resolving their constituent stellar populations down to $K_s\simeq21$ Vega mag. Point spread function (PSF) photometry was performed on the data using spatially-variable PSFs to generate $JHK_{s}$ photometric catalogues fo…
We present one thousand mock galaxy catalogues for the analysis of the Low Redshift Sample (LOWZ, effective redshift z ~ 10.32) of the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey Data Releases 10 and 11. These mocks have been created following the PTHalos method of Manera13 et al. (2013) revised to include new developments. The main improvement is the introduction of a redshift dependence in the Halo Occupation Distribution in order to account for the change of the galaxy number density with redshift. These mock catalogues are used in the analyses of the LOWZ galaxy clustering by the BOSS collabor…
Mock Observatory: two thousand lightcone mock catalogues of luminous red galaxies from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Survey for the cosmological large-scale analysis
We present a method to build mock galaxy catalogues starting from a halo catalogue that uses halo occupation distribution (HOD) recipes as well as the subhalo abundance matching (SHAM) technique. Combining both prescriptions we are able to push the absolute magnitude of the resulting catalogue to fainter luminosities than using just the SHAM technique and can interpret our results in terms of the HOD modelling. We optimize the method by populating with galaxies friends-of-friends dark matter haloes extracted from the Marenostrum Institut de Ciències de l'Espai (MICE) dark matter simulations an…
We present and analyse mock stellar catalogues that match the selection criteria and observables (including uncertainties) of the Gaia satellite data release 2 (DR2). The source are six cosmological high-resolution magneto-hydrodynamic $Λ$CDM zoom simulations of the formation of Milky Way analogues from the AURIGA project. Mock data are provided for stars with $V < 16$ mag, and $V < 20$ mag at $|b|>20$ degrees. The mock catalogues are made using two different methods: the public SNAPDRAGONS code, and a method based on that of Lowing et al. that preserves the phase-space distribution of the mod…
We present a new technique for creating mock catalogues of the individual stars that make up the accreted component of stellar haloes in cosmological simulations and show how the catalogues can be used to test and interpret observational data. The catalogues are constructed from a combination of methods. A semi-analytic galaxy formation model is used to calculate the star formation history in haloes in an N-body simulation and dark matter particles are tagged with this stellar mass. The tags are converted into individual stars using a stellar population synthesis model to obtain the number den…
The use of realistic mock galaxy catalogues is essential in the preparation of large galaxy surveys, in order to test and validate theoretical models and to assess systematics. We present an updated version of the mock catalogue constructed from the Millennium-XXL simulation, which uses a halo occupation distribution (HOD) method to assign galaxies r-band magnitudes and g-r colours. We have made several modifications to the mock to improve the agreement with measurements from the SDSS and GAMA surveys. We find that cubic interpolation, which was used to build the original halo lightcone, produ…
In this series of papers, we employ several machine learning (ML) methods to classify the point-like sources from the miniJPAS catalogue, and identify quasar candidates. Since no representative sample of spectroscopically confirmed sources exists at present to train these ML algorithms, we rely on mock catalogues. In this first paper we develop a pipeline to compute synthetic photometry of quasars, galaxies and stars using spectra of objects targeted as quasars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. To match the same depths and signal-to-noise ratio distributions in all bands expected for miniJPAS p…
In this first paper we simulate the population of disc Red Clump stars to be observed by Gaia. We generate a set of test particles and we evolve it in a 3D barred Milky Way like galactic potential. We assign physical properties of the Red Clump trace population and a realistic 3D interstellar extinction model. We add Gaia observational constraints and an error model according to the pre-commissioning scientific performance assessments. We present and analyse two mock catalogues, offered to the community, that are an excellent test bed for testing tools being developed for the future scientific…

We introduce the Theoretical Astrophysical Observatory (TAO), an online virtual laboratory that houses mock observations of galaxy survey data. Such mocks have become an integral part of the modern analysis pipeline. However, building them requires an expert knowledge of galaxy modelling and simulation techniques, significant investment in software development, and access to high performance computing. These requirements make it difficult for a small research team or individual to quickly build a mock catalogue suited to their needs. To address this TAO offers access to multiple cosmological s…
This article is the second in a series in which we perform an extensive comparison of various galaxy-based cluster mass estimation techniques that utilise the positions, velocities and colours of galaxies. Our aim is to quantify the scatter, systematic bias and completeness of cluster masses derived from a diverse set of 25 galaxy-based methods using two contrasting mock galaxy catalogues based on a sophisticated halo occupation model and a semi-analytic model. Analysing 968 clusters, we find a wide range in the RMS errors in log M200c delivered by the different methods (0.18 to 1.08 dex, i.e.…
We present a mock image catalogue of ~100,000 MUV=-22.5 to -19.6 mag galaxies at z=7-12 from the BlueTides cosmological simulation. We create mock images of each galaxy with the James Webb (JWST), Hubble, Roman, and Euclid Space Telescopes, as well as Subaru, and VISTA, with a range of near- and mid-infrared filters. We perform photometry on the mock images to estimate the success of these instruments for detecting high-z galaxies. We predict that JWST will have unprecedented power in detecting high-z galaxies, with a 95% completeness limit at least 2.5 magnitudes fainter than VISTA and Subaru…

In the context of the upcoming SRG/eROSITA survey, we present an N-body simulation-based mock catalogue for X-ray selected AGN samples. The model reproduces the observed hard X-ray AGN luminosity function (XLF) and the soft X-ray logN-logS from redshift 0 to 6. The XLF is reproduced to within $\pm5\%$ and the logN-logS to within $\pm20\%$. We develop a joint X-ray -- optical extinction and classification model. We adopt a set of empirical spectral energy distributions to predict observed magnitudes in the UV, optical and NIR. With the latest eROSITA all sky survey sensitivity model, we create …
The high-precision measurement of spatial clustering of emission line galaxies (ELGs) is a primary objective for upcoming cosmological spectroscopic surveys. The source of strong emission of ELGs is nebular emission from surrounding ionized gas irradiated by massive short-lived stars in star-forming galaxies. As a result, ELGs are more likely to reside in newly-formed halos and this leads to a nonlinear relation between ELG number density and matter density fields. In order to estimate the covariance matrix of cosmological observables, it is essential to produce many independent realisations t…

We characterize the selection function of RAVE using 2MASS as our underlying population, which we assume represents all stars which could have potentially been observed. We evaluate the completeness fraction as a function of position, magnitude, and color in two ways: first, on a field-by-field basis, and second, in equal-size areas on the sky. Then, we consider the effect of the RAVE stellar parameter pipeline on the final resulting catalogue, which in principle limits the parameter space over which our selection function is valid. Our final selection function is the product of the completene…
We present a mock catalogue for the Physics of the Accelerating Universe Survey (PAUS) and use it to quantify the competitiveness of the narrow band imaging for measuring spectral features and galaxy clustering. The mock agrees with observed number count and redshift distribution data. We demonstrate the importance of including emission lines in the narrow band fluxes. We show that PAUCam has sufficient resolution to measure the strength of the 4000Å break to the nominal PAUS depth. We predict the evolution of a narrow band luminosity function and show how this can be affected by the OII emiss…
We present a catalogue of 4499 groups and clusters of galaxies from the first data release of the multi-filter (5 broad, 7 narrow) Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS). These groups and clusters are distributed over 273 deg$^2$ in the Stripe 82 region. They are found using the PzWav algorithm, which identifies peaks in galaxy density maps that have been smoothed by a cluster scale difference-of-Gaussians kernel to isolate clusters and groups. Using a simulation-based mock catalogue, we estimate the purity and completeness of cluster detections: at S/N>3.3 we define a catalogue t…
The realistic simulation of variable star populations is fundamental to determine the selection function and contamination in existing and upcoming multi-epoch surveys. We present \ellisa, a simulator that produces an ensemble of mock light curves for a population of eclipsing binaries obtained from physical and orbital parameters consistent with different galactic populations, and which considers user-supplied time sampling and photometric errors to represent any given survey. We carried out a search for eclipsing binaries in the QUEST low-galactic latitude catalogue of variable stars, spanni…
Galactic conformity is the phenomenon whereby galaxy properties exhibit excess correlations across distance than that expected if these properties only depended on halo mass. We perform a comprehensive study of conformity at low redshift using a galaxy group catalogue from the SDSS DR7 spectroscopic sample. We study correlations both between central galaxies and their satellites (1-halo), and between central galaxies in separate haloes (2-halo). We use the quenched fractions and the marked correlation function (MCF), to probe for conformity in three galaxy properties, $(g-r)$ colour, specific …
We use galaxy-galaxy lensing to study the dark matter halos surrounding a sample of Locally Brightest Galaxies (LBGs) selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We measure mean halo mass as a function of the stellar mass and colour of the central galaxy. Mock catalogues constructed from semi-analytic galaxy formation simulations demonstrate that most LBGs are the central objects of their halos, greatly reducing interpretation uncertainties due to satellite contributions to the lensing signal. Over the full stellar mass range, $10.3 < \log [M_*/M_\odot] < 11.6$, we find that passive central ga…
Mapping galaxies at low Galactic latitudes and determining their clustering status are fundamental steps in defining the large-scale structure in the nearby Universe. The VVV Near-IR Galaxy Catalogue (VVV NIRGC) allows us to explore this region in great detail. Our goal is to identify galaxy overdensities and characterize galaxy clustering in the Zone of Avoidance. We use different clustering algorithms to identify galaxy overdensities: the Voronoi tessellations, the Minimum Spanning Tree and the Ordering Points To Identify the Clustering Structure. We studied the membership, isolation, compac…
We explore the predictive power of cosmological, hydrodynamical simulations for stellar phase space substructure and velocity correlations with the Auriga simulations and Aurigaia mock-Gaia catalogues. We show that at the solar circle the Auriga simulations commonly host phase space structures in the stellar component that have constant orbital energies and arise from accreted subhaloes. These structures can persist for a few Gyrs, even after coherent streams in position space have been erased. We also explore velocity two-point correlation functions and find this diagnostic is not determinist…
Hydrodynamical cosmological simulations have recently made great advances in reproducing galaxy mass assembly over cosmic time - as often quantified from the comparison of their predicted stellar mass functions to observed stellar mass functions from data. In this paper we compare the clustering of galaxies from the hydrodynamical cosmological simulated lightcone Horizon-AGN, to clustering measurements from the VIDEO survey observations. Using mocks built from a VIDEO-like photometry, we first explore the bias introduced into clustering measurements by using stellar masses and redshifts derive…
Optical time-domain survey has been the dominant means of hunting for rare tidal disruption events (TDEs) in the past decade and remarkably advanced the TDE study. Particularly, the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) has opened the era of population studies and the upcoming Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) at the Vera Rubin Observatory (VRO) is believed to further revolutionize the field soon. Here we present the prospects of finding TDEs with another powerful survey to be performed by 2.5-metre Wide-Field Survey Telescope (WFST). The WFST, located in western China, will be the most advance…
