We present a mock catalogue for the Physics of the Accelerating Universe Survey (PAUS) and use it to quantify the competitiveness of the narrow band imaging for measuring spectral features and galaxy clustering. The mock agrees with observed number count and redshift distribution data. We demonstrate the importance of including emission lines in the narrow band fluxes. We show that PAUCam has sufficient resolution to measure the strength of the 4000Å break to the nominal PAUS depth. We predict the evolution of a narrow band luminosity function and show how this can be affected by the OII emission line. We introduce new rest frame broad bands (UV and blue) that can be derived directly from the narrow band fluxes. We use these bands along with D4000 and redshift to define galaxy samples and provide predictions for galaxy clustering measurements. We show that systematic errors in the recovery of the projected clustering due to photometric redshift errors in PAUS are significantly smaller than the expected statistical errors. The galaxy clustering on two halo scales can be recovered quantatively without correction, and all qualitative trends seen in the one halo term are recovered. In this analysis mixing between samples reduces the expected contrast between the one halo clustering of red and blue galaxies and demonstrates the importance of a mock catalogue for interpreting galaxy clustering results. The mock catalogue is available on request at https://cosmohub.pic.es/home.
Narrow-band imaging surveys allow the study of the spectral characteristics of galaxies without the need of performing their spectroscopic follow-up. In this work, we forward-model the Physics of the Accelerating Universe Survey (PAUS) narrow-band data. The aim is to improve the constraints on the spectral coefficients used to create the galaxy spectral energy distributions (SED) of the galaxy population model in Tortorelli et al. 2020. In that work, the model parameters were inferred from the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey (CFHTLS) data using Approximate Bayesian Computation (AB…
We study the consistency of the physical properties of galaxies retrieved from SED-fitting as a function of spectral resolution and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Using a selection of physically motivated star formation histories, we set up a control sample of mock galaxy spectra representing observations of the local universe in high-resolution spectroscopy, and in 56 narrow-band and 5 broad-band photometry. We fit the SEDs at these spectral resolutions and compute their corresponding the stellar mass, the mass- and luminosity-weighted age and metallicity, and the dust extinction. We study the …
The D4000 spectral break index is one of the most important features in the visible spectrum, as it is a proxy for stellar ages and is also used in galaxy classification. However, its direct measurement has always been reserved to spectroscopy. Here, we present a general method to directly measure the D4000 with narrow-band (NB) photometry; it has been validated using realistic simulations, and then evaluated with PAUS NBs, cross-matched with VIPERS spectra ($i_{\rm AB} < 22.5$, $0.562 < z < 0.967$). We also reconstruct the D4000 with the SED-fitting code CIGALE; the use of PAUS NBs instead of…
Weak gravitational lensing is a powerful probe of the dark sector, once measurement systematic errors can be controlled. In Refregier & Amara (2014), a calibration method based on forward modeling, called MCCL, was proposed. This relies on fast image simulations (e.g., UFig; Berge et al. 2013) that capture the key features of galaxy populations and measurement effects. The MCCL approach has been used in Herbel et al. (2017) to determine the redshift distribution of cosmological galaxy samples and, in the process, the authors derived a model for the galaxy population mainly based on broad-band …
We report on the discovery of SPLUS J210428.01-004934.2, an ultra metal-poor (UMP) star first identified from the narrow-band photometry of the Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS) Data Release 1, in the SDSS Stripe 82 region. Follow-up medium- and high-resolution spectroscopy (with Gemini South and Magellan-Clay, respectively) confirmed the effectiveness of the search for low-metallicity stars using the S-PLUS narrow-band photometry. At [Fe/H]=-4.03, SPLUS J2104-0049 has the lowest detected carbon abundance, A(C)=+4.34, when compared to the 34 previously known UMP stars in the …

We present the first measurements of the projected clustering and intrinsic alignments (IA) of galaxies observed by the Physics of the Accelerating Universe Survey (PAUS). With photometry in 40 narrow optical passbands ($450\rm{nm}-850\rm{nm}$), the quality of photometric redshift estimation is $σ_{z} \sim 0.01(1 + z)$ for galaxies in the $19\,\rm{deg}^{2}$ Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey (CFHTLS) W3 field, allowing us to measure the projected 3D clustering and IA for flux-limited, faint galaxies ($i < 22.5$) out to $z\sim0.8$. To measure two-point statistics, we developed, and te…
We present estimates for the size and the logarithmic slope of the disk temperature profile of the lensed quasar Q2237+0305, independent of the component velocities. These estimates are based on six epochs of multi-wavelength narrowband images from the Nordic Optical Telescope. For each pair of lensed images and each photometric band, we determine the microlensing amplitude and chromaticity using pre-existing mid-IR photometry to define the baseline for no microlensing magnification. A statistical comparison of the combined microlensing data (6 epochs $\times$ 5 narrow bands $\times$ 6 image p…

The PAU Survey (PAUS) is an innovative photometric survey with 40 narrow bands at the William Herschel Telescope (WHT). The narrow bands are spaced at 100Å intervals covering the range 4500Å to 8500Å and, in combination with standard broad bands, enable excellent redshift precision. This paper describes the technique, galaxy templates and additional photometric calibration used to determine early photometric redshifts from PAUS. Using BCNz2, a new photometric redshift code developed for this purpose, we characterise the photometric redshift performance using PAUS data on the COSMOS field. Comp…
Photometric redshifts, which have become the cornerstone of several of the largest astronomical surveys like PanStarrs, DES, J-PAS or the LSST, require precise measurements of galaxy photometry in different bands using a consistent physical aperture. This is not trivial, due to the variation in the shape and width of the Point Spread Function (PSF) introduced by wavelength differences, instrument positions and atmospheric conditions. Current methods to correct for this effect rely on a detailed knowledge of the PSF characteristics as a function of the survey coordinates, which can be difficult…

We present -- and make publicly available -- accurate and precise photometric redshifts in the ACS footprint from the COSMOS field for objects with $i_{\mathrm{AB}}\leq 23$. The redshifts are computed using a combination of narrow band photometry from PAUS, a survey with 40 narrow bands spaced at $100Å$ intervals covering the range from $4500Å$ to $8500Å$, and 26 broad, intermediate, and narrow bands covering the UV, visible and near infrared spectrum from the COSMOS2015 catalogue. We introduce a new method that models the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) as a linear combination of continu…
We present an analysis of wide-field photometric surveys of the Palomar 5 globular cluster and its stellar stream, based on g- and r-band measures together with narrow-band DDO51 photometry. In this first study, we use the deep (g,r) data to measure the incidence of gaps and peaks along the stream. Examining the star-counts profile of the stream plus contaminating populations, we find no evidence for significant under-densities, and find only a single significant over-density. This is at odds with earlier studies based on matched-filter maps derived from shallower SDSS data if the contaminatin…
Current and future imaging surveys require photometric redshifts (photo-zs) to be estimated for millions of galaxies. Improving the photo-z quality is a major challenge but is needed to advance our understanding of cosmology. In this paper we explore how the synergies between narrow-band photometric data and large imaging surveys can be exploited to improve broadband photometric redshifts. We used a multi-task learning (MTL) network to improve broadband photo-z estimates by simultaneously predicting the broadband photo-z and the narrow-band photometry from the broadband photometry. The narrow-…
Extremely metal-poor (EMP) stars are old objects formed in the first Gyr of the Universe. They are rare and, to select them, the most successful strategy has been to build on large and low-resolution spectroscopic surveys. The combination of narrow- and broad band photometry provides a powerful and cheaper alternative to select metal-poor stars. The on-going Pristine Survey is adopting this strategy, conducting photometry with the CFHT MegaCam wide field imager and a narrow-band filter centred at 395.2 nm on the CaII-H and -K lines. In this paper we present the results of the spectroscopic fol…
We present a multi-wavelength photometric catalog in the COSMOS field as part of the observations by the Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS). The catalog is based on Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 (HST/WFC3) and Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) observations of the COSMOS field (centered at RA: $10^h00^m28^s$, Dec:$+02^{\circ}12^{\prime}21^{\prime\prime}$). The final catalog has 38671 sources with photometric data in forty two bands from UV to the infrared ($\rm \sim 0.3-8\,μm$). This includes broad-band photometry from the HST, CFHT, Subaru, VI…
Precise measurements of black hole masses are essential to understanding the coevolution of these sources and their host galaxies. We develop a novel approach for computing black hole virial masses using measurements of continuum luminosities and emission line widths from partially overlapping, narrow-band observations of quasars; we refer to this technique as single-epoch photometry. This novel method relies on forward-modelling quasar observations for estimating emission line widths, which enables unbiased measurements even for lines coarsely resolved by narrow-band data. We assess the perfo…
In this paper we introduce the \textsc{Deepz} deep learning photometric redshift (photo-$z$) code. As a test case, we apply the code to the PAU survey (PAUS) data in the COSMOS field. \textsc{Deepz} reduces the $σ_{68}$ scatter statistic by 50\% at $i_{\rm AB}=22.5$ compared to existing algorithms. This improvement is achieved through various methods, including transfer learning from simulations where the training set consists of simulations as well as observations, which reduces the need for training data. The redshift probability distribution is estimated with a mixture density network (MDN)…

Large and less-biased samples of star-forming galaxies are essential to investigate galaxy evolution. H$\rmα$ emission line is one of the most reliable tracers of star-forming galaxies because its strength is directly related to recent star formation. However, it is observationally expensive to construct large samples of H$\rmα$ emitters by spectroscopic or narrow-band imaging survey at high-redshifts. In this work, we demonstrate a method to extract H$\rmα$ fluxes of galaxies at $z=2.1$-$2.5$ from $K_s$ broad-band photometry of ZFOURGE catalog. Combined with 25-39 other filters, we estimate t…
We present a synthetic galaxy lightcone specially designed for narrow-band optical photometric surveys. To reduce time-discreteness effects, unlike previous works, we directly include the lightcone construction in the \texttt{L-Galaxies} semi-analytic model applied to the subhalo merger trees of the {\tt Millennium} simulation. Additionally, we add a model for the nebular emission in star-forming regions, which is crucial for correctly predicting the narrow/medium-band photometry of galaxies. Explicitly, we consider, individually for each galaxy, the contribution of 9 different lines: $\rm Lyα…
The Pristine survey is a narrow-band, photometric survey focused around the wavelength region of the Ca II H & K absorption lines, designed to efficiently search for extremely metal-poor stars. In this work, we use the first results of a medium-resolution spectroscopic follow-up to refine the selection criteria for finding extremely metal-poor stars ($\textrm{[Fe/H]} \leq -3.0$) in the Pristine survey. We consider methods by which stars can be selected from available broad-band and infrared photometry plus the additional Pristine narrow-band photometry. The spectroscopic sample presented in th…
We present a detailed study of the faint Milky Way satellite Draco II (Dra II) from deep CFHT/MegaCam broadband $g$ and $i$ photometry and narrow-band metallicity-sensitive CaHK observations, along with follow-up Keck II/DEIMOS multi-object spectroscopy. Forward modeling of the deep photometry allows us to refine the structural and photometric properties of Dra II: the distribution of stars in colour-magnitude space implies Dra II is old (13.5 $ \pm 0.5 $ Gyr), very metal poor, very faint ($ L_V = 180 ^{+124}_{-72} L_\odot $), and at a distance $d = 21.5 \pm 0.4$ kpc. The narrow-band, metallic…
We used UKIRT near infrared (NIR) broad band JHK photometry, narrow band imaging of the 1-0S(1) molecular hydrogen emission line and mid infrared Spitzer IRAC data to investigate the nature of the young cluster Mercer14. Foreground star counts in decontaminated NIR photometry and a comparison with the Besancon Galaxy Model are performed to estimate the cluster distance. This method yields a distance of 2.5kpc with an uncertainty of about 10% and can be applied to other young and embedded clusters. Mercer14 shows clear signs of ongoing star formation with several detected molecular hydrogen out…
We report the discovery of an occultation event in the low-luminosity narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy WPVS 007 in 2015 February and March. In concert with longer timescale variability, these observations place strong constraints on the nature and location of the absorbing material. Swift monitoring has revealed a secular decrease since ~2010 accompanied by flattening of the optical and UV photometry that suggests variable reddening. Analysis of four Hubble Space Telescope COS observations since 2010, including a Director's Discretionary time observation during the occultation, shows that the broa…
Estimating Photometric Distances to Ultracool Dwarfs in Next Generation Space-based Infrared Surveys: Synthetic Photometry and New Absolute Magnitude Versus Spectral Type Relations for JWST, Euclid, and Roman Filters
We use the Pristine survey CaHK narrow-band photometry, combined with the SDSS ugr photometry, to provide a cleaner sample of blue horizontal branch stars in the Galactic halo out to large distances. We demonstrate a completeness of 91% and a purity of 93% with respect to available spectroscopic classifications. We subsequently use our new clean sample of these standard candles to investigate the substructure in the Galactic halo over the Pristine footprint. Among other features, this allows for a careful tracing of multiple parts of the Sagittarius stream, providing a measurement independent …
