We investigate how HII region temperature structure assumptions affect "direct-method" spatially-resolved metallicity observations using multispecies auroral lines in a galaxy from the SAMI Galaxy Survey. SAMI609396B, at redshift $z=0.018$, is a low-mass galaxy in a minor merger with intense star formation, analogous to conditions at high redshifts. We use three methods to derive direct metallicities and compare with strong-line diagnostics. The spatial metallicity trends show significant differences among the three direct methods. Our first method is based on the commonly used electron temperature $T_e$([OIII]) from the [OIII]$λ$4363 auroral line and a traditional $T_e$([OII]) -- $T_e$([OIII]) calibration. The second method applies a recent empirical correction to the O$^+$ abundance from the [OIII]/[OII] strong-line ratio. The third method infers the $T_e$([OII]) from the [SII]$λλ$4069,76 auroral lines. The first method favours a positive metallicity gradient along SAMI609396B, whereas the second and third methods yield flattened gradients. Strong-line diagnostics produce mostly flat gradients, albeit with unquantified contamination from shocked regions. We conclude that overlooked assumptions about the internal temperature structure of HII regions in the direct method can lead to large discrepancies in metallicity gradient studies. Our detailed analysis of SAMI609396B underlines that high-accuracy metallicity gradient measurements require a wide array of emission lines and improved spatial resolutions in order to properly constrain excitation sources, physical conditions, and temperature structures of the emitting gas. Integral-field spectroscopic studies with future facilities such as JWST/NIRSpec and ground-based ELTs will be crucial in minimising systematic effects on measured gradients in distant galaxies.
We investigate the mass-metallicity relation and its dependence on galaxy physical properties with a sample of 703 Lyman-break analogues (LBAs) in local Universe, which have similar properties to high redshift star-forming galaxies. The sample is selected according to $\ha$ luminosity, $L(\ha)>10^{41.8}\,{\rm erg\,s^{-1}}$, and surface brightness, $I(\ha)>10^{40.5}\,{\rm erg\,s^{-1}\,kpc^{-2}}$, criteria. The mass-metallicity relation of LBAs harmoniously agrees with that of star-forming galaxies at $z \sim$ 1.4-1.7 in stellar mass range of $10^{8.5}M_{\odot}<M_{*}<10^{11}M_{\odot}$. The relat…
We present an analysis of spatially resolved gas-phase metallicity relations in five dwarf galaxies ($M_{halo} \approx 10^{11} M_\odot$, $M_\star \approx 10^{8.8}-10^{9.6} M_\odot$) from the FIRE-2 (Feedback in Realistic Environments) cosmological zoom-in simulation suite, which include an explicit model for sub-grid turbulent mixing of metals in gas, near $z\approx 0$, over a period of 1.4 Gyrs, and compare our findings with observations. While these dwarf galaxies represent a diverse sample, we find that all simulated galaxies match the observed mass-metallicity (MZR) and mass-metallicity gr…
Aims: There is a spatially resolved star-forming main sequence (rSFMS) and mass-metallicity relation (rMZR) of galaxies in local universe. We know that the global mass-metallicity relation (MZR) results from the integral of rMZR, and it will evolve with the redshift. However, the evolution of rMZR with redshift is still unclear due to the low spatial resolution and signal-to-noise ratio. There are currently too few observations beyond local universe, and only simulations can reproduce the evolution of rMZR with redshift. Methods: In this work, we select ten emission-line galaxies with an avera…
Large galaxy surveys have demonstrated that galaxy-galaxy mergers can dramatically change the morphologies, star formation rates (SFRs) and metallicities of their constituents. However, most statistical studies have been limited to the measurement of global quantities, through large fibres or integrated colours. In this work, we present the first statistically significant study of spatially resolved star formation and metallicity profiles using integral field spectroscopy, using a sample of $\sim$20,000 spaxels in 36 visually selected post-merger galaxies from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies with …
The source of energetic photons that heated and reionized the early Universe remains uncertain. Early galaxies had low metallicity and recent population synthesis calculations suggest that the number and luminosity of high-mass X-ray binaries are enhanced in star-forming galaxies with low metallicity, offering a potentially important and previously overlooked source of heating and reionization. Lyman break analogue (LBA) galaxies are local galaxies that strongly resemble the high-redshift, star-forming Lyman Break Galaxies and have been suggested as local analogues to these metal-deficient gal…
With the goal of a thorough investigation of the ionised gas and its origin in early-type group-dominant galaxies, we present archival MUSE data for 18 galaxies from the Complete Local-Volume Groups Sample (CLoGS). This data allowed us to study the spatially-resolved warm gas properties, including the morphology of the ionised gas, EW(H$α$) and kinematics as well as the gas-phase metallicity (12 + log(O/H)) of these systems. In order to distinguish between different ionisation mechanisms, we used the emission-line ratios [O III]/H$β$ and [N II]/H$α$ in the BPT diagrams and EW(H$α$). We find th…
We present gas-phase metallicity and ionization parameter maps of 25 star-forming face-on spiral galaxies from the SAMI Galaxy Survey Data Release 1. Self-consistent metallicity and ionization parameter maps are calculated simultaneously through an iterative process to account for the interdependence of the strong emission line diagnostics involving ([OII]+[OIII])/H$β$ (R23) and [OIII]/[OII] (O32). The maps are created on a spaxel-by-spaxel basis because HII regions are not resolved at the SAMI spatial resolution. We combine the SAMI data with stellar mass, star formation rate (SFR), effective…

We present near-infrared observations of 42 gravitationally lensed galaxies obtained in the framework of the KMOS Lensed Emission Lines and VElocity Review (KLEVER) Survey, a program aimed at investigating the spatially resolved properties of the ionised gas in 1.2<z<2.5 galaxies by means of a full coverage of the YJ, H and K near-infrared bands. Detailed metallicity maps and gradients are derived for a sub-sample of 28 galaxies from reconstructed source plane emission line maps, exploiting the variety of different emission line diagnostics provided by the broad wavelength coverage of the surv…
We report the first gas-phase metallicity map of a distant galaxy measured with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). We use the NIRISS slitless spectroscopy acquired by the GLASS Early Release Science program to spatially resolve the rest-frame optical nebular emission lines in a gravitationally lensed galaxy at $z=3.06$ behind the Abell 2744 galaxy cluster. This galaxy (dubbed GLASS-Zgrad1) has stellar mass $\sim10^{8.6} M_\odot$, instantaneous star formation rate $\sim8.6$ $M_\odot$/yr (both corrected for lensing magnification), and global metallicity one-fourth solar. From its emission li…
The abundance of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in low- and high-metallicity galaxies has been widely discussed since the time when detailed infrared data for extragalactic objects were first obtained. On the scales of entire galaxies, a smaller PAH abundance in lower-metallicity galaxies is often observed. We study this relationship for star-forming regions in nearby galaxies, for a sample containing more than 200 HII complexes, using spatially-resolved observations from the Herschel Space Observatory and Spitzer Space Telescope. We use a model for the dust emission to estimate the p…
We perform spatially resolved stellar population analysis for a sample of 69 early-type galaxies (ETGs) from the CALIFA integral field spectroscopic survey, including 48 ellipticals and 21 S0's. We generate and quantitatively characterize profiles of light-weighted mean stellar age and metallicity within $\lesssim 2R_e$, as a function of radius and stellar-mass surface density $μ_*$. We study in detail the dependence of profiles on galaxies' global properties, including velocity dispersion $σ_e$, stellar mass, morphology. ETGs are universally characterized by strong, negative metallicity gradi…
We analyze the spatially resolved star formation history of 300 nearby galaxies from the CALIFA integral field spectroscopic survey to investigate the radial structure and gradients of the present day stellar populations properties as a function of Hubble type and galaxy stellar mass. A fossil record method based on spectral synthesis techniques is used to recover spatially and temporally resolved maps of stellar population properties of spheroidal and spiral galaxies with masses $10^9$ to $7 \times 10^{11}$ M$_\odot$. The results show that galaxy-wide spatially averaged stellar population pro…
EMPRESS. X. Spatially resolved mass-metallicity relation in extremely metal-poor galaxies: evidence of episodic star-formation fueled by a metal-poor gas infall
Deep images and near-IR spectra of galaxies in the field of the lensing cluster SMACS J0723.3-7327 were recently taken in the Early Release Observations program of JWST. Among these, two NIRSpec spectra of galaxies at $z=7.7$ and one at $z=8.5$ were obtained, revealing for the first time rest-frame optical emission line spectra of galaxies in the epoch of reionization, including the detection of the important[OIII]4363 auroral line (see JWST PR 2022-035). We present an analysis of the emission line properties of these galaxies, finding that these galaxies have a high excitation (as indicated b…
We present a series of chemodynamical simulations of Magellanic-like systems consisting of two interacting, equal-mass dwarf galaxies orbiting a massive host galaxy, including feedback and star formation, tides, and ram pressure. We study the star formation and chemical enrichment history of the dwarfs, and the production of a Magellanic Stream analogue. The dwarfs interact with each other through tidal forces, distorting their morphologies and triggering star formation. A stream is naturally produced as outflows, induced by feedback and interactions, are stretched by tidal forces. Counter to …
We examine the role of energy feedback in shaping the distribution of metals within cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of L* disc galaxies. While negative abundance gradients today provide a boundary condition for galaxy evolution models, in support of inside-out disc growth, empirical evidence as to whether abundance gradients steepen or flatten with time remains highly contradictory. We made use of a suite of L* discs, realised with and without `enhanced' feedback. All the simulations were produced using the smoothed particle hydrodynamics code Gasoline, and their in situ gas-phase meta…
Aims: Interacting galaxies show a metallicity dilution compared to isolated galaxies of similar masses in the mass-metallicity space at the global scale. We investigate the spatially resolved mass-metallicity relation (MZR) of galaxy pairs in the SDSS-MaNGA survey to confirm that the local relation between the stellar mass surface density and the metallicity is consistent with the MZR at the global scale. Methods: We investigate the relationship between the stellar mass surface density and the metallicity abundance, 12+log (O/H), for star-forming spaxels belonging to 298 galaxy pairs identifie…
We explore scaling relations between the physical properties of spatially resolved regions within the galaxies that emerge in the Evolution and Assembly of GaLaxies and their Environments (EAGLE) hydrodynamical, cosmological simulations. Using 1 kpc-scale spaxels, we compute the relationships between the star formation rate and stellar mass surface densities, i.e. the spatially resolved star-forming main sequence (rSFMS), and between the gas metallicity and the stellar mass surface density, i.e. the spatially resolved mass-metallicity relation (rMZR). We compare to observed relations derived f…
The existence of a spatially resolved Star-Forming Main Sequence (rSFMS) and a spatially resolved Mass-Metallicity Relation (rMZR) is now well established for local galaxies. Moreover, gradients with metallicity decreasing with radius seem to be common in local disc galaxies. These observations suggest that galaxy formation is a self-regulating process, and provide constraints for galaxy evolution models. Studying the evolution of these relations at higher redshifts is still however very challenging. In this paper, we analyse three gravitationally lensed galaxies at z = 0.6, 0.7 and 1, observe…
We present a study of the excitation conditions and metallicity of ionized gas (Z_gas) in eight nearby barred and unbarred spiral galaxies from the VIRUS-P Exploration of Nearby Galaxies (VENGA) survey, which provides high spatial sampling and resolution (median ~ 387 pc), large coverage from the bulge to outer disc, broad wavelength range (3600-6800 Ang.), and medium spectral resolution (~ 120 km s^-1 at 5000 Ang.). Our results are: (1) We present high resolution gas excitation maps to differentiate between regions with excitation typical of Seyfert, LINER, or recent star formation. We find L…
Recent analysis of the SDSS-III/APOGEE Data Release 12 stellar catalogue has revealed that the Milky Way's metallicity distribution function (MDF) changes shape as a function of radius, transitioning from being negatively skewed at small Galactocentric radii to positively skewed at large Galactocentric radii. Using a high resolution, N-body+SPH simulation, we show that the changing skewness arises from radial migration - metal-rich stars form in the inner disk and subsequently migrate to the metal-poorer outer disk. These migrated stars represent a large fraction (> 50%) of the stars in the ou…
We use integral field spectroscopic (IFS) observations from the Gemini North Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS-N) to study the central H II region in a nearby blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxy NGC 4449. The IFS data enable us to explore the variation of physical and chemical conditions of the star-forming region and the surrounding gas on spatial scales as small as 5.5 pc. Our kinematical analysis shows possible signatures of shock ionisation and shell structures in the surroundings of the star-forming region. The metallicity maps of the region, created using direct T$_e$ and indirect strong line …
To investigate star formation and assembly processes of massive galaxies, we present here a spatially-resolved stellar populations analysis of a sample of 45 elliptical galaxies (Es) selected from the CALIFA survey. We find rather flat age and [Mg/Fe] radial gradients, weakly dependent on the effective velocity dispersion of the galaxy within half-light radius. However, our analysis shows that metallicity gradients become steeper with increasing galaxy velocity dispersion. In addition, we have homogeneously compared the stellar populations gradients of our sample of Es to a sample of nearby re…
Superluminous supernovae (SLSNe) are found predominantly in dwarf galaxies, indicating that their progenitors have a low metallicity. However, the most nearby SLSN to date, SN 2017egm, occurred in the spiral galaxy NGC 3191, which has a relatively high stellar mass and correspondingly high metallicity. In this paper, we present detailed analysis of the nearby environment of SN 2017egm using MaNGA IFU data, which provides spectral data on kiloparsec scales. From the velocity map we find no evidence that SN 2017egm occurred within some intervening satellite galaxy, and at the SN position most me…
NebulaBayes is a new Bayesian code that implements a general method of comparing observed emission-line fluxes to photoionization model grids. The code enables us to extract robust, spatially resolved measurements of abundances in the extended narrow line regions (ENLRs) produced by Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). We observe near-constant ionization parameters but steeply radially-declining pressures, which together imply that radiation pressure regulates the ENLR density structure on large scales. Our sample includes four `pure Seyfert' galaxies from the S7 survey that have extensive ENLRs. NGC…
Why the Northern Hemisphere Needs a 30-40 m Telescope and the Science at Stake: Northern Local Star-forming Dwarf Galaxies. Analogues of the First Galaxies and Probes of the Cosmic Metallicity Scale
A number of Local Group dwarf galaxies are known to have two spatially segregated stellar metallicity populations, a centrally concentrated metal-rich population and a more extended metal-poor population. In this work we discuss mechanisms that lead to the formation of two spatially segregated metallicity populations. Using a set of high-resolution hydrodynamical simulations of Local Group-like environments, we select a sample of satellite and field galaxies, spanning the stellar mass range $10^6-10^9$M$_{\odot}$, that exhibit bimodality in their metallicity distributions. Among those, we iden…
Using multi-band photometric images of M 51 and its companion NGC 5195 from ultraviolet to optical and infrared, we investigate spatially resolved stellar population properties of this interacting system with stellar population synthesis models. The observed IRX is used to constrain dust extinction. Stellar mass is also inferred from the model fitting. By fitting observed spectral energy distributions (SEDs) with synthetical ones, we derive two-dimensional distributions of stellar age, metallicity, dust extinction, and stellar mass. In M 51, two grand-designed spiral arms extending from the bu…
We present spatially resolved gas-phase metallicity for a system of three galaxies at z=1.85 detected in the Grism Lens-Amplified Survey from Space (GLASS). The combination of HST's diffraction limit and strong gravitational lensing by the cluster MACS J0717+3745 results in a spatial resolution of ~200-300 pc, enabling good spatial sampling despite the intrinsically small galaxy sizes. The galaxies in this system are separated by 50-200 kpc in projection and are likely in an early stage of interaction, evidenced by relatively high specific star formation rates. Their gas-phase metallicities ar…
The Milky Way provides an ideal laboratory to test our understanding of galaxy evolution, owing to our ability to observe our Galaxy over fine scales. However, connecting the Galaxy to the wider galaxy population remains difficult, due to the challenges posed by our internal perspective and to the different observational techniques employed. Here, we present a sample of galaxies identified as Milky Way Analogs (MWAs) on the basis of their stellar masses and bulge-to-total ratios, observed as part of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey. We analyse the galaxies…

Using VLT/FLAMES optical integral field unit observations, we present the first spatially resolved spectroscopic study of the well known blue compact galaxy Haro11, thought to be a local analogue to high redshift Lyman Break Galaxies. Haro11 displays complex emission line profiles, consisting of narrow (FWHM<200 km/s) and broad (FWHM 200-300 km/s) components. We identify three distinct emission knots kinematically connected to one another. A chemodynamical analysis is presented, revealing that spatially resolved ionic and elemental abundances do not agree with those derived from integrated spe…
The dust-to-metals ratio describes the fraction of the heavy elements contained in dust grains, and its variation provides key insights into the life cycle of dust. We measure the dust-to-metals ratio in M101, a nearby galaxy with a radial metallicity (Z) gradient spanning $\sim$1 dex. We fit the dust spectral energy distribution from 100 to 500 $μm$ with five variants of the modified blackbody dust emission model in which we vary the temperature distribution and how emissivity depends on wavelength. Among them, the model with a single temperature blackbody modified by a broken power-law emiss…

We present results from the largest CaII triplet line metallicity study of Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) field red giant stars to date, involving 3037 objects spread across approximately 37.5 sq. deg., centred on this galaxy. We find a median metallicity of [Fe/H]=-0.99+/-0.01, with clear evidence for an abundance gradient of -0.075+/-0.011 dex / deg. over the inner 5 deg. We interpret the abundance gradient to be the result of an increasing fraction of young stars with decreasing galacto-centric radius, coupled with a uniform global age-metallicity relation. We also demonstrate that the age-me…
We present infrared (IR) spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of individual star-forming regions in four extremely metal poor (EMP) galaxies with metallicity Z around Zsun/10 as observed by the Herschel Space Observatory. With the good wavelength coverage of the SED, it is found that these EMP star-forming regions show distinct SED shapes as compared to those of grand design Spirals and higher metallicity dwarfs: they have on average much higher f70um/f160um ratios at a given f160um/f250um ratio; single modified black-body (MBB) fittings to the SED at λ>= 100 um still reveal higher dust temper…
Extremely metal-poor, high-ionizing starbursts in the local Universe provide unique laboratories for exploring in detail the physics of high-redshift systems. Also, their ongoing star-formation and haphazard morphology make them outstanding proxies for primordial galaxies. Using integral field spectroscopy, we spatially resolved the ISM properties and massive stars of two first-class low metallicity galaxies with Wolf-Rayet features and nebular HeII emission: Mrk178 and IZw18. In this review, we summarize our main results for these two objects.

We present a spatially resolved spectroscopic study for the metal poor HII galaxy J084220+115000 using MEGARA Integral Field Unit observations at the Gran Telescopio Canarias. We estimated the gas metallicity using the direct method for oxygen, nitrogen and helium and found a mean value of 12+$\log$(O/H)=$8.03\pm$0.06, and integrated electron density and temperature of $\sim161$ cm$^{-3}$ and $\sim15400$ K, respectively. The metallicity distribution shows a large range of $Δ$(O/H) = 0.72 dex between the minimum and maximum (7.69$\pm$0.06 and 8.42$\pm$0.05) values, unusual in a dwarf star-formi…
We present an analysis of the formation and chemical evolution of stellar haloes around (a) Milky Way Analogue (MWA) galaxies and (b) galaxy clusters in the L-Galaxies 2020 semi-analytic model of galaxy evolution. Observed stellar halo properties are better reproduced when assuming a gradual stripping model for the removal of cold gas and stars from satellites, compared to an instantaneous stripping model. The slope of the stellar mass -- metallicity relation for MWA stellar haloes is in good agreement with that observed in the local Universe. This extends the good agreement between L-Galaxies…
We present deep ACS images of 3 fields in the edge-on disk galaxy NGC 891, which extend from the plane of the disk to 12 kpc, and out to 25 kpc along the major axis. The photometry of individual stars reaches 2.5 magnitudes below the tip of the RGB. We use the astrophotometric catalogue to probe the stellar content and metallicity distribution across the thick disk and spheroid of NGC 891. The CMDs of thick disk and spheroid population are dominated by old RGB stars with a wide range of metallicities, from a metal-poor tail at [Fe/H] ~ -2.4 dex, up to about half-solar metallicity. The peak of …
We report the first sub-kiloparsec spatial resolution measurements of strongly inverted gas-phase metallicity gradients in two dwarf galaxies at $z$$\sim$2. The galaxies have stellar masses $\sim$$10^9M_\odot$, specific star-formation rate $\sim$20 Gyr$^{-1}$, and global metallicity $12+\log({\rm O/H})\sim8.1$ (1/4 solar), assuming the Maiolino et al. (2008) strong line calibrations of OIII/Hb and OII/Hb. Their metallicity radial gradients are measured to be highly inverted, i.e., 0.122$\pm$0.008 and 0.111$\pm$0.017 dex/kpc, which is hitherto unseen at such small masses in similar redshift ran…
We present a detailed exploration of the stellar mass vs. gas-phase metallicity relation (MZR) using integral field spectroscopy data obtained from ~1000 galaxies observed by the SAMI Galaxy survey. These spatially resolved spectroscopic data allow us to determine the metallicity within the same physical scale (Reff) for different calibrators. The shape of the MZ relations is very similar between the different calibrators, while there are large offsets in the absolute values of the abundances. We confirm our previous results derived using the spatially resolved data provided by the CALIFA and …
We present deep Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys observations of the stellar populations in two fields lying at 20 and 23 kpc from the centre of M31 along the south-west semi-major axis. These data enable the construction of colour-magnitude diagrams reaching the oldest main-sequence turn-offs (~13 Gyr) which, when combined with another field at 25 kpc from our previous work, we use to derive the first precision constraints on the spatially-resolved star formation history of the M31 disc. The star formation rates exhibit temporal as well as field-to-field variations, but are …

We study the effect of surface brightness on the mass-metallicity relation using nearby galaxies whose gas content and metallicity profiles are available. Previous studies using fiber spectra indicated that lower surface brightness galaxies have systematically lower metallicity for their stellar mass, but the results were uncertain because of aperture effect. With stellar masses and surface brightnesses measured at WISE W1 and W2 bands, we re-investigate the surface brightness dependence with spatially-resolved metallicity profiles and find the similar result. We further demonstrate that the s…
We present the stellar surface mass density {\it vs.} gas metallicity ($Σ_*-Z$) relation for more than 500,000 spatially-resolved star-forming resolution elements (spaxels) from a sample of 653 disk galaxies included in the SDSS IV MaNGA survey. We find a tight relation between these local properties, with higher metallicities as the surface density increases. This relation extends over three orders of magnitude in the surface mass density and a factor of four in metallicity. We show that this local relationship can simultaneously reproduce two well-known properties of disk galaxies: their glo…
I review here the spatially-resolved spectroscopic properties of low-redshift star-forming galaxies (and their retired counter-parts), using results from the most recent Integral Field Spectroscopy galaxy surveys. First, I briefly summarise the global spectroscopic properties of these galaxies, discussing the main ionization processes, and the global relations described between the star-formation rates, oxygen abundances, and average properties of their stellar populations (age and metallicity) with the stellar mass. Second, I present the local distribution of the ionizing processes, down to k…
