We show that the topological rank of an orbit full group generated by an ergodic, probability measure-preserving free action of a non-discrete unimodular locally compact Polish group is two. For this, we use the existence of a cross section and show that for a locally compact Polish group, the full group generated by any dense subgroup is dense in the orbit full group of the action of the group.
We prove that the orbit full group of a free action of a locally compact Polish group is extremely amenable if and only if the acting group is amenable, using the fact that the full group generates the von Neumann algebra of the action.
We study class $\mathcal S$ for locally compact groups. We characterize locally compact groups in this class as groups having an amenable action on a boundary that is small at infinity, generalizing a theorem of Ozawa. Using this characterization, we provide new examples of groups in class $\mathcal S$ and prove unique prime factorization results for group von Neumann algebras of products of locally compact groups in this class. We also prove that class $\mathcal S$ is a measure equivalence invariant.
We give some new characterizations of exactness for locally compact second countable groups. In particular, we prove that a locally compact second countable group is exact if and only if it admits a topologically amenable action on a compact Hausdorff space. This answers an open question by Anantharaman-Delaroche.
A locally compact contraction group is a pair (G,f) where G is a locally compact group and f an automorphism of G which is contractive in the sense that the forward orbit under f of each g in G converges to the neutral element e, as n tends to infinity. We show that every surjective, continuous, equivariant homomorphism between locally compact contraction groups admits an equivariant continuous global section. As a consequence, extensions of locally compact contraction groups with abelian kernel can be described by continuous equivariant cohomology. For each prime number p, we use 2-cocycles t…
We study universal properties of locally compact G-spaces for countable infinite groups G. In particular we consider open invariant subsets of the β-compactification of G (which is a G-space in a natural way), and their minimal closed invariant subspaces. These are locally compact free G-spaces, and the latter are also minimal. We examine the properies of these G-spaces with emphasis on their universal properties. As an example of our resuts, we use combinatorial methods to show that each countable infinite group admits a free minimal action on the locally compact non-compact Cantor set.
We show that any connected locally compact group which admits an expansive automorphism is nilpotent. We also show that for any locally compact group $G$, $α\in {\rm Aut}(G)$ is expansive if and only if for any $α$-invariant closed subgroup $H$ which is either compact or normal, the restriction of $α$ to $H$ is expansive and the quotient map on $G/H$ corresponding to $α$ is expansive. We get a structure theorem for locally compact groups admitting expansive automorphisms. We prove that an automorphism on a non-discrete locally compact group can not be both distal and expansive.
The purpose of this paper is to study property (RD) for locally compact Hecke pairs. We discuss length functions on Hecke pairs and the growth of Hecke pairs. We establish an equivalence between property (RD) of locally compact groups and property (RD) of certain locally compact Hecke pairs. This allows us to transfer several important results concerning property (RD) of locally compact groups into our setting, and consequently to identify many classes of examples of locally compact Hecke pairs with property (RD). We also show that a reduced discrete Hecke pair $(G,H)$ has (RD) if and only if …
We extend a theorem of Haagerup and Kraus in the C*-algebra context: for a locally compact group with the approximation property (AP), the reduced C*-crossed product construction preserves the strong operator approximation property (SOAP). In particular their reduced group C*-algebras have the SOAP. Our method also solves another open problem: the AP implies exactness for general locally compact groups.
Wreath products of non-discrete locally compact groups are usually not locally compact groups, nor even topological groups. We introduce a natural extension of the wreath product construction to the setting of locally compact groups. As an application, we disprove a conjecture of Trofimov, constructing compactly generated locally compact groups of intermediate growth without nontrivial compact normal subgroups.
We describe the global structure of totally disconnected locally compact groups having a linear open compact subgroup. Among the applications, we show that if a non-discrete, compactly generated, topologically simple, totally disconnected locally compact group is locally linear, then it is a simple algebraic group over a local field.
We define a class of spaces on which one may generalise the notion of compactness following motivating examples from higher-dimensional number theory. We establish analogues of several well-known topological results (such as Tychonoff's Theorem) for such spaces. We also discuss several possible applications of this framework, including the theory of harmonic analysis on non-locally compact groups.
We introduce the algebraic entropy for continuous endomorphisms of locally linearly compact vector spaces over a discrete field, as the natural extension of the algebraic entropy for endomorphisms of discrete vector spaces. We show that the main properties of entropy continue to hold in the general context of locally linearly compact vector spaces, in particular we extend the Addition Theorem.
Let $G$ be a locally compact Polish group. A metrizable $G$-flow $Y$ is called model-universal if by considering the various invariant probability measures on $Y$, we can recover every free action of $G$ on a standard Lebesgue space up to isomorphism. Weiss has shown that for countable $G$, there exists a minimal, model-universal flow. In this paper, we extend this result to all locally compact Polish groups.
We first obtain finiteness properties for the collection of closed normal subgroups of a compactly generated locally compact group. Via these properties, every compactly generated locally compact group admits an essentially chief series - i.e. a finite normal series in which each factor is compact, discrete, or a topological chief factor. Additionally, a Jordan-Hölder theorem holds for the `large' factors in an essentially chief series.
We study the locally compact abelian groups in the class $\mathfrak E_{<\infty}$, that is, having only continuous endomorphisms of finite topological entropy, and in its subclass $\mathfrak E_0$, that is, having all continuous endomorphisms with vanishing topological entropy. We discuss the reduction of the problem to the case of periodic locally compact abelian groups, and then to locally compact abelian $p$-groups. We show that locally compact abelian $p$-groups of finite rank belong to $\mathfrak E_{<\infty}$, and that those of them that belong to $\mathfrak E_0$ are precisely the ones with…
The class, denoted by $\mathscr{S}$, of totally disconnected locally compact groups which are non-discrete, compactly generated, and topologically simple contains many compelling examples. In recent years, a general theory for these groups, which studies the interaction between the compact open subgroups and the global structure, has emerged. In this article, we study the non-discrete totally disconnected locally compact groups $H$ that admit a continuous embedding with dense image into some $G\in \mathscr{S}$; that is, we consider the dense locally compact subgroups of groups $G\in \mathscr{S…
In analogy to the topological entropy for continuous endomorphisms of totally disconnected locally compact groups, we introduce a notion of topological entropy for continuous endomorphisms of locally linearly compact vector spaces. We study the fundamental properties of this entropy and we prove the Addition Theorem, showing that the topological entropy is additive with respect to short exact sequences. By means of Lefschetz Duality, we connect the topological entropy to the algebraic entropy in a Bridge Theorem.
We introduce and explore a natural rank for totally disconnected locally compact groups called the bounded conjugacy rank. This rank is shown to be a lattice invariant for lattices in sigma compact totally disconnected locally compact groups; that is to say, for a given sigma compact totally disconnected locally compact group, some lattice has bounded conjugacy rank n if and only if every lattice has bounded conjugacy rank n. Several examples are then presented.
A result due to M. Gromov states that any two finitely generated groups Γ and Λ are quasi-isometric if and only if they admit a topological coupling, i.e., a commuting pair of proper continuous cocompact actions $Γ\curvearrowright X\curvearrowleft Λ$ on a locally compact Hausdorff space. This result is extended here to all (compactly generated) locally compact second countable groups.
We obtain a sufficient condition, given a totally disconnected, locally compact group $G$ with a topologically simple monolith $S$, to ensure that $S$ is open in $G$ and abstractly simple.
We investigate the class of locally compact lacunary hyperbolic groups. We prove that if a locally compact compactly generated group G admits one asymptotic cone that is a real tree and whose natural transitive isometric action is focal, then G must be a focal hyperbolic group. As an application, we characterize connected Lie groups and linear algebraic groups over an ultrametric local field of characteristic zero having cut-points in one asymptotic cone. We prove several results for locally compact lacunary hyperbolic groups, and extend the characterization of finitely generated lacunary hype…
The class of locally compact near abelian groups is introduced and investigated as a class of metabelian groups formalizing and applying the concept of scalar multiplication. The structure of locally compact near abelian groups and its close connections to prime number theory are discussed and elucidated by graph theoretical tools. These investigations require a thorough reviewing and extension to present circumstances of various aspects of the general theory of locally compact groups such as -the Chabauty space of closed subgroups with its natural compact Hausdorff topology, -a very general S…
In 'The essentially chief series of a compactly generated locally compact group', an analogue of chief series for finite groups is discovered for compactly generated locally compact groups. In the present article, we show that chief factors necessarily exist in all locally compact groups with sufficiently rich topological structure. We also show that chief factors have one of seven types, and for all but one of these types, there is a decomposition into discrete groups, compact groups, and topologically simple groups. Our results for chief factors require exploring the theory developed in 'Chi…
We describe locally compact groups which are separably categorical metric structures. The paper extends (and corrects) Section 3 of the paper A.Ivanov, "Locally compact groups and continuous logic", arXiv: 1206.5473
We consider random walks on locally compact groups, extending the geometric criteria for the identification of their Poisson boundary previously known for discrete groups. First, we prove a version of the Shannon-McMillan-Breiman theorem, which we then use to generalize Kaimanovich's ray approximation and strip approximation criteria. We give several applications to identify the Poisson boundary of locally compact groups which act by isometries on nonpositively curved spaces, as well as on Diestel-Leader graphs and horocylic products.
In this paper we investigate locally compact semitopological graph inverse semigroups. Our main result is the following: if a directed graph $E$ is strongly connected and contains a finite amount of vertices then a locally compact semitopological graph inverse semigroup $G(E)$ is either compact or discrete. This result generalizes results of Gutik and Bardyla who proved the above dichotomy for locally compact semitopological polycyclic monoids $\mathcal{P}_1$ and $\mathcal{P}_λ$, respectively.
Groups of almost upper triangular infinite matrices with entries indexed by integers are studied. It is shown that, when the matrices are over a finite field, these groups admit a nondiscrete totally disconnected, locally compact group topology and are topologically simple.
We introduce the notion of commability between locally compact groups, namely the equivalence relation generated by cocompact inclusions and quotients by compact normal subgroups. We give a classification of focal hyperbolic locally compact groups up to commability. In the mixed case, it involves a real parameter, which is shown to be a quasi-isometry invariant.
We obtain a characterization of totally disconnected, locally compact groups $G$ with the following property: given a locally normal subgroup $K$ of $G$, then there is an open subgroup of $K$ that is a direct factor of an open subgroup of $G$. This property is motivated by J. Wilson's structure theory of just infinite groups, and indeed, when $G$ has trivial quasi-centre, the condition turns out to be equivalent to the condition that $G$ is locally isomorphic to a finite direct product of just infinite profinite groups. In the latter situation we obtain some global structural features of $G$, …
We prove that each closed locally continuum- connected subspace of a finite dimensional topological group is locally compact. This allows us to construct many 1-dimensional metrizable separable spaces that are not homeomorphic to closed subsets of finite-dimensional topological groups, which answers in negative a question of D.Shakhmatov. Another corollary is a characterization of Lie groups as finite-dimensional locally continuum-connected topological groups. For locally path connected topological groups this characterization was proved by Gleason and Palais in 1957.
Using topological notions of translation-like actions introduced by Schneider, we give a positive answer to a geometric version of Burnside problem for locally compact group. The main theorem states that a locally compact group is non-compact if and only if it admits a translation-like action by the group of integers $\mathbf Z$. We then characterize the existence of cocompact translation-like actions of $\mathbf Z$ or non-abelian free groups on a large class of locally compact groups, improving on Schneider's results and generalising Seward's.
Many non-locally compact second countable groups admit a comeagre conjugacy class. For example, this is the case for the automorphism group of the rational order and the automorphism group of the random graph [Truss]. A. Kechris and C. Rosendal ask if a non-trivial locally compact second countable group can admit a comeagre conjugacy class. We answer the question in the negative via an analysis of locally compact second countable groups with topological conditions on a conjugacy class.
We introduce moment maps for continuous unitary representations of general topological groups. For solvable separable locally compact groups, we prove that the closure of the image of the moment map of any representation is convex.
Let $X$ be a compact torsion abelian group. In this paper, we show that an extension of $F_{p}$ by $X$ splits where $F_{p}$ is the p-adic number group and $p$ a prime number. Also, we show that an extension of a torsion-free, non-divisible LCA group by $X$ is not split.
Let $ϕ: G \rightarrow H$ be a group homomorphism such that $H$ is a totally disconnected locally compact (t.d.l.c.) group and the image of $ϕ$ is dense. We show that all such homomorphisms arise as completions of $G$ with respect to uniformities of a particular kind. Moreover, $H$ is determined up to a compact normal subgroup by the pair $(G,ϕ^{-1}(L))$, where $L$ is a compact open subgroup of $H$. These results generalize the well-known properties of profinite completions to the locally compact setting.
Let $\mathbb{K}$ be a discrete field and $(V, ϕ)$ a flow over the category of locally linearly compact $\mathbb{K}$-spaces. Here we give the formulas to compute the topological entropy of $(V,ϕ)$ subject to the extension or the restriction of scalars.
