In this paper we discuss the question how to bound supremum of a stochastic process with the index set of a product type. There is a tempting idea to approach the question by the analysis of the process on each of the marginal index spaces separately. However it turns out that we also need to study suitable partitions of the whole index space. We show what can be done in this direction and how to use the method to reprove some known results. In particular we observe that all known applications of the Bernoulli Theorem can be obtained in this way, moreover we use the shattering dimension to slightly extend the application to VC classes. We also show some application to the regularity of paths for processes which take values in vector spaces. Finally we give a short proof of the Mendelson-Paouris result on sums of squares for empirical processes.
We consider a mixed stochastic differential equation driven by possibly dependent fractional Brownian motion and Brownian motion. Under mild regularity assumptions on the coefficients, it is proved that the equation has a unique solution.
We are interested in the increment stationarity property for $L^2$-indexed stochastic processes, which is a fairly general concern since many random fields can be interpreted as the restriction of a more generally defined $L^2$-indexed process. We first give a spectral representation theorem in the sense of \citet{Ito54}, and see potential applications on random fields, in particular on the $L^2$-indexed extension of the fractional Brownian motion. Then we prove that this latter process is characterized by its increment stationarity and self-similarity properties, as in the one-dimensional cas…
We consider stochastic differential equation involving pathwise integral with respect to fractional Brownian motion. The estimates for the Hurst parameter are constructed according to first- and second-order quadratic variations of observed values of the solution. The rate of convergence of these estimates to the true value of a parameter is established.
In this paper, we obtain the existence of random attractors for a class of evolution equations driven by a geometric fractional Brownian rough path with Hurst index $H\in(\frac{1}{3},\frac{1}{2}]$ and establish the upper semi-continuity of random attractors $\mathcal{A}_η$ for the approximated systems of the evolution equations.
We establish limit theorems for U-statistics indexed by a random walk on Z^d and we express the limit in terms of some Levy sheet Z(s,t). Under some hypotheses, we prove that the limit process is Z(t,t) if the random walk is transient or null-recurrent ant that it is some stochastic integral with respect to Z when the walk is positive recurrent. We compare our results with results for random walks in random scenery.
Let $B=(B_1(t),\ldots,B_d(t))$ be a $d$-dimensional fractional Brownian motion with Hurst index $α<1/4$. Defining properly iterated integrals of $B$ is a difficult task because of the low Hölder regularity index of its paths. Yet rough path theory shows it is the key to the construction of a stochastic calculus with respect to $B$, or to solving differential equations driven by $B$. We show in this paper how to obtain second-order iterated integrals as the limit when the ultra-violet cut-off goes to infinity of iterated integrals of weakly interacting fields defined using the tools of construc…
The main tool for stochastic calculus with respect to a multidimensional process $B$ with small Hölder regularity index is rough path theory. Once $B$ has been lifted to a rough path, a stochastic calculus -- as well as solutions to stochastic differential equations driven by $B$ -- follow by standard arguments. Although such a lift has been proved to exist by abstract arguments \cite{LyoVic07}, a first general, explicit construction has been proposed in \cite{Unt09,Unt09bis} under the name of Fourier normal ordering. The purpose of this short note is to convey the main ideas of the Fourier no…
We consider the problem of Hurst index estimation for solutions of stochastic differential equations driven by an additive fractional Brownian motion. Using techniques of the Malliavin calculus, we analyze the asymptotic behavior of the quadratic variations of the solution, defined via higher order increments. Then we apply our results to construct and study estimators for the Hurst index.
This article examines a recent body of work on stochastic processes indexed by a tree. Emphasis is on the application of this new framework to existing probability models. Proofs are largely omitted, with references provided.
Let G be a topological compact group acting on some space Y. We study a decomposition of Y-indexed stochastic processes, based on the orthogonality relations between the characters of the irreducible representations of G. In the particular case of a Gaussian process with a G-invariant law, such a decomposition gives a very general explanation of a classic identity in law - between quadratic functionals of a Brownian bridge - due to Watson (1961). Several relations with Karhunen-Loève expansions are discussed, and some applications and extensions are given - in particular related to Gaussian pr…
Strongly consistent and asymptotically normal estimators of the Hurst parameter of solutions of stochastic differential equations are proposed. The estimators are based on discrete observations of the underlying processes.
Orey suggested the definition of some index for Gaussian processes with stationary increments which determines various properties of the sample paths of this process. We give an extension of the definition of the Orey index for a second order stochastic processes which may not have stationary increments and estimate the Orey index for Gaussian process from discrete observations of its sample paths.
We construct measures invariant with respect to equivalence relations which are graphed by horospheric products of trees. The construction is based on using conformal systems of boundary measures on treed equivalence relations. The existence of such an invariant measure allows us to establish amenability of horospheric products of random trees.
This paper deals with the problem of measurable lifting modification for stochastic processes in its most general form and with the 'product lifting problem'. Solutions to the positive are reduced to the existence of marginals with respect to product probability spaces between the ordinary product and the product whose probability measure is the restriction of the skew product of the factor probabilities to the $σ$-algebra obtained by adjoing either the right or left nil-null sets to the ordinary product algebra. We discuss the problem of the existence of (strong) marginals.
Let $A$ be a finite set with $|A|\geqslant 2$, let $n$ be a positive integer, and let $A^n$ denote the discrete $n$-dimensional hypercube (that is, $A^n$ is the Cartesian product of $n$ many copies of $A$). Given a family $\langle D_t:t\in A^n\rangle$ of measurable events in a probability space (a stochastic process), what structural information can be obtained assuming that the events $\langle D_t:t\in A^n\rangle$ are not behaving as if they were independent? We obtain an answer to this problem (in a strong quantitative sense) subject to a mild "stationarity" condition. Our result has a numbe…
We consider sample path properties of the solution to the stochastic heat equation, in $\mathbb{R}^d$ or bounded domains of $\mathbb{R}^d$, driven by a Lévy space-time white noise. When viewed as a stochastic process in time with values in an infinite-dimensional space, the solution is shown to have a càdlàg modification in fractional Sobolev spaces of index less than $-\frac d 2$. Concerning the partial regularity of the solution in time or space when the other variable is fixed, we determine critical values for the Blumenthal-Getoor index of the Lévy noise such that noises with a smaller ind…
A model of scientific citation distribution is given. We apply it to understand the role of the Hirsch index as an indicator of scientific publication importance in Mathematics and some related fields. The proposed model is based on a generalization of such well-known distributions as geometric and Sibuja laws included now in a family of distributions. Real data analysis of the Hirsch index and corresponding citation numbers is given.
We give conditions to prove the existence of an Extremal Index for general stationary stochastic processes by detecting the presence of one or more underlying periodic phenomena. This theory, besides giving general useful tools to identify the extremal index, is also tailored to dynamical systems. In fact, we apply this idea to analyse the possible Extreme Value Laws for the stochastic process generated by observations taken along dynamical orbits with respect to various measures. As in the authors' previous works on this topic, the analogy of these laws in the context of hitting time statisti…
{Let $B=(B_1(t),...,B_d(t))$ be a $d$-dimensional fractional Brownian motion with Hurst index $α<1/4$, or more generally a Gaussian process whose paths have the same local regularity. Defining properly iterated integrals of $B$ is a difficult task because of the low Hölder regularity index of its paths. Yet rough path theory shows it is the key to the construction of a stochastic calculus with respect to $B$, or to solving differential equations driven by $B$. We intend to show in a series of papers how to desingularize iterated integrals by a weak, singular non-Gaussian perturbation of the Ga…
We derive conditions on the products of stochastic matrices guaranteeing the existence of a unique limit invariant distribution. Belying our approach is the hereby defined notion of restricted triangulated Laman graphs. The main idea is the following: to each triangle in the graph, we assign a stochastic matrix. Two matrices can be adjacent in a product only if their corresponding triangles share an edge in the graph. We provide an explicit formula for the limit invariant distribution of the product in terms of the individual stochastic matrices.
We give a new method for proving the homomorphic property of a quantum stochastic ow satisfying a quantum stochastic differential equation with unbounded coefficients, under some further hypotheses. As an application, we prove a Trotter product formula for quantum stochastic ows and obtain quantum stochastic dilations of a class of quantum dynamical semigroups generalizing results of [5]
Using a multiplicative structure (for example that of a Banach algebra) and a partial order we construct a weak version of a Banach space valued stochastic integral with respect to square integrable martingales.
It is possible to construct a double indexed process with sample paths a surface of a family of subordinators obtained by subordination. We study here a branch of this subordination process. This opens martingale methods on symbolic calculus questions.
A Trotter product formula is established for unitary quantum stochastic processes governed by quantum stochastic differential equations with constant bounded coefficients.
Given two random variables $X$ and $Y$, stochastic monotonicity describes a monotone influence of $X$ on $Y$. We prove two different characterizations of stochastically monotone $2$-copulas using the isomorphism between $2$-copulas and Markov operators. The first approach establishes a one-to-one correspondence between stochastically monotone copulas and monotonicity-preserving Markov operators. The second approach characterizes stochastically monotone copulas by their monotonicity property with respect to the Markov product. Applying the latter result, we identify all idempotent stochasticall…

Stochastic Gradient Algorithms (SGAs) are ubiquitous in computational statistics, machine learning and optimisation. Recent years have brought an influx of interest in SGAs, and the non-asymptotic analysis of their bias is by now well-developed. However, relatively little is known about the optimal choice of the random approximation (e.g mini-batching) of the gradient in SGAs as this relies on the analysis of the variance and is problem specific. While there have been numerous attempts to reduce the variance of SGAs, these typically exploit a particular structure of the sampled distribution by…
