Let G be a topological compact group acting on some space Y. We study a decomposition of Y-indexed stochastic processes, based on the orthogonality relations between the characters of the irreducible representations of G. In the particular case of a Gaussian process with a G-invariant law, such a decomposition gives a very general explanation of a classic identity in law - between quadratic functionals of a Brownian bridge - due to Watson (1961). Several relations with Karhunen-Loève expansions are discussed, and some applications and extensions are given - in particular related to Gaussian processes indexed by a torus.
We extend the result of Nualart and Schoutens on chaotic decomposition of the $L^2$-space of a Lévy process to the case of a generalized stochastic processes with independent values.
This paper presents a generalization of the Kunita-Watanabe decomposition of a $L^2$ space with nonlinear stochastic integrals where the integrator is a family of continuous martingales bounded in $L^2$. To get the result, a useful relation between the regularity of the martingale family respect to its parameter and the regularity of the integrand in its martingale decomposition is shown. The decomposition presented in the main result is also the solution of an optimization problem in $L^2$. Finally, an example is given where the optimization problem is solved explicitely.
Let $u = \{u(t, x); (t,x)\in \mathbb R_+\times \mathbb R\}$ be the solution to a linear stochastic heat equation driven by a Gaussian noise, which is a Brownian motion in time and a fractional Brownian motion in space with Hurst parameter $H\in(0, 1)$. For any given $x\in \mathbb R$ (resp. $t\in \mathbb R_+$), we show a decomposition of the stochastic process $t\mapsto u(t,x)$ (resp. $x\mapsto u(t,x)$) as the sum of a fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $H/2$ (resp. $H$) and a stochastic process with $C^{\infty}$-continuous trajectories. Some applications of those decompositions ar…
In this paper, we present martingale decomposition on time scales. We establish the related backward stochastic dynamic equations on time scales (this paper BS$\nabla$E for short, concerning $\nabla$-integral on time scales) which unify backward stochastic differential equations and backward stochastic difference equations. We prove the existence and uniqueness theorem of BS$\nabla$E. This work can be considered as a unification and a generalization of similar results in backward stochastic difference equations and backward stochastic differential equations.
We propose a new Kalikow decomposition for continuous time multivariate counting processes, on potentially infinite networks. We prove the existence of such a decomposition in various cases. This decomposition allows us to derive simulation algorithms that hold either for stationary processes with potentially infinite network but bounded intensities, or for processes with unbounded intensities in a finite network and with empty past before 0. The Kalikow decomposition is not unique and we discuss the choice of the decomposition in terms of algorithmic efficiency in certain cases. We apply thes…
In this paper we generalize known workload decomposition results for Lévy queues with secondary jump inputs and queues with server vacations or service interruptions. Special cases are polling systems with either compound Poisson or more general Lévy inputs. Our main tools are new martingale results, which have been derived in a companion paper.
This paper is devoted to present a method of proving verification theorems for stochastic optimal control of finite dimensional diffusion processes without control in the diffusion term. The value function is assumed to be continuous in time and once differentiable in the space variable ($C^{0,1}$) instead of once differentiable in time and twice in space ($C^{1,2}$), like in the classical results. The results are obtained using a time dependent Fukushima - Dirichlet decomposition proved in a companion paper by the same authors using stochastic calculus via regularization. Applications, exampl…
A stochastic optimal control problem driven by an abstract evolution equation in a separable Hilbert space is considered. Thanks to the identification of the mild solution of the state equation as $ν$-weak Dirichlet process, the value processes is proved to be a real weak Dirichlet process. The uniqueness of the corresponding decomposition is used to prove a verification theorem. Through that technique several of the required assumptions are milder than those employed in previous contributions about non-regular solutions of Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations.
We consider two bivariate models with two-way interactions in context of risk and queueing theory. The two entities interact with each other by providing assistance but otherwise evolve independently. We focus on certain random quantities underlying the joint survival probability and the joint stationary workload, and show that these admit stochastic decomposition. Each one can be seen as an independent sum of respective quantities for the two models with one-way interaction. Additionally, we discuss a rather general method of establishing decompositions from a given kernel equation by identif…
The paper investigates uniform convergence of wavelet expansions of Gaussian random processes. The convergence is obtained under simple general conditions on processes and wavelets which can be easily verified. Applications of the developed technique are shown for several classes of stochastic processes. In particular, the main theorem is adjusted to the fractional Brownian motion case. New results on the rate of convergence of the wavelet expansions in the space $C([0,T])$ are also presented.
We examine reaction networks (CRNs) through their associated continuous-time Markov processes. Studying the dynamics of such networks is in general hard, both analytically and by simulation. In particular, stationary distributions of stochastic reaction networks are only known in some cases. We analyze class properties of the underlying continuous-time Markov chain of CRNs under the operation of join and examine conditions such that the form of the stationary distributions of a CRN is derived from the parts of the decomposed CRNs. The conditions can be easily checked in examples and allow recu…
We derive a stochastic representation for the probability distribution on the positive orthant $(0,\infty)^d$ whose association between components is minimal among all probability laws with $\ell_p$-norm symmetric survival functions. It is given by a transformation of a uniform distribution on the standard unit simplex that is multiplied with an independent finite mixture of certain beta distributions and an additional atom at unity. On the one hand, this implies an efficient simulation algorithm for arbitrary probability laws with $\ell_p$-norm symmetric survival function. On the other hand, …
For given strongly local Dirichlet forms with possibly degenerate symmetric (sub)-elliptic matrix, we show the existence of weak solutions to the stochastic differential equations (associated with the Dirichlet forms) starting from all points in $\R^d$. More precisely, using heat kernel estimates, stochastic calculus, and Dirichlet form theory, we obtain the pointwise existence of weak solutions to the stochastic differential equations which have possibly unbounded and discontinuous drift. We also present some conditions that the weak solutions become pathwise unique strong solutions and provi…
We introduce a new class of self-similar Gaussian stochastic processes, where the covariance is defined in terms of a fractional Brownian motion and another Gaussian process. A special case is the solution in time to the fractional-colored stochastic heat equation described in Tudor (2013). We prove that the process can be decomposed into a fractional Brownian motion (with a different parameter than the one that defines the covariance), and a Gaussian process first described in Lei and Nualart (2008). The component processes can be expressed as stochastic integrals with respect to the Brownian…
The Neutron Transport Equation (NTE) describes the flux of neutrons through an inhomogeneous fissile medium. In this paper, we reconnect the NTE to the physical model of the spatial Markov branching process which describes the process of nuclear fission, transport, scattering, and absorption. By reformulating the NTE in its mild form and identifying its solution as an expectation semigroup, we use modern techniques to develop a Perron-Frobenius (PF) type decomposition, showing that growth is dominated by a leading eigenfunction and its associated left and right eigenfunctions. In the spirit of…
A class of Volterra transforms, preserving the Wiener measure, with kernels of Goursat type is considered. Such kernels satisfy a self-reproduction property. We provide some results on the inverses of the associated Gramian matrices which lead to a new self-reproduction property. A connection to the classical reproduction property is given. Results are then applied to the study of a class of singular linear stochastic differential equations together with the corresponding decompositions of filtrations. The studied equations are viewed as non-canonical decompositions of some generalized bridges…
When expanding a filtration with a stochastic process it is easily possible for semimartingale no longer to remain semimartingales in the enlarged filtration. Y. Kchia and P. Protter indicated a way to avoid this pitfall in 2015, but they were unable to give the semimartingale decomposition in the enlarged filtration except for special cases. We provide a way to compute such a decomposition, and moreover we provide a sufficient condition for Itô processes to remain Itô processes in the enlarged filtration. This has significance in applications to Mathematical Finance.
Let $M$ be a compact manifold equipped with a pair of complementary foliations, say horizontal and vertical. In Catuogno, Silva and Ruffino ($Stoch$. $Dyn$., 2013) it is shown that, up to a stopping time $τ$, a stochastic flow of local diffeomorphisms $φ_t$ in $M$ can be written as a Markovian process in the subgroup of diffeomorphisms which preserve the horizontal foliation composed with a process in the subgroup of diffeomorphisms which preserve the vertical foliation. Here, we discuss topological aspects of this decomposition. The main result guarantees the global decomposition of a flow if…
In this paper we show a decomposition of the bifractional Brownian motion with parameters H,K into the sum of a fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter HK plus a stochastic process with absolutely continuous trajectories. Some applications of this decomposition are discussed.
We present reduction and reconstruction procedures for the solutions of symmetric stochastic differential equations, similar to those available for ordinary differential equations. Additionally, we use the local tangent-normal decomposition, available when the symmetry group is proper, to construct local skew-product splittings in a neighborhood of any point in the open and dense principal orbit type. The general methods introduced in the first part of the paper are then adapted to the Hamiltonian case, which is studied with special care and illustrated with several examples. The Hamiltonian c…
Consider a manifold $M$ endowed locally with a pair of complementary distributions $Δ^H \oplus Δ^V=TM$ and let $\text{Diff}(Δ^H, M)$ and $\text{Diff}(Δ^V, M)$ be the corresponding Lie subgroups generated by vector fields in the corresponding distributions. We decompose a stochastic flow with jumps, up to a stopping time, as $φ_t = ξ_t \circ ψ_t$, where $ξ_t \in \text{Diff}(Δ^H, M)$ and $ψ_t \in \text{Diff}(Δ^V, M)$. Our main result provides Stratonovich stochastic differential equations with jumps for each of these two components in the corresponding infinite dimensional Lie groups. We present…
Let $M$ be a manifold equipped (locally) with a pair of complementary foliations. In Catuogno, da Silva and Ruffino (Stoch. Dyn. 2013), it is shown that, up to a stopping time $τ$, a stochastic flow of local diffeomorphisms $φ_t$ in $M$ can be decomposed in diffeomorphisms that preserves this foliations. In this article we present techniques which allows us to extend the time of this decomposition. For this extension, we use two techniques: In the first one, assuming that the vector fields of the system commute with each other, we apply Marcus equation to jump nondecomposable diffeomorphisms. …
We derive explicit integrability conditions for stochastic integrals taken over time and space driven by a random measure. Our main tool is a canonical decomposition of a random measure which extends the results from the purely temporal case. We show that the characteristics of this decomposition can be chosen as predictable strict random measures, and we compute the characteristics of the stochastic integral process. We apply our conditions to a variety of examples, in particular to ambit processes, which represent a rich model class.

This article introduces adaptive Fourier decomposition (AFD) type methods, emphasizing on those that can be applied to stochastic processes and random fields, mainly including stochastic adaptive Fourier decomposition and stochastic pre-orthogonal adaptive Fourier decomposition. We establish their algorithms based on the covariant function and prove that they enjoy the same convergence rate as the Karhunen-Loève (KL) decomposition. The AFD type methods are compared with the KL decomposition. In contrast with the latter, the AFD type methods do not need to compute eigenvalues and eigenfunctions…
The research presented in this article provides an alternative option pricing approach for a class of rough fractional stochastic volatility models. These models are increasingly popular between academics and practitioners due to their surprising consistency with financial markets. However, they bring several challenges alongside. Most noticeably, even simple non-linear financial derivatives as vanilla European options are typically priced by means of Monte-Carlo (MC) simulations which are more computationally demanding than similar MC schemes for standard stochastic volatility models. In this…
Partial differential equations (PDEs) are fundamental for theoretically describing numerous physical processes that are based on some input fields in spatial configurations. Understanding the physical process, in general, requires computational modeling of the PDE. Uncertainty in the computational model manifests through lack of precise knowledge of the input field or configuration. Uncertainty quantification (UQ) in the output physical process is typically carried out by modeling the uncertainty using a random field, governed by an appropriate covariance function. This leads to solving high-d…
In this paper we use the chaos decomposition approach to establish the existence of a unique continuous solution to linear fractional differential equations of the Skorohod type. Here the coefficients are deterministic, the inital condition is anticipating and the underlying fractional Brownian motion has Hurst parameter less than 1/2. We provide an explicit expression for the chaos decomposition of the solution in order to show our results.
Hierarchical Gaussian Random Fields for Multilevel Markov Chain Monte Carlo: Coupling Stochastic Partial Differential Equation and The Karhunen-Loève Decomposition
We give a simple and direct treatment of the strong convergence of quantum random walks to quantum stochastic operator cocycles, via the semigroup decomposition of such cocycles. Our approach also delivers convergence of the pointwise product of quantum random walks to the quantum stochastic Trotter product of the respective limit cocycles, thereby revealing the algebraic structure of the limiting procedure. The repeated quantum interactions model is shown to fit nicely into the convergence scheme described.
In this work, we introduce a Monte Carlo method for the dynamic hedging of general European-type contingent claims in a multidimensional Brownian arbitrage-free market. Based on bounded variation martingale approximations for Galtchouk-Kunita-Watanabe decompositions, we propose a feasible and constructive methodology which allows us to compute pure hedging strategies w.r.t arbitrary square-integrable claims in incomplete markets. In particular, the methodology can be applied to quadratic hedging-type strategies for fully path-dependent options with stochastic volatility and discontinuous payof…
