The core inverse for a complex matrix was introduced by Baksalary and Trenkler. Rakić, Dinčić and Djordjević generalized the core inverse of a complex matrix to the case of an element in a ring. They also proved that the core inverse of an element in a ring can be characterized by five equations and every core invertible element is group invertible. It is natural to ask when a group invertible element is core invertible, in this paper, we will answer this question. We will use three equations to characterize the core inverse of an element. That is, let $a, b\in R$, then $a\in R^{\tiny\textcircled{\tiny\#}}$ with $a^{\tiny\textcircled{\tiny\#}}=b$ if and only if $(ab)^{\ast}=ab$, $ba^{2}=a$ and $ab^{2}=b$. Finally, we investigate the additive property of two core invertible elements. Moreover, the formulae of the sum of two core invertible elements are presented.
Let $R$ be a unital ring with involution. In this paper, several new necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of the Moore-Penrose inverse of an element in a ring $R$ are given. In addition, the formulae of the Moore-Penrose inverse of an element in a ring are presented.
In this paper, we study the Moore-Penrose inverses of differences and products of projectors in a ring with involution. Also, some necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of such inverses are given, and their expressions are presented.
In a unitary ring with involution, we prove that each element has at most one weak group inverse if and only if each idempotent element has a unique weak group inverse. Furthermore, we define the $m$-weak group inverse and show some properties of $m$-weak group inverse.
Some general criteria to produce explicit free algebras inside the division ring of fractions of skew polynomial rings are presented. These criteria are applied to some special cases of division rings with natural involutions, yielding, for instance, free subalgebras generated by symmetric elements both in the division ring of fractions of the group algebra of a torsion free nilpotent group and in the division ring of fractions of the first Weyl algebra.
Let $R$ be a unital ring with involution. We give several characterizations and properties of core partial order in $R$. In particular, we investigate the reverse order law $(ab)^{\tiny\textcircled{\tiny\#}} = b^{\tiny\textcircled{\tiny\#}} a^{\tiny\textcircled{\tiny\#}}$ for two core invertible elements $a,b\in R$. Some relationships between core partial order and other partial orders are obtained.
This article concerns the MP inverse of the differences and the products of projections in a ring $R$ with involution. Some equivalent conditions are obtained. As applications, the MP invertibility of the commutator $pq-qp$ and the anti-commutator $pq+qp$ are characterized, where $p$ and $q$ are projections in $R$. Some related known results in $C^*$-algebra are generalized.
In this paper, we mainly give characterizations of EP elements in terms of equations. In addition, a related notion named a central EP element is defined and investigated. Finally, we focus on characterizations of a generalized EP element, i.e. *-DMP element.
We present new additive results for the core inverse in a Banach algebra with involution. We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions under which the sum of two core invertible elements in a Banach algebra with involution is core invertible. Then we apply our results to block complex matrices and obtain certain conditions under which a block complex is core invertible. These generalize many known results, e.g.,~\cite[Theorem 4.3]{XCZ}, ~\cite[Theorem 2.5]{XS}.
A ring with an involution * is called strongly $J$-*-clean if every element is a sum of a projection and an element of the Jacobson radical that commute. In this article, we prove several results characterizing this class of rings. It is shown that a *-ring $R$ is strongly $J$-*-clean, if and only if $R$ is uniquely clean and strongly *-clean, if and only if $R$ is uniquely strongly *-clean, that is, for any $a\in R$, there exists a unique projection $e\in R$ such that $a-e$ is invertible and $ae=ea$.
Faithful representations of regular $\ast$-rings and modular complemented lattices with involution within orthosymmetric sesquilinear spaces are studied within the framework of Universal Algebra. In particular, the correspondence between classes of spaces and classes of representables is analyzed; for a class of spaces which is closed under ultraproducts and non-degenerate finite dimensional subspaces, the latter are shown to be closed under complemented [regular] subalgebras, homomorphic images, and ultraproducts and being generated by those members which are associated with finite dimensiona…
We prove that if an involution in a ring is the sum of an idempotent and a nilpotent then the idempotent in this decomposition must be 1. As a consequence, we completely characterize weakly nil-clean rings introduced recently in [Breaz, Danchev and Zhou, Rings in which every element is either a sum or a difference of a nilpotent and an idempotent, J. Algebra Appl., DOI: 10.1142/S0219498816501486].
Motivated by Hirano-Tominaga's work \cite{HT} on rings for which every element is a sum of two idempotents and by de Seguins Pazzis's results \cite{de} on decomposing every matrix over a field of positive characteristic as a sum of idempotent matrices, we address decomposing every matrix over a commutative ring as a sum of three idempotent matrices and, respectively, as a sum of three involutive matrices.
Let $R$ be a unital ring with involution. We first show that the EP elements in $R$ can be characterized by three equations. Namely, let $a\in R$, then $a$ is EP if and only if there exists $x\in R$ such that $(xa)^{\ast}=xa$, $xa^{2}=a$ and $ax^{2}=x.$ It is well known that all EP elements in $R$ are core invertible and Moore-Penrose invertible. We give more equivalent conditions for a core (Moore-Penrose) invertible element to be an EP element. Finally, the EP elements are characterized in terms of $n$-EP property, which is a generalization of bi-EP property.
Let $R$ be a ring with involution. In this paper, we introduce a new type of generalized inverse called pseudo core inverse in $R$. The notion of core inverse was introduced by Baksalary and Trenkler for matrices of index 1 in 2010 and then it was generalized to an arbitrary $*$-ring case by Rakić, Dinčić and Djordjević in 2014. Our definition of pesudo core inverse extends the notion of core inverse to elements of an arbitrary index in $R$. Meanwhile, it generalizes the notion of core-EP inverse, introduced by Manjunatha Prasad and Mohana for matrices in 2014, to the case of $*$-ring. Some eq…
The aim of this paper is to try to answer Herstein's question concerning simple rings with involution, namely: If $R$ is a simple ring with an involution of the first kind, with $dim_{Z(R)}R > 4$ and $\Char(Z(R))\neq 2$, is it true that $S^2=R$? We shall see that in such a ring $R$, $R=S^3$. We shall bring two possible criteria, each shows when $R=S^2$. The first criterion: There exist $x,y \in S$ such that $xy-yx \neq 0$ and $xSy \subseteq S^2$ $\Leftrightarrow$ $S^2=R$. The second criterion: There exist $x,y \in S$ such that $xy+yx \neq 0$ and $xKy \subseteq S^2$ $\Leftrightarrow$ $S^2=R$. A…
The classes of 1MP-inverses and MP1-inverses are recently introduced classes of generalized inverses of complex matrix. Actually, they coincide with the classes of $\{1,2,3\}$ and $\{1,2,4\}$ inverses, respectively. We consider these inverses in the context of a ring with involution and prove that their most important characterizations and properties remain true. We show that the binary relations based on these inverses are in fact the well known left-star and right-star partial orders. We extend these relations to the ring case, connect them with the unified theory of partial order relations …
The principal minors of the Toeplitz matrix $\left( x_{i-j+1}\right)_{1\le i,j,\le n}$, where $x_0=1, x_k=0$ if $k\le -1$, directly determine an involution of the polynomial ring $R[x_1, ... ,x_n]$ over any commutative ring $R$.
$R$ is a unital ring with involution. We investigate the characterizations and representations of weighted core inverse of an element in $R$ by idempotents and units. For example, let $a\in R$ and $e\in R$ be an invertible Hermitian element, $n\geqslant 1$, then $a$ is $e$-core invertible if and only if there exists an element (or an idempotent) $p$ such that $(ep)^{\ast}=ep$, $pa=0$ and $a^{n}+p$ (or $a^{n}(1-p)+p$) is invertible. As a consequence, let $e, f\in R$ be two invertible Hermitian elements, then $a$ is weighted-$\mathrm{EP}$ with respect to $(e, f)$ if and only if there exists an e…
Let $R$ be a ring with $char(R)\neq2$ whose unit group are denoted by $\mathcal{U}(R)$, $G$ a group with involution $*$, and $σ:G\rightarrow\mathcal{U}(R)$ a nontrivial group homomorphism, with $ker\ σ=N$, satisfying $xx^*\in N$ for all $x\in G$. Let $RG$ be the group ring of $G$ over $R$ and define the involution $σ*$ in $RG$ by $\left( \sum_{x\in G}α_xx\right)^{σ*}=\sum_{x\in G}σ(x)α_xx^*$. In this paper, we will classify the group rings $RG$ such that $\mathcal{S}$ is anticommutative, where $\mathcal{S}$ is the largest subset of $(RG)^+=\left\{ α\in RG: α^{σ*}=α\right\}$ that can satisfy an…
For any Lie algebra L over a field, its universal enveloping algebra U(L) can be embedded in a division ring D(L) constructed by Lichtman. If U(L) is an Ore domain, D(L) coincides with its ring of fractions. It is well known that the principal involution of L, $x\mapsto -x$, can be extended to an involution of U(L), and Cimpric has proved that this involution can be extended to one on D(L). For a large class of noncommutative Lie algebras L over a field of characteristic zero, we show that D(L) contains noncommutative free algebras generated by symmetric elements with respect to (the extension…
In this paper, we first prove that if a is both left (b, c)-invertible and left (c, b)-invertible, then a is both (b, c)-invertible and (c, b)-invertible in a *-monoid, which generalized the recent result about the inverse along an element by Wang and Mosic, under the conditions (ab)* = ab and (ac)* = ac. In addition, we consider that ba is (c, b)- invertible, and at the same time ca is (b, c)-invertible under the same conditions, which extend the related results about Moore-Penrose inverses by Chen et al. to (b, c)-inverses. As applications, we obtain that under condition (a2)* = a2, a is an …
In this paper, we introduce a partial order on rings with involution, which is a generalization of the partial order on the set of projections in a Rickart *-ring. We prove that a *-ring with the natural partial order form a sectionally semi-complemented poset. It is proved that every interval [0,x] forms an orthomodular lattice in case of abelian Rickart *-rings. The concepts of generalized comparability (GC) and partial comparability (PC) are extended to involve all the elements of a *-ring. Further, it is proved that these concepts are equivalent in finite abelian Rickart *-rings.
Let $R$ be a ring with $char(R)\neq2$ whose unit group are denoted by $\mathcal{U}(R)$, $G$ a group, and $RG$ its group ring. Let $*$ be an involution in $G$, $σ:G\rightarrow\mathcal{U}(R)$ be a nontrivial group homomorphism, with $ker\ σ=N$, satisfying $xx^*\in N$ for all $x\in G$, and define the generalized oriented involution $σ*$ in $RG$ by $\left( \sum_{x\in G}α_xx\right)^{σ*}=\sum_{x\in G}σ(x)α_xx^*$. An element $α\in RG$ is called skew-symmetric if $α^{σ*}=-α$, and the set of all skew-symmetric elements are denoted by $(RG)^-$. In this paper, we will classify the group rings $RG$ such t…
We consider the problem of classifying (possibly noncommutative) R-algebras of low rank over an arbitrary base ring R. We first classify algebras by their degree, and we relate the class of algebras of degree 2 to algebras with a standard involution. We then investigate a class of exceptional rings of degree 2 which occur in every rank n >= 1 and show that they essentially characterize all algebras of degree 2 and rank 3.
We consider the following problem: Under what assumptions do one or more of the following are equivalent for a ring $R$: (A) $R$ is Morita equivalent to a ring with involution, (B) $R$ is Morita equivalent to a ring with an anti-automorphism, (C) $R$ is Morita equivalent to its opposite ring. The problem is motivated by a theorem of Saltman which roughly states that all conditions are equivalent for Azumaya algebras. Basing on the recent "general bilinear forms", we present a general machinery to attack the problem, and use it to show that (C)$\iff$(B) when $R$ is semilocal or $\mathbb{Q}$-fin…
Let R be a unital ring with involution, we give the characterizations and representations of the core and dual core inverses of an element in R by Hermitian elements (or projections) and units. For example, let a in R and n is an integer greater than or equal to 1, then a is core invertible if and only if there exists a Hermitian element (or a projection) p such that pa=0, a^n+p is invertible. As a consequence, a is an EP element if and only if there exists a Hermitian element (or a projection) p such that pa=ap=0, a^n+p is invertible. We also get a new characterization for both core invertibl…
We show that the canonical involution on a nonabelian poly-orderable group G extends to the Hughes-free division ring of fractions D of the group algebra k[G] of G over a field k and that, with respect to this involution, D contains a pair of symmetric elements freely generating a free group subalgebra of D over k.
The notion of the weighted core inverse in a ring with involution was introduced, recently [Mosic et al. Comm. Algebra, 2018; 46(6); 2332-2345]. In this paper, we explore new representation and characterization of the weighted core inverse of sum and difference of two weighted core invertible elements in an unital ring with involution under different conditions. Further, we discuss reverse order laws and mixed-type reverse order laws for the weighted core invertible elements in a ring.
In [Q. Xu et al., The solutions to some operator equations, Linear Algebra Appl.(2008), doi:10.1016/j.laa.2008.05.034], Xu et al. provided the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a solution to the equation $AXB^*-BX^*A^*=C$ in the general setting of the adjointable operators between Hilbert $C^*$-modules. Based on the generalized inverses, they also obtained the general expression of the solution in the solvable case. In this paper, we generalize their work in the more general setting of ring $R$ with involution * and reobtain results for rectangular matrices and operators…
Let $R$ be a ring with involution. The recently introduced notions of the core and dual core inverse are extended from matrix to an arbitrary $*$-ring case. It is shown that the group, Moore-Penrose, core and dual core inverse are closely related and they can be treated in the same manner using appropriate idempotents. The several characterizations of these inverses are given. Some new properties are obtained and some known results are generalized. A number of characterizations of EP elements in $R$ are obtained. It is shown that core and dual core inverse belong to the class of inverses along…
We consider the general circumstance of an Azumaya algebra $A$ of degree $n$ over a locally ringed topos $(\mathbf{X}, {\mathcal{O}}_{\mathbf{ X}})$ where the latter carries a (possibly trivial) involution, denoted $λ$. This generalizes the usual notion of involutions of Azumaya algebras over schemes with involution, which in turn generalizes the notion of involutions of central simple algebras. We provide a criterion to determine whether two Azumaya algebras with involutions extending $λ$ are locally isomorphic, describe the equivalence classes obtained by this relation, and settle the questi…
Let $R$ be a commutative ring of characteristic zero and $G$ an arbitrary group. In the present paper we classify the groups $G$ for which the set of symmetric elements with respect to the classical involution of the group ring $RG$ is Lie metabelian.
For an endomorphism s of R with s^{t}=1 we prove that the truncated polynomial ring (algebra) R[w,s]/(w^{t}) embeds into M_{t}(R[z]/(z^{t})). For an involution we exhibit an embedding of R into M_{2,1}^{s}(R), where M_{2,1}^{s}(R) is the algebra of the so called (s,2,1) supermatrices.
Let $k$ be a field of characteristic different from $2$ and let $G$ be a nonabelian residually torsion-free nilpotent group. It is known that $G$ is an orderable group. Let $k(G)$ denote the subdivision ring of the Malcev-Neumann series ring generated by the group algebra of $G$ over $k$. If $\ast$ is an involution on $G$, then it extends to a unique $k$-involution on $k(G)$. We show that $k(G)$ contains pairs of symmetric elements with respect to $\ast$ which generate a free group inside the multiplicative group of $k(G)$. Free unitary pairs also exist if $G$ is torsion-free nilpotent. Finall…
The aim of this work is to investigate the structure of some skew twisted algebras, when the coefficient ring is a localization of the polynomial ring over the field of characteristic zero, and an involution is provided. A parallel construction of the rational twisted generalized Weyl algebras is given. We propose a method and explicit formulas for a constructive description of these algebras and their involution-symmetric invariant subalgebras based on the Gelfand-Zeitlin realization of the universal enveloping algebra of some complex Lie algebras. As concrete examples we discuss special unit…
Let $R$ be a commutative ring, $G$ a group and $RG$ its group ring. Let $\vp : RG\to RG$ denote the $R$-linear extension of an involution $\vp$ defined on $G$. An element $x$ in $RG$ is said to be $\vp$-antisymmetric if $\vp (x) = -x$. A characterization is given of when the $\vp$-antisymmetric elements of $RG$ commute. This is a completion of earlier work.
In this article several properties of the inverse along an element will be studied in the context of unitary rings. New characterizations of the existence of this inverse will be proved. Moreover, the set of all invertible elements along a fixed element will be fully described. Futhermore, commuting inverse along an element will be characterized. The special cases of the group inverse, the (generalized) Drazin inverse and the Moore-Penrose inverse (in rings with involutions) will be also considered.
For a division ring $D$, denote by $\mathcal M_D$ the $D$-ring obtained as the completion of the direct limit $\varinjlim_n M_{2^n}(D)$ with respect to the metric induced by its unique rank function. We prove that, for any ultramatricial $D$-ring $\mathcal B$ and any non-discrete extremal pseudo-rank function $N$ on $\mathcal B$, there is an isomorphism of $D$-rings $\overline{\mathcal B} \cong \mathcal M_D$, where $\overline{\mathcal B}$ stands for the completion of $\mathcal B$ with respect to the pseudo-metric induced by $N$. This generalizes a result of von Neumann. We also show a correspo…
Let $R$ be an associative ring with unity $1$ and consider that $2,k$ and $2k\in \mathbb{N}$ are invertible in $R$. For $m\geq 1$ denote by $UT_n(m,R)$ and $UT_{\infty}(m,R)$, the subgroups of $UT_n(R)$ and $UT_{\infty}(R)$ respectively, which have zero entries on the first $m-1$ super diagonals. We show that every element on the groups $UT_n(m,R)$ and $UT_{\infty}(m,R)$ can be expressed as a product of two commutators of involutions and also, can be expressed as a product of two commutators of skew-involutions and involutions in $UT_{\infty}(m,R)$. Similarly, denote by $UT^{(s)}_{\infty}(R)$ …
In this paper, we first prove that the absorption law for one-sided inverses along an element holds, deriving the absorption law for the inverse along an element. We then apply this result to obtain the absorption law for the inverse along different elements. Also, the reverse order law and the existence criterion for the inverse along an element are given by centralizers in a ring. Finally, we characterize the Moore-Penrose inverse by one-sided invertibilities in a ring with involution.
We introduce and study a new class of Drazin inverses. An element $a$ in a ring $R$ has Drazin inverse $b$ if $a^2-ab\in N(R)$, $ab=ba$ and $b=bab$. Every Hirano inverse of an element is its Drazin inverse. We drive several characterization for this generalized inverse.
We introduce and study a new class of generalized inverse in rings. An element $a$ in a ring $R$ has generalized Hirano inverse if there exists some $b\in R$ such that $bab=b, b\in comm^2(a), a^2-ab \in R^{qnil}$
We present some formulae for the Drazin inverse of difference and product of idempotents in a ring. A number of results of bounded linear operators in Banach spaces are extended to the ring case.
